The facts about homosexuality By Ekenwa Nze

IT was appalling to read a letter titled "Obasanjo and Gay rights" in The Guardian of March 2, 2006, purportedly signed by 16 organisations. Twelve of the organisations are foreign. Only four are Nigerian. It is hard, if not impossible, to believe that all those societies, most of which are meant to be procuring the good of the society and individual persons, undersigned that letter and therefore identify with its contents.

What is a human right ? If the logic of the aforementioned letter is to be followed, then there should be no such thing as war against terrorism because the so-called terrorists are freely expressing themselves ; the association of 419 propagators should be allowed to thrive, all under the charter of freedom of expression, association and assembly.

The most alarming part of the letter is the statement that the bill incriminating same-sex relationships et al undermines Nigeria's struggle to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS. That is nothing less than a treacherous lie! The history of the HIV/AIDS pandemic is a clear testimony. Here's a short excerpt :

"In the early months of 1981, five young men were admitted to various hospitals in Los Angeles (LA), suffering from an unusual type of pneumonia caused by a commonly occuring protozoa known as Pneumocystis carinii. Most individuals have been exposed to this microbe and it is part of the normal flora of many people. It is harmless in individuals with a competent immune system, The physician in charge of the first cases in LA was puzzled. These five patients were all young men who had evidence of a widespread immunodeficiency without any apparent reason. They had evidence of other infections, and coincidentally were all homosexual. At about the same time as physicians in LA had reported the cluster of cases of pneumocystosis, physicians in New York City and California notified the CDC (Centre for Disease Control) of the occurrence of a severe form of Kaposi's sarcoma in 26 young men. Kaposi's sarcoma is a vascular neoplasm, uncommon in the United States and in Western Europe, , Of the 26 patients who had reported to the CDC in July of 1981, all had evidence of an immunodeficiency not related to any known cause and several had other serious infections (four having pneumocystosis). Evidently, thanks to aberrant sexual behaviour, the current most deadly incurable disease was introduced into the human race. Admittedly, there can be and there are tendencies that deviate from the norm. In such situations, the acceptable practice since the history of empirical sciences, medicine in particular, has been to study the cases to arrive at reasonable solutions for ameliorating or solving the problem. The inadmissible, however, is to arbitrarily classify the abnormal (deviation from the norm) as normal. Rightly, a human person should always enjoy the love, respect being the first manifestation, that is due to him/her, a consequence of his/her inalienable dignity. When there is an anomaly, whether physical, psychological, sexual, or otherwise, the appropriate stance is not a denial of the anomaly as such but rather a concerted effort at correction and prevention. There is no reason for the homosexual tendency to be an exception.

Very often, this tendency is given free reins in the circumstances that prevail in boarding schools as well as homes where children are left with warped adults without the supervision of parents. Some people claim that homosexual activities are natural. This is unmistakably false. Everything natural has an inherent objective end (goal). A homosexual relationship lacks that characteristic whereas the intrinsic objective end of a heterosexual relationship is universally clear: the generation of new human life or lives.

Homosexual practices are always listed as one of the high risk factors for HIV/AIDS. It is therefore baffling that no mention of it is made in practically all the campaigns against the plague. One of the solutions proffered at that early stage of the scourge was a behavioural change. I think it is high time we focused seriously on this point. So far, the hype about HIV/AIDS has been promoting or observing a deadly silence over trends that facilitate its spread. These include sexual promiscuity through the distribution and propaganda of the use of condoms which have been shown to be ineffective. The media has also been contributory in the same adverse direction through the films, advertisements, forms of entertainment, transmitted, and the prevailing vogue in the sphere of dressing is certainly not a positive factor.

Real sincere interest to avert the menace being enacted by HIV/AIDS requires action by individual persons, groups and government at all levels, and the use of all available licit means to inculcate/disseminate the values that would bring about an effective change in mentality, attitude and conduct in the right direction. Human beings need to be reminded that what differentiates them from animals is the fact that they possess intelligence, will, and freedom ( the potential to direct themselves to the end proper to them), and not let themselves be derailed by a handful of erotomaniacs.

Anybody encouraging an amoral living for individuals and society, a few manifestations of which are homosexual activities, adolescent sex, is an enemy of human dignity and authentic freedom. Nature itself does not leave us in any doubt. The adverse effects of anti-natural acts do not take long in coming. The emergence of HIV/AIDS is one glaring example among many. Let's see where the next onslaught will come from. Maybe the much lauded IVF !

Vice President Atiku Abubakar was on Saturday booed in Lagos by about 1,000 supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party in protest against what they alleged to be his anti-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s posture and presidential ambition. Abubakar was said to have arrived Lagos on Friday on a private visit.

The protesters, mostly youths, had earlier in the day held a peaceful demonstration at a junction about 100 metres from Abubakar’s Lagos’ Ikoyi Crescent home.

In a convoy of six buses, popularly called ‘molue,’ the PDP supporters arrived the Presidential Lounge of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos at about 10.30am to protest against Abubakar, who was scheduled to pass through the airport for his return trip to Abuja.

The demonstrators, who chanted anti-Atiku slogansn and carried anti-Atiku placards, said they were also out to express their solidarity for Obasanjo.

Some of the placards read, “Atiku, do not disintegrate the country;” “Atiku, you are a head of a traitor;” “Atiku, it’s time to quit – resign now,” among others.

A team of policemen, led by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Adebayo, however, prevented the protesters from gaining entrance into the main building housing the Presidential Lounge before and after the vice president arrived the airport as was the case earlier at Abubakar’s Lagos home.

IF the recommendation for the scrapping of the States Independent Electoral Commissions, by the Ibrahim Nasir Mantu Committee is allowed to stand by the lawmakers, Nigeria would have been taken several decades back democratically, Chairmen of States Independent Electoral Commission, (SIECS) said in Abuja at the weekend,

After their one-day consultative meeting in Abuja, the chairmen, grouped under the aegis of the Forum of States Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON) announced their condemnation of the decision of the Mantu panel to include the abrogation of SIECS in its report.

"The Forum is unaware of any submissions, either by an individual, organisations, government or extra governmental institution proposing, suggesting or advocating the scrapping of SIECS," chairman of forum, Dr. Aliyu Malami Yandoto said.

"The Committee's recommendation, by implication, simply means the powers granted to the states over local governments under Section 7 and 8 of the 1999 Constitution are being transferred to the federation at a time when we are clamouring for the restructuring of the Nigerian federation. The Supreme Court judgment in Abia v. The Federal Government & Others is very clear on the point."

Yandoto asked the National Assembly not take the nation backward, saying he was aware of the challenges facing amendments to the Constitution, since it does not start and end with the National Assembly.

"The Forum observed electoral matters are sensitive and have a direct bearing on the confidence of the people in the democratic system," he said. "There is the need for all stakeholders to exercise their lawful authority in a responsible manner and in a way designed to achieve the fundamental objectives of the law and the constitution. We, therefore, advise the National Assembly to exercise caution in the exercise of its powers so as not to throw away the baby with the bath water."

this "3rd world" crap done dey tire me sef. Who be "first world" or "second world"? D terminology was cooked up during the cold war. Please do not confuse the practise of IFA divination with doing bad or harming another person. It is basically a means of finding solutions to spiritual problems using means and ways that have being used in solving similar problem before. Do you know that oil Palm processing is as profitable as crude oil refining. What about maize, sorgum, wheat, cocoa, garlic e.t.c. These are potential source of huge income far more than crude oil.
But we have to work for it to come into fruition.
A nation that can not feed herself does not worth being called a Nation.

Appropriate Agric. practise will generate huge employment (which will leads to less security problems), conserve foreign exchange and as a fact of fact secure the nation against foreign pressure.
The Northern Parts of the country are with large land mass, which can be annex for the benefit of the nation with good, responsible and visionary leadership.

Hausas will be better off with a weak centre, if only they are made to realise the great advantages and potentials of their large area mass 4 Agriculture. Agriculture is as good (if not better) revenue earner as crude oil when given the right attentions.
As crude oil gives energy to auto, industries so does agriculture to human beings.

I am often confused, annoyed and belittled when reading both local and foreign newspapers and my potentailly great country, Nigeria, is refered to a 3rd world country. I prefer been refer to as a Developing Country/Nation.

True federal system means given every component part of the country (in our case-- states) thier dues. Not distributing the nation wealth according to the desire of a very small group of people in Abuja. What has federal Govt. got to do with primary and secondary education when it is stated in the constitution that they are the responsiblity of Local and State Govt. respectivly, what has fed. Govt. got to do with Agriculture, land transportation, provision of water e.t.c.
The main function of a truely fed Govt. is the formulation of policies for the good of the nation and co-ordinating the relationship btw component parts (states). What we are having is a Unitary system given to us a democratic Govt. Let each state feed the center and not the other way round.
If we reduce the money going to the center, there will be less agitation about going to Abuja.
Each state Govt. will be accountable to the people of the state. Can u imagine been made to pay tax and nothing u did not see anything be done with the money in your area, won't u start asking questions? the people responsible for spending the tax payer money are closer at the state level than Abuja. How many of us can afford to go to Abuja? It will make us to less dependent on oil money?

True federal system stops to work, the day crude oil was discover in Nigeria and everybody now abandon agriculture that has been substaining us b4 crude oil.

Well I am aware that there has been some improvements in Yorubaland post Bola and co. era, It is only these set of present PDP Govt. in YorubaLand that have not done anything. Bisi Akande did alot in Osun State - New Secretariat and Govt House, many road network, new water schemes, free education and health services,likewise Lam Adesina in Oyo State, Adebayo- Ekiti state. Have you being to Lagos and see what Tinubu 's wonders?.

Secession or no session what I believe everybody wants is restoration of his/her Human Dignity. I can aspire for any post irrespectively of where I am from. That Is why every section of the country is complaining about one thing or the other and it will be so until we have a r[b]esponsible Govt. that leads and not rules us[/b].
Let us weaken the center and we see less of these complaints.

With secession, at the initial stage it will be very tough but with responsibe and visionary leadership we will all be better off.

The fact is that OBJ wants to overstay in ASO ROCK beyond 2007.
Whether he has come out to say it or not is an issue for discussion, his body language says it all. Every pro-3rd term rally is given police protection and shown on the NTA but opposition are prevented from even meeting. What about series of meeting in ASO ROCK by pro-3rd term groups.
Are we back to the ABACHA DAYS??

Secondly, the choice of his successor should not be his problem, it is for us, Nigerians to decided. He can only support his choice not imposition. Well I do knowthat OBJ does not beleive in Election but selection.

The clampdown on members of ACD by the PDP GOVT using the State Secret Service as preparations for 2007 elections gather momentum.

Among those that have being arrested/detained are: Lawal Kaita, Abubakar Rimi, Audu Ogbe, Dahlatu e.t.c.
While those of the PDP that have being indicted by Panel e.g. Olabode George (NPA), and self confessed election riggers -- Chris Uba, Rafiu Tinubu are free and working for OBJ's 3rd term project.

This official attitude is not good enough for the opening of the political space. Citizens' right are encroached upon with impunity because of the political believes, association or expression of contrary views.

This census is a fraud, Waste of time and money.
I am not surprise at all.
Federal Govt. of Nigeria is always working toward the answer.
They know the census exercise will be a failure and there will be demonstrations all over the country. Maybe OBJ wants to use that to overstay in ASO ROCK.

One of the issue or amendment to be made to the new constitution is the scrapping of State Independent Electoral Commission, thus we will end up having one Federal Electoral Body (INEC).
Are we not going back to the old days of colonial masters/ Military Govt. -- Unitary Govt. Everything will be controlled and directed by the center.

Infact is INEC trully independent?

Do we ever learn from our past mistakes. the last (419) elections is good reference point, where name of candidates were substituted in Abuja without the Federal INEC commissioners in the States are bing informed, in most cases the Political party as well.

Why do these set of legislators want the Federal Govt. to control everything?
The general norm all over the world is to reduce the burden of the center and make the component states more responsible.

Chris. Uba, is the untouchable OBJ's son from the woman he met during the Biafra war.
OBJ got to know about him during the run up to 2003 (419) elections.
OBJ has already willed Anambra State to him as his own share of OBJ's properties.
A man without moral consience like is Father - OBJ.
A billionaire without any known business concern.

Let them give him Immunity so that he can go come 2007.
Their immunity is human and can not be divine.
Can they provide him immunity from Death and God. This is not possible.
So what is the stress.

Another Govt. and group of legislators will come and do the right thing: remove/ revoke the immunity. He will have to account for his stewardship. It is just a matter of time. It has happeded before and it will happen again. Remember the case of one of the southern Africa country, I can recollect precisely; was it Zambia -- K.K. Kaunda and Chiluba or the case of Chile with their former Head - Pinochet?? . Their immunity were remove after they left office.

So Govt. come Govt. Go, Nigeria still remain.

Just Let us ease OBJ out, since he is afraid of the future. Let him have immunity that can be remove later.

What Could Be The (Right) Estimated Population Of Lagos State

O yes, census has started in Nigeria. But what do you think could be the right estimated population of Lagos State, considering the daily inflow of people into the state?

C have being to Lagos on many occasions. Come and see crowds everywhere. Is it Ojota, Oshodi, Iyana Ipaja, Agege, Egbada, Ojuelegba, Yaba, Mile2, Mile 12, Ikorodu, Apapa/ TinCan, Ajegunle, Mushin, Oyingbo, Obalende, Falomo, Ogba, Ojodu-Berger, Lekki Axis, Festac e.t.c? Just name the place, you see crowd some running: some selling, some just walking. Na wa for Lagos People.

To my mind the population should not be less than 25 million.

How do I explain to our leaders of tomorrow that many of "the big men" they see on television are no better than armed robbers?

If performance were to be the sole basis for determining the tenure of any president or prime minister, there would be no elections in some countries. Life presidency especially outside of Africa would be the norm.

In Nigeria, you can rig elections and proclaim it to the president without fear of official sanction; you can hire assassins and commit murder; you can abduct innocent workers and receive money from the government in order to free your hostages; you can embezzle tax payers' money; you can appropriate or confiscate government property; you can engage in illegal oil bunkering; you can buy your admission into a high profile university and you can also buy your graduation from the same university. These are just some of the attributes of a country where the policy of "might is right" is respected by everyone

If I am to take JAMB again, I will still chose GREAT IFE.

IFE is the place where group classification is the least in all the Universities in Nigeria -- I have being to most of them. The physical and relationship difference btw the rich and poor is minimal.

When talk about physical structure -- Oduduwa Hall, Ajose Lect. Thearter, Engineering Faculty Building, Admin, Law and social science Faculty, the only Bukateria complex in the world, the sport center e.t.c. I love IFE.

AsIFE Graduate, you are always proud and bold to say it to the world. Although some of my friends call that arrogance. But it is just that you sure of the stuffs you have gotten from Ife.

I enter IFE in 1988 and finished 2004 (a year loss to BABAGIDA- ATTIRU JEGA ASSU strike) with Second class upper in Agric. But I am now a Cisco Certified Network Professional.
From Agric. now excelling in IT. That is just part of IFE training, where you have to take courses outside you major line.

As per the recent closure, i'm surprise becos IFE was never known for Religious intolerance. Infact for it to have happened in AWO HALL. I don't know what to say. Watching PORN is not illegal but in my mind it might be immoral. IFE is just that society where you can do anything provide it is illegal. It is a mature society and an avenue to interact with diff. type of people from diverse background. I once stayed in same room with a ElKISH, CROSS BEARER, ARISHINA and I enjoyed their company though we differed in our religious belief. I am a muslim.  If the school rules and regulations has nothing against watch adult film who are they,The TEBIKI or what do they called themselves to impose the will on others.They  should be dealt with according to the rules and regulation of the school. Infact the mosque in Awo Hall is not suppose to be there, but was allowed becos of the student convience seek.
