ProgrammingRe: C++ Or Java: Which Way To Go? by kodewrita(m): 6:44pm On Jun 18, 2009
kencas:
C++ is good for drivers programming, but every solutin from C++ can also be solved by Java.Java is more good for the market
ever tried writing drivers in Java. every accessed microcontrollers (of course you can with JavaComm or Rxtx) but the advanced stuff will still be written in C++.

Java is simply Modern COBOL(not in obsolence . I mean its the popular business language).

Programming languages are also about the style of thinking.

C++ coders by virtue of the rigor of the language tend to be geared towards writing efficient code while Java programmers tend to be architecture astronauts (Google that. cant explain.) C++ programmers tend to be more Comp Sci aware (have more knowledge of data structures and how they work since they implement them using pointers). Java guys (like ME) just LOVE the Collections API. We dont care how it works.

@ the end of the day, a bad coder is a bad coder in ANY language.
ProgrammingRe: C++ Or Java: Which Way To Go? by kodewrita(m): 6:38pm On Jun 18, 2009
Love this guy. I was at this junction a few years ago and i let people convince me that C++ is outmoded and I went down the Java track. THank God, I found my way back.

Master C++ and then get Thinking In Java by Bruce Eckelt to make the transition to Java when necessary.

Get the Qt toolkit. its so beautiful, i had to get the Java API (Qt Jambi toolkit). It has widgets and controls that Swing can't dream of. and its cross-platform too (remember the Java "Write Once Run Anywhere" gospel anyway).

Java, you can easily pickup anytime as long as you get the knack of thinking in terms of objects or entities and also develop the habit of looking up the 30000+ classes and methods in documentation anytime you get stuck (Thats why they invented Javadoc).

@
ebogentle:
I beg to disagree with you. If you were doing courses with names like Numerical calculus/Computational Mathemetics/ Computational Fluid dynamics/ Computational seismics/ etc, the best program for it is still Fortran. The name says it all. Meanwhile what you should recommend if you were  ever in that position is the use of updated versions. You are probably angry because u only experienced Fortran 77. Well, Fortran has come a long way too with Fortran 90, Fortran 95 and Fortran 2003. Intel still have their own dedicated fortran flavour. It may interest you to know that the 2003 version has OOP in it.

I still maintain that as long as it's FORmula TRANslation you are working on, then FORTRAN is it.
And by the way, no other program comes close for use in Parallel computing which is like the bride of performance computing at the moment.

I hated fortran while doing my Bachelors too cos the flavour i was taught was older than me.lol
Fortran clogs your brain. that is not how Man was meant to program. I am not surprised all the cute girls in my class hated it (of course we geeks became the superheroes but thats a story for another day). The whole point of all those courses is to teach you how to think algorithmically and to apply programming to numerical problems.

C is much better and is simpler than FORTRAN. You can carry the entire function listing (just 80 functions in Kernighan and Ritchie version) in your head and still do amazing things. besides, it is instantly usefull cos there are reams of C code online. Your arguments about scientific utility can also be made for MATLAB which is a much better environment to do what you are doing.
PoliticsRe: Umaru Yar’adua Regime Launches $5 Million Online War by kodewrita(m): 6:28pm On Jun 18, 2009
I still dont understand the typical naija programmer. Yaradua launches a $5 million for you people and the best you can do is agitate instead of finding ways to chop. what stops u from doing that and then going to the opposition to build something else?

Besides, Great Firewalls (Like the one in china) dont really work except for the incompetent and the non-savvy people. Check the recent Twitter revolution in Iran where people are using web proxies to bypass Iranian filters and also using anti filters. It just cant be stopped.

Besides if they make us angry, we can take down those sites any given day. A DDos only requires knowledge of javascript, page refreshes, HTTP requests and social networking nowadays. All in a day's work. grin Tue

WebmastersRe: Assess This Site. (dont Mince Your Words. Ouch) by kodewrita(op): 7:42pm On May 04, 2009
As I said earlier. Ouch. Thanks. About the font(thot so too).

Made a few new friends offline and their comments were similar though more pointed cos it was in person. New designer coming online this week and he's more of graphic designer turned web designer not coder-turned-designer.

Getting VBulletin scares me cos I have looked into the face of SMF code and that was the face of evil. Playing with the site software has really pushed my PHP programming practices ahead 10x. I just love the idea of an almost infinitely extensible site and the logical next step after plugins is, i'll leave that for now.

Will make it more focused. Thanks linxon.

Need more .

AdvertsRe: Free Web Design For People Of All Types. No Strings Attached by kodewrita(op):
You can assess some of my design input here. This is one of a set of sites I launched that are coming online in the year.

www.naijafreetalk.com : New nigerian forum. Main defining feature (THIS IS NOT A NAIRALAND CLONE. We are not installing simple machines forum software now or anytime in the future. I appreciate the work that has gone into that software but its too rigid and stifles creativity with all the monster features that you end up not needing). www.naijafreetalk.com is clean and fast. I aim to make it so so sweet to use.

I want to create a forum experience thats not so regular . I cant count the number of Nairaland look-alikes and if there's anything you can expect from my work, its this. I AM NOT A COPYCAT and refuse to be ordinary.

My hope, prayer and focus is to ensure that my work becomes a thing for others to follow.
WebmastersAssess This Site. (dont Mince Your Words. Ouch) by kodewrita(op): 7:38pm On Apr 18, 2009
Please beta test this site.

Dont mince your words.

I am building it on an iterative schedule.

Extensions and new features are developed USUALLY as a result of user requests. I have some plugins developed that are coming online soon.

what i need now is beta testers who are willing to test and suggest new features. The latest plugin developed now is a special holiday extension (keeping that for now pending your replies).

I have already tested with friends but i want people who have no direct contact with me to assess the design and features.

I am not afraid of bad criticism.

The sucess of the site is the focus right now.

I intend to make the speed of change and site feature upgrades our core feature and to build as much as possible the most user-friendly web app.

please assess and preferably join.

Hi. I need candid analysis of the site from people who are not my friends. I have alpha-tested the site among friends and where I am concerned, they tend to softsoap issues. I need people to beta-test this site and give cold, hard truth.

Sorry if i am being direct but this are the things I would love to know:

1. the page design
2. The feature list (i deliberately omitted some.)
3. The site copy (the written stuff. my welcome message and other things). Just check and tell me what you think.

Preferably you can do that on the site.

WebmastersRe: Your Favorite Nigerian Website(s)? by kodewrita(m): 7:11pm On Apr 18, 2009
the one and only

http://www.naijafreetalk.com.

I like it for three reasons.

1. I designed and launched it.
2. I have yet to see any other forum( nairaland) included that is that configurable and extensible.
3. cos I know whats coming up soon.

[MODIFICATION] Its a few months later and this site has so far not grown in spite of the powerful features. Lesson Learnt, wait for the next app.
ProgrammingRe: Java Coming To End The Future Of Information Technology by kodewrita(m): 11:29pm On Dec 05, 2008
@ A-40 please tell them again so they'll know. No language is going to kill the rest. we'll never think the same way. the money-oriented nigerian programmer will still write PHP, .NET and Java (depending on where the contracts are coming from) and a select few will program in languages like Erlang, Euphoria, Lisp and of course the new Ruby crowd.
Straight C guys will still laugh at us and just code in traffic on third mainland while python guys would laugh even harder and write code that looks like it came out of the oxford dictionary.
def codeclass

end def

Pardon my poor python, its been a long while.

We skinny people do not like being called skinny. besides, i have found out, it doesn't really matter a lot for most things. As for sex, I feel its like the different between and Isuzu trooper and your Formula One. Maneuverability and pure sweetness as against raw stamina and IMPACT.enough said.

Christianity EtcRe: Im Tired Of Clapping My Hands In Church. by kodewrita(m): 10:27pm On Nov 27, 2008
I guess since you are all focusing on clapping as separate from praising God, then its worth saying so. The issue here is do you really want to praise God and do you see any point in praising or worshipping him. Do you derive any personal benefit and pleasure from Christianity or do you consider it "the opium of the depressed". Do you just feel its a state or phase of our evolution or a necessary part of your life?

Please find answers to those before criticizing those pastors. they do what they know best. Its simple. When i am tired in church, I sit down. I praise God because I want to not because I have to. I attend church because I want to not because I have to. I have been away from my parents for long periods of time since I hit 17 and have had the time to try going and not going.

I hope you'll find your way back to Christ. enough said. take care of yourself.

donjohano:
@gamine - don't forget to speak in tongues when they tell you! This is also compulsory! grin
While I appreciate the hypocrisy in some christians, I would advice donjohano not to jeopardise his eternity by making jokes that seem harmless. speaking in tongues is not compulsory, I don't. It will come only as a free gift of the Holy Spirit.

[quote author=wanita_s link=topic=185205.msg3097454#msg3097454 date=1226907702]clapping's got nothing to do with worship, abeg,

You might as well tell us singing has nothing to do with worship. Its just a form of worship. We are africans and our music mainly relies on percussion. Clapping during worship predates our acceptance of christianity. its a cultural thing but still you praise God , the way you know how.
TravelRe: Decongesting Lagos: Any Suggestions? by kodewrita(m): 9:58pm On Nov 27, 2008
Well, its very shimple (pardon my ara-oke accent). Give us ara-oke enough businesses to work in and we'll gladly stop dreaming of those good jobs and heavy payouts in lagos. but rest asssured that as long as there's a pay differential between Lagos and Ibadan,Ife,Ilesa, this mobile generation will go where the money is. Thats why at my convocation 90% of the people in my class did not feel really bad cos we knew we would all run into each other somewhere in Lagos. capisce.

The other alternative is for we ara-okes to start businesses that would be so competitive as to turn the exodus in the other direction so to say (thats a big task, we are still trying to stop doctors from running to saudi arabia or US or UK, telling the 2007/2008 set not to rush to lagos to runz KPMG or Accenture or any other high-paying firm is a definite no-no. they wont even acknowledge you.)

If you have the ideas, I have the skillz. Hopefully you have graphical design abilities. We'll simply start with some trial projects and as you assess my speed of delivery among other things, we'll move forward. Don't always expect the projects to flow towards me cos I am interested in making alliances with good people anytime. Especially people willing to work on their own sometimes without being micro-managed. People who do what they say they will do, when they say they'll do it.

As far as programming languages are concerned, I am a polyglot and I have also mastered different IDE tricks for different languages(Dreamweaver,NetBeans,Eclipse,VStudio e.t.c).

I am concluding a desktop project at the moment but should be free in a week after adding finishing touches and Effizy touches grin grin. See you then.

I am currently interested in forming design and development partnerships. i freqeuntly come up with big ideas and I am liberal enough to invest once in a while in IT projects of my own. Leave your emails please. something might come up.

EducationRe: Computer Forensics or Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering? Help a Sister! by kodewrita(m): 1:07am On Jul 05, 2008
@candygal don't choose a career simply because its flashy. I am a fresh computer science graduate and I can tell you I had many girls in my class who were lamenting their wrong choices by the time they got to 300 level while there were other girls who gave us a run for our money (I mean girls who compete with you every step of the way).

Picking mech engine simply because it will make you stand out is a very wrong choice. Pick it if you feel you have the necessary discipline and if you feel it satisfies your future plans. Computer science/engineering is not also a totally good idea too because even though its an interesting and rewaarding field, the output will depend on what you put into it and unlike mech engine where recruiting companies might be willing to accept graduates for on the job teaining, computer firms are looking for finished products (Hotheads and I-started-programming-in-the-cradle-kind-of-guys ).

Either way, it all comes down to what you wanna do. ciao baby. have a good life and keep an open mind. See you at the top.

ever heard of Rich Internet Applications? what you doing seems built for that kind of solution. Two options exist: Ajax or Flex. You can write the backend in PHP. as someone earlier said, the project is simply about process automation. Just think in terms of the processes and associated entities. Go to a company and analyse the workflow and define how far you really want to go.
