Where did you read this?
Pray, sir, can you provide your source for this?

Yes. It is! That the more educated a Nigerian, the...

The Federal Ministry of Aviation
will like to clarify that nothing could be farther from the truth....... “The crash occurred at about 4.47pm on Sunday and its last contact with the Lagos Control Tower was at 3.42p.m. as has already been announced.
Now tell me, what do you think the plane was doing, between 3:42pm, when it made its "last contact" with Lagos Radar Control Tower (it was already in Lagos airspace!)......and 4:47pm, when it crashed? (One hour, five minutes!)
I guess you would say it was "parked somewhere in the Skies"! grin grin

Mind you, l am not saying Dame is responsible for the crash, l just want it to b e clear and on record that THE PLANE WAS HOVERING FOR ABOUT ONE HOUR!
No more, no less!.

virtuoso01: At that moment when you feel it within yourself that death is inevitable, you will be be seized by a short and sharp fear then an unnatural calm will settle upon you and you will see the whole of your life flash by in an instant. In sharp detail.

I have been there before and that was how I felt, only that I did not die. This experience may be different from that of other people, but I tell you I can never forget it.
Same with me, some years back, we only survived by the skin of our Teeth!
Its a horrible experience that even the "strongest man" will find over-powering!
In my case, we were about entering lagos through the Atlantic Ocean when the Pilot lost control of the plane and it was bouncing up and down like a Yoyo!
Believe me, l have never seen adult men shitting in their pants before but l saw many that day!
We all believed we would crash into the Ocean!

Yes, my Life flashed past me in a few seconds! The good and teh evil l have done!
I even had a little baby then, who was just less than three months old and it occurred to me that l would never hold him again nor will l ever experience him say " Dada"! I thought about my wife who was waiting for me at the Airport at at that moment! I even wished l had disclosed some earnings/money l "saved secretly", for the rainy day, to my spouse! grin (lesson learned from then: No secrets!)
Right now, l am wondering what someone like "Livi Ajunoma" would have done, if given an "extra five minutes of freedom" from that plane?

At that moment, all l could do was follow my instincts and l began to pray. (Till today, my colleague who was sitting by my side that day, still pokes fun at me: He says l suddenly became a Pastor, "binding and commanding" the plane in the name of Jesus! grin grin Death no easy Bro! wink

But eventually and fortunately, it wasn't yet our time to die.
We landed and we were all so weak from the experience, we could not even stand-up from our seats!
For the next one hour or so, all we could do was "Praise worship" inside the plane, on the Tarmac!........and it happened on a SUNDAY morning as well angry angry
When l came out of baggage clearance and burst into tears on seeing my loved ones (again! ), my wife was shocked (first time she will see me cry!) cause she did not realize that l was just seconds away from being history!. I cried like a baby!
Even years after that incident, l still feel some "collapse within my body", each time l am in a plane (which is just a week ago!) and the plane experiences the slightest of turbulence! Does anybody feel that as well?

Well, l feel very sad for everyone involved. cry cry Its just beyond imagination.

Pheesayor: (eye witness) Like a scene in a movie, the events of June 3rd 2012 is not one I can ever forget in a hurry. It was 3.56pm and everyone had formed clusters around available TV set in preparation to watch the Nigerian National Football team play their Namibian counterpart in Calabar, a home match for the Eagles.
Notice when the guys first NOTICED the hovering plane! It has not crashed yet.

Beaf: The airspace wasn't shut down. Its just a very evil rumour started by Buhari and El-Rufai people to make political gain from the tragedy.
The plane given emergency clearance to land as soon as the pilot called in distress, unfortunately they crashed before they could get to the airport.

A truly horrible story. May their souls rest in peace.

I doff my hat to the pilot who from eyewitness accounts, seems to have done everything possible to bring the plane down away from crowded areas.
But in a statement signed by Joe Obi, the media assistant to Aviation Minister Stella Oduah said,
“The crash occurred at about 4.47pm on Sunday.

The Federal Ministry of Aviation will like to clarify that ..... whereas the ill-fated Dana flight departed Abuja on Sunday, 3rd of June, 2012 at 2.54p.m. and its last contact with the Lagos Control Tower was at 3.42p.m. as has already been announced.
Notice that the CRASH actually occurred almost ONE HOUR after it was notice to be hovering!
Again, notice that the Aviation Ministry said it lost contact (Lagos Radar Contact) with the plane at 3:42!
Do the Maths: Between the last Radar Contact in Lagos (already in Lagos airspace: 3:42) and when it said it crashed (4:47) is ONE HOUR FIVE MINUTES! During this period, it was hovering and trying to land! So, it did HOVER FOR CLOSE TO AN HOUR!

Beaf: That is a path for fools, bro.
Nobody is gonna break a limb to concince you about the obvious, afterall, you are an adult.

The plane crashed after it was given emergency clearance, sir. You are lying when you say it hovered in the air, something no eyewitness has said.
Why propagate lies on a tragedy like the most despicable of gutter beings that is worth only spitting on? Why trample on the dignity of the dead like you are Lucifer visting from hell?

Its your call to be evil, every man has his life to live.
While l will not like to trade words (insulting ones especially,) with you, l feel for the sake and respect to the departed souls, YOUR SPIRITED DEFENSE of the Jonathan Administration, though a paid job and you are doing your very best, should not be a do or die affair.
Just do it based on truth and facts. Make your defense using TRUTH and FACTS Please.
THAT PLANE DID HOVER FOR OVER AN HOUR, TRYING TO LAND!
BIG QUESTION: Why would a plane given "Clearance to land" still keep hovering for over one hour..... and still did not make it to the airport 5minutes away?
I cannot accuse the First Lady of responsibility on this (not yet at least), until l am sure that the Aviation Ministry is not just "towing government line and regurgitating propaganda but l sincerely hope it is not true!

Sam Milla: I dont trust this aviation people at all. This could have been the truth if : the plane hovered at all, even if for ten minutes.
Let the facts keep emerging first, i just want to know if the plane hovered at all.
Even from the post of the Aviation Ministry (and l have read also from the posts of Dana Airlines as well) it said it lost contact with the plane for over one hour! ...before it eventually crashed. Read the bulletin again please.

Thus be assured: The plane hovered for over an hour before eventually ditching.
Even when it crashed, it was "simmering" over some time before it exploded in a ball of fire.
Reports at the seen said they could hear people shouting for help for a long time when the plane crashed (before it exploded) ...AND NO HELP CAME!

This is the irony of Nigeria!
We waste lives like its rain water and those in Government dont give a toss, as long as they can close airspace for themselves and their families on board!

Imagine if a plane was in distress during that time!

The same stewpid and crazily selfish they behavior they exhibit on our roads (e.g, closing the Third Mainland Bridge for almost six hours, just because the "President or VeePee" is passing that road on his way to the airport!), has now been extended to our airspace!

Lord have mercy, what next will they shut down for their own selfish reasons? NEPA? WATER? ALL HOSPITALS or even ALL MARKETS!

There are some things that are hidden from public knowledge, mere speculations are flying here and there.

BTW: A faulty plane, no matter how insignificant the fault might appear, should NEVER be allowed to fly in the air.
There are people saddled and paid to ensure planes are in good working order (Flight inspection Engineers, l think) before take off.
Let them come and explain what they did about the faults on this Dana plane (and the report they wrote about it in the last six months: That should clear their name, at least, leaving management with the responsibility for not "acting on the report".), before it took off the ground........or is it the "visual inspection" only?

He has dispelled every discent and keeps forging on and you still think you are smarter. The smart MAU students will go home, stay for six montha and come back and answer the name.

In any conflict, the first law of engagement is "never underestimate your foe". You lot keep breaking this rule to your own peril. You keep underestimating GEJ and calling him names. Yet he keeps threading paths his predecessors avoided like a plague: electoral reform, FOI bill, official secrets act, fuel subsidy removal, PHCN privatisation and now MAU. Yet you keep saying he is daft.

It reminds me of the story of the Chicken and the Duck. The mother hawk sent her children to get food. They caught a little duckling and brought it back to mother hawk. Mother hawk asked them, "what did the mother duck say?" They said, "she said nothing". So mother hawk asked them to return the duckling. Then they went and caught a little chick and brought her to mother hawk. Mother asked again, "what did the mother chicken say?" They said, "she was shouting and swearing and cursing". So she said "good. Let's eat. The mother chicken has done her worst".

The lesson of the story! Continue to call GEJ daft to your peril! Fingers crossed!
I like this your analogy so much!

Have you ever heard of the cliche that goes like "Those whom the Gods are about to destroy, they first make them deaf (to any reasonable advice) and dumb"? (figuratively speaking.......am not saying God wan destroy the Presido o! grin )

Let him keep "outwitting himself" and doing things that his predecessors dare not do after all, another cliches say "When a drum continually produces a high-pitched sound, its is just a wee-second away from tearing"!!

Kobojunkie: If anyone should stop listening to hearsay, it is you. Even the well-known Abiola tried so many times, even in his album to drum the truth down the earholes of people like you but nothing. The man Fela tried his hardest though.

Stop trying to preach to me what I know is nothing but sycophantic babble from someone unwilling to face and accept the realities of a man who he/she has chosen as a leader for self. I am not your typical Nigerian. I see past much of the bull.
Abiola was no different from the Dangotes, the Obasanjo's and all their ish. The difference between Abiola and Obasanjo is Obasanjo played his game in a more careful way, and did bide his time until it was right for him to assume office. Abiola on the other hand, thought he could play IBB and Abacha to the throne. We all know that didn't work out for him in the end.

This is simply a fight for which name has much more value. It is sad that you agreed with one poster that instead Abiola be given what he deserves, and UNILAG be left alone, yet you do not see how that means that you are of the mind that Abiola is not worth giving UNILAG to. I suggest you go do your homework there, stop trying to teach me nonsense.

Honestly, l am yet to see one single Akokite (I mean one who actually completed his/her studies and graduated with honors...even if it was a 3rd class) AGREE with this Re-naming!

Anyone can "claim" to be a Unilag graduate but from what they write, you can easily see they have no value for that name and cant be a product of that school!
That the current students of the school (who are yet to lay claim to being an Alumni!) are already protesting this "diminishing of the "end product" of their years of study, speaks volume!

Abiola is an Icon, a top notch brand, in his own right. No one can take that away from him.
Unilag on the other hand, is a legacy and top academic brand in its own academic foray, as well.

Both are not the same thing, both dont need to be merged and both dont add value to each other!

Giove unto Abiola what he truly deserves (Political Edifices like Aso Rock, Eagle Square, National Assembly, re-stating/recognition of his mandate, e.t.c) but leave Unilag alone!.

They just want to see the "swagger' of "an Akokite" removed! grin ....and what a better way than to rename the University? Not that they care a hoot about Abiola.

4.)Those who are products of the University: These sort of people are vehemently against the name change, not because they do not love or appreciate Abiola but because they feel that "only Academic Icons" should be named after academic institutions.
Moreso, these set of people also believe that the "Brand Unilag" has gone universal in terms of academic institutions and since it took about 50yrs to reach that enviable height, it should be left like that.
They also think that Abiola, being a "Political icon", should be named after "Political Edifices" like Aso Rock, Eagle Square, National Assembly at Abuja. Though we cannot fail to decipher the underlying fear of "diminished legacy/brand" that these group fears about their institution, should the name change persist. Current, rioting Unilag students also fall into this category. They love Abiola's legacy but would prefer that the legacy of Unilag be kept intact and separate.

5.)Poli-trick-cians looking for a Kill: These group of people fall into PDP (for) and other oppositions groups like ACN, CCNP, e.t.c. Jonathan as the arrow-head of PDP, thinks he can court the support of South Westerners with these move. He thinks doing what is in the interest of the "Abiola family" (Dont know how many of his children graduated,if any, from Unilag!), he can carry the Yoruba votes, when the time comes. How wrong can he be! cry The "opposition" on the other hand, are against it, mostly because they feel GEJ is threading on their "area of influence" and using it for political frog-jumping! To this group, its all Politics and they dont bait an eyelid for Abiola or the University's name

6.) Finally, the Abiola's family: These group are in support for selfish reasons. Who does not want to be associated with a good and established 'brand name"?...not to mention UNILAG! They dont care what it does to the school or the products/students of the University, they are only concerned about their own family name.
But instead of coming out openly about their own "self interest", when they saw the opposition to the name change, they went into "self-pity mode" and tried to "play the victim" by implying that the rejection was an indication that the "interest groups" (everyone against the name change) especially the South Westerners, do not love Abiola or do not appreciate his death! Thus we are not surprised that Kola Abiola said "Abiola died for nothing", when he saw the vehement opposition to the name change! Maybe he can tell us why he thinks changing the name of Unilag to Abiola University or University of Abiola grin is the best option to show gratitude to Abiola.
I guess he was holed up somewhere in Europe/West when "guys were facing IBB's bullets" in the streets of Lagos and elsewhere, just to ensure that Abiola's mandate was re-instated! The same people he is now insulting, paid the "ultimate price" for his father election victory, ..Kudirat also did same but not even he himself did that, rather he's always collected "oil contracts" from the military to assuage his loss!

All the arguments you have read or will read will fall into one of these "strata".
Anything else is just PRETENSE and playing the Ostrich!
We know ourselves now?

UNILAG cutting btw 300 and 400 UME marks for admission (y not 500-700 out of a possible 400?), then making UNIZIK vs UNILAG an orange vs apple scenario are only few of them. Pls bro, demand for admission exceeds available space in every Nigerian (public) university ...not just UNILAG. This is due to carrying capacity, nothing more! UNIZIK only comes a close 2nd to UNILAG in terms of candidate preferences not in d quality of teaching or graduates. Anyway, l just used UNIZIK as an example, since the "Zik, dont rename the University after me" angle came up earlier. The 300 - 400 was a typo, l meant 300 - 350 out of 400 possible Jamb score.
Let me refer you to my post on the whole matter, here: https://www.nairaland.com/950326/they-never-really-loved-mko/7#10963517

Cheers.

All said and done, any intelligent person can see, the "strata" of people posting here ...
I have decided to "categorize" all the posts and everyone will surely "locate themselves" somewhere in-between, if they are honest to themselves!

1.) Those who hate Abiola as a person: These are people like Kobojunkie, who have a grouse against Abiola and see this as an opportunity to rubbish his legacy. They 'openly' advocate for the name change but indirectly in their hearts, they are trying to point out that "Abiola does not deserve it", using reverse thinking! They prod others to say what they themselves have in their heart! wink. These sort of people are actually very dangerous as you can never know what evil they will support next!

2.) Those who hate the Yorubas: This group of people know in their heart that the "re-branding" is totally stewpid but they would not say so. Instead, they are prodding "Yorubas" to say so or say something in the line of "Abiola's name is not fit and proper". Meanwhile, they "TWIST the argument" against the name change, to imply that Yorubas have no respect for Abiola's legacy ...and thus are "bad people"!
They are mostly Igbos (not all Igbos, mind you) that are still consumed by their hatred for Yorubas (for whatever reason) and you can see it from their post! There is nothing you can do about them....a lost cause!

3.)Those who wished but are never good enough to be called "Akokites": These group of people "secretly" see the "re-branding" of UNILAG as a way of "diminishing the legacy and Legend of the University". To them, it is "God don catch them"!. Its basically supporting wrong, out of jealousy. These group of people are the ones using the UNN or other "re-branded" university in their arguments.

BTW: before you post anything, PLEASE be honest enough to tell us "where you belong" in the stratification!

Kobojunkie: You mean this Philanthropist?

http://maxsiollun./2008/06/02/what-if-abiola-had-become-president/
^^^^^^And what is special about what you posted up there?
Who does not take advantage of "their friendship and closeness" to those in power?
Even you running around Abuja looking for something to "chew" is doing the same thing naah?
You come across as one of those "closet haters" within the Yoruba race?

Come out openly and tell us the "grouse" your family holds against Abiola or any of the stories you've been told.
It is cowardly to use this opportunity to denigrate his personality.....and looking at your earlier position on the thread, one might be fooled to think you are taking side with the dead man! shocked shocked

Hmmm...omo eniyan!

^^^^^Stop displaying "ignorance so openly"!

If the Government of the day really wants to show "gratitude" for what and who Abiola was, let them name Aso Rock after him
Abiola was a "Political Icon", not an "Academic icon" in the mould of the Prof. Awojobi's, Prof Wole Soyinkas, e.t.c thus, a Political edifice will be most appropriate.

Better still, let Uncle Jona name the National Assembly or the Eagle Square after him.

But l guess his "political enemies" are applauding him for goofing, once again! grin grin

MKO Abiola is a great man no doubt
. I do not need to rehash his contribution to "present day democracy in Nigeria" but we must recognize also that there are institutions all over the world who have "made their name over time" and no other name would present them in a better light than the one they currently have!

While there are great men (in the likes of MKO Abiola) all over the world, how would it sound if such institutions are renamed after them?
For example, if you mention "Yale" or "Harvard", people take note and remember the institution immediately. They have a Legacy, they are a Brand and a Legend, in time. (Present-Continous)
Now imagine if, Harvard is renamed after "someone in the heart of the Brits" e.g Princess Diana ...Princess Diana University? shocked shocked
What about Yale University becoming "Bill Clinton University"? huh
Even though both are 'men' loved by their people, it is inconceivable and just doesn't sound right and to be candid, it diminishes the institution itself.
The institution is higher than any man...Simple.

1.)Unilag is a Brand: That is why students study hard to acquire a high score (the highest in the country) just to be a part of that "brand". Despite the high/astronomical school fees, tons of students are still turned back since the demand for that school exceeds available space....such is its brand name.

2.) Unilag is a House-hold name
: My own mother was a graduate of Unilag and every one of us (children) are also graduates of same school. Children of my own sister (3rd generation!) are currently students of Unilag. We believe that within the shores of Nigeria, the school is unrivaled. Before IBB came to denigrate University education, Unilag stood out exceptionally, even in the international Arena.

3.)Unilag is synonymous with Lagos: Lagos epitomes Nigeria in the bigger world and for anyone who has traveled outside Nigeria, you dont need any further "explanation" when you say "I am a graduate of Unilag or Present a Honors Certificate from Unilag". (as against if you present a Certificate that reads anyone's name or another University and they have to 'Google' it first grin ). That is the Legacy of Unilag. Tell anyone, anywhere in the world, that "you are from Lagos" and they would easily "localize" your origins. Try it with any other "City's name" from Nigeria and they would ask you: where is that? grin
If you want to cause 'trouble', try address a "Unilag student/graduate" as a "Lagos State University (LASU) graduate", despite their closeness! (no insult/disrespect to LASU, just to show you what "the name" means to those who have put-in everything, to be associated with that institution and "its name)

4.) Unilag is a Legend: Unilag has built its "Name and Reputation" over the years and a "name change" (to any name) would signal the "end of an era" and the "beginning of a NEW era". Is this necessary and of benefit to the "institution and the people" concerned?
That the "Students" themselves who are the primary constituency of the institution (from diverse backgrounds and ethnicity) are rioting over the name change, speaks volume! They see it as a devaluation of their aspirations to be "Graduates of UNILAG".

Kobojunkie: So in essence, you all are saying Abiola didn't do anything to warrant having UNILAG named after him. Cause that is what you are invariably hinting at here, even if you are not bold enough to admit it. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin
Kobo,
Whatever your motives are, you have asked this same question a dozen times, in other threads and as a four-time graduate of Unilag (Ist Degree, Two Masters and an MBA), l think l am in a position to respond to your question.
First, let me point out that its worthy of note that you will NOT FIND amongst those who support this name change, A GRADUATE OF UNILAG! Not a single one!! wink[/color

Only "two" sets of people support this stewpidity:
1.) MKO's immediate family (who see it as a personal triumph!) and
2.) those who see it as an opportunity to rubbish the legacy of Abiola, (especially "non-Yorubas"wink, knowing fully-well that such renaming does neither justice to Unilag nor to Abiola himself

It does not "properly represent MKO and what he stands for and neither does it "add value" to the institution.

Nothing to do with "how loved or rejected" MKO Abiola was, as mischeif makers want to paint it.
Winning a national election by a land slide, even in Bashir Tofa's (his opponent) home town has proved beyond doubt, how much Nigerians rate MKO Abiola.

Questions are: What would such "name change", contribute to "Unilag's Brand", "Unilag's Legacy", Unilag's "World-wide perception" and to Abiola himself? Nothing.
It does not matter whether it is Abiola, Awolowo or any Nigerian for that matter.
No name is better for Unilag, than UNILAG......it does not matter where the name comes from!

The question of "renaming" even goes deeper than the "personality of MKO" and the ephemerally-mundane issue of whether Abiola warrants/deserves to be named after Unilag.
It begs the question as to why prospective students, "choose UNILAG as an institution", when its cut-off mark for some courses are as high as 300/400 in Jamb? Why do graduates of other institutions decide that they have to (or need to) have a Unilag Certificate, over their previous certs?

Why must every discussion be turned into a PDP Vs. ACN war-of-words?
I dont care whether its PDP or ACN that makes life better for the people, just bring it on.

As for the Light-Rails, l was here when the fuss and noise of "COMMISSIONING" was made....

I am still here and waiting to see the FIRST TRAM actually convey a single passenger
, from one point to another.

Only then, will l shout Eureka!

Cant be that silly to be jubilating over "promises upon promises"....or dont we have enough of those already, plus the "abandoned promises" all over the place!

Am waiting.. lipsrsealed

I sympathize with this Lady....being stuck between the Devil and a hard Rock! shocked

But the bottom line is that, we all have different luck and where one person has failed, does not mean every other person will fail, thereafter.

Let her be herself, be of "good character" (most singles are just not "marriage material" ), keep good company/friends and pray for her own man. Wherever she is (Nigeria or US), "he" will locate her, God-willing.

Okay, l am a bit worried for her too
.....just go to our "churches" in Europe & America on a Sunday, and see how many "Single Ladies" are asking that the Pastor "pray for a miracle husband" for them!

And to compound the problem, the "second chance" women (those who have messed-up their own marriage) are also competing dangerously for the same men whom these ladies are supposed to hook-up with........and would go to any length to achieve their aim!! huh huh

Those who "stand" should be very cautious less they "SLIP"!
