matuskyoo7:Nope. Not advisable. It's highly unlikely you'll be able to convert a tourist visa to work or PR visa. |
TheCongo2:It's funny how I only discovered city-data forum yesterday, and now someone mentions it today. Such a giant forum about pretty much every city in the world. Kept me glued to my PC all day. |
Fram:Hardly |
Scholastica16:Soo true mahn! I was expressing the exact same sentiment about Canada yesterday. As a grad student, you're a student, a researcher and teacher simultaneously |
@Scholastica15 and @CptCharlesVane You guys have made your point. Understood. Just so you know, I wasn't trying to stroke my ego. I'm a Ghanaian |
Scholastica16:Better than only 15%, which implies that Ibadan should be ranked somewhere below 10,000th in the world. Come on, you can't really think that lowly of the best unis in Nigeria. Times Higher Education ranks it around 800-ish. Not even 1000 oo. Well, no need to argue. |
Wretch32:The fact that a school is located in America doesn't necessarily mean it is better than EVERY university in Nigeria. There are 4000+ post secondary institutions in America and personally, I believe U of Ibadan is better than over 70% of them. |
It always fills my heart with joy when I open this thread and see strings of approvals. I've only been able visit this thread intermittently since I landed in Cannyland in August. The education system is very excellent. It has been designed to make you thunk critically - not just memorize and dump it all in one exam. Studies will fill up all your free time. Canada is a great country and you'll love it. To all recently approved and to also TRV hopefuls, great destinies await you here. Remember! The cold no be joke oo psych yourself mentally and physically that you will practically be living inside a deep freezer for 5 months in a year. WINTER IS COMINGIt shall end in praises. |
AyoBrightBoy:Yeah. Similar medical inadmissibility rules are applied to immigrants and TRV applicants. As long as you do medicals in your application, it's going to go through the same review process regardless of the type of Visa. I even have reason to believe CIC may be more lenient with TRV applicants since they are staying for a shorter duration. That's just my opinion though. |
eastafro:Yeah, fair enough. I get your point. |
eastafro:It may not be all doom and gloom. Back in April, in response to several outcries from the public, CIC relaxed their rules regarding medical inadmissibilty. https://www.cicnews.com/2018/04/canada-revises-controversial-medical-inadmissibility-rules-for-immigrants-0410513.html#gs.PBa9hTE So its very possible that you may still get your TRV approved. |
segtak25:Yes |
ibnhasan:At this time, you most certainly won't be able to wear nornal clothings pretry much anywhere in Canada. It may not be too cold in some places for thermal wears to be necessary. But you'll probably need some sweaters and jackets. Where are you planning to land though? |
michaelogunleye:You can visit this thread https://www.nairaland.com/4657743/canadian-express-entry-federal-skilled |
Jeandji:If your passport will expire in 2021, then your study permit to be issued will also expire in 2021. The difference between the study permit and the Visa is that the Visa simply allows you enter and leave the borders of Canada. The study permit is what actually allows you to enroll and study in an educational institution in Canada. That being said, if your visa expires in 2019 and your study permit is still valid, you'll still be eligible to continue studying. But you will not be able to travel outside Canada (such as during vacations. Because you won't be able to return to Canada on an expired Visa). If you want to travel, you'll have to apply for visa renewal when it expires, which wouldn't be difficult at all. |
It seems you've assumed that since you don't have to pay until you get the visa, you are safe. But understand this, CIC will not simply grant a work permit to just anybody overseas without a valid job offer. If you go ahead with this and the so called agent commits any fraudulent act in your name, the consequences will be severe for you, the least of which is your chances of ever getting a visa to Canada (and any other 1st world country for that matter) in the future will be greatly diminished. Be Wise |
ottawasenators: GlitteringStar:Its bad if that's your 1st time experiencing it. But he'll get used to it very quickly. |
Linsigne:Unless you intend to land in Quebec, it's not really necessary. Its good if you learn it. But you can still live comfortably in almost all the other provinces without knowing how to say "Good morning" in French. |
TFLASHOGEE:Yeah. Canadians are more enthusiastic about hockey and american football, which most africans arent very familiar about. |
Newmum0615:Yeah. Apparently, the tumultuous weather yesterday was caused by an approaching cold front in Ontario, which kind of interacted turbulently with the existing warm weather. Yesterday marked the official end of summer in southern Ontario (climate-wise). Now that the cold front has made landfall, temperatures are going to drop significantly. |
Diijah:Scroll to the very top or very bottom of the page. Click on "Reply" right next to the page numbers. |
Heavy storm in GTA today. |
kayvine4u: joe10:Exactly. In addition to that, an MSc in Canada will attract more CRS points than an MSc from UK. Finally, once you eventually become a PR, having previously lived in Canada and also having Canadian degree will significantly improve your job prospects, compared to your PR peers who just landed from overseas. |
seunnuga:Ironically, the first 3 universities listed have the lowest admission rates |
Sandydav:Basement apartments are usually cheaper, but a few drawbacks are; - They usually have lower ceilings - They sometimes have no windows. Or if they do have a window, its usually small - The rooms are very cold in the winter (hot air rises) However, you may find a basement apartment that is very well kept and does not conform to any of the demerits listed above. Basically, what this means is, under no circumstance should you sign a lease for a basement apartment if you haven't physically been in the room to inspect it. Cos the online pictures can be misleading. |
whyx06:Among the 60+ approvals I've come across this year, only 1 was granted without a medical request. So it's possible, but vanishingly rare. |
Ysakaws:Not a problem at all. I even went one step further. I applied to unis in US, Canada and Australia. Here I am now, chilling in Canada |
Wow...Calgary/Edmonton already experiencing freezing weather? While we the Torontonians are still enjoying summer-style weather.

jdhills:You're welcome. Yeah you can just upload the letter of attestation in the column for proof of English language proficiency |
mathy001:Yeah sure. I gave that response on the assumption that his department does require finding a supervisor. Since he was asking when is the best time to contact them. In my department for example, hunting for a supervisor is an absolute necessity in pretty much every school in Canada (that is, if you are applying fo the research option). That being said, yes, not all departments require applicants to secure a supervisor. But the OP was inquiring about whether he should contact the profs now or wait till later, to which I advised he contacts them now. |
jdhills:Firstly, September is the perfect time to start contacting supervisors. Some even start in August. Trust me, if you wait till Oct/Nov before you email them, they'll tell you they've already taken their students or they don't have funding for you at the moment. So start contacting them NOW. Secondly, English proficiency certificate is NOT an exam you prepare and write (like IELTS, TOEFL, etc). It is merely an official letter written by your undergrad institution attesting that English was the primary means of communication while you were receiving your undergraduate education. So just contact your sch in Nigeria and enquire about the procedures for obtaining an English Proficiency letter. Greetings from Toronto Cheers PS: Pardon me if there are grammatical or spelling errors, I'm almost running late for class. |
~~LONG POST ALERT~~ LANDING EXPERIENCE Hi guys, sorry for not posting earlier. The last couple of days have been pretty hectic - running up and down all day. My Emirates flight was scheduled for departure at 26th Aug, 5:50pm. Accra to Dubai to London (Gatwick) to Toronto. I was really impressed with the onboard service of the flight attendants. Food was also good (though I couldn't eat most of them). Both of my layovers in both Dubai and London were very short (2hrs each). I literally had to run at Dubai airport. What a feat of Engineering that airport is. Now to address people's concerns about transiting in London. If you have a Canadian visa, you can transit in London if you meet ALL the following criteria: 1. Your inbound and outbound flights are with the same airline. In other words, you do not have to claim you luggage at the airport before boarding the next plane 2. You will be entering and leaving London at the same airport. (Either Heathrow or Gatwick) 3. Your arrival time and departure time at the airport are on the same calendar date. i.e You will not stay at the airport overnight. 4. You will stay inside the airport throughout the transit period. (You can't go sightseeing outside) After a long and stressful 28hr journey, I finally landed in Toronto at 7pm local time. The sun was still shining. I filled my customs declaration and headed towards the looonngg queue to get my study permit. I spent almost an hour in the queue. It finally reached my turn; Officer: Good evening Me: Good evening. (I handed my passport and customs declaration to him) Officer: Which school are you attending? Me: York University Officer: What course? ME: Masters in Civil Engineering Officer: Can you tell me how much of your tuition you've paid so far? Me: I'm being fully funded by the University Officer: Oh! that's nice. (With smiles) He typed for a while and was asking me how my flight went. I told him it was awesome, but also stressful. He went inside and came back with my study permit. He told me to study hard and make Ghana and also Canada proud. He did not ask for any other document. No letter of introduction, no admission letter, no proof of funding. Went to claim my baggage. Couldn't find it on the baggage carousel. I went to the arrivals hall and saw them faithfully standing there, waiting for their master. I exited the airport and whispered to myself, "Welcome to Canada". Canada is such a beautiful city. The tall structures in downtown Toronto exude an air of grandeur that makes you feel so tiny. It's almost intimidating at first. Canadians are really nice and helpful. They smile a lot. They apologize for the tiniest inconvenience they cause you. PS: When you are traveling to Canada, make sure you get a travel adapter for your laptop and other gadgets. Their sockets are very different and chances are, your phone or laptop charger wont fit into them. Trust me! You don't want to buy the adapter here. When they mention the price to you and you convert to your local currency, you'll start crying. To all who are yet to travel, safe journey. Best wishes to all TRV hopefuls. Cheers. |
