Career › Re: What She Said: I Was Ambitious Out Of Spite For My Classmates by Konquest: 1:36am On Jul 19, 2021
BigCabal:
The subject of today’s What-She-Said is a 22-year-old woman who was ambitious out of spite for her primary school classmates. She talks about her brother wanting to kill her when they were both children, being bullied in primary school and finally finding community with herself this year.

What’s your earliest memory of your childhood?

It has to be of my brother hitting me on the head with a hammer. I had to get stitches, and I still have the scar.

According to my mum, he’s hated me since the day they brought my twin sister and I back from the hospital. That day, he put us in a mortar and wanted to pound us.

WHAT…

In his defence, he was just four and an only child. I love my siblings, and I think I most especially like that, unlike friends, your siblings are obligated to love you. Friends require a constant level of performance while siblings have seen you at your absolute worst and best, so you don’t feel the need to hide anything. You can experience your full range of emotions.

That doesn’t mean we don’t fight. We fought a lot in the house, and it was over stupid things like the TV remote.

Was there any part of your childhood not filled with physical violence?

LMAO. I want to say primary school, but that’s because the violence was emotional.

My parents sent us to a primary school filled with rich people though we were lower middle class. Now, I can say I’m grateful for the experience because I learnt to love reading and conceptualise things, but the experience was awful.

We didn’t have a lot of the things the other children had or drivers to pick us up from school. My brother handled this better because boys didn’t care about those things, but it was hard for my sister and I.

When I was leaving the school, I promised myself I was going to be very successful. That was the only way I could punish them for what they did.

That’s very Nollywood of you.

Yes actually, but I wanted them to look back and feel bad for the way they treated me, and it’s quite ridiculous when I think about it now. I was fuelled by spite.

How did you plan on making them regret it?

Well, I knew I wasn’t really book smart. I had my moments, but you couldn’t really call me intelligent. Education-wise, all my siblings are smarter than me. Learning was never easy for me, so my ambition never extended to school.

My secondary school experience was vastly different. I went to a military secondary school. The funny thing was that they thought my siblings and I were snobs because of the kind of primary school we came from.

In my secondary school, they did this thing where they called out the top five in every class and gave them prizes, then called out the bottom five and caned them. That year, I read so much that I was fourth. After they gave me my prize, the headmistress called out my twin sister and bullied her because I was in the top five and she wasn’t. I was so sad and decided I didn’t want that on my conscience. I stopped trying. This led to me getting C’s and D’s, but I’m grateful I realised my status as an average student early.

Since school wasn’t it for you, what did you do?

When I finished WAEC, my result was seized. They never gave any serious reason why and my parents had to get a lawyer. When they eventually got the result, math was missing. That meant I had to do A-level exams in an Education advancement centre in Ibadan, where we lived. My twin sister luckily did not have the problem I did, so she got into Unilag. When she got to Lagos, she joined a book club.

I decided that she could not have all the fun. I wanted my own book club as well. So I reached out to some of my friends, and we decided to start our own book club. Most of our meetings were online, but eventually, we had to have some physical meetings. Hosting came with paying for snacks, venues, and other things. I never asked anyone for contributions because felt it would be a burden.

I had some money saved from a really well paying gig I got. Plus, my parents gave me money. Honestly, I am shocked I was able to pay for it all. The book club was important to me,. We had a branch in Sierra Leone and another in Ghana. It will always have a very special place in my heart.

Wow. That’s a big deal. Why did you stop?

Well, I had a lot of things going on. Unfortunately, I do the thing where I take on too many projects at once, to the point where I end up overexerting myself. I was volunteering in at least four organisations while still doing school work and also the book club.

I just didn’t know how to not keep busy. Whenever people mention projects around me, I jump on and help make plans for them. It is just how I am. Most of the projects I joined was as a result of a feminist group chat I was in. People kept creating things and asking for help, and I just volunteered.

What did you define as success?

A year ago, success to me was getting into fellowships and impacting people’s lives. It was a very self-serving thing for me. I wanted to rack up awards and be validated by people. I wanted people to think I was smart and brilliant and so many other things. Unfortunately, I didn’t get all the things I wanted.

I feel like everything has led me to this moment. If I had gotten the fellowship and everything else I wanted, I wouldn’t be this clearheaded. I am still going to apply for grants and fellowships, but now I have a clearer picture of what I want. It is not out of spite or about being successful. It will be more about doing things that make me happy.

I have decided to never take on more than three projects at once. When you do many things at once, it’s very easy for you to live on autopilot. You don’t really think about what you do, you just do. I want to be able to savour the moment.

Now that your idea of success has changed, what next?

Ambition meant I never had enough time to just sit with myself and figure out where I am and where I am going. That’s what I dedicated this year to do. To just find community with myself.

I am moving into my own apartment this week, and after I get the article I am working on published, I won’t write for a long time. I want to spend my 20s reading books and focusing on finishing school.

psychologist:
First Time music was heard in Nigeria from a recorder.. This is Lagos 1895
@psychologist
What is your source or Web link
of this 1895 picture scene?

Lagos (Island) folks and Yorubas
did NOT move about n.aked or half-n.aked in 1895 as can be
seen in the pic above.

Since the early 1980s, I've seen a
lot of archival pictures of Yorubas (and non-Yorubas) taken in the
1800s by the British, and Yorubas wore cloths such as agbadas on kembes (three quarter trousers) while the Yoruba women only used woven cotton wrappers round
their waists and breasts.

Most wore no shoes though... but there was extensive cotton weaving using looms in Yorubaland that English explorers who came to Yorubaland in the 1700s said the fabric woven was stronger than Manchester clothing!

The 1800s to early 1900s pictures show that Ijaws, Ibos (wore no cloths but only covered the lower private parts with a tiny animal skin, and Ibo women of all ages
did NOT cover their breasts), and
the Binis (The Bini Obas and ranking chiefs wore cloths but
the lower class traditionally where forbiden by law to not wear
cloths).

All these are in history books
and the Nigerian and British archives.

If all you said above is true, then in your best interest, I'll advice you leave that lady. Please you deserve happiness in your life! Don't compromise and take foolish risks you will certainly and obviously regret in the future. First, the fact that she said she's only slept with two men doesn't even look like its true then lesbian porn? Maka why? Oga you will one day have children I believe, and the best you can give them is a decent mother please. Don't allow pressure from her family make you take foolish steps towards your future. I won't even be surprised they're aware of all her behaviours, forget the drama they're putting up before you!
And see you saying you've started smoking, something you don't do before. Don't you see your future doesn't look like what will bring peace to you with that lady? You won't even be able to travel and have peace, you won't only be thinking of the fact that your woman could be cheating, you'll then be wondering if she's cheating on you with a man or woman. Is that how much you hate your own future and peace?
Imagine you one day get to see your wife on the bed with another man, worse still another woman? Or maybe not even you, your daughter gets to see that. Isn't that the start of a crack in their own mentality about sexuality too? Please apologise to her family, tell them about the whole development, the lesbian thing and let her go. Like I stated earlier, YOU DESERVE TO BE HAPPY. Of course except you think otherwise!
Awesome. Well said!

There's a saying " people perish for lack of understanding or knowledge".
That's what you get when You board a plane from Nigeria and land your ass in London.
What happened to Manchester, Newcastle and other cities huhhuhhuh?
I've been to the uk and am talking from experience.
I've met so many Nigerians who summoned courage to leave London and settle in other cities in the uk and are making more money while paying very little for rent .
I stayed in Sunderland And visited friends in Newcastle and Bradford. These guys (students)do part time jobs , pay their tuition fees and accommodation themselves and still send money home while some folks work their ass off and end up spending their money alone on rents in London.
If you want to make it in the UK please stay away from London. It has been messed up my ur fellow country men that's why the police stops and ask you for documents . They don't try that shit* anywhere in the uk except London.
Also, living in the uk as an illegal immigrant is something you wouldn't want to do because you won't be able to do anything with your life.
As for the taxi matter, I and a friend paid £50 from heathrow to our hotel the last time I visited there. And who says that guy can't make £300 (90,000 naira) everyday. FYI , he owns the car. So while some ppl rant about staying in naija and drinking garri just like I read earlier when you havent traveled and seen things first hand is absolutely your choice, because it's a case of "who no go, no know". You don't judge by the posts & comments you read here. Do your research. Lastly, You'll enjoy your stay in diaspora if you live there legally.
My 2 cents.
Word. Obviously London is
more expensive than locations outside London - such as
Manchester and more.

Isn't it the same story with Nigerians living in the US? You mean all those Nigerian cab drivers all over New York City just have naij accent but they aren't Nigerians, no? All those Nigerians on canal street aren't Nigerians? The ones all over Brooklyn who look like they just left the boat aren't Nigerians?

When did the population of Nigerians in the UK get to 2million where there aren't even 2million black Africans in the UK? A lot of you just get gassed off London and start throwing millions around. I doubt there are up to 500,000 Nigerians even in London where 80% of Nigerians in the UK live.

As soon as I saw Peckham in North London - I knew this clown has no clue about what he is saying. Peckham is in South London. And statistically there should be more Nigerians around Thamesmead/Bexley and Thurrock axis (maybe Havering) than Peckham today. It changed time ago but a lot of Nigerians still come to Peckham to shop tho.

Anyway, the hustle is real.
Yeah! 80% of folks of Nigerian descent live in London.
Travel › Re: NIGERIANS IN LONDON The Never Told Stories by Konquest: 12:22pm On Jul 18, 2021
Shymm3x:
Lol. They don't ask folks to "show your papers" in the UK. The UKBA thing you sound on YouTube is something they just do randomly from time to time, just like they do in the US with Mexicans - nothing serious. The only difference is that black people aren't more than 3% of the UK's population, unlike US where AAs make up about 13% and it's easier to differentiate a black person from the UK from an immigrant, by just the way folks dress and mannerism - without even hearing them speak. Hence during the random checks (only in isolated cases), they tend to spot immigrants easily. And folks don't even get deported like that from the UK (The EU laws protect most people) - they just keep them in detention camps and allow them to seek asylum...and after a while the overwhelming majority of them always get released.

Also, whatever the OP wrote up there is the same for all Nigerians living in foreign countries not just the UK. A lot of Nigerians just like picking on the UK for reasons I'll never understand.

- Cab drivers: I'd even wager that there are more Nigerian cab drivers in the US (based on what I know and I've seen) than in the UK. I've never seen a Nigerian black cab driver, or even a proper cab company owned by a Nigerian in the UK - apart from a few part time private hire here and there, and those who do the airport cabbie. But in the US - there are loads of yellow cab drivers in New York City that are Nigerians. And that's just New York alone.

- Nurses and care workers: it's the same everywhere, from UK, to US, to Canada, to Australia. These countries need people in that field - and a lot of Nigerian immigrants, especially females work there. Big deal?

- Security: it's the same everywhere.

The problem is that these folks won't focus on the tons of Nigerian professionals/academics and gazillion of Nigerian business thriving in the UK. I don't think there's any Nigerian diaspora community with more thriving businesses than we've in the UK. Nigerians are everywhere.

Don't even get me started on the young Nigerians doing big things in the UK - making that pounds sterling and living large.

These folks just hate the UK. grin

whizqueen:
My friend sent me this thread last night but I had too much to say so here we go.

I (A Nigerian girl living in Canada) will be responding to the OP's points and some other comments I found on the thread.

Are Nigerian Ladies in Canada lonely? Ofcourse we are! Are Nigerian girls in NIGERIA lonely? Hell yeah!!! Are Nigerian girls in other countries lonely? Absolutely!!!!! Being lonely is not a factor of location or person. It's about not finding the right friends/partner you vibe with.

Why did we immigrate? Bros are you kidding me? Canadian govt is paying me $2000 monthly and other benefits for losing income due to covid-19 Is that happening in Naija right now? All the money donated by philanthropist in Nigeria would soon disappear into the thin air without our govt giving explanation of any sort. Ofcourse, it's not bed of roses abroad neither were we expecting a man wrapped in a gift bag but please don't let your sentiments cloud your reasoning as to why people make immigration decisions abeg.

I personally feel attacked cry grin I recently posted a video on my YouTube Channel about finding love & online dating in Canada. It's asif this hope saw my video and wanted to attack me

What makes you think we would be interested in you to begin with? Don't pride yourself too much plis dear

If you like let the OP influence your decision and stop you from chasing your immigration dreams, last last it's up to you to decide what you want for your future.

Whilst I would agree with growing together with your partner and building with them. I think it's just shallow minded of anyone in this age and time to ask for women to chase marriage first before career. Marriage is not the ultimate not everyone sees marriage as an achievement. These days, if you crave for sex so much, you can pay someone to do it or get yourself a Love Machine, if you want a child, you can literally just buy a sperm and save yourself lots of stress. Most of us are yet to keep an open mind to these things, however if you want something badly there;s always a way to get it.

Most Nigerian men hate to see it happen, there are laws that protect women here and they would prefer dying single than to see women as their equals. A good number of them are control freaks and would rather their woman be at their beck and call for everything as opposed to having their marriage work as a partnership. Nigerian married man knowing the laws of the land will still go ahead and cheat on his wife with a girl living in the same condo with his wife. Una no even dey fear or respect una madam. If atall you really want to cheat, you cannot travel to Nigeria and secretly mess with girls that fancy IJGB crew or allen avenue. As expected, some women do exploit the situation but if you find yourself a god-fearing person and you do the right thing, no divorce laws or child custody issue would stop y'all from flourishing.

White men dont find us attractive? Laughs is Swahili
On the contrary most men of other races have FETISH for Nigerian girls and Black girls in general. Maybe not long term in all cases tho but they reaaaaaaally fancy us and admire our enthusiasm towards life. Whilst most Nigerian girls would likely not wanna go for the likes of 'Ryan', 'Billy' and co it's not cos we don't find them attractive. Firstly, Naija guys are smart, intelligent and goal oriented. You see the average ones already have plans for their future and working towards it unlike the counterparts who are comfortable with just a high school degree. If a Naija guy is even into technical jobs he would try to be the best at it and work towards starting his own company in the near future. Secondly, coping with someone with a different culture, lifestyle, food, etc is honestly stressful. I was talking with one Persian guy and he said before we can kiss or hold hands, we have to be temporarily married. undecided The other chinese guy is only about 5ft tall, I'm just wondering what he would look like in that department shocked

In Nigeria, when you visit a guy at home, some would expect you to know that's express ticket to get laid with them. But here if you visit a guy at home, you can be almost certain that if you guys have sex it's cos you wanted it, no guy will try to lure or manipulate you to straff them or tell you when you came to my house what were you thinking. They know it's important to ask for your opinion or even avoid the whole situation altogether.

Something the OP failed to address is that the Loneliness spans across both men and women living in Diaspora. Even the white people find it hard getting a partner for themselves much less an immigrant that would probably take some time to fully settle in. The system is built to have everyone mind their business, that togetherness or family-spirit is missing.

All the naija guys and ladies in Toronto have finish dating themselves. It's such a small city, everyone knows eachother thru another person only a matter of time before you find out that; the guy toasting you is ex with your colleagues' friend. Or the guy you matched with on the dating app went on a date with your housemate the day before. Some would be married and they would be on the dating apps lying to other women.

Some of us don't even mind going back home to bring men here, but 'em guys just they find paper. Only few genuinely love and care for you. I kuku know people here already do that as business tho, some ladies/guys now charge up to $30,000 to marry people from home to help them get residency here.

There are tons of Nigerians in Canada groups on WhatsApp and Telegram some are just for singles and you find people of age 35, 40, etc filled with both women and MEN. Some guys eventually resort to going back home to marry the less exposed girls, but guess what happens once they reach YYZ airport? Oh well your guess is as good as mine. Their eyes go open finish.

A good number of Naija guys are single and desperately finding love as well as ladies. Truth is, we all crave for love. And that's not a bad thing to want. Finding a good match or significant other is a honestly a game of chance. Home and Abroad, White or Black race finding a partner is truly difficult and if you got lucky finding that one special person, you better love and cherish them truly.

I rest my case; I am in the comment section waiting for someone to jump on my mention and before you do so just remember: Opinions are like as5holes and everyone is entitled to one. So this is my opinion, I have free time today grin

@Whizqueen
You have an insightful post here.
Just getting to read your post and watch your video since I first saw this thread a few months back.

grin @"I feel personally attacked"
got me cracking up.

The hungry men who sell their sperms for use by single women are a huge disgrace to the us men.
Can you just imagine the audacity!

The kids (especially the boys)
born through such sperm sales arrangements would want to
know who their real fathers
are in the future. Guys always
want to know who their real biological fathers are... Not
knowing would lead to tensions.
What if in the future the kids
grow up and end up unknowingly fathering babies with their step-siblings?

Aha! So white men have a FETISH
for women of African descent
according to your post? LOL
I can't believe you wrote that
word called "fetish." shocked wink

Well it is just a "fetish or fantasy!"
A lot of them just wanna "straff" (i.e., have sex) without marriage commitment and then end up dating and marrying their own white women due to cultural
differences.

Of course there have been a couple of marriages involving white men
and Nigerian women that lasted longer - some of which I personally know. But then the best bet for y'all ladies to get a man whose ready for commitment is to widen the search back to Nigeria for legit guys, and also within the religious and Diasporan socio-cultural clubs
and ethnic associations, etc.
Dating before getting married
should not exceed 2 years because guys start losing interest if dating goes on for far longer.

Last but not least, I do agree with you that loneliness can occur across a broad spectrum of
ethnic and cultural classes in
Nigeria and the Diaspora. The
fact still remains that the men
get married more easily than
the women because the pool of men (who want to settle down) is smaller for immigrant women of
African descent in let's say
Canada or the U.S. (especially in small towns and less culturally diverse cities).

gargoylern:
I visit Canada and the US from time to time, but on this my last trip I could not but observe just how extremely lonely Nigerian girls are there. Why did they immigrate in the first place? What did they expect what waiting for them on the other side? A man gift wrapped in iced sugar?

They all have Youtube channels now, or Instagram channels and release video or vlogs every other day. I guess it is the easiest way to stop themselves from going crazy over the dreary loneliness.

But the problem doesn't even stop there. Normally, I would have been interested sef. But many of them are actually not so good-looking or resourceful. Too bad!

If you are a Nigerian girl thinking of immigrating to Canada, make sure you consider it hard and deep. You could end up being just as lonely and dejected. Am not kidding when I say this. If you aren't there, you have no idea how tough it can get.

While some Nigerians are waiting for the government to provide them with jobs, a hardworking and beautiful lady, Ogochukwu Maduako who ventured into Agriculture - has revealed how interesting it has been for her. The graduate of Abia State University and egg recycler shared her story online through FarmerBoy.

Read below;

Hello My Name is Ogochukwu Maduako, I am a Farmer and a recycler. I recycle eggshells which is (poultry by product) into Bio material called CALCIUM. I am a graduate of Abia State University Uturu, where I obtained Bachelor of Science (B.SC) in Agricultural Economics & Extension and currently am closing out on my Masters in International Economics & Finance at the department of Agriculture in Rivers State University.

Eggshells are gotten from the consumption of poultry by-product called EGG.

Eggshells are great source of calcium, when recycled into powdered form can be used as a planting materials as a natural fertilizer for the soil, it is a good calcium supplement for snail and also poultry layers for good formation of their shells. It is essential for the strawberry, bell pepper, watermelon etc farmers. Interestingly, it is consumed by Humans as well.Practicing Agriculture as a female is fun. it stands me out where ever i go. it gives me the edge to be known and noticed most especially the fact that i recycle what people see as waste.

The journey so far has been quite interesting. As we all know destiny comes in pieces. So we are trying to bring all of its pieces together.Major challenges; It's really not easy trying to sell a new idea to the market that are used to an old existing idea. You need a whole lot of conviction but most of all you have to be very grounded with the knowledge of what you are trying to sell.

Advice to youths; if what you want doesn’t exist, create it. In 2-3 years, I see @ifarm go global because recycling of eggshells is not just a challenge we face here in Nigeria but rather it is a challenge faced by other countries on its disposal technique.

Sufferingboy:
The greatest mistake of Igbos is they are very arrogant(Know it all mentality).

I have been saying it here for long,Igbos should learn to carry others along and seek alliance. They should learn to be humble.

As powerful as tompolo,he know his boundary,He will never come out and start spreading propaganda against other southern tribe or insulting them.Tompolo may not be highly educated, but he is smart to respect other oil producing tribe.

When Gen Irabor was appointed as CDS,Kanu and his followers started spreading propaganda about him and we young Ikas were watching with keen interest.

Life no be about chestbeating and been loud mouthed like Igbos do.If you want to fight NIG government you need aliance, not blackmailing snd insulting other southern tribe who did not wrong you.Igbos learn to strategise and make friends in southern Nigeria not enemies.

Learn to respect other people decision.

Make your comment abeg.Igbos are not really wise, they just loud mouthed.

RedboneSmith:
I don't know if there is a free copy of the book online yet. I got mine on Amazon. I think it is already fairly well-known that before the pre-eminence of Ife, various Yoruba groups were already established in their areas.

Ogundiran mentions a few areas with fairly advanced state societies before Ife became eminent. There was the large Òba polity, which is thought to have made the Esie figures. There was the Idoko polity in the present Ijebu area, and two other polities Ogundiran referred to as Ulale and Ulesun in the present Ekiti and Owo areas respectively.
@RedboneSmith

Word!

Thanks for the feedback and also giving the specifics/emphasis on the autochtonous communities that existed centuries back in Yorubaland (pre-Oduduwa Dynasty).

There's a latest device called the "ground-penetrating radar" that is used by archaeologists for scanning beneath the ground for buried objects or human remains from centuries back. This great device will revolutionize archaeology in Yorubaland and even Africa as a whole.

All the best.

P.S. Your name "Redbone" Smith sounds like that of a pre-1900 Native-American warrior chief name.

Sitting Bull and Standing Bull were some of the iconic Native-American chiefs in the 1800s
who resisted white American domination in their Native-American homelands.
