Politics / Re: The Yoruba Kiriji Wars (1877 - 1893) by Kilode1: 12:12am On Feb 08, 2012 |
DK's ancestors (Ogbomoso) were warriors in their own right too though, I once read that the town acted as a place of refuge for warriors escaping from war, they felt safe within the walls of ogbomoso, that is big deal. |

hercules07: Yes but that is the problem with warrior kingdoms though, too much sinew too little sense. Of all the actors in that war, Ibadan was in a great position to learn from the lesson of the fallen Oyo Empire, they did not. |

I think the problem with the Ibadans then was their inability to temper their hunger for war with good foresight, apparently they underestimated the determination of an alliance with little to lose. The Ekiti alliance defeated them on several fronts because they were able to get other kingdoms on their side. |

^ Ok back to topic. WRT to the Ogedengbe pic, Looks like he was superimposed on the background to me. The pic with his lieutenants is the same as the single pic. I may be wrong but that background looks cropped, maybe it's a restoration of his old photograph. That being said, I'm sure we built great houses with local materials then. One of our great queens, Ooni Luwoo of Ife is quite famous for her pavements and architectural work. 1 Like |

^ It was a question Jo. But You mean British naval rafts right? Was that the reason why Oba Akinsemoyin invited those animalistic portuguese in to trade in slaves? That Also fanned the embers of war in the "Yoruba" hinterland. Everybody trying to sell something. You dropped the ball Eko folks, you guys should have covered that flank properly, you let the long nosed liars in |

He is ordinarily right of centre, but he is gradually shifting to far left of centre. Can somebody explain what this means in Nigerian politics. Define Right, Center and left with examples of leading ideological figures. I want to think I'm a tiny bit politically aware, but I'm yet to see any well articulated description of these ideologies in Nigerian politics. What are the values and ideas that represent left, right or center?? Except he's talking about the left and right of Crude Oil money sha |
Politics / Re: The Yoruba Kiriji Wars (1877 - 1893) by Kilode1: 3:00am On Feb 07, 2012 |
a few of my take away History lessons from the Kiriji wars: Confederacy is possible if we can find common ground ( present day Ijaw nation seems to be learning this too, hopefully) Powerful Kingdoms can fall if they become too haughty and careless i.e Oyo Empire There are few forces greater than the will power of a people pushed againt the wall. (The Ekiti Parapo Alliance symbolized this lesson) The present Yoruba nation is an amalgamation of different Kingdoms within their own rights, bounded by common interests and the quest for survival. We already fought this civil war, no point fighting it again (well, until another power hungry section decides to lord it over the rest of us) Ekt-bear, you can also read "Movements, borders, and identities in Africa By Toyin Falola, some great analysis in there too to help with your questions. |

Politics / Re: Sng Concludes Plans For Protest Against Corruption by Kilode1: 10:42pm On Feb 06, 2012 |
oyb: LOL But you know they will spin this and find an excuse to oppose the idea. When Bakare and co came out to oppose fuel subsidy, they attacked them, saying they should be protesting against corruption Now he's organizing against corruption, they are screaming he should go and fight Boko haram If civil society groups cower and decide to go against Boko, these same sycophants will find another excuse, maybe they will want them to fight Ghana then. They don't want change, they prefer continuity and the corrupt status quo. |

It means nothing. The thieves and thugs benefitting from the struggles of the Niger Delta people have the support of the looters of Nigeria. They are their co-oil bunkerers and co-Conspirators. This faux amnesty program will continue to enrich a few hooligans and their while the masses in the Niger Delta suffer. “But let us state that it was not the governor who was disgraced by the stoning. Instead, it was the president himself. Now, if stoning is a yardstick for non-performance, are we also right to say that the burning down of Mr. President’s house in 2007, in the run-up to that year’s general elections, was also an act of rejection by the people of the state? Two thieves throwing stones at each other. Bayelsa children are there with little healthcare and poor school facilities despite the billions allocated to that small state. Yet, these Bunch of looters in power are fighting over hotel contract |

Politics / Re: Sovereign Nairaland Conference by Kilode1: 3:24am On Feb 03, 2012 |
Beaf: Ok then. If I may ask, what is your opinion on GEJ's obvious lack of interest in leading the call for a Sovereign National Conference? Do you think he will change his mind? Any thoughts on why he's not leading the push for a SNC? Especially when several regional political pressure groups have called for it, including MEND, MNN, OPC, Civil society, even some serving Governors and leaders of thought across all regions. If you ask me, I'll say the climate is right, even Boko Haram seems interested sef. I'm asking you these questions because I believe the biggest hindrance to true Federalism is lack of political will. Mr president can use his presidential pulpit to preach this idea, carry it to the 4 corners of Nigeria and it appears he will get a lot of support. Why do you think he's holding back I'll appreciate your take on this. |
