The Eze N’digbo (traditional rulers) and leaders of Igbo socio-cultural associations in the North have vowed to resist any attempt by the Coalition of Northern Groups to chase them out of the region.
The coalition groups are: Arewa Citizens Action for Change, led by Nastura Ashir Sharif; Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, led by Shettima Yerima; Arewa Youth Development Foundation, led by Aminu Adam; and the Arewa Students Forum, led by Alfred Solomon.
Others are, Northern Emancipation Network, led by Abdul-azeez Suleiman; Northern Youth Vanguard, led by Joshua Viashman; Northern Youth Stakeholders Forum, led by Mohammad Mohammad; North-East Assembly, led by Mohammed Tasiupantami; and North Central People’s Front, led by Nathaniel Ajegenaadigizi.
Concerned by the outrage that greeted the declaration, Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, and the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, ordered the arrest of the signatories to the declaration, but none of the youths has been apprehended as of Saturday.
The tension generated by the declaration of the northern youths worsened on Friday afternoon, when a prominent member of the Northern Elders’ Forum, and former Ahmadu Bello University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, threw his weight behind the coalition.
The group of northern elders also expressed “disappointment” with the Northern Governors’ Forum for disowning the coalition, insisting that it was hypocritical for the Igbo to continue to live in other parts of the country while agitating for Nigeria’s breakup.
Speaking with one of our correspondents, the Eze Ndigbo of Kano, Boniface Ibekwe, said the over three million Igbo indigenes in Kano would not leave the city with all their investments acquired over several decades.
He said, “We have advised our people to remain calm and that nobody should travel. The lives and property Igbo are secure. As far as I am concerned, no Igbo man has relocated with his family to the East. We are here and going about our normal business. The northern groups fanning the embers of war have never experienced the pains and after-effects of war because, if they had, they would always pray for the sustenance of peace, unity and stability.’’
Also, the Eze Ndigbo of Kaduna, Igwe Sylvanus Aneke, told one of our correspondents that his people were not afraid of the plans of the Arewa youths, especially when the Federal Government had stepped into the matter.
He said, “The youths have asked us to leave, but their parents, the police, the state government and the Federal Government have asked us to ignore the threat. We will rather listen to the elders and the government.
“Ango Abdullahi merely expressed his opinion. We are not taking him seriously because we are used to his antics. We are watching the events for now. We will take our decisions after we have watched, prayed and discovered that nothing has changed.”
The President General of the Igbo Community Welfare Association in Kaduna State, Chris Nnoli, also urged Igbo in the North to stay still.
He said, “It (the ultimatum) is a serious issue that should naturally be taken seriously. We are concerned, but since the Kaduna State Government has assured us of safety, we want to hold on to this assurance. I am greatly worried that up till this moment, nobody has been apprehended over the issue. We are watching events and we believe that government will intensify action and get the youths arrested. It is when we have seen that the government and the IG’s assurances are not effective that we will start to think of other means of seeking protection.”
The Eze Igbo III, Jos South in Plateau State, Lawrence Onwudinjo, who is also the President, Igbo Cultural Association, said no Igbo person would leave the North on account of any threat from any northern youth.
He said, “Igbo people in Plateau State are going nowhere. There is no right-thinking human being that will ask people to leave where they are living. This is one Nigeria where we are living. Nigeria belongs to all of us. I believe that if any part of the country needs anything, they should sit down together to discuss it. Everybody should come to a roundtable to discuss it.”
Another Igbo leader in Lantang, James Abraham, said no Igbo would relocate and that if they would have to move, northerners in the South-East should be waiting for their quit notice too.
He said, “If the Arewa youths tell us to leave the North, their kinsmen in the South-East should also be ready to leave. Do the Arewa youths have representatives in Plateau State? They should not be taken seriously.”
The President General of the Igbo community in Sokoto, Onyebuchi Uwaga, told SUNDAY PUNCH that, following the assurance from the government and the police, no Igbo would leave the North.
Also, the Ezeigbo I of Nasarawa State, Nathaniel Nduba, in calling for the immediate arrest of the Arewa youths in the interest of peace, pointed out that no Igbo person would leave the region, despite the threat given by the northern coalition.
A yam seller in Nasarawa, Mrs. Amaka Chukwudi, also said, “The threat by the AYCF was an empty threat. They forget that they have their brothers and sisters spread across other states. Has anybody asked them to leave? Why should the northerners give such an ultimatum?”
Igbo in Bauchi State, in reaction to the ultimatum, also stated that they would not leave the North.
One of them, Joshua Chukwu, said, ‘’For me, I will not take laws into my hands but will remain law-abiding, as the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees everyone, irrespective of tribe or origin, the right to reside in whatever part of the country he deems fit to pursue his legitimate business.”
Similarly, Igbo in Niger State told SUNDAY PUNCH that they would ignore the threat and carry on with their legitimate activities without exercising any fear.
A businessman, Tochukwu Chikwem, said he had no plans to send his family back to the East.
Another Igbo man in Minna, Felix Irojiogu, said, “They are seeking recognition or attention which they don’t deserve. They are wasting their time; government should arrest them for trying to cause problem in the country.”
In Katsina State, the mood of defiance was also noticed when a businessman, Jude Eze, said, “How can I listen to the rantings of those rascals? You should know they don’t know the consequences of what they are saying. It took our leaders and elders years of sweat, and some even paid with their lives, to get Nigeria to this stage and some boys who have never gone beyond their villages are saying we should pack our belongings and go. We are not going anywhere.”
Meanwhile, Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, has assured non-indigenes in the state of their safety.
But in Sokoto State, some Igbo men have made up their minds to leave, stressing that anyone who ignores the Arewa youths’ threat would do so at his peril.
One of them, Uchendu Sunday, a father of three, who operates a patent medicine store at Mabera, in Sokoto, said, “I grew up in Kano. Sadly, my elder brother was killed there during a violent demonstration against the United States of America, when Osama bin Laden was declared wanted in 2001, after the bombing of the World Trade Centre.
“It was this sad memory that haunted me out of Kano to Sokoto. This is why I have decided to end my sojourn in the North and return to the East with my wife and three children. One thing I can assure you is that there will be an exodus of Igbo from the North, based on this ultimatum.”
In the East, various groups and associations said they had no intention of issuing a similar ultimatum to northerners living among them.
Speaking for Igbo youths, the President of Ohanaeze Youth Council, the youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said, “We will not ask northerners to leave. We will continue to show them love, as Igbo have done in the past.”
Reacting to the ultimatum, the leader of the northern community in Enugu State, Sarkin Hausawa, Idris Ado Suleiman, stated that they exercised no fear of any tit-for-tat response by their eastern hosts.
Suleiman said, “We have heard about the ultimatum. They said Igbo in the North should leave in three months. But we know it is not something that is possible.”
Osinbajo sues for peace
Acting President Prof Yemi Osinbajo on Saturday called on the various ethnic groups in Nigeria to live in peace, saying that in any marriage, there was tendency for disagreement.
Osinbajo spoke at the wedding of the daughter of the founding National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bisi Akande, Wuraola, and Dr. Olawale Solabi in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The Acting President’s message came on the heels of an ultimatum issued by Arewa youth wings to Igbo people living in northern Nigeria.
Osinbajo said it was common for nations with different ethnic nationalities to experience quarrels among themselves like in any marriage.
According to him, agitations and quarrels can best be addressed when people give peace a chance and work in unity.
Osinbajo said, instead of fanning the embers of disagreement within ethnic groups, it would be better if understanding was allowed to prevail.
He said, “Marriage is a very large institution that requires a lot of prayers. It is the same marriage that nations go through. Our nation has been in marriage for a while now.
“Sometimes, there are quarrels within that marriage. Sometimes, there is disagreement. What is important is that you must remain together. You must remain united.”
Among dignitaries at the wedding ceremony were Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State; and Governor Muhammad Badaru of Jigawa State.
An ex-governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola and a former governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni, were also present.
IPOB backs quit notice for Igbo
The Indigenous People of Biafra on Saturday supported the three-month quit notice served on the Igbo living in the northern part of the country by the Arewa youths.
IPOB, in a press statement made available to our correspondent in Awka by the group’s media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful, commended the northern youths and Arewa Elders Forum for fast-tracking the Biafra exit with their pronouncements.
The group maintained that the quit notice had a human face, unlike the situation in the past, when the people perceived as Biafrans were attacked without any notice or provocation.
IPOB said it would prevail on Igbo living in the North to adhere to the quit notice.
The statement read, “Biafrans in general wish to thank these vocal northerners for at least having the courtesy to issue advance warning this time before embarking on their routine massacre of the Igbo and other Biafrans living in northern Nigeria; unlike what their fathers did in 1966.
“We promise to adhere to your warning to leave northern Nigeria because a word is enough for the wise. Biafrans and other southerners should start packing their belongings to come down to the South.
“We also advise the northern youths and their elders to keep it up because all they have done is to exercise their right to free speech which is not a crime under any law known to man.
“We are therefore against those calling for the arrest of these Arewa youths and their elders.”
‘Nigeria can’t afford another civil war’
A former Nigerian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, and a former Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Justice Mustapha Akanbi (retd.), have warned against any attempt to break Nigeria.
They cautioned that such an act could lead to another civil war and warned that Nigeria cannot afford another civil war, leading to another wanton destruction of lives and property.
Gambari spoke during the fifth convocation of Kwara State University in Malete, Moro Local Government of Kwara State, while Akanbi spoke on the sidelines of a summit organised by Home and Street Kids Welfare Initiative in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
PANDEF seeks arrest of Arewa youths
The Pan Niger Delta Forum has condemned the ultimatum issued on the Igbo in the North by some Arewa youth groups.
It described the three-month quit notice as “an act of treason which portends great threat to the nation’s unity.”
PANDEF, led by Ijaw national leader, Chief Edwin Clark, said the group considered the statement by the Arewa youths as “too dangerous.”
The statement, signed by Dr. Alfred Mulade, called on northern state governments, elders, particularly the Arewa Consultative Assembly, in whose House the press conference was held, not only to condemn it but take concrete steps to reassure the Igbo of their safety in the region.
Igbo youths in North call for Ango’s arrest
The Ndigbo in the North, under the aegis of Northern Youth Council of Nigeria on Saturday demanded the arrest of Prof. Ango Abdullahi, the spokesman of the Northern Elders Forum.
Abdullahi had at a press conference on Friday backed the three-month ultimatum by a coalition of Northern group to the N’digbo in the region to vacate the place before October 1, 2017.
The group, at a press conference, by its spokesperson, Isa Abubakar, urged security operatives to immediately arrest the NEF spokesman, following what it described as his hate speech.
Why Urhobo can’t be part of Biafra — Urhobo leaders
Urhobo leaders, under the auspices of Urhobo Leaders of Thought, have condemned the proposed Biafra Republic map which included Urhobo as one its territory.
They maintained that Urhobo people did not share culture or customs with Igbo people in the southern part of the country.
ULT, in a statement by its Secretary-General, Mr Mumakai Unugha, on Saturday, also condemned the recent ultimatum issued to Igbo residents in the northern part of the country, describing it as reckless and provocative.
IYC asks FG to intervene in Arewa — Igbo conflict
The Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide has called on the Federal Government to show strong and purposeful leadership by stopping the building tension between the North and the Igbo .
IYC spokesman, Mr. Henry Iyalla, who spoke in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Saturday, decried the manner in which government was handling the quit order given to Igbo people living in the North.
Iyalla explained that it was necessary for the Muhammadu Buhari-led government to arrest the situation at its preliminary stage and not when it must have escalated.
IGBOS AND NIGERIANS: In their confusion, infusion and frustration arising from pride and over estimation of themselves leading them to a series of saboteur maniac syndromes.
Igbos broadly divided other Nigerians into three broad categories. Those they hate, those they deride and those they fear. Those they hate are the yorubas whom they call traitors, tribalists and cowards. Yet no race in Nigeria have been more tribal than the lbos.
There are historical facts to prove this. If something is ten and igbos are not allowed to take 15, so that the rest of us can share minus 5, lgbos will cry marginalisation and label the rest us tribalists. However there is no race in this country that have been more accommodating of the lgbos than the Yorubas, there is no single igbo leader that did not grow up in the South West or is a beneficiary of Yoruba largesse.
Zik went to CMS GRAMMAR SCHOOL, Adolphus wabara went to AHMADIYA COLLEGE AGEGE, Ken Nnamani went to LOYOLA COLLEGE IBADAN, Ojukwu and Ekwueme went to KINGS COLLEGE, Okpara went to YABA TECH while Phillip Emegwali went to AQUINAS COLLEGE, AKURE. Even my brother Anadu went to IMADE COLLEGE OWO etc All major Igbo politicians cut their political teeth in the West. Their major religious leaders cannot thrive outside the West. Pastor Muoka, Pastor Ezekiel of Four Square and Okonkwo of TREM are examples.
I remember that after the civil WAR, Igbos who came back to ILE IFE were allowed TUITION FREE while the YORUBAS in NSUKKA were rusticated. Example is Pastor Adeboye. Yet lgbos reserve their greatest hatred for the Yorubas for reasons being that the yorubas refused to be dominated by the lbos to confront the North.
As to the label of cowardice, had there been any war between the yorubas and the lbos in which the lbos defeated the Yorubas? In the whole ancestral history of Ndigbo, which war has the forefathers or great forefathers fought? Any empire in their history? Yet the yorubas have worsted the lgbos four times in the political history of Nigeria.
As to the label of treachery, had there been any agreement the yorubas signed with the lbos and they reneged? The answer is no. Yet the yorubas have records of Igbo treachery on the two occasions they formed alliance with them. In 1964 to fight the federal election, the yorubas formed an Alliance called UPGA with the Ibos to be led by Okpara because major Yoruba leaders were in jail. There was an agreement that the election must be boycotted. The Igbos sabotaged it, went and contested election while the West kept to the agreement.
In 1979 the West went into alliance with the lbos and formed PPA - PROGRESSIVE PEOPLE ALLIANCE. Again Igbo sabotaged it so that they can produce Speaker house of Representatives. Who then is traitor? The second category are the Eastern minorities made up of present Rivers, Akwa lbom, Cross Rivers and Bayelsa. The igbos see them as subhuman with tidal brain. Until the creation of Rivers State by Gowon, no OGONI man can sleep on the hospital bed in Bori GENERAL HOSPITAL . As at 1977 only UYO ,PHC and CALABAR had electricity light. They were so underdeveloped by their Igbo overseers that you will think that you were in the Congo jungle.
Until Diette Spiff, there was no Ikwere named Street in Port Harcourt. To show how deep the derision is, the present Biafran agitatators changed the name of RIBISI (Phc) to IGWOCHA as if the IKWERES do not exist.
The third category are the Hausa Fulani. The igbos pretend to hate the Fulanis but the truth is that the Igbo man is subservient to them. Ignore the noise. There are historical facts to justify this. Zik served under BALEWA, EKWUEME served under SHAGARI and EKEREMANDU zoned the PDP presidency to the North because he wants to be the VICE PRESIDENT to a Northerner.
After the civil war and OJUKWU was granted amnesty for his rebellion against constituted authority, he returned to Nigeria and he joined the Hausa fulani party (NPN) of those he accused of genocide against his Igbo people. It is Igbo tragedy that they hate and deride those who grow and sustain them while they cringe to those(the hausas) who kick them like balls. Igbos are the only race in nigeria that celebrate failure.
In 1982, the igbos celebrated the defeat of biafra by welcoming ojukwu with fanfare on his return from asylum haven been granted amnesty by the igbo overlords- the hausa fulani. He revelled in the fanfare and promptly married FFK left over- forgotten the over 3million lgbos that died in the war and with many of them languishing at OJI RIVER CAMP.
The second celebration is the release of kanu with the most humiliating bail conditions ever granted an accused in the annals of Nigerian justice system. A bail conditions targeted at the entire Igbo race and granted by an Hausa Fulani judge.
I could not believe that with all the noise, such bail conditions will be signed. But he signed and in his eagerness to leave kuje he abandoned his two conspirators in kuje. The bail conditions wiped out the Identity of the ibos and EKEREMANDU was made the enforcer of the conditions. FFK is a polemist like Femi ARIBISALA etc. They have the capacity to argue both sides of the same point.
The igbos regard him as their hero just like Ayo fayose the Eze gburugburu the second. I hope very soon the by Igbo will not start blaming fayose as they blamed Awo for everything that went wrong with their prosecution of the biafran war. I rest. #Akin writing from PH.
^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^ OK... Interesting and insightful article.
Dumaknesset: When I say Igbos don't think things through, you would not believe me, so you have not thought about it, yet you want secession.
I am a lawyer and here is a legal dimension.
First note that all lands in Nigeria by virtue of the Land Use Act, 1978 is owned by the state, federal government and local government accordingly. Developed parts are owned by the state through the state governor, the undeveloped parts are owned by the local government, while those areas acquired by federal government are owned by the Federal government.
Individuals and even corporate organizations are mere tenants to the the real owners, the governments! hence, the issuance of cofo, consent, excision, ratifications et al.
Once a property is abandoned as it will be, when the biafrans bolt, the properties will revert to the real owners that is the state government, local government or federal government vide a legal principle called bona vacantia.
Note the legal principle of quic quid plantatur solo solo cedit, he who owes the land owes what is on it, all the developments on the lands become that of the real owner.
All the biafrans properties will become that of Lagos state government, it will be the largest real estate deal in the world since igbos own 90 percent of real estate in Lagos state and Afonjas only own 0.2 percent of real estate in the east.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^ *Modified*
@dumaknesset
Ibos do NOT own 90% of the real estate in Lagos State.
So Yorubas who are the hosts of the Ibo only own 0.2% in their own land? ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~ After reading the post made by @DumaKnesset on page one of this very interesting thread, I realised that he was using SARCASM in his post about the so-called 90% real estate ownership reference and I've retracted my original hard response towards him and offered my apology...
I have to make sure I don't shoot every moving target on NL next time because... it could be a sarcasm...
EdifiedCEO: Following the Kaduna declaration about Igbos leaving their state, a young man has taken bold step by moving out in order for peace to reign. The man was seen carrying suitcases on his head so as to obey the instruction of the North-East Youth Peace Development Initiative (NEYPDI), who gave them an ultimatum of 90 days to vacate the premises.
jaggabban: Urhobo can never be a part of the proposed Biafra Republic, Urhobo Leaders of Thought have stated.
According to them the Urhobo people do not share cultural and socio custom with Igbo people in the southern part of the country.
“We want to make it abundantly clear that the Urhobo is not part and will never be part of Biafra. We urged them to go back to their drawing board to correct the gross error of including Urhobo into their ill-planned republic.
“The Urhobo people with unique cultural identity are not in any way common to that of the Igbos. Above all, the Urhobo nation and the Igbo have no common boundary but brought together by the force of arms by General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida to accept Asaba as State headquarter when he created Delta State.”
ULT said this in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Mr. Mumakai Unugha during the weekend.
The group also condemned the recent quit notice given to Igbo residents in the northern part of the country. It is a reckless and reckless and provocative action, they say.
“It is our humble view that Northern elders including traditional rulers should intervene to avoid escalation. In the same token, elders from the South East should prevail on their own groups to sheath their swords of their constant embarrassment of the nation through self-determination struggle.”
But then the sit at home was NOT even successful in Asaba, but some parents only prevented their children from going to school even though schools were open and teachers came to school on May 30, 2017.
Even people and heavy vehicular traffic was observed in Asaba as seen on TV. Asaba people are NOT really into all these secessionist stuff being propagated by those people across the River Niger, i.e., S/Eastern Nigeria.
mjbaba: A video has surfaced online showing IPOB's 'Prophet' Nnamdi Kami calling on all Igbos to boycott Churches headed by Yoruba Pastors.
In the video, obviously taken from Biafra TV online and most likely shot before the IPOB leader's incarceration by the Federal Government of Nigeria, Kanu is heard referring to any Igbo who attends a Yoruba church as "an Idiot, a complete fool" who should be ashamed of himself. He further added "If your pastor is Yoruba, you are not fit to be a human being"
kbdrim: Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana has described last week celebrated claim by Senator Ita Enang that 80 percent of Nigeria’s oil blocks is owned by Northerners as totally false and misleading. The lawyer in a statement released today and obtained by iReports-ng.com said majority of the nation’s oil blocks are owned by foreigners and foreign companies.
The statement reads in full:
“During the debate on the Petroleum Industry Bill last week on the floor of the Senate at Abuja the names of a few Nigerians to whom the Federal Government had allocated oil blocks were revealed. It was specifically alleged that 83 per cent of all oil blocks in the country are owned by northerners. Not unexpectedly, those who are won’t to complain of neglect and maginalisation of their geo-political zones have been demanding for equitable distribution of oil blocks among the comprador bourgeoisie of the various ethnic groups. Embarrassed by the disclosure and the diversionary furore it is generating the Arewa Consultative Forum has called for a public inquiry into the allegation that northerners are the largest beneficiaries of the oil block largesse in the country.
While I have never supported the policy of allocating the oil blocks owned exclusively by the Federal Government to selected individuals and foreign oil companies it is pertinent to point out that the list published by the media last week is totally outdated and grossly misleading. The list contained only the names of those who were allocated oil blocks under the defunct military junta. In other words, the list did not contain the names of the other traders who have been allocated oil blocks by the ruling party since 1999. Equally missing from the list are the names of multinational companies otherwise called “Oil majors” which control and manage the lion share of the oil and gas industry. For instance, I have a suit pending at the Federal High Court against the Ministry of Petroleum Resources over the renewal of the expired 40-year old licences of three oil blocks (which produce 580,000 barrels of crude oil per day) for Mobil Producing last year for the sum of $600 million notwithstanding that a Chinese oil company had offered to pay $5.8 billion for the same oil blocks !
Apart from Mobil there are about 17 other foreign oil companies which are the major key players in the oil industry while Nigerians are forced to operate in the marginal fields .The said foreign companies or Oil Majors own 80 % of the oil blocks and as such they are completely in charge of the oil and gas industry. They produce the oil and gas, and declare the figures they like. They smile to the banks daily while Nigerians fight over the crumbs from the Master’s Table. In spite of the indictment by the National Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI) some of the companies have continued to withhold billions of dollars from the Federation Account. The joint venture agreements between some oil producing countries and oil companies are in the ratio of 80/20 percent in favour of the owners of the oil. But in Nigeria it is 60/40 percent in favour of the Federal Government of whatever is declared by the oil companies. It is common knowledge that some of the foreign oil companies operating in Nigeria have, with the connivance of the Federal Government, been leasing oil blocks allocated to them to other persons or companies.
Incidentally, the disclosure in the Senate last week coincided with the death of President Hugo Rafael Chavez of Venezuela who nationalised the oil industry which enabled his government to generate enough revenue to fund a comprehensive welfare programme for the hitherto improverished people of the Latin American country. But the enomous commonwealth of the Nigerian people have been cornered by a few rent collectors and other members of the parasitic ruling class. A few of them who raked billions of dollars from the illegal sale of the oil blocks have openly confessed that they do not know what to do with the huge fund! Because such wealth has been privatised Nigeria cannot, like Venezuela, meet the eight Millenium Development Goals by 2015.
In view of the confusion caused by the partial information released by the Senate last week the Ministry of Petroleum Resources should, without any further delay, publish an up-to-date list of all local individuals and foreigners who have been allocated oil blocks by the Federal Government. After the publication the Goodluck Jonathan Administration should proceed to cancel all oil blocks allocated to a few interest groups and vest them in the Federal Government in line with section 44 of the Constitution. In other words the oil and gas should be nationalised in the interest of the Nigerian people. Instead of empowering either the President of the Republic or the Minister of Petroleum Resources to dole out oil blocks to serving ministers, party members, personal friends and business partners the National Assembly should ensure that all blocks are owned by the Federal Government in trust for the Nigerian people. This demand accords with section 16(1)(c ) of the Constitution which states that the State shall “manage and operate the major sectors of the economy”.
^^^^^^^^^^^ I am surprised that Chukudi Akasike the Saturday Punch correspondent could file in a FALSE story yesterday indicating that some so-called Niger Delta militants have given an ultimatum to northerners to hand over oil blocks by October 1, 2017.
The threat is FAKE news and mainstream publications like Punch have become very notorious within the last 2 years of sensationalism in their news reportages which are geared towards deliberately heating up the polity especially on the front pages.
The SUN, Authority, etc are also guilty of this sensationalism lifted from unverified Social Media Websites.
Ngokafor: ...Osibanjo should respect himself and resist the temptation and prompting from his self-centred kinsmen and squash any thought of contesting in 2019..
..or else,he will be thoroughly disgraced at the polls..thats if he even gets a ticket in APC.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ He is NOT going to contest in 2019, OK? A Northerner will still be the APC candidate (Tambuwal is someone that I favour most) for the presidency and a strong South-Westerner will still be the Vice-President preferably Prof. Oluyemi Osinbajo himself.
The APC politicians and technocrats from the Western Nigeria are very SAVVY and are NOT stupid to the point that they would push Prof. Osinbajo to contest like you wrongly suggested.
Manzy17: Your story Obiagu looks catchy but very political. the documents signed for the city of Port Harcourt is still resident the Brick House of port Harcourt signed by the Chiefs of Okrikaland and Ikwerre land and not any Owerri chief or King. the History of the Niger Delta belongs to the Niger Deltas and someone who speculates it. We the people of Rivers from Oyigbo down to Ndoni iknow how we began and where we normally thrive before the coming of both Portuguese and British and so when you say things not that the people of Rivers especially those who know the History of their land will dismiss it. Owerri Province was a political division for smooth running of the African peoples. Being in Eastern Nigeria does not make the Niger Deltans Igbo or does it? and get this pointer. The History of the Aro and the Ohafia trraces to the Obolo tribe of Niger Delta and those of Ndoki belongs to another clan of the Ijaws. The entire Niger Deltas where classified by the Portuguese from then as Oru and Kumoni this dates before the word Igbo or Ijo existed as a nation. The Ijos retain the Oru and so does the Imo in Igboland> I will tell you this. Obumotu is never an Igboland and cannot be from History till present and this is not as a result of the bias in which you have been writing this propaganda and painting the people of the region as robbers. If the Ikwerre people more Bini and Ijo fathers who formed their towns and less Igbo friends that were absorbed could accept to be Ijos, Binis and Igbos but an entity as a hybrid group then we should respect them>. Stop diging old infested wounds like buzzy flies because the salt is always ready to purify the infested wound for healing to take place. Igbo people keep claiming Niger Delta and always claim superiority this is really the problem of Igbos generally. All men are equal under the sun and no slave nor master. My granny is Igbo and I school in Igbo territory but never try to downgrade or remind them of how much my people were robbed and hurt by them but I keep hearing it. consider this. Yoruba hates Igbos, Hausas, Niger Deltas and everyone in Nigeria because they are Jewish? funny. All Niger Delta triubes are of Jewish origin separated long ago and in modern era fused as one and that is why it is easy to relate with aLll Igbos and Yorubas and Middle Beltans from the same faith stock. My Advice whether you end up insulting me as you showed in previous comments or not is that my Ancestral land attached to a province under Owerri Province does not mean that I belong to Owerri. Let the past that brought hurts remain. this bias and claims should stop. check your homeland proximity and what you claim to be yours. the people of Obumotu was resettled when the agreement was done for the Harcourt to use the place for import and export of the crude of the region and thereby Changing the name from Obumotu to port of Harcourt and after which during the Nigerian Civil war the Igbos conqurered it and renamed it Ugwuocha yet it is return to the true people, Ikwerres and Okrikans and now that all is well this new bias is resuming and you expect the world to believe this. sight your documents to prove that this land was signed by your chiefs and was inhabited by your people during slave trade and before the amalgamation of 1914 and not the political division done by the wicked British in their divide and rule policies to engage in wrong joining of people that made free people slaves to others in ancient times. Port Harcourt my brothers is not and Igboland but was placed in Owerri Province because of easy control by the British. the on all the sides of Port Harcourt geographically is Ijaw city states that are now LGAs. and major part of this city is the inhabited by the Okrika Ijaws from time immemorial. also the Port that gave the city the name is exactly Opoosite Isaka-Ama and Kalabari water territory> understand the geography> see the people there and say the truth and not the bias>. I pray you are not one of those people fanning discord amongst the Rivers people and Igbos because I am not and my grand mother is an Obowo woman. very close to Owerri. this is just an eye opener for everyone and the documents are valid in the Rivers State Government House where it cannot be tampered with. Thank You.
^^^^^^ A nice post... but number 20 is debatable. What is the source of the info on the number of professors in Nigeria?
The bullet points ought to have been written in small letters and NOT all capital letters which in Internet etiquette means YOU are shouting.
Last but not least, Brig. Gen. Godwin Alabi-Isama's mum is a Yoruba from Ilorin in Kwara State and his late father was from what is now Delta State. He speaks Yoruba language fluently since he is much closer to his maternal roots just like Mr. Fola Arthur-Worrey whose mum is from Lagos Island and his British-born father is from originally from Ughelli in Delta State. Fola Arthur-Worrey took over from Prof. Oluyemi Osinbajo as the Attorney General of Lagos State.
ehikwe22: There's difference between criticism and hateful condemnation. I can read between the two. They don't just criticize but condemn him and his people opening old wound. Urhobos didn't allow Okowa become governor. They ganged up and fought with all their might and lost. Yes, Ibori is a friend of Anioma and a man of his word. Though he's a criminal just like every other politician, we love him for his integrity. Okowa won the 2007 PDP primary against Uduaghan but he reached an agreement with Ibori and Uduaghan to step down for Uduaghan until 2015. That's not easy an easy decision but he agreed because of the trust he has for Ibori. When it was time for the 2015 election, Urhobos went against Okowa even after knowing he's Ibori's anointed candidate. That's just politics for you. But now that the election is over, they should let sleeping dog lie and prepare for next election. That's just my point.
Yes, the capital of Delta State shouldn't be in Asaba but it ended up there. I noted that I understand how painful it must feel.
As for Anioma speaking a variant of Igbo. Yes, majority of Anioma towns speak Igboid languages but Anioma is not Bilingual or monogenous. 11 languages are spoken in Anioma. Even Urhobo, Isoko and Ijaw are spoken in some Ukwani parts. Orogun is partly Anioma and partly Urhobo. Igala and o Yoruba is spoken in some Enuani clans while 5 villages in Agbor are Edo speaking. Agbor has 11 villages, 6 are Ika speaking and the remaining 5 are Edo speaking. Some of the 5 Edo speaking villages are losing their dialect to Ika but some still retain it eg. Ozanogogo and some others. Ika language itself is a mixture of Bini, Esan and Igbo though most of our Edo are fast getting replaced by Igbo. Many of the Enuani groups are of Igala origin, some Edo, some Igbo and thers Yoruba. Even Asaba, Illah and surrounding villages are Igala origin. Ika is mostly Bini, Esan and little Ndokwa Ukwani and Enuani. Other Anioma groups also have some Ika migrations. Ukwani has lots of intermigration from Urhobo Isoko area. We're just too heterogeneous to group us into one group. But one thing worthy of note about Anioma is that all Anioma groups, clans and villages have Edo and Igbo influence irrespective of where the original founders came from eg. Igbusa and Ogwashi Uku are the main Anioma clans that have Igbo origin but they also have villages that migrated from Bini. Illah is Igala but some villages there are Bini descendant.
Ika is a language of it's own and not a dialect of any language. Listen to what a linguist has to say
"A language is a dialect with an army and navy. His point being that the difference between a language and a dialect was ultimately a political distinction and had little to do with linguistics per se. Thus, German and Dutch are separate languages, but Mandarin and Meixian Chinese are supposed dialects" this being said, you can see that citing a linguistic theory to prove an Igbo heritage for Anioma doesn't hold water. Every linguist has his own concepts and theory. You don't look at everything as black and white.
And what do you mean about it being impossible to separate language from culture? Do you know about language shift, endangered language and language extinction? An endangered language is a language that is at risk of falling out of use as its speakers die out or shift to speaking another language. Language loss occurs when the language has no more native speakers and becomes a "dead languag Does it mean when these languages die that their culture die along with them immediately? Go to the North, many languages there are endangered. Some have gone extinct because of Hausa language but these people still practice their culture. They don't practice Hausa culture. Itsekiri speak a Yoruboid language but they practice Edo culture and they're neither Edo nor Yoruba. Same way our language is Igboid and our culture Edo. We're neither Igbo nor Edo.
~~~~~~ @ehikwe22 This is a GREAT post from you. DNA testing will further prove that what you wrote about the multiple ethnic origins of the Anioma people is TRUE!
~~~~~~ This video link above got me laughing till the very end. I loved the man's sense of humour and the fact that his DNA result clearly showed the Yoruboid/Edoid ancestry, i.e, Itsekiri/Urhobo parentage! The iconic Nigerian actor, Richard Mofe Damijo's dad is Urhobo while his mum is Itsekiri, and this just confirms that the centuries-long family ties between Eastern Yoruboid and Edoid groups based on oral and written traditions is very TRUE. From my studies going back since the 80's, a significant number of Itsekiris have Urhobo mothers and vice versa. Professor Itsay Sagay, Chief Sam Amuka-Pemu, the Publisher of Vanguard, radio gal Mashe Uwashe, are some of those with Urhobo mothers.
This will open up unlimited opportunities in using DNA to know the ethnic or the ancestral origins of Anioma people on both sides of the river Niger in Delta North, Anambra, Rivers, etc. We need to finally solve the rather annoying issue of whether members of each of the communities are of Edoid, Igala, Esan, Iboid, Yoruboid ancestries or even of mixed origins such as in Asaba, Onitsha, Ebu, Ilah, Agbor, Ugbodu and Ukwunzu, etc.
Diaspora and Nigeria-based Ikweres of Rivers State need to do this test from AfricanAncestry or DNALand to solve the issue of the ownership of PortHarcourt once and for all. If they are confirmed to be 100% Ibos or VICE VERSA, then it will change the historical narrative.
I remember in 2005, while going through the profile of the co-founders of AfricanAncestry [which has a large DNA data base of African ethnic groups], they both had Yoruba and European ancestries of varying percentages. The Yoruba DNA was in the maternal lineage for both of them, but surprisingly, the male co-founder who is black and dark-skinned had a European paternal ancestry and it points to the FACT that 1out of 4 African American male has a DIRECT white paternal ancestry!
This thread should be on the Front Page because it is highly intellectual and illuminating!
ochobaba: that's no tribal mark brov cz if you see one you go hide your own yours could be as a result of theft or something similar to kids that doesn't stay long on earth
Can you tell us a little about the Issele–Uku Kingdom?
If you look at our history, we are descendants of the great Benin empire and as the history goes, on or about 1230 AD, Oba Eweka of Benin the first sent his second son, Prince Uwade towards the Eastern part of the Benin Empire first of all to check the influx of the Easterners into the kingdom and secondly to expand the empire. So Prince Uwade came along with his wives and some delegate warriors towards the eastern part, they settled here in the present Issele–Uku. So they settled and practised the same pattern of ascension to the throne like that in Benin. So after him, Prince Uwade became Ogewade and after him, his first son took over. So, that has been our brief history. We are descendants of the great Benin Kingdom.
What are some of the things you will love to achieve during your reign?
In terms of goal, Issele–Uku is very rich in culture and tradition some of which have been eroded. So, my short term goal is to revive a society which we call the “Omu” society, a peaceful united society. My long term goal is to see that our rich culture and traditions are preserved. I want to create an awareness on the need to revive and sustain our rich traditions for the world to see.
What are some of the taboos in this kingdom?
There are so many and we wouldn’t leave here if we start listing them. It is forbidden for an indigene to place a curse on another here and we take that issue very seriously. Then there are certain places in the town where coffins cannot pass through. The taboos are so many and I can’t start giving instances but when you live here you would get to know them.
Before you were crowned, you spent some time in Benin. What is the significance of this tradition to the people of Issele-Uku Kingdom?
Like I said, we are descendants of the Benin Kingdom and the relationship that the Benin and Issele–Uku people hold is very strong. It’s just like the popular saying, ‘if you do not know where you are coming from, you do not know where you are going.’ We understand and know that we have an ancestral link with the Benin people; so we try as much as possible to ensure that we have that relationship intact.
obstead200: I am an igbo man. But sadly, I must say u are very correct.
Anyway, It is not the fault of Innoson. U will need investment in much more elaborate machinery, manpower and R & D to manufacture most parts in Nigeria. I believe that if he has government support, he will go all the way. Imagine what he will do if; -Government signs an undertaking to buy 90% of all government vehicles from innoson. -Orders all multinationals to buy 70% of all there vehicles from Innoson. -Encourages all private individuals who are working class and desires to buy innoson cars by giving them interest friendly loans.
I assure u, even international financial agencies & investors will fall over themselves to give innoson the required finance to achieve 80% local content.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ @obstead200
~Innocent Chukwuma - "Without Bank of Industry there will be NO Innoson."
Innoson Motors is actually financed by the Bank of Industry[BOI]. Innoson Motors got loans running into millions of Naira from BOI - it is NOT a majorly self-financed by Innocent Chukwuma.
Innocent Chukwuma said at the "2012 African Business of the Year Award" in London that "without Bank of Industry [led by the Former CEO of UBA Capital Plc,and now MD/CEO of BOI, Mr. Rasheed Adejare Olaoluwa], there will be NO Innoson."
I hope this info will help people to know that it is a truly NIGERIAN COMPANY FUNDED by BOI.
mekaboy: Nigeria has really invested alot to turn this state around. Lagos was really built on the resources and sweat of all Nigerians.
#Nomansland
@mekaboy
Don't get it twisted with your very unwise last comment about Lagos State being a nomansland.
I believe you are Ibo from your name..... and this statement is notoriously common among mainly Ibos.
Now the capital of Nigeria was Marina, Lagos Island and NOT Lagos State.
When the British left in 1960, Lagos Island served as their administrative capital.
Lagos State was founded by Gen. Yakubu Gowon on May 27, 1967, and Lagos Island also served as the capital of the new Lagos State as well as of Nigeria till 1976 when Ikeja became the new capital of Lagos State!
Sir Allan Burns, the Governor General of Nigeria clearly stated in his book "The History of Nigeria" that Lagos Island is Yoruba, including Ilorin. He listed in the 4th edition of the book published in 1948, page 33 that of the 11 largest towns in Nigeria, 10 of them are Yoruba towns such as Ibadan, Lagos Island, Ogbomosho, Ilorin, Abeokuta, Iwo, Oshogbo, Ede, Iseyin, and Oyo town. The Hausa town of Kano was listed among the 11 largest towns I have listed from the book of this senior British Colonial officer who acted as the Governor of Nigeria in 1942! His book is right in front of me as I type this...
The Ijebus of Epe LGA, Ikorodu LGA, Lekki, the Aworis of Badagry also own the remaining Local Governments in Lagos State, and the Ogus also own Badagry LGA with the Aworis.
These 3 sub-ethnic groups Ijebus, Aworis, and Ogus are the land owners of Lagos State and will remain so till the end of time! Lagos State - NOT even Marina, Lagos (Lagos Island) is a so-called nomansland.
Desist from exhibiting your educational and historical ignorance on Nairaland and let the true indigenes and owners of Lagos State enjoy their State which Gen. Yakubu Gowon created for them in May 1967 along with the old Rivers State making 12 states that he created with the strong input of the Ijaw nationalist leader (Chief Harold Dappa Biriye), and Dr. Ken Saro-Wiwa.
Young people like you don't read history book anymore and that is why some Ibos deliberately distort and insult the history and indigenes of Lagos State by saying Lagos is a nomansland. You will never find Edo people, other Nigerians, and even Yorubas from other states such as Ogun, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Oyo, Ondo, and Osun typing such reckless statements online or make verbal statements calling Lagos State a nomansland. It is only people of Ibo ancestry that I have heard exhibiting such overbearing attitude!
Marina, Lagos Island(The Capital of the British Colonialists from 1906 till 1960), is NOT the same as the whole of Lagos State).
jumzzy448: hmm. may his soul rest in peace oo. that's why I hate living with dogs cos they can attack their owner anytime. there was a day I was coming back from somewhere. I don't really know the place so I decided not to go with my car. when I came back, I was holding my documents in my hands. this useless dog was lying under the car ( its a rot weiler) don't know if I spelt it well. the dog was looking at me and I too was extra conscious. immediately I opened my gate to
step in, it jumped up and wanted to attach me. I flung all my papers, my hand bag and even my slippers. I ran for my dear life. it was the gateman who had to hold the dog for me to pass. when hubby came back and I told him, he said the dog was trying to greet me. I told him to tell his dog to hold his greetings cos I don't need it. I beg hubby to move it out. now the dog is in hubby's home town..
Fhemmmy: Here is a 2010 Lexus RX350 model that could be yours for only 6.3M Naira . . . . And for the Hybrid, i dont see any reason why they wont be able to get the parts in Nigeria, it is a Toyota vehicle.
@Fhemmmy
Thanks for the brilliant reply.
I guess the price you quoted excludes the cost of clearing... I'm a Lexus RX enthusiast/lover, and will get back to you ASAP.
Yababoy: An uninformed opinion also. Peeps need to do thorough research before passing judgements. How would he just conclude that all pitbulls are vicious. Does he know what responsible dog ownership means? Pleaseeee
@Yababoy
Can you tell us here and now what your definition of Responsible Dog Ownership means?
I did NOT write or give an uninformed opinion here and would advice you to read my post to @arcbay just directly above.
I love most breeds of dogs but would be careful in getting a pure pitbull based on the higher percentage of attacks on other dogs and the attacks on people - including little kids who got killed by this breed of dog(it can be very distressing to see even little kids get killed by some of these pitbulls whose owners allowed to stray).
Some people think it is a status symbol to show of with pet lions, snakes, cheetahs, pure pitbulls, etc., but these animals have been known to sometimes attack their owners and complete strangers all because some people want to show off with their so-called tamed wild animals.
Once again if you have any information to share on HOW you have successfully tamed a pure-breed pitbull, then let us know for the benefit of all.
I'm a lover of some breeds of dogs such as bulldogs because they look rugged and cute, but I need to clarify that I asked folks to Please Beware because statistics indicate that of all dog breeds in the US, pure-breed pitbulls have been discovered to attack other dogs and people the most - UNPROVOKED!
I have some copies of TIME magazine of 11 years now were different pure pitbulls, not mixed breeds, killed 2 children below the age of 5 in Germany and the US, and since then I have done extensive online and offline research on this animal.
Last but not least it will be useful for anyone who wants to get a dog to learn how to take care of them, but pitbulls require far more attention by owners because they have a wild side to them like lions and cheetahs are in touch with their wild sides unless tamed by true professionals.
topazjosh: Please if you are have a male pitbull, bull mastiff or mastiff due to mate,try and call and call 08137508882 or add pin:28675EDF Am having a female pitbull due for mating,try and holla back asap.
@all
Please beware!
Pitbulls - male and female are very ferocious animals and have been known to viciously maul people and kill children!
In Europe and America, there is a growing call for these animals to be restricted from residential areas.
ayexcel100: for those saying d data finish fast, I want to tell them that they are android users, and they should know that android consume data, I used d normal 250mb before and I know How fast it can vanish, d best u can do is restrict ur background data etc to maximize ur data. thanks
@ayexcel100
Hi!
How do you restrict your background data as an android phone user?
You are playing mischievious mind games here with your posts.
A lot of people in Nigeria [including The FEDERAL GOVERNMENT of NIGERIA led by GEJ, Christian Association of Nigeria and other groups had initially called for AMNESTY for Boko Haram at the same time that General Buhari was reported in the papers to have called for amnesty thinking that would solve the problem like that of the Niger Delta boys - but it didn't work].
Punch and other major newspapers online - and offline reported a lot of non-muslims in Nigeria and abroad also muted the amnesty offer, but the bastard BH boys did NOT ACCEPT the offer.
It is most unkind of YOU to insult GMB with this act o PROPAGANDA,..
