Enigma:Infact ehn my in-law, you have introduced perfectly an angle which I was going to go but was waiting for the right time ![]() @All, what qualifies a man as a "husband" or a woman as a "wife"? that he/she recited a few vows in front of an audience? that he/she lives in the same house as the other? that he/she are intimate regularly? that he/she takes care of the other and provides for them? As far as I'm concerned, a man (or woman) who beats his wife & children, a man who neglects his family and doesn't take care of their needs or provide for them, a man who abandons his family, a man who forsakes what has been entrusted to him to lay down his life for - is not a 'husband' or 'wife' and therefore does not neatly fall under the 'husband/wife' umbrella of directives & advice in the NT that pleads for patience and longsuffering, seperation for a while and then restoration . . . . . . as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure others will feel differently. |
Image123:Actually snr brother, na you talk am. I think you're confusing 'forgiveness' with 'consequence'. We may receive forgiveness but we must still face the consequence of our shortcomings. It is the perogative of the cheated spouse to take back the cheater or not - but he/she is certainly not obligated to by any stretch by any scripture verse - imho. The Corinth passage well handles your query on abuse, except you want to hear something else. She may depart, but can reconcile or stay unmarried. it seems that's what it says? The corinth passage handles it perfectly - for some people under certain circumstances. Remember now, not every directive in the bible was meant to apply to every single situation - and I honestly believe it is wrong to place such a heavy burden on christians. Fancy a woman abused for years by her husband. The children self were not spared from his beatings. She leaves him and takes her children. Years later she meets another man, a godly man who loves her and is willing to take care of her and the children. Meanwhile her ex-husband is still the abuser that he was and hasn't changed a bit. Are you telling me that scripture is saying she should turn down this godly man and still hold out for her ex-husband? Through no fault of hers, she must remain single until she dies? Is this really what the bible 'commands' from us? Oga make you no mind my question sha, and feel free not to answer, are you married? |
Image123:That one na your own interpretation of that verse you don forget say na you and me hammer this topic a while back . . . https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-313744.0.html And thank God we have grace to forgive our spouses 70 times 7 times unlike the old covenant. So if I cheat on my husband over and over again, he should continue to forgive me 70x7 times? Please think about this very carefully. On your 3rd issue, there's no crime or sin without a solid and sympathetic defense. All you need is a good lawyer/advocate.I'm not sure what you mean here . . . that the man probably has a 'solid & sympathetic defense' for beating his wife? But the Bible has helpfully given a separation go-ahead na.Yes - and we need to understand the context in which certain advices and charges and instructions were given, and how we can in turn apply them to our time & circumstance - and not begin to declare them as a blanket law to address every single case where there are marital problems. |
mazaje:I am peaches my dear. How you dey now? ![]() They will tell you to fast and pray. . . .My aunt is suffering from this right now. . . Church people keep telling her that she must endure, she must fast and she must pray, they insist that God will change him and she is not the only one out there that is going through this. . . .The husband keeps beating her all the time, once he slapped her in the presence of my younger brother. . .The next time she calls me and talks to me about fasting and praying am going to slap her through the phone. . .Seems she wants to be killed. . .She has to be alive to fast and pray, dead people don't fast and pray ohhhh. . . .I find this extremely distressing. Extremely. These people have allowed some false sense/belief of "following religion" to cloud eventually choke out the very basic instincts of love, mercy and compassion and DOING THE RIGHT THING that God Himself imprinted in all of us. Please do what you can to talk some sense into her so that it is not her funeral that will eventually snap them out of it. Things like this truly make me sad. Reminds me of this story "https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-245335.0.html" A 9yr old girl was ra.ped (had been consistently ra.ped since she was 6 btw) and got pregnant with twins. The mother of the girl approved an emergency life-saving abortion as it was threatning the life of the girl - and the Catholic Church excommunicates the mother and the doctors (but not the rapist oh, imagine) because "life must always be protected" and they broke the rules. I ask them in complete disgust - what about the life of the poor 9yr old girl? are your 'rules' and 'doctrines' more important than her life? Professing christians who insist a woman should stay in an abusive relationship and 'pray' - are your 'rules' and 'doctrines' more important than her life? than the lives of her children? This is what happens when people coldly follow the letter of the bible - with their hearts left behind. |
HISchild:*cough cough* ahem maybe you want to revise this statement? @Anextin, "God's take on divorce" . . . that is a tall order. All we have are the scriptures to guide us and the Holy spirit to lead us - and the two should not be in disagreement. There are 2 reasons given in the bible as grounds for divorce: Reason #1 - Adultery/Cheating Jesus said, "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery," (Matt. 19:9) Reason # 2 - Abandonment "Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace," (1 Cor. 7:15). That said, I'm going to add a 3rd reason . . . not because I am 'adding to the scriptures' but because the bible was not written or designed to provide answers for every single scenario we face in life. There are so many other unique circumstances that godly wisdom must be applied & used to decide what the best course of action is. The bible doesn't give instructions for every single scenario, but gives us general principles, godly guidelines, divine wisdom and the Holy Spirit by which we make difficult decisions. So . . . Reason # 3 - (Unique circumstances such as Physical Abuse). Now I know some of the previous posters disagree with me. That's fine. I would simply like to ask you all one question, and it will speak volumes about whether a literal & rigid application of scripture verses is more important than mercy, and whether religion is more important than compassion: A woman is being physically abused, beaten up by her husband daily, sometimes he even beats the children. She has tried everything she can but its only getting worse and she fears for herself & her children. In your opinion, can she divorce him? |
I was wondering if I'd have to open "yeye tennis fans on NL thread Pt 2" today . . . https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-674035.0.html@poster, thanks for opening a topic jare. Kvitova crashing out is a reflection of how sorry women's tennis is right now. Super Mukina! ![]() |
Enigma:She be Super Mukina, she has super powers I cannot even begin to touch I'm sure she'll modify in a second.PS thanks also for your explanation --- obviously you've got my gist of "there are myriad permutations".Myriad indeed my in-law! lol. I've been following the other tithing thread and this post of yours really sumed it up: All this rigmarole really would be unnecessary if Christians and especially the preachers/teachers/"pastors" would really and truly follow or teach according to the simple New Testament message of 2 Corinthians 9:7 interpreted in accordance with Jesus' teaching and emphasis on helping the needy, Paul's stressing of helping poor Christians and general consensus of supporting churches' reasonable* financial costsEach man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. |
Enigma, I can't modify your poll. & I don't personally think the 'added explanation' takes away ![]() I agree with Kunle. It depends on your definition of tithe. If its the modern day definition of strictly 10%, then Mr A. If going by strictly the biblical definition, then none of the above. Not to take anything away from Mr A & B . . . I personally fancy Mrs C style of giving to the others for 2 reasons: 1 she thinks enough about a specific need - and then meets it, rather than merely giving money. 2 And also because most of her giving is generally done outside of the 'church'. Personally, I've never been good at 'systematic' percentage giving - even when I was 'tithing'. I'm more of a free, spontaneous spirit, as it touches my heart I like to give without the 'contraints' of a particular % - so sometimes its small, other times its not - bottomline is it comes from my heart - which I believe is what makes it generous in the sight of God. Leave $50 on his table where he will find it later & not know it came from you, take this friend out who's been having a tough stretch to a great dinner and cheer her up, buy some blankets & socks and hand them out during the cold on the street corner & spend a little time talking to (not necessarily 'preaching' to) strangers, mummy needs a new blender I will bring one next time, a friend needs cash for school tuition - give her all the money I intended to use in fixing my car since the repair is not that critical, buy some extra plantains at the store and save some for Joyce since I know she loves them, invite your friends & fellow believers over for dinner often and share in true communion etc etc I believe the whole point of giving - especially in our context - is seeing a need - and then using whatever God has given you to try to meet that need - rather than a routine of handing out an envelope at church - not that there's anything wrong with that oh, we should still definitely support our local church. I simply believe the former is a much more dynamic way of giving and taking care of each other and it involves your heart on a much more intimate level. ^Just my own 2centies ![]() |
I half-expected this to be a joke when I first saw the title . . . not sure why since the notoriety of these Floridian 'pastors' at the Lakeland complex is well known around the country. Because of just 15grand, she's embarrasing herself like this . . . smh . . . its worse than pathetic, this is just plain sad. |
wordtalk:Settled then! Welcome back Viaro. Glad to hear you're okay . . . I hope your recovery has been swift and well. Be blessed. dare2think:Aww Dare you're just too kind ![]() |
^of course it doesn't matter if anyone wants to change ids, its a free forum afterall. what some of us are leary of are people who hide behind new ids and try to pass themselves off as someone else - especially if that person says they're christian. but as far as I'm concerned, wordtalk is innocent until proven guilty . . . unlike some other people ![]() |
Uhm soooooo . . . . wordtalk, you're not denying the Viaro allegations? ![]() |
Joagbaje:Oga sir, I'm afraid you're going to have to do a little bit better than the above. "The spirit was with them not in them"? Just one verse from the OT, Ex 31: 1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills I said the spirit of Christ/Holy Spirit/God's spirit has always been moving and transforming the hearts of men - to which you said you agreed. If you now say it was impossible for the spirit of God to ever dwell or be 'in' a man prior to Christ then that's a bit of a problem. Men like Abraham, David (a man after God's own heart self) merely had the Holy Spirit visit them and leave but not dwell in them? hmmmm . . . .The point I was trying to make is that you're approaching the sacrifice of Jesus in a very rigid, and especially linear way. The power of Calvary stretches both forward and backward in time, echoing through every nation, culture and even religion - and is not limited to time as we understand it - justifying as many who believed in God and had faith which produced good works. Abraham did not have to 'wait' to till Christ rose again before he was 'born again' and officially 'acceptable' in the sight of God (though he and the rest of us are waiting to receive completely the promise as Hebrews teaches) - the sacrifice of Christ (slain from the foundations of the world) already justified him and many others. Gal 3:8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”[d] 9 So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. Rom 4 What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” . . . We have been saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness. 10 Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before! 11 And he received circumcision as a sign, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. Abraham's faith was credited (please note the past tense) to him as righteousness even before he was circumcised, a righteousness that was bought by Christ's blood. And if the gospel was 'announced in advance to him' what does this tell us? Does this impact your mordernist defintion of what it means to be 'born again'? Enigma:Lol Detective Enigma! lol oya oga Jo, please address this as well. |
Joagbaje:Hmmm . . . okay oh. We're going to have to leave the cards on the table. I think there is a fundamental flaw in your definition of what it means to be 'born again'. The Spirit of Christ has been operating in the hearts of men 'since the foundations of the world' and transforming them - not just since the physical manifestation on Calvary. God is not limited by our perception of time sir. To be born again is not a matter of reciting a confession - but rather one of the heart which God almighty recognizes and declares as 'righteous' - just as Romans 2 tells us. Matthew 27:52-53The rest of your post is a matter of interpretation . . . I think I have actually discussed this a bit with you in the past. I appreciate you took the time to address it, though I disagree . One last bit though . . . You had previously said "being born again is a spiritual rebirth, a change of nature from humanity to divinity, a recreation of the human spirit" . . . which I agreed with. If being born again is as you say, how is it that God's spirit was able to dwell with certain men in the OT without them being 'born again'? So God would have them 'justified' to a certain degree but not 'fully born again'? The OT tells us Enoch was so close to God that God "took him" . . . where would you suppose Enoch is now since he too was never 'born again'? (somehow I expect you to say he too was also one of those Jesus preached to? ) |
Joagbaje:Okay sir, no problem. Precisely , being born again is a spiritual rebirth, a change of nature from humanity to divinity, a recreation of the human spirit. This change makes a man part of Gods family. He doesn't need to try to make heaven . He is already a heavenly being. The christian race is not about making heaven, it's about perfection. We run a race into perfection or maturity. When a christian refuse to grow, other evils can come in. And some may even loose that which they have.At first blush I could not make head or tail of this^ . . . but after a second reading I think I understand what you're saying though I think you're muddying the waters . . . Born again - yes, agreed it is a spiritual rebirth. 'Christian race' (as you put it) - growing and maturing in the faith and teachings of Jesus No disagreements there. But your application (and eventually implication) of these terms is what is problematic. I will ask one question to demonstrate why: Was Abraham 'born again'? Did he run a 'christian race'? Will he too be in the kingdom of God? and to further illustrate the problem with your quote: Joagbaje:Hmmm . . . this is a very big problem considering Jesus said "Jn 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. So how can people that were never born again on earth suddenly be 'saved' in heaven with this 'futuristic salvation at judgement'? (Note Jesus did not make distinctions btw wether such a man heard/did not hear the gospel, He simply said a man must be born again). So if a man must be born again to enter the KOH, then how will the saints of old get in since according to your doctrine they were never 'born again' either? Perhaps the problem is with your definition of what it means to be 'born again'? |
redsun:I'm glad you at least recognize and not paint everyone with the same brush. montelik:Honestly. Crimes like these that do not make sense on any kind of level . . . they will go and sit behind bars the rest of their lives while their victim lays 6feet under ![]() |

Please folks . . . the actions of a few racists do not determine the sentiment of the entire race - no more than it does for the blacks who break the law. There are plenty of caucasians who have fought long and hard for minority rights, it is grossly unfair to lump them all into one nasty category. Redsun, you said "oyinbos are synonymous with hate" . . . I look into the face of my nephew-in-law and godson who is yes white, and I cannot but hope that you will meet and know and interact with enough 'white folks' for you to quickly realize that: "Not every black man is your brother, and not every white man is your enemy". davidylan: ![]() |
Ahem, tpia & frosbel, pls no fighting. Bro Frosbel, pls see my comment in the mod thread. Thanks again ehn ![]() |
Frosbel, thanks for heeding like a gentleman I appreciate that. And as a general rule, all topics related to islam should go in the islamic section. We haven't been enforcing it as strictly in the past because it was rare & especially if its islam-related but meant for the general population. But lately there's been a barage of islamic topics and regular posters are complaining. So from now on - all islamic topics should be posted in the islam section. If you post your threads within the rules and try not to provoke anger, you should be fine. Thanks ehn. |
According to the list: 1-Italian 2-French 3-Spanish 4-Czech 5-Naija 6-Irish Accents are a very tricky thing though . . . it all depends on the person talking. I have heard italian accents that I liked and some that I just hate (including one dude like this that I work with) I wish I could give him some mouthwash to clean out that yeye thing. Same for the french, some sound sweet and others just plan annoying - those who talk mostly thru their nose - what's sexy about not being able to hear what the hell it is you're saying? I think this list is built on imagination & fantasy. The irish accent to me is the worst on the planet. I'll take ching-chung-choo before I take irish ![]() African accents in general (ehm minus Liberians ) sound nice when the person is speaking with a solid command of the english language . . . not these yeye children these days that are throwing slangs all over the place and cannot speak proper english with confidence. |
LagosShia:LasgoShia, I glanced through the threads and what I see is one man giving his own interpretation/version of islam/muslim history - the same way you, other muslims & atheists do with christianity everyday in the section. Please post a particular quote where he insulted you or anyone. I do agree some of his threads are provocative in nature and I will ask him to ease up a bit, he's a gentleman so I know he'll be glad to - but I cannot muzzle his right to free NL speech. Thanks. |
^One man's insult is another man's freedom of speech. Please provide links where Frosbel has broken forum rules and rest assured he will be attended to by the admin. You do realize the mods cannot see what's going on on every single thread? there is a complaint thread on top of the page you can go to anytime. Till then he is free to air his opinions just like everyone else - unless he breaks the rules. You don't like what he's saying - its not by force to read his posts or for you to stay here in the general section - the muslim section was created so you guys can have peace - but you have refused to stay there and enjoy your NL time in peace. Frosbel and co would not post those topics if you guys don't constantly reply him and fuel his fire. You're certainly free to post wherever you want, but don't complain if you don't like the content outside of the muslim section. |
^Lol. The common has way too much traffic right now, maybe later .But seriously, Jenwitemi is on point. You guys are constantly in here, posting topics and fighting with Frosbel and co. You have your own playground, yet you're crowding ours. Abeg find one small toy truck and go and play in one corner jor. |

Jenwitemi:Abeg go siddon jor. These threads appeared not that long ago and have all been moved. Mods are not online 24/7, cut us some slack. LagosShia, you guys have your own section, yet you post more in the general section. |
^lol. We can't know what's going on in every thread now. Moved. |

Whenever stories like these emerge, they're such a strong reminder that in spite of the strides America has made in race issues, there are still some low-life racist murdering scum-bags not worthy of their next breath still living in America . . . http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/08/17/mississippi.hate.crime/index.html [flash=500,400] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z5SRoPAhIo?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="349"[/flash] -Some white teenagers jumped into their car @ 5am and drove 16miles to the predominantly black section of town, their only aim was to find a black person they could "mess up" -They found a random black man by his car (the poor dude just minding his own business), taunted him with all kinds of racial slurs, brutally beat him up and then ran over him with their SUV - killing him. -Then they went to macdonalds and ate & gloated over what they'd done. They didn't realize the entire thing was caught on camera. The electric chair would be too soft a punishment How can you just snuff out the life of an innocent man so callously? This is so disgusting and infuriating. And why do these things constantly happen mostly in the south? ![]() |
