@Aboki: You seem to have comprehension problems or what? I was not at the scene, neither were you, when the accident happened so l will take it that we are both referring to the "eye-witness account" that was listed in the story, on page one, quoted below. I concur that some part of that bridge was 'bad' (like there is any part of Nigerian road that is very smooth! ). Now, this is a driver that drives public transport (and presumably undergo "special training" and is under higher expectations of "duty of care", compared to just any other private driver) and this is NOT his first day at work (No need to pretend on that) so he definitely must have passed that bad road before and knows it is there. The argument about "act of nature or unforeseen circumstance" does not hold water! That bridge did not become "bad" five minutes before he drove on it now! I have driven on Lagos Ibadan Express a few times and even l know where the road is bad ...and where to slow down to a crawl of say 50Km/H, even though l can do at least 120Km/H conveniently on that road. It is called "common sense and duty of care to myself and other road users". If l decide to "speed" over these dangers and turn-around to blame the "bad road", then l must be "this Aboki or some sort of very unintelligent being, like a mechanic"! (Pun not intended! )lottoe: Tragedy struck on Monday on the Funsho Williams Avenue bypass, Surulere, Lagos State, after a yet-to-be identified soldier was crushed to death by a LAGBUS, one of the buses in the state mass transit scheme.Questions: *Why would a Driver be ON TOP SPEED on a Bridge,.... not to mention top speed on a Bridge with "dilapidated portion"? [b]That is how they drive, RECKLESSLY! *Why was the Driver "striving to control" the Bus or why was the Bus "swerving dangerously"? Does that not tell you that "He COMPLETELY LOST CONTROL" of the Bus? HE was driving at a speed not commensurate with the danger (prevailing conditions) inherent on that bridge, at that time. * Other drivers have driven on that same "bad part of the bridge" before and after this accident... without crushing other vehicles or drivers. WHY HIM? Looking at the reported damage on the bridge, (This was a "gap on the two interlocking parts of the bridge), all you need do is slow down to get over it. WHY DID HE NOT SLOW DOWN? The same problem is on ALL our Bridges due to lack of proper maintenance, you just need to exercise more diligence and care. SLOW DOWN! I dont like arguing for "argument's sake" and your analogy of "Pilot" is simply silly! A pilot knows where and when he would encounter "turbulence" and takes evasive action immediately otherwise, every turbulence would have resulted in an air-crash! Gerrit? ![]() Even Pilots know when to "reduce speed" (or increase it) if they face certain "unusual, prevailing conditions" like turbulence! It is still part of his duty of "due diligence" and duty of care to their passengers and other aircrafts nearby!; Looking at the reported damage on the bridge, (This was a "gap on the two interlocking parts of the bridge), all you need do is slow down to get over it. WHY DID HE NOT SLOW DOWN? Well, try and run over a child on somewhere in Lagos ..and stand there to tell passers-by that "its not my fault, the child should have used the Pedestrian Bridge" .... and let us see if they wont treat you to a "necklace". I advanced climes,, l am definite that your "speed at that moment" and other factors like (where you drunk, was your brake alright, e.t.c) will be taken into consideration in deciding the length of your jail sentence, ....irrespective of whether the child should have used a Pedestrian bridge or a Zebra crossing. Even if you pass on all those counts (including that you were driving at a "common sense speed" at that point, you will still get a Driving ban, at the least.... and if you breach it, you still go to jail. ![]() Like l said earlier, l wont argue just for arguments sake. Am off. Lastpage! |

Mr Aboki: Well Said...@Aboki: You need to read the first post on this thread properly. There-in you will see that "the driver lost control of the vehicle". It is a Driver's "duty of care" to always be in control of the vehicle you're driving.: Irrespective of whether it is raining, there is pot-hole, Pedestrian crosses a major road, e.t.c., YOU the driver of a Vehicle is responsible for whatever damage your vehicle causes, due to LOSS OF CONTROL. End of story! Do you run over a child crossing a road (instead of using a Pedestrian bridge) and claim its not your fault? Why then are you called a "trained Driver" or do people just wake-up and start driving a vehicle? You should continue to reduce your speed to match the prevailing conditions. Note: Speed limits are "advisary".... You can go below it but you should NOT EXCEED IT. Accidents have happened at 180Km/H, at 100Km/h and even at 40Km/H before now, depending on the "prevailing conditions". If speed limit is 120Km/H on an express road, l bet you know you have to slow down to say 80Km/H if it is raining? .... and even 50Km/H, if the road has pot-holes and it is raining at the same time, huh? ![]() Road is bad is never an excuse for loosing control of your vehicle. ..... well in sane climates sha! ![]() |
Mr Aboki: Is a Bike supposed to be on that road for starters?!Dont mind them, blaming the Bridge for all the accidents. Granted, the Bridge is dilapidated but common sense should tell us that when you approach a dilapidated bridge, YOU SLOW DOWN. From the accounts given, the Bus was OVER-SPEEDING and the Driver could not control it. Period. The Okada Soldier was just on the side of the BUS when this happened and he pinned the Bike and its driver to the Railings, slicing him into two. l wish the Soldier was a lil-bit more cautious and give a wide-berth to those crazy drivers. Thats what l do whenever l see them nearby. The way these LAGBUS drivers started out, especially when thy had this "dedicated lane" was as if they are now Demons and will crush anything in their path! When you have AREA-BOYZ high of Sheepe and Opaa-eyin soaked in Warri Alcohol driving such long Vehicles, now that is a toxic and explosive mixture! My Sympathy goes to the family of that soldier. take dat: This has nothing to do with GEJ as it is a long held practice. Most countries colonized by Britain make payment to their retired colonial officers. The retired colonial officers were known as constitutional casualties. It was argued that Her Majesty's government was not the employer of these civil servants.
Does this shyt make sense to you? What kinda dead post did you type up here man?
Every Govt makes decisions in the best interest of its own citizen (Okay, not every Govt, if we consider Nigerian Govt! The Queen employed those people to serve her interest ...and did they do just that by plundering this country for decades? Now, 60years after independence, can we not MAKE LAWS IN THE INTEREST OF OUR OWN CITIZENS? Why do we have a National Assembly if they cannot examine EVERY Bilateral Agreements and MAKE FURTHER LAWS (which is their right and duty) to protect their own citizens? Just pass another law that will abrogate that initial one, end of story. Imagine if such laws is in America, wil she not quickly ask congress to abrogate it? Why should Nigeria still stick to a law that does not serve her national interest, in 2013 ....... if not that we have stewpid leaders who are concerned and directed only by selfish interest and corruption! Ama28: Why do you think that in Child Right Act 2003 a man alone cannot be allowed to adopt a baby girl. The same "warped thinking" that got us where we are today, where women, gradually over the years have used (taken advantage of their weak femininity) to SKEW laws and Regulations in their favor so much so it gone to the extreme left now. For example, a man is not allowed to put his name on the birth cert of his child if he and the mother were not married before the birth of that child and he has not single right over that child. Now, what would you call that? That LAW was REPEALED LAST YEAR! ... but it took decades to get to that last year! Gradually, "the system" is waking-up to what women are doing (up to) in a man-woman relationship. I guess women have been treated so badly in the past, thus the need to enact these one-sided draconian laws in their favor but the situation has gone full circle NOW. Men are now the endangered specie in most relationships. TRUTH .....like it should be told. Lastpage! |

Its good you have identified that it is doing you harm.... adjusting is the next stage. Another thing is to tell your Pal (if you find it difficult to drop the phrase) that he should take note: If l say it is over when l am angry with you, dont take it literally.... The moment they start, Petrol cars will become "problematic" in Nigeria, to Nigerians. So you saying Nigerians are stewpid and just do 'follow-follow' ? C'mmon, that is a very silly and self-denigrating opinion. Diesel vehicles are still comparatively noisy (reason l hate them) and they are "slow to pick-up speed from zero", .....compared to a petrol engine. Its a no-brainer really and l am surprised you cant figure that out.
has published an absurd article about a graduate university student who claims he’s “used science to prove that gay marriage is improper”. The newspaper reports that University of Lagos post graduate student Chibuihem Amalaha has made “many discoveries and inventions” in science and technology. Now, he’s turning his efforts to the issue of gay marriage. “In recent time I found that gay marriage, which is homosexuality and lesbianism, is eating deep into the fabric of our human nature all over the world and this was why nations of Sodom and Gomora were destroyed by God because they were into gay practice. That is, a man marrying another man and a woman marrying another woman,” says Amalaha. He explains that “God gave me the wisdom to use science as a scientist to prove gay marriage wrong”. Amalaha says that his ‘groundbreaking’ experiments have shown that the north and south poles of two magnets are attracted to each other while same poles repel each other. He concludes that this “means that man cannot attract another man because they are the same, and a woman should not attract a woman because they are the same. That is how I used physics to prove gay marriage wrong”. His other high-school standard experiments include showing that negative ions are attracted to positive ones in the process of electrolysis. “That is what electrolysis is showing us, that gay marriage is wrong in the area of chemistry,” he states. Despite massive evidence that homosexuality is all too common in nature, Amalaha further insists that biology also indicates that same-sex attraction is unnatural. “We have seen that the female of a fowl is called hen and the male of a fowl is called a cock. We have never seen where a cock is having sex with a cock and we have never seen where a hen is having sex with another,” the learned man states. Amalaha claims that he’s the first person in the world to scientifically show that same-sex marriage is wrong, adding “In general, same sex marriage is evil. It should be stopped by those practicing it”. Disturbingly, his “discoveries” have been backed by Dr. Henry Boyo at the Department of Physics at the University of Lagos. He said: “You can quote me anywhere, the guy’s concept is germane and it has been scientifically proven to be true.” It’s debatable as to whether the embarrassing article is more damming of the standard of education at the University of Lagos or of the standard of journalism at This Day. The uncritical and uninformed article is likely to add to the ignorance and prejudice surrounding homosexuality in Nigeria. Current legislation punishes homosexual acts with up to 14 years’ imprisonment, or death by stoning in northern regions of the country. President Goodluck Jonathan has yet to sign a law passed in parliament in May that will jail anyone involved in same-sex marriage ceremonies (including the guests), anyone showing same-sex affection and anyone who does not turn in gay people to the authorities. Amalaha plans to have his “work” published in international journals and is intent on winning the Nobel Prize in science. We wish him the best of luck
Honestly, my intention was just to correct the impression created by one poster equating a bricklayer to an University trained Engineer, l never bothered to dig into what that "Prof" Chibuihem Amalaha "proved"! I now went to read the article and lo and behold, l am convinced that it is not only that useless "Engineer" that is to blame but even Thisday newspapers and its Editor must be products of same failed education! Just imagine, a simple rhetoric like "Like-Poles repel" has suddenly become a Scientific research and invention! Even chickens are not left out! ![]() He even wants to win Nobel prize? cold: Disturbingly, his “discoveries” have been backed by Dr. Henry Boyo at the Department of Physics at the University of Lagos. He said: “You can quote me anywhere, the guy’s concept is germane and it has been scientifically proven to be truesorry, "Boyo" is NOT i "his department" as you claimed. "Boyo" is in Physics Dept while this guy is doing a PGD in the Dept of Chemical Engineering, a stone throw away from the Faculty of Science. Even at that, can we have a "link" to where Boyo claimed his concept is "proven scientifically"? Thanks. Lastpage! |
Now, let me address and explain the Unilag rebuttal openly: *The guy involved graduated as an "Educationist" (a Secondary school Teacher), specializing in teaching chemistry. (B.Sc Edu) *He had aspiration of becoming a Chemical Engineer in the future thus he opted for the "conversion program" (PGD) which would allow him to take some courses that he could not have taken in his Bachelors degree days since he wasn't in the department of Chemical Engineering. Its a year long program and very packed. Now, as a PGD student of Unilag, this chap made a write-Up in which he made so many "unsubstantiated, unverified and unresearched claims" ......and "signed-off" on it as "Dept of Chemical Engineering, Unilag". He gave the impression that UNILAG took part, verified and endorsed his claims! ![]() Now, that is a very giant leap for a "Chemistry teacher, doing a PGD"! His intention was to cash-in on the status of Unilag (l suspect that is why he actually enrolled for the PGD course!) and make it appear like his publication was researched and vetted and peer-reviewed at, and by UNILAG Dons! What a load of rubbish? Unilag, being the citadel of learning it is, only came out to issue a disclaimer and to set the records straight. They said "You cannot attach our name to a "publication" which have not been put to the test, as required by all academic research standards. That dolt is not even doing a proper "Masters Degree" where he would be required to do proper empirical research! If he is sure of his publication, he should then submit it to Unilag (or any University) for REVIEW by Doctoral students and Professors. Every idiot cannot just jump up anywhere, rush to a Newspaper and claim to have the cure for HIV and not put their "solution" through rigorous test/research and analysis. If drugs where made that way, we would all end-up as Guinea-Pigs, for testing-testing! ...even though that is a common phenomenon in Nigeria of today. Any claim, no matter how high-sounding it is, without any research and peer-review to back it up, is nothing more than a postulation..... which my gate-man is also capable of making. Well, l understand that poorly educated folks like to ridicule people with sound education, since it is a mountainous challenge for them. I understand that. ![]() Lastpage! |
UNILAG: The University of Lagos writes to dissociate itself in its entirety from the actions, publications and research of this individual. We further state, for the avoidance of doubt, that his publication has nothing to do with his programme and has no relationship to his studentship of the University. Indeed our postgraduate diploma students ordinarily only take conversion courses to improve their capability for the chosen specialization and do not undertake research. The case of the writer who has a background in Education (Chemistry) is not different. shortgun: So what are they sayingThe fact that you confirm that you DONT UNDERSTAND AND CANT MAKE SENSE OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, is an indictment and an indication that you are a poorly educated fella with very low intelligence, if any at all! That rebuttal was written in the simplest of English! You asked a very foolish question using the road-side mechanic/bricklayer and carpenter analogy. You are one of those reasons this country is backward, people like you think "Copper and Gold" are the same thing simply because they are both "metals"! ![]() For your education, bricklayers, road-side mechanics, and their "level" have their place in every society. They are called "Artisans". They fulfill a very important role in all societies and are not to be despised BUT please, understand that they are very different from Professional Engineers, Architects, Builders, Scientists, e.t.c. I know you dont know the difference between them (from what you wrote) but let me inform you that there is a different role for Engineers (University trained) and say, a Mechanic. In the world of science, there is what is called SPECIALIZATION, which breeds efficiency!. Despite their difference (which l will explain to you soon), they work together and compliment each other. The job of a University trained Engineer IS NOT to go under a vehicle to change the fuel pump or drain the Oil just like it is not the job of a University trained Architect to carry the bricklayers 'knife' and lay bricks or mix cement with sand! Their JOB IS TO DESIGN. They design to specification, as required. They work mostly with their brains (not hands) and put their ideas on paper! That is why they are called RESEARCHERS The bricklayers/Road-side mechanic's job is to "BUILD" .... (based on the design they are given by a trained and professional Engineer/Architect) using their hands and legs. Their job is mostly "physical" as opposed to "mental", for an Engineer. If all the world's Engineers spent all their time doing repetitive and mundane jobs like "Artisans", the world will still be stuck in the age of Abacus machine and Donkey-ride travel. Next time, please get a good University Education but if you cant (for intelligence or other reasons) be a good Artisan and stick to your end of the bargain. Dont be a road-side mechanic or bricklayer and call yourself "Engineer"! ![]() Lastpage! |
adeokunade: does it mean that if you have son, you can allow the boy to be wearing necklace.@adeokunade: There is a world of difference between "a BOY' .... and "a MAN". Just likel would not expect to find a Condom in the wallet or wardrobe of "a boy"...... but perfectly responsible if he were "a MAN", as in a grown man. As for a Necklace, its an "adornment" ... something that is used to enhance one's beauty! And who says it is only women that need adornment? I guess l am not the only one that noticed that majority of women will condemn a man using a necklace (though the same people will agree if makes women look good!) since they are under the wrong impression that it is only women that are supposed to look good. After-all, if a man looks too dashing, he might just become the subject of more than "one female's attention" (and women dont like competition at all )Shoes, nice shirt, sun-shades, well-cut pants/trousers, wristwatch, perfumes, just to mention a few, all fall into the same category of "adornment" that makes us look good ... and it is not meant to be exclusive to women alone. Now, dont get me wrong, "MEN" must do it in moderation" ..... as they have other means of adorning themselves (like good shape, lovely biceps, no pot-belly, clear skin, clean smell, e.t.c) ![]() ****Puts on a nice boot-cut Jeans, tops a Big boy T-Shirt and a Necklace, jumps into sneakers and sprays a sweet perf, time to go.... . . ......go meet Madam in the next room**** ![]() Lastpage! |
25Calibre: Female children are headaches, the task of raising daughters is just monumental.I humbly disagree with you. I have male and female children and l can tell you that Female children tend to be very close to their Dad ... than their Male counterpart. My Female Queens will make their Husband to be, very jealous, with the way we relate (I hope it never happens l have a wife who does not trust my integrity, with my own children! Tufiakwa!!). Male children on the other hand, get "very assertive early in life" and this can lead to a straining of their relationship with their Dad. Just my experience. Author: My daughter told me that daddy did not want her sister and herself to go out because he was having sex with both of them. I thought I didn’t hear her well. I asked her to repeat what she said, she repeated herself again and asked me to confirm from her sister. As with me, l see beyond the surface, in "stories" like this. It is likely fabricated BUT trust me, a lot of situations like this, exist in real life. I try to "learn the lesson" from such events even if it may not be true that this one really happened. I have highlighted a few lines which l want ALL OF US TO REFLECT ON.... because "You never know"..... . And adage says "The wise one uses the calamity of others, for his own wise counsel"! 1.) Having sex with your blood relation is taboo, not to talk of your own blood-children! For this children to make this allegation, something serious must have happened (The father either did it or something made the children to manufacture it!) 2.) The father had already told his own wife, their mother, that he "grounded them for misbehavior" ... and he denied this event ever happened. Question: Why would a woman, a wife and mother decide not to believe her husband (knowing that he does not have such an antecedent before now) and instead believe the children? 3.) She confessed that her husband "was hurt" that she did not believe him. If we reverse the roles and it was "Mummy' that was alleged to be handling her Boy-son, would she expect the Husband to believe that son over her own denial? Honestly speaking, if l ask: in this type of situation, will most men not just "slap the son and tell him to shut-up, rather believing their wife" ..... while most women will believe their daughters over their husband? Why is that so? 4.) She packed "her children" and left! This makes me wonder, in most cases when there is a "family breakdown", the first thing that enters a woman's head is to "take the children away" or separate the father from the children (even if the problem was between her and the husband only!). Why is this so? Is this supposed to be a psychological and emotional punishment for the husband? Do women "think twice" or do they 'pause and slow down' or at times think and say "what if l am wrong"? 5.) She said "I raised my children alone, l dont want them to have anything to do with their father". I am wondering (and l may be wrong), do women like to take credit for raising the children alone? I mean, do they think its a thing of joy, something to be proud of, if they prevent the father from playing his natural fatherly role and "raise the children alone" While it is NOT in all cases, children raised by a single parent (father or mother) definitely have a "latent deficient personality" lurking under the surface! There is a reason we are supposed to have "father and mother" as each one contributes a different part to our conception, nurturing and eventual personality. 6.) Finally, the "innocent man" has been destroyed beyond redemption. Is there a lesson for ALL OF US to learn in this story ...or do we just read it and laugh it off? *Have you taken decisions that destroyed someone else's life... without thinking twice? *Have you decided "rashly", where you could have used "wisdom" ... and "let time soak-up a problem so it could be easier to manage"? *Do you trust your partner completely and would stand up for him or her (except concrete, hard evidence proves otherwise) irrespective of what other think? *Do we all realize that there are "some road" we should never traverse ... and some "rivers we should never cross" in our family relationship? *Do we realize that on some issues, they are like "eggs", once broken, can never be mended together again. Do we "take a breath and pause wella-wella" on such issues? - While blame those children, l blame the Mother even more. She is an adult and is expected to be more discerning (but then what do l expect when even her (the mother) said her husband recent good fortune could be attributed to him sleeping with his own daughters!). - She was also the one that 'acted' on this information by tearing the family apart. She was also the one that refused to listen to the pleadings of this innocent man, (her own husband who looked after the family in her absence!). - I dont want to speculate but l can just imagine what she must have told all those friends of the man, that quickly dissociated from him, after this incident. How come she did not even take into account, her husband's "previous good deeds" as a father and husband? How did she forget so easily, over an unproven allegation? Well such is life. Let us be guided, going forward. Lastpage! |
