In fact, I forget the philosopher who warned leaders about being extremely loved by their people else they slide into an undoing comfort. |

Gozzzy: Is this not the same reason Buhari's government is detaining their leader? They've had this coming long before Buhari came to government. But for his resolute stance, these are the people who would wake up one day, take hostage of the state incl. government house and declare allegiance to Palestine while technically still within Nigeria. This is a worse than BH in the pipes. |

Even the other guy who made the gaffe was just not smart in his choice of words, he must have read the body language of his boss, the AGF. He's the example of people we call loud-mouthed. The AGF must have made some passing comments suggesting what the Aide stated. Sir, you're not of your own volition once you're appointed to government. Wonder why civil servants don't grant interviews for their opinions not to talk of a Presidential Aide. |

By default, some people have just decided to go the opposite route to this administration. Whether logical, objective or not. If PMB says white is white, they'll say no it's black and if he says otherwise, then they'll say he must be a blind dullard. What business has agbero with overload? Most of these Kwarans voted APC in Governorship, Senate and Presidency. Why are some non-Kwarans now choosing to stand behind a Saraki that they would have definitely voted against if they could change their state of registration prior to the 2015 elections? Default opposition. Remember Saraki was voted in Kwara not Nigeria. 1 Like |

A lot of people calling Buhari a dictator are failing to realize that in every sane government, the institutions and agencies of government have a level of independence to execute their mandate. A mandate that usually comes from existing laws and not the President's table. Because we have witnessed a lot of abuse of office and impunity in the past doesn't mean those agencies cannot be restructured to take their roles seriously, independent of the President. If Buhari has an agenda against every opposition as they say, at least he's doing so with the use of the courts which means that the individuals have a right to defend themselves. Imagine the equivalent in the military era, where some of the people in courts today would have already been convicted, perhaps killed by now, whether truly guilty or not. We must be mindful of the antics of political elites who, in the past, have stolen this country bare and are now playing the 'witch-hunt' or 'oppressed' or 'victim' card. At least they have a chance to prove the allegations false by hiring good lawyers and by the superiority of court arguments, whether truly guilty or not. Finally, we need to remember that the main opposition party, the PDP, remains alive and well. So, people claiming that this dictator is against any opposition need to reconstruct their narratives. 1 Like 1 Share |

justy15: Good comment. But remember that part of the justification for Lagos comes from VAT. Lagos contributes about 65% to 70% of VAT to the Federation Account, which is shared by all states. However, oil has created the most controversies so you find people talking about the OIL and not the VAT. |

Schematics: I'm only responding because of your reference to deep thinking. While I agree that tomatoes and oil are different, my deep thinking tells me that comparing them in terms of pricing is also wrong. Oil is a natural resource like water, sand and air that nobody's effort put there in the first place. The ownership tussle over oil is simply because it is scarce and not found everywhere. Plus, the extraction of it leads to serious environmental and economic hardship for people in the area. Nobody fights over ownership of air, sand or water (at least in Nigeria) because every region has a relatively sufficient quantity and so it's not a commercial resource in Nigeria or on the international markets. On the other hand, tomatoes do not appear naturally and so you have to grow them with some effort. This is why we have to pay for tomatoes and conversely we have to pay people in oil-producing regions (derivation) for exploring the oil. 1 Like |

modath: Thinking about how genuine 'counterpart funding' is, I can't even advise you to agree with Fayose anymore. While he appears objective, I'm sure he remembers that the World Bank and other multilateral agencies don't give you anything free until you bring your counterpart fund despite it being colored as an AID or a GRANT. Fayose knows better that counterpart funding is a valid development finance model. |

DoubleDee4U: Counterpart funding is entrenched in development and not a scam. If only the APC states agree to it because it's an APC promise, then sooner than later PDP states will cry foul and marginalization. Development is a tough sacrifice, not a bed of roses and free gifts. 2 Likes |

dadebayo1: While I'm also tempted to agree with Fayose on this one, I suddenly remember that this same technique is used in development. When the World Bank or other multilateral agency says they are providing you X dollars, if you really check the documentation, you'll find something called 'counterpart funding'. Counterpart funding is a tested financing plan to ensure program sustainability because, by that, the beneficiaries are supposed to take ownership of the program/project rather than see it as alien to them. Politics / Re: Only True Federalism Can Resolve Nigeria’s Problems – Ambode by Joarams(m): 6:36am On Jun 13, 2016 |
[quote author=EverestdeBliu post=46515122] That's just the simple solution; But the North will not like this, they'll fight tooth and nails to water down this simple solution. states don't have control over resources found within its territory. If a state wants to harness any resource in its region,it must first obtain licence from the federal government. The centre owns the land and resources within the boundary of Nigeria...now you see that's a huge limitation to development No Sir, you're wrong. Here are facts: 1. True Federalism has nothing to do with regions, it's states and states only because regions are dead and simply history, so forget that; 2. In our constitution, all Land is vested in state Governors. This is why C of O is not issued by the President but by the Governors. So governors don't need any kind of license from federal to plant palm oil sir. Check out what Lagos, Rivers and Cross River started doing with rail despite it being an exclusive activity of the FG. Did the FG under GEJ stop them?; 3. It is true that some resources and activities are on the Exclusive list for central control but there are also quite a number on the concurrent list for control by either the Centre or the States. The truth is a lot of state governments have become LAZY because of oil money that comes monthly. This makes it convenient for them to shout true federalism and blame the Centre while not actually planning the harder route of beginning true federalism by raising IGR. Take Lagos for instance, it took survival (when OBJ seized huge LGA funds) for Lagos to start raising IGR and looking critically at the concurrent list for more areas to raise revenue. It was not simply a deliberate act to become independent and practice true federalism. I hope you can see that the chants for true federalism while very valid can sometimes be a chicken and egg story. |

Adults debating and talking about 'sending' adult children abroad to school. Are we foreclosing the daughter's options and a right to have her choice because of her father? If her father owned an accounting firm and she got inclined to study engineering, will she still have to work for her father? Why do the children of doctors or professors not all become doctors or professors? If their parents are successful, why don't they all simply chose the same profession and be successful. Something bad is happening to the level of reasoning in public discourse. 5 Likes |

Politics / Re: CCT Trial: Tribunal Adjourns Saraki's Case Indefinitely.. by Joarams(m): 3:21pm On Jun 01, 2016 |
deebsman1: You set your hopes too high and so they will often get dashed. If PMB were a saint, he'll be in the next world (at least, by some of our religious beliefs). Yet, he's been shown repeatedly to be a man of integrity. What that means in context, is relative and perhaps subject for another debate. My advise to you right now is to reset your expectations of the PMB administration by accepting that Nigeria has been and is currently a serious mess, in governance terms. To think that there'll be a magic wand used after which all problems would vanish is to be unrealistic, in every deep sense of the word. I recommend you read The Road Less Travelled by M. Scott Peck. |
Politics / Re: CCT Trial: Tribunal Adjourns Saraki's Case Indefinitely.. by Joarams(m): 3:01pm On Jun 01, 2016 |
kenny987: Are you guys sincere a bit at all? Will it not amount to impunity if you found out it was PMB that ordered the trial in the first place not to talk of ending it abruptly? The kind of powers you ascribe to the President (even if used by past presidents) are not constitutional...they're all infested with impunity. The President has no authority to try (or set free) at any court of competent jurisdiction. He can only request the Attorney-General to do so, for which the AG has absolute authority. The CCT trial predates the current AG and the President has come out severally to say that it's not in his place to be influencing the courts. That said, if the people who 'sponsored' prosecution against Saraki decide to drag the case out or in fact withdraw their case, how then can that be the President's business? My interest is in moving forward and joining debates that can help build a better Nigeria. This President has shown that he can allow institutions of governance assume their roles effectively without them taking political orders from him. Now, if they indirectly pander to him by only prosecuting those not in his 'good books' but with a valid case, how should that be blamed on the President? Rather, it's evidence that we have a long way to go on the journey to effective governance. And whoever believed that Rome was built in a day, let him be deceived that PMB would clean up our rotten institutions in 4 years. |
Business / Re: Why Can't A Country Just Keep Printing Money And Become Rich by Joarams(m): 1:31pm On Jun 01, 2016 |
What you describe is not completely off the plate like you may think. The concept is valid and used in a strategic manner (though not as careless as you suggest). There's a limit to printing money and some people have talked about inflation on this thread. If you want to understand the fundamental concept, then read about Quantitative Easing. It's not rocket science and believe me, I'm a physicist! In addition, another capacity that must be in place prior to the decision to print more money is the government's ability to track money supply I.e. M0, M1 and M2...as accurately as possible. Without this, there would be more chaos created. 2 Likes |

No insane politician will try to endanger the life of the Commander-in-Chief when visiting his state. That's simply asking for a quick leveling war. The security forces protect the President better than themselves. But a peaceful and low-key protest may still be in order. |
