LagosShia:
why are you trying to evade my point deliberately?
Oh dear. You need to calm down and read properly. The sole purpose of that quote was to respond ONLY to your citation of the church as an example of iranian tolerance. Grab a kitkat and chillax jare  cheesy

Now to the rest of your posts . . .
in iran non-muslim communities exist there and they are treated well.infact both christians and jews are guaranteed a minimum quota in the iranian parliament regardless if they vote or not.do you know that?

if you compare the treatement of iranian minorities who have lived there for thousands of years, you will know that all iranians live peacefully as one.the problem comes in when american zealot missionaries want to test iranian law when they fully know what the law this.that being said is regardless of what i think is right or wrong when it comes to capital punishment.we have our views against capital punishment.that is fine.

but why do you also want to ignore those who put themselves into trouble?it is not my or your duty to change whatever law they have in iran.you have to respect that too.it is their country.

would you blame countries who sentence people to death because of having cocaine in their possession? nigerians that are found guilty of having cocaine in asian countries and are killed are mostly blamed by nigerians back home for risking their lives.why do you risk your life and then all in a bid to have some arguments to make against iran or their law?

as for the church, whether it is used or not,got to do with tolerance.if the iranian who are shia and proudly so are like the salafist/wahhabi taliban, they would have blown up that church as the taliban blew up the buddha statues in bamiyan even after the UN made it a world heritage site.iranians are proud in preserving their culture and history.they even hold the pagan period before islam when their civilization was at its highest peak and persia was strong with pride.likewise, they know well iran has a christian history and jewish history.tolerance is when we accept one another.it is not when i fold my hands and watch you brainwash me.you also have to respect and acccept that the iranians are predominantly muslims.
LagosShia:
this my response is both to you and to "the homer".

i have later on stated my personal view and thoughts on this issue as i see it fit from the Quran.in another forum,i have even gone as far as calling death penalty for apostacy as un-islamic because it clear goes against what the Quran says.so i really dont know why people over here have a fanatical way of dragging on issues even after answers have being provided.

i am not scared to be judged by anyone be he muslim or not.i follow what is in the Quran.it is through that way that i am muslim and i am shia.i also depend on my god-give intellect to think deep.this is what i said earlier on on my view on this issue:

when talking about punishment for apostacy in islam, the death penalty is not prescribed as punishment in the Quran.there is no killing for apostacy.this issue is controversial even in islamic circles.that is my personal take on the issue.i believe capital punishment for apostacy is a judeo-christian tradition found in the bible where "everyone should be stoned" literally.however,if a law exists somewhere, then it must be respected.we know how you must behave as a roman when in rome.it is part of iranian law that proselythization is a criminal act.then dont go there doing it.that also does not mean that iran does not respect or protect its minorities among them christians who have being there for about 2000 years.

this is the take of the Quran:

"Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from error: whoever rejects Taghut and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things." [2:256]

"Those who believe, then disbelieve, then believe again, then disbelieve, and then increase in their disbelief - Allah will never forgive them nor guide them to the path."[4:137].

if (4:137),if a person is to be killed for apostacy, then how can he believe again after he disbelieves?
To distill your response above into a single statement - the death penalty as punishment for apostacy is un-islamic in your opinion - but this is not universally accepted by all muslims hence the practice in many islamic countries.

Okay. My last question sir. Do you, Mr LagosShia, as a devout muslim, condemn the sentence of death on this man?

(And btw, we're not debating the rights of a sovereign nation to institute whatever laws they want . . . Iran has the right to sentence to death for whatever crime they as a society see fit. Point not under contention. The question is the opinion of everyday muslims on the morality of such laws.)

LagosShia:
the link you presented is talking about "massacring christians in iraq".all peace loving muslims will condemnd anyone who assault out christian brothers.at least that is the position of the shia and their religious authorities.we do not believe in bombing places of worship,be they muslim or christian and sunni or shia.that is far apart from what we are discussing here.
You missed the point.

You attempted to cite the 'oldest church in the world' in Iran as an example of their tolerance to which I was responding as I did a yr ago:
Furthermore, you're citing Iran as an example of tolerance?  oh dear, this topic is too serious for these kinds of jokes oh. I watched a documentary on this "oldest church" just a few weeks ago actually. You herald it as a symbol of tolerance. Did you know the church (which is practically on the turkish border by the way) is not even used/occupied? but is rather a national tourism site? bringing in money for the govt.? and that people are not allowed to even pray in it? and that one of the sculptures on the outside of the building is that of the Ayatollah?
Get it now?

thehomer:
Sorry to interrupt but I simply had to respond to this.

The answer can be yes it is appropriate or no it isn't appropriate. Not whatever you think but whatever you say that may be used against you. Though I doubt that if you said it was inappropriate, it would be used against you.

Aren't there Muslims who are full of zealotry, fanaticism and hatred for other groups of people around the world?
Do you think proselytizing should be against the law? We need your own opinions here.

Do you think it is okay to kill people for their religious beliefs or for trying to spread their religions by talking?

I think this example is irrelevant because weed is nothing like a religious idea.

You see, when you and many other Muslims refuse to engage such questions in your communities, you shouldn't be surprised that people use your silence as acquiescence for other atrocities like terrorism. It is up to Muslims like yourself (if you do not agree with it) to speak up or be painted with a broad brush.
thehomer, thank you very much for this interjection, very well stated sir.

Lagosshia, I'm going to challenge you a little harder brother. We discussed not too long ago on that 'mad man thread' about obvious answers that may clash with our religious beliefs. I have no intention of 'using your own answer against you', infact on the contrary it would improve the negative estimation of muslims in this section to hear someone like you call out something wrong for what it is.

Should it be right for a man to be sentenced to death simply because of what he believes? How does that reconcile with your faith? thanks in advance.
I was just teasing, Jesweet. cheesy Wasn't serious at all about where you post. lol. Anyway, I can't help myself. I'm a "troublemaker."
Lol. Why don't I believe that fully?  cheesy

As for the rest, there's a difference between relationship(s) with people of other races, and political based differences.  Many of the most ardent freedom-fighters have closest inter-racial relationships.  Sidney Poitier is married to a white woman and is loved by whites and trusted by them so much so they'll pair him with a blind white girl in a movie without batting an eye.  Yet, he is one of the most "anti-establishment" blacks out there.  Anytime there was someone being oppresed, dude was there, in the background helping out.  Same thing with Harry Belafonte.  Meanwhile, most of the ones playing to the stereotype of the tough niggar hanging with the homies will be the first to sell their people down the river.  I know this is a much more complex and time-consuming discussion.  I simply used the simplest example I could find.  wink
^I like this very much, you are right. Balance is everything. I have a ton of admiration for blacks who can seamlessly forge alliances with both sides, showing that they are indeed color-blind (isn't this what Dr King was preaching about?) - this is progressive and is where the world should be headed. Evil and good come in all colors and races.

Cap28, like many people like him, probably has more education in "all-white" environment, spent more time around (and has more friends and colleagues who are) white, than your typical Black.  I don't think he's a white-hating guy.  I just don't think you're understanding where he's coming from AT ALL!  All my friends could be white and I could be able to call on them at a moment's notice and always have them have my back.  That's got nothing to do with fighting an entrenched and racist system and it doesn't mean that you believe all whites are evil.  I don't have time to get deeper.  But, I'm sure others will.
Maybe I am indeed misunderstanding him - however much I doubt it. I have not heard or seen him once say anything positive about a single white soul. And when others do, he labels them like he did me here. I'd bet he doesn't believe "all whites are racist" but his posts on here certainly leave a lot to be desired - and I'm just one of many who have repeatedly called him out. "Fighting an entrenched racist system" is not merely posting youtube videos of black supremacists or quoting russian conspiracy websites - it is doing your part in whatever corner of the world you find yourself to fight it. At least that's what I think smiley.

So long.  We still have to braid your hair.  cheesy Ouch!  grin
Lol. I don begin dey fear you oh! if your hand tight reach so, I go hold my bottle of advil on standby cheesy

what happened in iraq is very sad and unfortunate.but let me also add that the article above does not help the situation or the christians in particular.it is adding fuel to fire.it is making things look like muslims are targetting christians everywhere in the middle east and that isnt true.israel,a state, has done more harm to both christians and muslims and have limited their freedom to worship.take note that about 25% of palestinians are christians.there are palestinian families that predate both Jesus and Moses in palestine and have lived there since time immemorial.israel has displaced them, seized their land and rendered them refugees.many muslim countries in the middle east have churches and christians are free.take iran as an example of tolerance.iran has the oldest churches in the world.

This is one of the main problem with muslim apologists.

The topic is about Al Qaeda killing christians in Iraq, and it took you all but 2 sentences before you flipped the script and started talking about "Isreal" and "Occupation of 'Palestinian' land". I applaud you for denoucing the act but you should've simply stopped there instead deploying the popular tactic of deflecting to Isreal whenever accusations are pointed against any islamic republic.

Furthermore, you're citing Iran as an example of tolerance?  oh dear, this topic is too serious for these kinds of jokes oh. 'Iran' and 'religious tolerance', an oxymoron if I ever saw one. The same Iran constantly in the news for human rights violations. I'll stop now cos this isn't the politics/foreign affairs section.

LagosShia:
the presence of christianity in iran and countries like syria, lebanon, palestine and jordan are centuries old. christians are well treated in iran as a minority.

however in the case of this pastor,it has nothing to do with foricing him to accept islam.the pastor was allegedly muslim and iranian before he became christian at the age of 19 years old. iran is not against christians and that has being the policy of the islamic republic by treating minorities with respect.

however there is a recent plot by evengelicals who go to iran to wreck havoc.they first of all confuse young iranians and lay captive for them.they exploit their financial conditions to offer them things like money and even visas to western countries promising them honey and butter.that is the entire issue about this iranian pastor.

it is of more concern to me because iranians are most Shia, like myself.and the tolerance and implimentation of verse 2:256 of the Holy Quran is given more importance and emphasis by the Shia school of thought than the Sunnis do.and worse are the salafists aka wahhabis (a minority among sunnis) who believe "infidels should be killed".LOL

"there is no compulsion in religion" (Holy Quran 2:256)
. . . and you were able to type this with a straight finger face Lol. Men, the quality of the kool-aid you've been drinking must be top-notch. "Iran treats christians and minorities with respect" . . . very funny joke brother.

As for our brother Cap, I have told him many times he remains my brother. I will continue to throw a wet blanket and smolder out the fire . . . lest the God in heaven that I claim to worship be ashamed of me for only loving those neighbors who look like me.

I'm not naive, I know there are racist elements in low & high places, and both black & white are fighting against them. One of Obamas hopes now is that Rick Perry should win so moderates and leftist would be soo repulsed that they would rather vote Barack than Perry

But If I am Obama I would be more worried about Romney
Actually I did and your analysis is absolutely spot on. Romney is certainly a more palatable choice to independents and angry, fed-up democrats. Perry had a good chance of waltzing in demolishing Romney but unfortunately he has not been strong and decisive during the debates, showing he may not be ready for this level of competition.

Foreign AffairsAs A Consequence Of Govt. Regulation - Bankofamerica Charges $5 Debit Card Fee by JeSoul(op): 4:22pm On Sep 30, 2011
http://money.cnn.com/2011/09/29/pf/bank_of_america_debit_fee/index.htm

Bank of America to charge $5 monthly debit card fee
By Blake Ellis September 29, 2011

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Get ready for a new wave of bank fees. Bank of America will begin charging a $5 monthly fee at the beginning of next year for customers who make debit card purchases. Whether you use your card for one purchase a month or 20, you will pay $5 per month starting in 2012. It doesn't matter if you select "debit" or "credit" at the point of sale.

If you don't use your card at all, you won't be assessed a fee, and you can still use ATMs as much as you want without getting hit with the new charge. Plus, customers with certain premium accounts will be exempt from the charge. Other banks have been flirting with the idea of introducing a fee for debit card usage, but Bank of America (BAC, Fortune 500) is one of the first major institutions to announce that it will make this a reality for active debit card customers. The move coincides with the implementation of new rules limiting the revenue banks will be able to get from merchants. Beginning this weekend, a cap on the fees banks can charge retailers every time customers swipe their debit cards will take effect. While banks used to charge an average fee of 44 cents, now the maximum fee is only 21 cents. This is expected to cost the banking industry billions of dollars. The Federal Reserve introduced the cap this summer, despite protests from many financial institutions. "The economics of offering a debit card have changed with recent regulations," said Bank of America spokeswoman Betty Riess, adding that customers will be notified of the change at least 30 days before it takes effect.

Last month, Wells Fargo (WFC, Fortune 500) said it will test a $3 monthly fee in Georgia, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon and Washington beginning Oct. 14 for customers who use their debit card for purchases. At the end of last year, JPMorgan Chase (JPM, Fortune 500) announced a similar test, in which it charged customers in northern Wisconsin a $3 fee for using their debit cards. A Chase spokesman said last month that the tests were still underway.
But Senator Durbin (D-Ill.), who introduced the swipe-fee cap in an amendment to the Dodd-Frank financial reform act, said the cap simply evens out the playing field for retailers because the fees Visa and MasterCard had set for banks "grossly exceed the cost of processing a debit card transaction by some 400%." "After years of raking in excess profits off an unfair and anti-competitive interchange system, Bank of America is trying to find new ways to pad their profits by sticking it to its customers," Durbin said in a statement Thursday. "It's overt, unfair and I hope their customers have the final say."
I'm not upset about the democratic legislation that led to BOA instituting a new fee because these reckless corporations many of whom have received bail-outs, need to be reigned in - I am upset at the insatiable greed of banks who instead of cutting operating costs to offset whatever losses they incurred from the bill (losses btw which were been unfairly ripped from merchants in the first place, much like cellphone corporations charging $10 for text msgs that cost >20c to process) decided to pass it on to innocent consumers.

I use my BOA card for practically everything as I'm not a fan of carrying cash and debit cards are just so much more convenient. Needless to say, I am going to find a new bank asap. $5 just to swipe your card? angry this is worse than daylight robbery, they couldn't even start small at $1 or something. Them greedy buffoons are not getting a dime of my money, I'd rather donate to Obama's re-election campaign  cheesy so that more regulations of this kind can continue to squeeze them where it hurts and consumers take their business and money elsewhere. They should'nt have been bailed out by Obama in the first place. Let them go bankrupt jor. Nonsense.

KJV. . .preferred. Used to read the NIV until I read the preface and realized the subtlety of it's translators in watering down the true meaning of certain key bible verses.

@Jesoul: The Message is a terrible (in more sense than one) translation.
Honestly, I think its mostly about education, perspective and background.

I find the Message Bible (along with the NLT) extremely helpful in being able to paraphrase otherwise wordier, less user-friendly words - especially for a much younger generation. I do conceed that in the process of paraphrasing and 'dumbing down' (bad word choice I know) some of the 'power' is lost in the process. Which I why I still make a point to read the KJV and oftentimes do side-by-side comparisons for maximum effect. I could not read the KJV everyday. I'm not used to that flavor of english and hence do myself a disservice - it is probably different for you and many others and I salute of all una smiley.

As for the NIV . . . I have heard and read many objections like you have raised above. Honestly, I have found no major fault of damning quality . . . perhaps you have evidence to the contrary? smiley

I was talking to my co-worker the other day, they know I'm independent leaning right, and I jokingly said I would vote for Obama because I didn't like any of the republican candidates so far . . .

my hard-core democrat co-worker, 40s, caucasian, every-day really cool guy . . . doesn't laugh in response. He says "how could you vote for Obama after the way the last 3 yrs have gone?"  shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked

this is a hard-core democrat saying this oh Lol. He goes on to say he's most likely going to vote for the Republican candidate primarily because of the reckless spending of Obama. Me knowing he doesn't like Mitt Romney our ex-governor went on to ask "You would even vote for Mitt Romney? you hate him!?" His reply "Yes I would, at this rate, I certainly would" "This so-called change, I'm not liking it at all"  shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked

Folks this is a lifetime democrat we're talking about here. I simply said to him "wow, I'm speechless". lol. It was then I really believed all the polls that have Obama's rating in the tank. The dissatisfaction may very well translate to him being a one-termer if he doesn't do something spectacular in the next yr or the republicans screw up big time.

my hands are clean o.  cheesy
How can the hands of an unapologetic, raving, nancy-pelosi loving liberal be clean?

I never knew those tea baggers had some sense grin
I believe you do not know what that term means or else you wouldn't have used it. But if you did - shame on you! tongue

I was waiting for them to nominate the Alaska gift grin but she doesn't even top their polls and the babe knows it's best to remain relevant from behind. As for chris cristie, take a look at huntsman, a popular governor, Obama sent him to china to get rid of him, GOP talked him into resigning and contesting, only for him to rock 1% poll after poll grin chris Christie is wiser than that. Look at Perry. Just a few weeks ago, if was Perry Perry Perry pls come join the race, now see the same Perry is abandoned. Lol. Bachmann mistook tea party bigoted anti Obama fever as popularity for her. She looked at her regular wacky crowd and started talking like them thinking it'll build her political machine. Mscheeew!!!!. Lol. John Stewart put it best, the problem is not the candidates, the problem is the far right wing tea party GOP primary voters. Lol. And pls tell Herman Cain to stop wasting his time grin they are deceiving him with those fake polls. He won't win one vote on election day  grin Black Man? GOP? Not in this century. Lol.
Honestly, this Micheal Moore flavored kool-aid that you've been consuming like palmwine is starting to show some ugly effects cheesy You're right about the luster on Mr Perry losing its shine a little bit, but it is because he has not had a strong showing in the debates so far. Same for Bachmann. She was leading in some polls few weeks ago, but recently made some missteps and miquotes that have really hurt her.

Analyze proper jare and stop watching Jon Stewart as if his comedy is a responsible source of political commentary. Yeye boy that you are grin

My final comment about this here !!!!!!!!!

I have almost given up on Nairaland and their ability to wrench comments out of context. Is this a Nigerian thing. huh

Okay, lets see the statement that prompted my reaction.
I have no problem with this statement except of course the bolded part which falsely called the catholic church the one true church. If this is your bone of contention, I consider it as a joke.
What exactly are you talking about? In all your posts on this thread, you have not once addressed the actual topic. Need I say more? No one is saying you cannot address the contents of another post, but the direction you're going is GOING to derail this otherwise nice thread with catholic vs. non-catholic.

I will hold you to your word that quote being your "final comment in here". I will have to delete any others that are off-topic. You can always reach me on the mod thread. Thanks.

frosbel:
We are talking about bible versions right ?

And if I were to say I do not read the catholic version, that is equal to derailment  huh
Really? This is what you said:
frosbel:
^^^

The church Jesus Christ founded is not the Catholic church.

The Catholic church has at it's head the POPE.

The true Church has at it's head Christ Jesus.

The catholic church is just a pagan roman institution, a remnant of the pagan empire.

Catholic versions of the bible can be perilous to your health.
You have plenty of threads to discuss your objections to all things catholic. Please respect another persons thread as you would like them to respect yours. If you have any other comment please post it on the Mod/Complaint thread so this one can continue in peace. https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-505782.0.html

Sweetnecta & Frosbel, do not derail the thread. Please carry any other discussions to your threads.

sookoo:
I prefer the King James version! When my friends tease me about my preference for the 'thou, thee, whither' stuff,I jokingly tell them its the 'Authorized version'!.
Why?King James is easy to memorize and and 'confess'!I started reading it years ago and Simply cannot imagine reading other versions regularly, though I do read them at times for references!
You try for KJV. I mainly use the NIV for its simplicity and ease of understanding. I also like The Message Bible (TM), New Living Translation (NLT) and the Contemporary English Version (CEV) - all for the same reason. I do try to frequently refer to the KJV every now and then, sometimes you just need to hear and 'feel' the authority that translation carries.

italo:
Any of the Catholic versions. Because they were translated and interpreted under the supervision of the one Church Jesus founded.
which are those?

Yield, how body my sister? I modified the title to be a little bit more descriptive.

Sisi, thanks for posting the pics.

@Topic,
this is just gross beyond gross. One can admire the extreme dedication and incredible sacrifice such a feat requires but that's where my admiration ends. Use that passion towards some other profitable, meaningful end, not that piece of firewood hanging from his body. This is truly gross  lipsrsealed.

^Sad. The evil that existed in the US (and still does to a degree) not even 100yrs ago.

Thousands of innocent blacks were 'executed' - lynched - for simply being black. One is thankful for how far the country has come but men, what a terrible history to bear! May God deliver justice on behalf of these wronged souls.

as per the arabs, well i wouldnt deny that there may be an undercurrent of nationalism here (as blacks are viewed as invaders and scroungers). i think there is a lesson in this for all of us. STAY AWAY FROM MUSLIM ARAB COUNTRIES. THOSE PEOPLE ARE CRAZY. THEY ARE NUTS, A MAN WHO THINKS NOTHING OF BLOWING HIMSELF UP, OR CUTTING A MANS NECK ON LIVE TV IS NOT A MAN YOU WANT TO BE AROUND. AND IF YOUR LONG THROAT CARRY YOU GO THE MAN BACKYARD, WELL YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN OOOOO. ME I DONE TALKMY OWN SHA grin

Lol, here's 2 kiss kiss cheesy

Honestly just like you've confirmed I'll recommed this program and many others like FBI Files, Forensic files, Guilty or Innocent, On the case with Paula Zhan and many others for some posters on this forum I am sure after watching some of these programmes they'll have very little sympathy for convicted criminals.
Men . . . honestly I had to stop watching Forensic Files in particular. It was really making me paranoid lol. The way these killers randomly and casually choose their victims *one woman just happened to change her clothes forgetting to close the curtains and a guy saw her. Climbed in thru the window, killed her husband and then raped and killed her*  shocked  angry  . . . and then 20yrs from now when he's about to be executed some people will be crying about the 'brutality of the death penalty'.

Many of the perpetual religion section troublemakers are all here on one thread complaining about each other grin

@Frosbel (and others as well),
no complaints will be attended to that do not come attached with a link to a specific thread where the crime occured. Ya'll keep talking in general sentimental strokes . . . I asked for specific links on that other thread and suddenly all the 'complainers' disappeared.
