Business › Re: CBN Forex Guidelines Explained By Tim Harford by lastpage: 7:25am On Oct 05, 2013
darqly: @Lastpage, GTbank ceased selling forex to customers when it launched it's Naira mastercard, so I'd be mighty surprised if your friend had purchased same from them RECENTLY. In the past, he'd need not fund his domicilliary account to pay for "Invisible goods" or fees as the bank would just take the naira equivalent and render the payment on his behalf in the stipulated currency.
Now, this is what l call comparing "Apples & Oranges"!
a) He was not paying for "invisible goods" as you put. Read my post again, ...he was paying for "Equipments", ....Excavator, Digger and a JCB to be precise.

b) He has a GTB Master Card. I have one too and we use it to "do shopping" when we travel outside.
Are you by any stretch of imagination implying that he pays for a JCB or Digger with a GTB Master card?
I am talking about over 500,000 Pounds! Master "Debit" card is meant for small purchases, not importation of Equipments.
Such is done by "forex transfer" through a bank.

darqly: Secondly and more importantly, in case you missed it in the detailed extract by the original poster, the bank buys forex on behalf of BDCs, to which the "Mallam" probably represents or OWNS!
I think you're actually "missing it" big time. Re-read my post again.
A Bank is a bank, a BDC is a BDC!
BDC "sells" forex while a Bank "bids" for forex on behalf of customers.

You dont "operate a BDC" INSIDE a bank. We are not all totally naive not to know the difference now?

A bank can bid for forex "on behalf" of a BDC in which case, it will pass the forex to the BDC for it to do as it wishes, in its own office.
The same way, the bank buys forex on behalf of its "public customers" to FUND THEIR PURCHASES overseas, within the banking system.

Both are not the same thing but both are covered within CBN forex rules. (Even this as much is stated in the Op's post, read it again.

Dont offer opinion on what you dont have a clue about. Silence they say, is "golden"

I have discussed this issue with "seasoned bankers" and the trend of "informed opinion" is that it was wrong and against CBN rules.
They actually gave me a list of banks which have been in the past over this, at various times.

Google is your friend, type "Round tripping" and catch up on some reading.

darqly: The bank could have told you politely that they don't sell forex and ces't fini. Your friend would probably get disgruntled, rant abit, blame EVERYONE else and that would be that.
TRAGICALLY, they offered you guys a lifeline, which you now see as a scam(rightly or wrongly...this one's for the judge), in order to complete the transaction. The perils of customer service.... grin
This rubbish can not be dignified with an answer, and that is putting it lightly.

Business › Re: CBN Forex Guidelines Explained By Tim Harford by lastpage: 6:43pm On Oct 04, 2013
ogogoro: WDAS means Wholesale Dutch Auction System. A bank will collect requests from its customers who want to purchase forex. It will then take the total amount to the auction where CBN will sell the forex to them. For example, 100 customers of a bank might say they want $100,000 each. The bank will then go to the auction hoping to buy $10m from CBN. But CBN used to sell a certain amount of money every week and there would be plenty banks competing (with their customers’ requests) competing for the forex on offer by CBN.

So the only way for CBN to sell the forex is through an auction system. It will offer the money at a certain price say N160 to $1 and anyone who wants to buy at that amount will buy or it will reduce its asking price to N158. Until all the money on offer is sold. The auction holds every week and the CBN announces how much it will be selling in advance. For example, the CBN offered $400m in the last auction in September

Notice the name is ‘Wholesale’? It is not an open market where anyone can come and buy. So only banks are allowed to come and buy on behalf of their clients.

So why are they changing it and to what?

The new system is RDAS – Retail Dutch Auction System. CBN is worried that the demand for forex is being driven by ‘fake’ economic activity especially money laundering and politicking. The RDAS is similar to the WDAS but now banks will have to ‘show their workings’ i.e. they will have to show the details of the person on whose behalf they are ordering the forex. In short, CBN will be collecting more information to enable it monitor what exactly is going on. In short it is tightening the rules on how forex can be bought.

E remain one more change abi how many we don talk now?

I am sure he sends you money through Western Union and you collect it in dollars? Now CBN has said you can no longer do that. When you receive money through Western Union or Moneygram or any other such service, you will only be able to collect the money in Naira. Previously, people would collect the amount in dollars and go and change it at a better rate by themselves on the black market.

[Tears Shirt] Say wetin happen?? The banks will now use this as an opportunity to cheat me! This Sanusi sef, na everything the guy see e go squeeze? Wetin we do am?

The CBN says its Consumer Protection Department will make sure people are not cheated by banks but we wait to see how this works.
Thanks for your breakdown. I hope it helps some people.

Has ANYONE gone to the bank to "BUY" Forex? ...say to pay for something? What response did they tell you?

Well, my friend has a Domiciliary accounts in "major currencies" in addition to Naira accounts thinking he can just BUY FOREX fro his bank and use it to pay (by Bank to Bank Transfer) for his purchases from 'abroad'.

He has maintained and funded his Naira account for some time now but the day he needed to buy some equipments from the U.K and needed to transfer GBP to the company's account in the U.K. he got a shocker!

We went to the bank together and he requested that they pay the U.K Company' s Bank (he has all the necessary Bank details of the U.K company with him) and then deduct the corresponding amount (using the bank's exchange rate) from his Naira account.

It was supposed to be a simple transaction. He showed them "PROOF" of the legitimacy of the equipments he was buying.

Well, not so simple!
The Bank (GTBank, but its virtually all of them doing this scam!) told him "We dont SELL FOREX".
My Cousin said he was not buying (as in collecting physical GBP cash but wants to "pay for goods" and its a direct transfer).

She went away, consulted Head of Forex, then consulted the Branch Manager and later they say they want to consult Head office in V.I, as my cousin sef no easy! angry angry

He wanted to know why he, as a legitimate customer, with a Dorm account cannot get service as advertised and sanctioned by the CBN.

To his surprise, one of the staff asked him to speak with a "RESIDENT ALHAJI FOREX DEALER" who hangs around inside the bank doing brisk business.

of course, the bank did advertise its :exchange rate" on a Notice Board on its wall (which is the official rate) but it is significant to note that that rate was far much more lower (You get more forex for your Naira or you pay less Naira for the same amount of forex) that what "Mallam" will give you.... within the same bank!

Eventually, they flatly refused to do the transaction for my cousin. They said "We dont sell forex to customers".
They called the Mallam and asked him to do business with him as it is still within the bank and they can guarantee that he does not even need to handle the cash: Just pay the "Mallam" the naira equivalent and we will do the rest, they told him. They said he should authorise a Niara transfer to the Mallam's GTB account for the equivalent amount.

As all these was going on, as an observer, l knew the SCAM that they were up to.
So, l took my phone and l started to record everything in VIDEO.
You will see their faces and that of the Mallam and all the "negotiations" as it was going-on inside the bank floor and how they were directing "forex customers" to this Mallam.

They simply collect Forex from CBN at a lower "official rate" and take it out of the banking system to sell outside, using the Mallams, to gain more money, depriving their official customers the benefit for which CBN sets-up this procedure.
It is called "ROUND -TRIPPING" and it is a form of SCAM/bank Fraud!

I am waiting for the opportuned time (on advice from my cousin who felt these criminals cold endanger his life just to protect their SCAM) ...to put the video on air at one of the foreign (or Channels TV) media..... and copy SANUSI himself.

The CBN Governor MUST ensure that banks are sanctioned heavily for refusing to perform their financial responsibility to the customer and for committing financial fraud, which is what ROUND-TRIPPING IS! There should be "jail time" for the head of forex (and l hear it goes all the way to the M.D) and everyone involved in this type of financial fraud

Even if CBN enacts 100-rules and dont want to, or cant or deliberately avoid enforcing them, its all rubbish.

I was really disappointed in GTBank but l understand its the same with ALL Nigerian banks, that is where they make most of their illicit money from.

eaglechild: CNN and BBC world are news channels, that focus almost exclusively on news and topical issues.
STV, NTA (not heard of TVC) are regular TV stations with a variety of scheduled programmes ranging from news to music, sports etc.
While they may provide detailed coverage of the event during their news session, they still have to keep to their schedule.
Channels is the one of the stations I think leans towards a news station.
You do not expect Super Sport 3 to start showing you a plane crash scene even if it's in South Africa.
Critical thinking and knowledge is what we need to forge along not sentiments.
My friend, you are off-mark!
There is something they call "Breaking News".
When such important events occur (like when 9/11 occurred), especially for TV stations within the domiciled country, they have a duty to "inform' their viewers, even if just by "flashing it for 30-seconds".

What you wrote up there are not genuine excuses at all.
Thing is these stations cant afford (or dont want to pay) "correspondents and Reporters" (people on ground) who should have gone to the site and using correct equipment, beam it live to their TV station.

It is just our mediocre way of doing things.

Davo93: Agagu is neither my family member nor those involved but i am from Ondo state. I have been bursting into tears all day as i read news as regards this crash.

For those saying this is nemesis, i still can't understand the type of heartless creature you are. Is that how wicked your own God can be?? And are you holier than those people? If not, i don't want to pray you experience thesame.

This is absolutely a hard moment for we Ondo State people. A lot of us were already at the Democracy Park in Akure awaiting the arrival of the corpse before the news of this disaster came in.

I pray that God heal the survivors of this crash quickly, grant the family of the dead the fortitude to bear the loss and that my good God should help us lower the hands of evil in my dear country. crycry
This has nadda to do with God!
While l sympathize with the dead and their loved ones left behind ... and l can under stand your own position as well, have you ...and could you ponder on these questions:

1.) Why do we have these incessant crashes of airplanes in Nigeria? As Aviation Minister, what did the deceased "do or not do" to tackle the problem? Mind you, Nigeria is not the only country where aeroplanes fly! Did he improve aviation facilities or embezzle the funds meant for it?

2.) Since the Agagu himself was dead before this accident, why do they have to "fly deadi-bodi" from Lagos to Akure, chattering two planes?

3.) At what cost is that charter exercise, for a journey of less than 3hrs? Is this another show of opulence or what?

4.) Why did they not at least, use an Ambulance to transport the dead bodi to his home town? Is it that they dont trust our roads at all and if that is the case, what is in it for the poor folks who cannot afford to charter an aeroplane?

5.) I want you to refer to another thread on this Nairaland, which was opened the day Agagu himself passed-on and read what people wrote about his "activities" while alive and even as a Government officer/politician.

My point is that this type of incident should always be a "learning experience" for those entrusted with authority, who are still alive!

It is very sad when those in power, trusted with authority and our collective wealth, refuse to do what they are supposed to do (like repair our roads but instead opted to be buying "24-inches tyres" Off-road vehicles...and later graduated to buying private jets when even 4x4 vehicles could not overcome the big craters on the roads!).

I do not blame the poor folks who seem to rejoice when any of their "oppressors" pass-on in such shambolic manner, the masses are just taking their own pound of flesh. Its just human nature
I bet if the roads where "good and safe", they would have travelled by road (or at least some of the passengers) and we may not be counting so much dead bodies.

May God in his infinite mercy, console the living and give respite to the soul of the dead.

Sagamite: Out of context?

Oya let me quote verbatim: "I think the coach of Malawi is crazy. If he wants to talk to FIFA, he should go back to Belgium. He is not an African person, he is a white dude, he should go back to Belgium".

How is that out of context?
I still dont get it when people take offense for being called what they OBVIOUSLY ARE..... except there is a context to it.

I have had situations where white folks who dont know my name or are meeting me for the first time, called me "black man" and then begin to apologize for calling me a 'black man' (though l am not actually black, but brownish but l do understand the generalization).
I just tell them you dont need to apologize for anything, I AM A BLACK MAN! .....except you want to tell me that you say so with a derogatory intention or in such context.

Calling someone a "white dude or black dude" is CERTAINLY NOT RACIST. Lets be clear about that and get it out of the way.

Now, asking someone to "go back to his country" (whether white or black) does not necessarily have to be classed as racist; depending on the context.

In Keshi's case, (l suspect) Keshi was just trying to infer that the Malawian coach was mis-informed by saying Calabar was unsafe (and even he himself admitted to this, later) ....and cannot know Africa/Nigeria more than him (Keshi) but should go back to Belgium if he wanted to be or speak 'authoritatively' on "security/safety of Calabar as a football venue" (thus the emphasis on going back to Belgium )

-What that statement insultive? YES.
- What the statement 'racist'? NO ..... and this was carefully examined and AFFIRMED by FIFA, which has 'experienced and dealt with a lot of such matters'.

We need to be careful not to lump every form of dissent or burst of anger under racism. It might just get to a point when you cant even express yourself at all less you be accused of racism.

Christianity Etc › Re: The Distorted Message Of Grace That We Preach by lastpage: 12:50am On Oct 02, 2013
@Op: I will say "Grace" is an 'Unmerited favor" bestowed upon us by God, knowing that we are imperfect and can never achieve perfection in whatever we do, no matter how much we try since sin is inherent in our personality, through "inheritance" from Adam. It is by Grace that we are even fit to call ourselves the children of God and God, through His Grace, is willing to overlook a lot of our shortcomings in as much as he sees the "intention to do good" (even if we fail whilst trying) in our heart.

This is my "general understanding" of that word but l hasten to add that even though we live "under His Grace", we cannot use it as an excuse to live in sin.
The Bible urges us as Christians, to be FREE (by His 'GRACE', even as we are sinners) but not to use our FREEDOM to commit sin.

The phrase "Gospel of Grace of God" should not be interpreted literally the way we interpret "Gospel" to mean 'Ministry or Church'!

The use of the Adverb "Gospel' in that phrase is just to illustrate or qualify the word "Grace" as a form of "Idea, method, procedure or means"

Where it was used in Acts 20:24, the Apostle was emphasizing that "He, though not qualified, but by the "Grace of God" (read: unqualified-for or unmerited mercy of God) now occupies the position of an Apostle and a child of God, opportuned to spread the good news and he is now "testifying" that he does not consider his own life as belonging to him, any longer, but to God through whose "Grace" he is preaching the Gospel and does not care if he loses his life in the process "after-all, his life and himself, was already lost but by that unmerited favor called GRACE, he is now saved' ......Not by his 'good works' but just because God decided to show him (and anyone who believes) such favor.

Now, can we start to build a "Ministry" on such words and/or in the process, start to 'CLAIM' that it gives us the liberty to shun responsibility for our actions and detach ourselves from the repercussions of our actions? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

"Grace" is a God-established "insurance" (so to speak) for those who WILL NEED IT, available to be tapped-into by all, when we give our life to Christ, show contrite for our deeds and sinful ways and make-up our mind to walk in the ways of the Lord.
Note: To tap-into that "Grace", though not by "works perse" and being unmerited, we still need to show "contrite in our heart" and be ready to follow-through on the necessary pathway to salvation otherwise, that same Grace will vamoose just as it came upon us.

This is how l see and understand it. (without trying to befuddle anyone or myself in "Biblically-legal" jargon)

Candour: @idnoble

Pls ponder on this small write up and give yourself answers in your mind

Some things not written expressly in scripture but which can be stated without fear of contradiction based on old testament history and laws

1. Jesus would NEVER have received tithes when he was on earth because he was not from the tribe of Levi.

2. The apostles would NEVER have received tithes because non was a Levite or serving at the Temple.

They all knew what the law says. Remember the law was in full operation then and the Levitical priesthood was in charge. I can confidently say here that if they had tried collecting tithes from any body, the Jews whould have STONED THEM TO DEATH because it would have been Sacrilege.

DO YOU AGREE WITH THE ABOVE?

The question now comes, how could the early Christians have paid tithe? who would they have paid it to?

Catholic history records tithe as being resurrected at a council in Tours(567AD) and Macon(585AD). Does it mean that all the Christians who lived in that span of over 500 years all sinned and are going to hell?

idnoble, what do you think?
Even more importantly, How do these current day Pastors "Qualify to be Levites"?
*Dont they have inheritance? (Most of them have more money than the whole church members combined!)
*Most have "business" (established ofcourse with church money) that rake-in money for them

I tell you, these people are pimps and fraudsters!

Only that God's judgement is relatively SLOW! ..Otherwise......
But the "members" need to SHINE-YOUR-EYE!

The pastor cannot and should not be getting "fatter" while his members get "thinner".
No be so e be with Jesus o, he was just like his followers so much so it took the "kiss of death" to identify him among his followers for him to be arrested.

Can we say the same of our Pastors today?

I know you were just joking.

Actually, the blood is under pressure (the heart is like a pressure pump) as it needs that pressure to force the blood round the whole body, through the arteries.

As an analogy, if you puncture a tyre using a small nail, the air just rushes out as the puncture serves as a "pressure-release" vent. wink

I wish l can still get the picture l took, the day l nearly killed myself!
I was doing DIY trying to replace the bad Washing Machine with another l just bought. (No be say l dey do Ijebu o, l just like hands-on! grin )
Anyway, the jagged edge of the Tiles l broke on the wall., cut the veins behind my hand, just between my fingers and my wrist (those veins that go to the fingers).
I was the only one at home and l was shocked at the way my blood wash just shooting out like fountain!
My initial thinking was to "not waste my blood" so l put the wound into my mouth, sucking the blood! grin grin
Before l could cough, my whole mouth was full of blood. Then l decided it was too much to swallow so l got a bowl to collect more blood.

The damn blood was still gushing and small bowl was almost full ...then it hit me that l was actually dying quietly, bit by bit!.

I guess "survival mode" just kicked-in there and then.
I located the exact point of the gash. Boy, was it was very ugly to look at?, l pressed a cloth to it but the cloth was soon soaked in blood and dripping!

Fear come begin dance Azonto in my head.
I imagined l would slump and die in the hallway there and one of my household members will come back in the evening and shout: Daddy where are you? (I know who that would be anyway)....and would then shout:Help! help.. after giving me a few kicks to the back thinking l was just being my usual clown and playing "dead"!)

I was convinced that "life and death is premised on my stopping that blood flowing".
p of
I got this wide Cellotape at home (about two inches wide) and wrapped it around the palm, covering the gash. (impermeable as it were)
I then used my left thumb to savagely press on the top of the vein, through the wrap of Cellotape (just a centimeter above the wound, as l could see the vein clearly).
I pressed so hard the hand went numb and dead after a few minutes!
The blood subsided as it just could not find any way out anymore.

I held unto it and drove myself to the hospital (Thank god car was 'auto-gear' and l could do everything with one hand and one leg while still using it to press on the wound. I did not want to cause a commotion with neighbours so everything was done quietly).

When l got to the hospital, they took almost one hour to attend to me. (I was just smiling to myself and thinking: Thank god you did not put your faith in these ones, you will be dead and just a lump of flesh on that slab, by now!)

Okay, one very young Doctor was willing to help me attend to the wound but the Senior Nurse was just glaring at him and the Doctor confided that it was not their job to attend to such wounds and that the Nurse whose duty it was, has closed and a new one has not taken her place! Said he will be reported if he tried to help, as much as he would loved to.
I am like who gives a phuck whose job it is, l just want to be attended to, before l die!

Finally, one Nurse came and took a look at the wound, after asking me to remove all my "DIY bandages"!
She said, there is NO BLOOD FLOWING so this does not qualify as an emergency!

I told her l was lucky the blood stopped and that it is over an hour the incident happened but l want it checked out since l may have cut the vein and the hand could end up useless. She just ignored me and walked away.
Well, it so happens that this "Government Hospital" was the closest to my house, about 8-10 minutes drive.

I took one good look at my injury and decided that if l was till alive by now and over the last one hour, these Eediots wont make any difference.
I tore-up the registration Card (which l paid for), and drove back home.

I called a baby Doctor of mine to come over after explaining that l want to buy some antibiotics and need him to write a prescription for me.

I took pictures of my own "Bowl of Blood" and kept it as a souvenir! grin grin

So, Pressure on such wound, as told by the Poster, could me a difference between life and death.
Blood means life, keep it inside and you could keep life inside.
Internal bleeding is another story anyway.
I know the Bible.. Not as well as I know the Quran, but ask for the Bible, I know..

Point is that the bible cant keep contradicting itself from one page to the next.. I will accept that Jesus raised dead peoples.. I will accept because everything about Jesus is unbelievable.. From his conception to his death to his rising all defy explanation.. So I will leave his matter as he is the Son of God. But what about the ones that humans are doing today?!

Its easy to claim that a Pastor raised a dead person, but the Pastors cant seem to path seas, walk on water, make axes float, get swallowed by Whales and spat out, be resistant to snake venom or even change water to wine.

I insist that he wasnt dead.. If God|Christians wants to impress me, he|They should try raising a deadbody that has been embalmed... Until then, my take is that his body was in a state of psuedo death that fooled even doctors.

Am also backing you here!

I keep telling people, Why cant ANY of these "Dead-Raising" or "Miracle-Performing" Pastors go to LUTH or IGBOBI Orthopaedic Hospital and RAISE THE DEAD ......or MAKE THE CRIPPLED WALK? wink wink

How come their miracles only happens @CRUSADES and the beneficiary is ALWAYS SOMEONE UNKNOWN!
What about the Crippled person on that NEXT STREET that EVERYONE KNOWS IS CRIPPLED IN THE LAST TEN YEARS?
huh huh

Why not do us a favor and raise Michael Jackson from the dead?
How about raising General Muritala Muhammed or Tunde Idiagbon (Past Leaders) from the dead, at least Nigeria would be better for it, in the long run?

Bloody scammers and pimps. tongue tongue

OLAADEGBU: Doctor Prays Over Dead Patient, Raises Him From the Dead

After suffering a massive heart attack, Jeff Markin was dead in the ER. Doctors had done everything they could but decided there was nothing more they could do. As he was leaving the room, cardiologist Chauncey Crandall received a clear message from the Lord to pray over Jeff. Miraculously, doctors were able to revive the dead patient after Dr. Crandall’s prayer. See how Jeff is doing today!

@the bolded: When peeps make this assertion, they expect everyone to just swallow it like that, hook, line and sinker!

Pray me,.... HOW did God communicate with him?
Telex? Telephone? E-mail? BBM/ Whassap? Viber? Skype? Voicemail? JUST HOW EXACTLY?

It is this same "scam" that Pastors use to dupe church members by CLAIMING God spoke to them.

.....And if you dare question them (like any rational person should do), you are labelled "the Devil"! grin

Am not even questioning the authenticity of this particular event (whether the heart of the man simply kicked-back to action, using latent electrical impulses, e.t.c) ...but to make that outlandish claim that it was God that SPOKE to Him! shocked shocked

Perhaps they can start by telling us HOW GOD'S VOICE SOUND LIKE, huh?

We are 'humans' and we all have instincts and impulses to "do something" but to now attribute it to God speaking to you is the height of DECEIT!

Okay, i understand, those who make this claim put themselves on a kind of "HIGHER PEDESTAL" that everyone around them.

****Winks **winks***winks***

Relax.... dont blame me for what l wrote, it was "Gwuawd" that was speaking to me! shocked shocked grin grin grin grin

Delivered of WHAT?

***A Baby?

Since he is a "Male", l will discount the 'baby' angle (except he was carrying the pregnancy on behalf of his wife grin )

Anyway, l never knew he was carrying "demons" all this while.

Now that he is "delivered" ... What should we expect to see?

Is he going to become a "funky Pastor" or a "Rocket Scientist" huh huh grin grin

kokoA: you think everything is about GEJ right? Why don't you calm down and read the story before jumping into conclusions? The police tried doing this under OBJ and UMY but were turned down by the senate. Why? Simple! The law does not empower them to register vehicles!.. Is that to hard for you understand?
Two ways:

1.) Why cant they just support the other "Govt Agencies" who are already collecting similar Data ....AND SHARE SUCH DATA for their own use?
Why the Duplication? Why must all Govt Agencies see the public as a source of awoof money?

2.) If they must collect their own version of the same data, then DONT TASK THE PUBLIC FINANCIALLY FOR IT.

Its that simple except they have a "hidden Agenda".

As usual now smiley
