Politics › Re: Senate Rejects Naval Research Institute In Bayelsa by lastpage: 12:16am On May 01, 2012
Nigerians are just too emotional about issues. Is the quarrel about the need for a naval research institute or is it that there is another state that is more strategic for such a project than Bayelsa. And does the legislature in her oversight capacity, have the constitutional impetus to stop executive projects as this? I think these are more valid questions. If this project will serve any strategic security need of Nigeria, then it should continue. The committee should ensure that the quality of work done is good enough for the appropriated funds.
Thank you very much!
I was expecting this sort of analysis from peeps here instead of the usual "tribal rants" we are getting.
It seems we under-rate the "efficacy of RESEARCH" in our daily progress and life in general.
A Naval research institute IS NOT A WASTE OF FUNDS.

For example, most military hardware and new technologies used in warfare/defense and even deterrence, are products of "research institutes".

Even if the Naval Research Institute succeeded in coming up with say for example, a prototype to build "small boats with advanced Navigational facilities on board", it has justified its existence because such boats can be used as Ferries for our inland waterways transportation (as of today, you have to import one), such boats can be used by sea-going fishermen, such boats can be used for "shallow sea" search and rescue, e.t.c.

And l am sure that with the level of intelligence of Nigerians and some strategic foreign collaboration, such research institute can serve as a basis for much development not to mention the amount of jobs it could create (in terms of ancillary services as well)!

I dont care where it is sited, (at least we dont expect it to be like the Nigerian Ports Authority that was moved from Lagos, to a "dry zone" like Abuja!), as long as the "objective of setting it up" is maintained.

By the way, like someone said, the Senator needs to tell the nation why she thinks "its a waste of fund", not just make some silly assertion and then conclude that it should be scrapped.

At this stage, this nation needs a lot more research institutes and the "inventions" of such institutes needs to be funded and commercialized ASAP.
Go to our universities and other tertiary institutions (research Institutes as well) and see how so many 'research products' lie on the shelf, waiting for commercialization!
No wonder we still import Bicycle from India, even the one for our kids, that an ordinary Iron welder can "put together" for peanuts!

How are we going to ever develop with this kind of attitude?

This is not about Jonathan, PDP or Bayelsa state, it is about creating the required infrastructure for future development.
Nuff said.

Honestly, this is NOT ABOUT ACN or PDP or any other party mouth-off!
It is a very cheap tactics to turn every discussion/observation into a political grandstanding!

The President represents the people and thus should be respected!

But it is very ironical if and when the President himself comes out openly (irrespective if it is a party conference but it is covered by media sources!) to SAY THAT HE IS responsible to and subservient to the party money-bags and they elected him!

How then can he get or deserve the respect of the people?

Everytime you throw the "President" a life-line (and benefit of doubt), he has a way of digging himself deeper into a shyte-hole!

Moreso that you feel that you have "Qualified Surveyors" at your disposal, who can "verify and validate" whatever you do for a client!

My drift is thus(and just for "reasoning and enlightenment purposes ONLY): Do you think l would be justified to if l refer to you as "A Quack Surveyor"?

Properties › Re: Top 10 Land Survey Plan Scams By Fraudulent Land Surveyors! Study It Carefully by lastpage:
Werepeleri: The issue remains - Surveyors do not sell lands - you call them in to come and work for you after you have decided to purchase your property - do not mix activities of omo oniles and fraudulent land speculators with the noble surveying profession.
lawyer: So to answer your question, if the land is not free and the surveyor says its free, its his fault 100% for misleading the buyer and should be held accountable. Although i have to confess that sometimes due to mechanical error such as wrong positioning of the gps or wrong setting on the gps could give conflicting reports or when there are 2 or more master plans and each one giving its own separate coordinates, then you dont blame the Surveyor. It just happened especially if he is one with a track record of due diligence. We are all humans so it can happen once in a while and he must attempt to rectify it within his capacity to do so!
In other words, Not all Surveyors who erroneously put "Free from Acquisition" on an encumbered piece of land, are Quacks! Simples! kiss
See,this is where l am coming from!
If you read the two paragraphs from both gentlemen, you will notice that they are about saying the same thing, from different angles!
The Question therefore remains: WHO IS A QUACK SURVEYOR?
From what both gentlemen have said,l can deduce a few things:

1.) Most buyers make a decision to buy apiece of land before even contacting a Surveyor, to see if it is FREE OF ACQUISITION.
2.)After payment, the Buyer Contacts a Surveyor to do a Survey of the land! shocked (I have done this a few times too, just that l was lucky!)
3.)And this is where it gets interesting: A Surveyor (by virtue of his training, Qualification, Certification and Registration with his Professional Body) does the checks for you, using his GPS and should be able to say categorically (excepts as Lawyer has pointed out, UNAVOIDABLE ERRORS CREEP-IN!) whether it is encumbered or not

Question: Since the Surveyor is being paid for his service (to check authenticity of coordinates), why would he "lie" to the owner who commissioned his services?, after-all, whatever the outcome of the "checking" is, will not affect his own payment? What will be his motive? More so when criminal liability may follow!

Thus, will it make sense if l assume, that whoever claims to do a survey and "deliberately lies" about the outcome of his "checks" is actually NOT A SURVEYOR (Would l even call him a Quack? Since a Quack, by definition is someone who is "NOT qualified to (or incompetent to) practice a profession he lay claims to, by virtue of insufficient training/accreditation from relevant authorities).

*Now are there folks who are not Qualified as a Surveyor but deceive the unsuspecting public that they are qualified Surveyors? YES, a big YES!
*Are they "Quacks"? NO, they are just IMPOSTORS! They claim to be what they are NOT! Simple.
I know a few Surveyor's "Boys" (Those he sends to the Bush to situate Pillars or to take measurements since at a certain level in a profession, you could become a "Consultant" and would not be expected to do every rudimentary process, yourself!) who think by virtue of their exposure to "what Oga Surveyor does", they have suddenly "metamorphose" into a Surveyor themselves!

THESE ARE THE MONSTERS IN QUESTION: They are the "Impostors" Lawyer may be referring to as "Quack Surveyors" but they are not even Surveyors, ab initio!

Can we draw inference form "Architects" and the " Draughtsman" issue: Have we not seen Draughtsman "drawing a Plan" before?
*Does that make him an Architect? NO!
*Do some of them take their drawings to "Architects" to "validate and approve"? YES!
*Are such "validated and approved" drawings of sound Quality (if properly addressed by the Architect)? YES.

This is why l say "Lawyer" and "Werepeleri" should each, sheath their Swords!
Issues have become clearer from what l quoted, from both gentlemen above.

The problem we have now are those "silly people on NLand" who want to cry more than the bereaved simply because they "want some benefit" (Now or Later) from the Lawyer! And are fueling this brewing controversy further! angry

I will still implore 'Lawyer' not to take the bait and for him to walk the moral high-road of decorum, being the gentleman he is.
I will also implore 'Werepeleri' (that thing dey scratch body no be small! grin ) to focus on the quote of Lawyer, above: I think it has addressed and rectified your grouse!
Dont fall for the bait of rabble-rousers who want to see some "verbal" WWW-RAW (World Wide Wrestling!) between two adults.

Be "eager to listen but slow to speak", in any 'engagement' between two people!

It is only "fanatics" (be it religious or social) that fight on behalf of others.

I would have loved it if you guys try to create "an understanding" between the two parties (Lawyer and Werepeleri) instead of "fueling the fire" like primary school kids!
shocked

What Lawyer wrote is very informative especially to those who are completely unaware (as in the general public here) of this scams but at the same time, l guess as professionals, we all develop a kind of "negative feeling" when our profession is being taken to the cleaners (am not blaming Lawyer for this, l blame those who bring the profession into disrepute)

There is a Yoruba adage which l will give a literal translation, just for brevity: "If they accuse you (in the market place), of defecating and not cleaning your butt, how many people would you be able and willing to open and expose your butt to, to prove that the accusation is false?"

Read the "you", as "Surveyors", in this context! This is where l think 'Werepeleri' got ticked-off grin grin
But l am sure Lawyer means no harm.
I want to use this opportunity to appeal to both "Lawyer and Werepeleri", PLEASE, lets bury the hatchet, let us be gentlemen on this forum.

Particularly, l want Lawyer to be "large-hearted" and understand where the gentleman is coming from!
I am sure if l did an article on the "scams of Medical Doctors", not all Doctors will welcome me with a handshake simply because most of them so cherish and worked hard to be wherever they are, in that profession today; they would "easily" get offended!
Ditto other professionals as well.

Finally, let all of us who are the beneficiary of such exposee not be too eager to pick sides just because we love freebies!
It simply makes us appear as ignorant opportunists.

@Lawyer: Thank you for your efforts, no-how-no-how, it has enlightened a lot of people. Be calm.
@Werepeleri: Please, calm down and see this in the light of "public interest and no harm intended".

Cheers.

^^^^^He has learned from his former mistakes, like trying to live the same way and having the same expectations (like stable power and low noise level, sane drivers! grin "wink of his U.K lifestyle, IN NIGERIA! wink

Now, he is more "physically and mentally prepared" and at times, that is what makes the difference between "success and failure" in a venture: Your mental disposition.

Once you are sound enough to "articulate a problem", half of the job is done, just proffer decent solutions to them and move ahead.

But nnadozy,
I think "Accommodation" is the greatest challenge you will have in Lagos, down the line.

I would suggest you buy a land NOW, do the paper work and fence it off, and you can build at your own convenience in future, when the price could have risen ten fold! That is Lagos for you! angry angry

Just for the sake of "Logical Reasoning" only.......since l am not a Polygamist and have nothing for or against those who are for it:

I often wonder that "if Polygamy was such a SIN" as being construed by some, How come God was able to "relate directly without qualms", with so many Polygamist mentioned in the Bible?

I cant fathom that God did not speak against it nor destroy those who practice such lifestyle, after-all God is the same Yesterday, Today and Forever, his laws and precepts are GLOBALLY ETERNAL, he could have legislated against it like he did for other sins.

Would he require man, (Christian humans) to be the ones legislating against it?
Even some of the "Legislators" like the English King, are Polygamist themselves! huh shocked

Just wondering aloud!

mbulela: not this story again!! Have we not had enough of this?
OP, kindly use the search button. This has been played out severally in the past on this forum.
Things change on a daily basis.
Important "events" of yesterday that would affect that "decision making", may have ceased to exist today! (Like there was a time when "internet access" was a major consideration in moving back since my business would very much depended on it but that case is no longer valid today!

On the other hand, some years back "security of life" was not a major issue in making a relocation decision back home but today, with "Boko Nonsense Bombs" all over the place, one has to think twice before relocating especially when l intend to set up a business moving "refrigerated Beef" from the North, down South where demand is guaranteed! shocked huh

Thus, Topics like this would ever be relevant and current.

Cheers!
