Dharkchild: Respect to all the bosses in the house, u guys have answered most of my questions already and it was fun reading peoples experience and advice here.

Hopefully, I would be coming to the UK in sept, University of Sheffield to be specific for my masters degree.

From personal research, this thread and other UK threads on Nairaland, ve been able to find out that staying in private property is cheaper than staying in school accommodation.

Ensuite room in school accommodation would cost me about £112.50pw but after looking through some property sites online, I was able to get a private property (ensuite room in a shared apartment but kitchen shared) with all bills inclusive about 10 mins walk or 3 mins drive from school for £75pw.

I made some findings about the property agents to confirm that it was not scam (just had to double check) and I also had a friend in Birmingham check out the apartment for me and sent me pictures which I was okay with.

The agent sent me a contract document which I am okay with but have to sign and scan to them. The challenge now is that I have to pay a deposit of £200 to secure the apartment and the rent can be paid when I arrive in Sheffield. The deposit is the only way to secure the apartment and I am willing to pay but I still kinda sceptical.

Do you think it is advisable to go ahead and sign the contact and payment of the deposit considering the fact that I was ok with the internet pictures and the pictures my friend took. I really would not like to lose the apartment Cos it is ensuite and all bills are inclusive as most other apartment ve seen are not ensuite and I kinda like a lil privacy, I also think most apartment close to school might have been taken before resumption.

PS those looking for student apartments just google "student apartment in your area" like student apartment in Birmingham or Aberdeen etc....... Take your time to go through the search result, limit your search to what you want.... like room in House share....., studio......, bills inclusive etc. when you see any property you like, you can use google maps to check the proximity of the property to your school by entering the postcode of your school and the apartment you are considering. Hope this helps someone. Cheers
Its not a good idea to pay for something you have not seen physically especially student accommodation, you got no clue when that picture was taken, for you to sign tenancy agreement you need to see the condition of the room, the landlord will see your passport and visa and sometimes a guarantor and make photocopy of them, the tenancy agreement is the only thing that protects your deposit.

Don't risk it, just my opinion.

Rossikk: Have you ever done a search on recorded murders in Nigeria before opening your big dirty mouth to ask ''who keeps such records in Nigeria''? Have you even visited the Nigerian Police website to know what they're up to? Do you care? (Need I ask?) Fact is the Nigerian police, like every other police force, keeps the records on annual reported murders, and there are nowhere near 10,000 a year. Nigerians do not walk around with, or keep guns in their houses, and are not as violent as Americans.

World homicide stats:

Nigeria: 1.29 per 100,000 population

USA: 5.22 PER 100,000 population

http://chartsbin.com/view/1454
What is that all about? What is the point of that coming from you?

coogar: but what do you guys really expect? london is the capital - its expected that the cost of living in london would be much higher than the other cities in the united kingdom!
That is an established fact, my point is that people should look outside London or shop around non-affluence areas and stop moaning about how expensive London is.
It depends on salary which you getting paid. I personally dont think staying in London while you earning less than £40,000 is a nice idea due to how expensive and how tight the place is. If you have a wife and you both earning £40,000 collectively, then that's still good. Staying in London without earning well is not ideal as it would be hard for you to save money. i know people who just left London due to how expensive it is and have relocated outside which is cheaper and better. Places like Portsmouth are even cheap and good quality of life is there. its not like London where everyone is in a hurry.I dont understand why a lot of people chose to stay in London saying there are lots of opportunities there, You can stay outside London and drive in to London if you have a job,its much better. personally,i feel London is overcrowded,
. .with over-priced accommodation and other services, some friends studying there are paying £400pcm for a shared flat, this is even single bedroom not double.

Who keeps such record in Nigeria? You quoted that figure because US keeps the record.

coogar: 3-bedroom houses can go as high as £1800(bills inclusive) in most parts of london. how can you say £600/month can get a 2-3 bedroom when sometimes a one bedroom flat can be £1000 a month in london suburbs?
I said in most UK cities and that was why i asked where his friend is studying, in many cities outside London 2-3 bedroom flat will go for less than £600.

Godogwu: Its been echoing for a bit, I know UK isnt the most expensive but it's quite expensive. I know this because practically 40% of my classmates from secondary school in Nigeria are in Jand as international students, 30% in Nigeria another 20% in Canada and about 10% of us are littered in either US, Gh, Malaysia etc.... When we discuss our spendings we find out that the peeps in Jand spend a lot more. I have a friend who is sharing a 3 bed house with two other people and she pays £600 a month and for a second I was like " whoa!" that's over $1200 which is over N200k and in a year would be about N2.5m ( I could rent a full 4 bed or 5 bed house in lekki or a 3 or 4 bed house in Wuse or Garki with that). Even though the US is relatively cheaper considering that I pay about $620/ month ( campus shared housing), it's still a very high cost of living, facts still remains I can't live anywhere outside Nigeria.
Which city in the UK is your friend studying? That seems like an exaggerated figure because in many cities in the UK that is what you pay for 2 or 3 bedroom flat.

If she really pays such amount then she must either be dull not to have noticed that is a rip-off or she is trying to show-off while she is dying quietly .
