scholes0: The first thing any Nigerian immigrant in Canada notices is the sheer dominance of the Yoruba community above the rest.... lol... it isn't even a question there. I have been there and seen it myself.
I think a good reason why that is because Canada specializes in skilled immigration which streamlines the immigration pool a lot, not every tom dick and harry who wants to 'japa' can enter some of these countries just for the sake of it, you have to meet certain eligibility criteria..... Hence the Yorubas always emerge on top since they constitute a good chunk of the best brains in the country. It is the same story in places like Australia. How's it going Scholes0? Thanks for the deep insights on Canada and the distribution of Nigerians there. You are absolutely right about the Yoruba presence in Canada. When I first wrote my views on this thread on the most traveled ethnicities from Nigeria, my mind flashed to the 2019 U.S. Census Bureau report, and the FACT that you had also created an awesome thread on the linguistic distribution in the U.S. with massive official evidence. This is the reason why I inserted your moniker in the post so as to let the other guys see all the evidence on your thread, and desist from their silly confirmation bias! Lol. Thanks for your input here. All the best. |

Don't mind the Moderators of this platform. Most of them need mental check and the remaining manageable ones need to be subjected to psychological personality tests. Even the CEO (Seun Osewa) himself finds solace in Twitter because he has come realize that the misbehaviour of his moderators are beyond his control and he is too much of a weakling...or do I say a simpleton to call them to order.

emmaodet: I do proper medical check-up yearly and will recommend it for nigerians to be doing it.
It is between 30-45k depending on hospital and location.
It is a standard offshore requirement for us and there are accredited hospitals we must use after which we are issued medical certificate. They will do virtually all test including x-ray and EGC. It is good to carry out this test because they detect early medical problems. In 2017, they detected that i had too much fat in my heart through the EGC printout and recommended regular exercises and gym to me which improved in the 2019 reading. If i wasn't doing these tests, probably would have slumped one day and people will term it as village people.
In 2020, i detected glaucoma also which have been using the eye drop. Imaging not carrying out these tests, i would have gone blind one day and it would be termed village people. Deep insights... Thanks for sharing! |

Mrnairalandd: Igbos are not the most travelled people in Nigeria, it’s the Yorubas.
I believed this Igbo propaganda for years while living in Nigeria until i started travelling out of Nigeria.
The Igbos are not even closed to million of Yorubas abroad.
Yorubas are so much abroad that they are now adding Yoruba language to USA, UK, Ireland hospitals leaflets and other patients/visitors’ information boards.
In addition, there are some hospitals in USA where Yorubas restaurants with local cuisines are served.
Guess what! 85% of Nigerian businesses abroad-Europe/America/Canada/Australia except Asia countries (I have not been there) are owned by the Yorubas.
If anybody says anything contrary to this fact, the person is lying.
Another fact, 80% of Nigerians graduating from Europe, North America and Australia Universities are the Yorubas. If you doubt me, ask anyone to forward 2022 University's Graduating students registry to see for yourselves.
One thing i have noticed in recent years is this, Igbos are extremely loud their success even though it’s little compare to the quiet Yorubas who hardly scream about their success. And i think this is the reason why there is a misconception among Nigerians that the Igbos are most travelled people. Nicely put. The Yorubas have always been great travelers and do not make a noise or brag about it. I stated this fact with historical data earlier on this thread yesterday, with info from the U.S. Census Bureau report indicating that in the top-10 U.S. States where Nigerians and Nigerian-Americans are found, in 9 out of 10 of those U.S. States, the Yoruba language is the most spoken in households, followed by Ibo, then Edoid languages. It is only in California that Ibo language came tops, followed by Yoruba, and Edoid languages.
It was the basketball successes of my OG, the legendary 2-time NBA MVP, Hakeem "the Dream" Olajuwon of the Houston Rockets in the 1980s to the 1990s that made Houston, Texas a popular major destination of residence for Nigerian immigrants outside NY, California, etc. These are historic facts. franchasng: You are very wrong.
After Igbos, Edo people are the next Nigerian tribe or people that cherish traveling abroad (mostly Europe), followed by the Yorubas.
So its not about prostitution, Edos have a lot of their men living and working legitimately abroad, I know a handful of them. Mind you, I am not from Edo, I am Igbo but truth must be told as it is always You got the ethnic travel sequence wrong here. I'll give you some historical insights so that facts are NOT distorted. When I first flew on board a Nigeria Airways Airbus A310 to the beautiful French-speaking city of Abidjan in 1987, I was stunned to realize that there were many big-time Yoruba business people doing all kinds of businesses in Cote D'Ivoire, and the Yorubas from recent official records are about 90% of the over 2.8 million Nigerians in that country. The Yorubas who are over 50 million worldwide have been into long-distance trading since the time of the great Oyo Empire (which extended up to parts of Togo) and the trade with the great Ashanti Empire, and even as far as Mali. Yorubas from accurate historical data are heavy travelers and dominate the Nigerian Diaspora communities in the UK, USA, Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Sierra Leone, UAE, Turkey. I don't know about the Canada figures yet though. [Also a strong Yoruba descendant community exists in Bahia in Brazil, Havana in Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Colombia, where the Yoruba religion, language and culture exists right from the late 1700s to the 1800s].NOTE: The U.S. Census Bureau in a recent data report indicated that out of the top-10 U.S. States where you find Nigerian-American and Nigerian immigrant population centres, the Yoruba language was the most widely spoken language in households in 9 out of 10 U.S. States, except in California where Ibo language was more spoken in households, followed closely by Yoruba and Edoid languages. After the Yoruba language, Ibo, then Edoid languages come next in that sequence in 9 out of 10 top U.S. States.
Recently, we have seen the rise of many Nigerian-Americans of Yoruba ancestry occupy senior positions in the U.S. Government and politics, such as Wale Adeyemo who is the current U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary, and more. So, this gives us an idea that the U.S. Yoruba population is huge like in the UK, and if you head on to the NL profile of => Scholes0 who created a thread on this U.S. Census Bureau report of 2019 on language distribution in the U.S., it tore to shreds the FALSE claims being propagated online and offline by some Ibos that they are the largest in the U.S. Caution has to be taken NOT to engage in spurious guess work until full facts are officially established! In the Far East like China, Ibos seem to visit a lot more followed by Yoruba international businessmen and women, students, tourists. I do a lot of international business and leisure travels, so I know these facts. Cheers. |

erico2k2: U are assuming, ask your brother how he transfers money, I have a 1st bank and a GTB and UBA accounts, my 1st bank is even a Diaspora account, I dare not use it reasons. you get official rate of Naira aka CBN rate remittance in Nigeria and charged more for transfer fees, My agents today charged me £50 to transfer £2000 to my 1st bank account rate N930/£. How's it going erico2k2? I'm not assuming. Lol. First off, I'm not saying you are wrong about the use of agents to transfer funds. Right off the bat, I agreed with your original post. All I wanted to do in my post was to emphasize that my younger brother (who lives with his family in England) uses his GTWorld mobile banking app to transfer funds from England and money is instantly credited in the Naira bank account in Nigeria. I'm scheduled to speak to him on phone later tommorow from my base, and ask him for the specifics of how he does his transfers to then appear in the Naira currency. All the best. |

erico2k2: I disagree with you; I can tell you that 95% of Nigerians in the UK do not use Banks to transfer money to their Nigerian bank account. we just pay the Agents here and they remit monies into your Nigerian bank account with their Nigerian bank account. This wont be captured, its a black market thing. My younger bruv lives in England and uses his GTBank UK account to simply transfer funds via e-banking into folks and associates bank accounts in Nigeria for instance. No agents used. |
Business › Re: International Remittances To Nigeria By State/Household - Statisense by Konquest: 3:05pm On Dec 17, 2022 |
franchasng: Most Southeast guys don't send money directly to their parents or relatives in Nigeria, they sell the hard currencies to their Igbo friends and relatives into importation and they use it to pay for goods abroad instead of sending directly, so most Igbo Diaspora remittances return back to Nigeria as goods...while the importers send naira to their relatives. This is one major reason FOREX outflow restriction by CBN under Buhari govt. didn't affect Igbo importers and other Nigerian importers who know how to connect to Igbos abroad.
Lastly, a lot of Igbo guys abroad are dissatisfied with Nigeria's current situation under APC/Buhari and many have stopped investing back home, another reason for low remittance from Igbos abroad.
The whole world know that Igbos make up the highest population of Nigerians living abroad, even in strange countries you have never heard before except maybe online lol, you too know this. |

RockHard: Omo. Every SW state featured in the top 10 sha (na dem occupy 60% of the list). Was expecting the SE states to dominate the list though, considering the perception about being the 'most travelled' and all that. Edo na worthy mention. This list don demystify some preconceived notions. Respect to Nigerians overseas wey no forget the homeland. Edo folks are travellers and business people. Back in the 1980s, I remember that Edo guys imported or brought in cars from Belgium for resale in significant numbers.
That was how the term Belgium cars became part of the lingo, just like the Yoruba name "tokunbo" also became part of the lingo for imported cars back in the 1980s as well after Babangida and his team introduced the brutal SAP. Nigerians started fleeing abroad more after SAP was introduced. The Yorubas have always been great travellers and they have a large Diaspora of professionals, businessmen and women, import and export trading communities along the West Coast of Africa for centuries, such as in Cote D'Ivoire (Osun, Kwara, and Oyo Yorubas dominate here), Ghana, Benin, Togo, Senegal, Gambia, Sierra Leone, etc), then various Asian countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, U.S.A, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Turkey, Greece.
So, the top-10 representation is near-accurate. |

WannaHowzit: SA Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has urged the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) to reconsider its decision to ban preaching, singing and hawkers on its new fleet of trains.
Mbalula was speaking during the launch of the Naledi (in Soweto) to Johannesburg corridor that will transport many Sowetans to and from town.
"I don't think it is right. Stop alcohol (sales). Deal with cleanliness on the train. No smoking. We eat inside planes, and some people clean after us. Why don't we want people to eat on the train?" Mbalula asked while seated in a carriage," he said.
Hawking in trains
"They must allow hawkers inside trains. They (hawkers) buy tickets too. I understand your plans to keep trains clean. Hence, after the train stops, they must clean the trains. That is job creation. Get people to clean trains," he added.
"Get people to continue selling in trains, except for alcohol. Don't allow smoking. Kill bad habits. Get business going. These are trains of the working class. Look, I am thirsty and can't buy a soft drink here," he said.
"Leave hawkers alone. I used to be a hawker selling peanuts. Hawkers are guaranteed to earn a living by selling in trains. You have guards to arrest them if they commit criminality.
Preaching in trains
"You say you don't want churchgoers. They are harmless. They are like people who smoke dagga, except those who mix dagga with drugs. They don't commit any offence. Don't stop that. By stopping them, (these trains) won't be trains for the people. They would be for the elites," said Mbalula.
Earlier, while speaking at Park Station in the Johannesburg city centre, the minister said people should be allowed to "sing in trains".
Prasa previously said it had established that trading on trains was compromising the standard of its services.
It said it would find alternative ways of accommodating hawkers. The SA Minister of Transport is trying to sound populist here. Pure sentiments. Prasa simply wants orderliness not disorderliness on board those trains. SA folks should buy what they need before the trains leave the stations. Period. |

adamusuleiman1: U.S. President Joe Biden capped a summit of 50 African leaders by stressing his administration's deep commitment to Africa, urging the continent's leaders to respect the will of their people, and saying he may come visit.
The U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit concluded Thursday with bonhomie, $55 billion in U.S. commitments, and this from Biden:
Analysts say the U.S. is trying to work with a range of African partners — regardless of their track records — on issues where they can find common ground.
"I think what Washington is trying to do is diversify its relationships on the continent and not make them dependent on any one leader or any one group of countries because what we have seen is these countries remain fragile and a strategic partner today could be engulfed in civil war tomorrow," said Cameron Hudson, an analyst on African peace, security, and governance at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He spoke to VOA via Zoom.
Biden also invited the leaders of Congo, Gabon, Liberia, Madagascar, Nigeria and Sierra Leone to a private meeting on Wednesday, where they discussed their upcoming elections during what the White House says is a "critical time for democracy globally."
Publicly, Biden affirmed support for more African representation at the G-20 and the U.N. Security Council — while also not ignoring leaders' shortfalls.
"As leaders, our people inspire us," he said. "They awaken us to possibilities that are within our grasp. There are so many possibilities if we work together. They tell us hard truths that we need to hear. And sometimes we have trouble listening. They challenge us to live up to the values enshrined in so many of our founding documents and to be worthy of the responsibility given to us by that sacred trust."

opeyy: Please be patient with these things, all will fall in place in time. Usually, after 6 months with your mainstream bank, they will let you have their lowest (high interest) credit card. This is the case with NatWest, if you use them as your main bank account, i.e you salary and bills in and out of the account. I know barclaycard will also give you their foundation credit card after you have maintained a main bank account for 6-12m.
Your bank account also helps with your credit record so you don't necessarily need to rush to get a credit card. Take your time please because credit searches also have a negative effect on your record.
In the meantime, you can register on the electoral roll because you're from a commonwealth country, just search electoral register on google and use the gov.uk link. |
