mapet: 1. GEJ was grossly uninformed. The laws and statutes of Unilag says that if you want to rename such University after an individual, it must be that that individual has a relationship with the institution. MKO has no relationship whatsoever with Unilag. 2. It is wrong, idiocy and tomfoolery to say it was Tinubu and Fayemi that prevented GEJ from renaming Unilag after MKO. Even the Unilag council, Alumi bodies, ASSU, Student Union and many other interest groups reject the idea. 3. GEJ's action was rejected overwhelmingly because that action, even if accepted would have twisted the essense of June 12. June 12 is a national mandate and not a SW mandate. You cannot just try to compensate SW because of June 12, you rather compensate the whole nation. This is what I believe other tribes don't understand about we SWers, about how we place principles above individuals, how we a primarily collectivist rather than individualistic, how we do not support even our "person" once such goes against principles and values that are altruistic. Thank you, o! I don't know why some people cannot see this simple truth! Let us hope the clueless people arguing in favour of the renaming of UNILAG would be able to read and understand these basic facts. So many of us who do not even come from the Southwest are well aware of the facts on ground! |

Uyemi: And May 29th is not a brand? when did the millitary officially hand over to the civilian government? why do you mark your birthday from the day you were born instead of the day you were conceived? Speaking of the title given to him, Abiola was only a president elect who was never sworn into office which (to a large extent) is just not okay. Call me what ever you want but the truth is that they used a man of quality reputation to play on your myopic intelligence just like they did in 2015 May 29th can never be a brand for most Nigerians, as there was nothing symbolic about it. June 12 1993 had most Nigerians from all walks of life, taking out time to participate and vote in an election for a candidate of their choice. So many people spent hours queuing under the hot sun on that day, to cast their vote. So on a scale of 1 to 10, June 12 would hold deeper significance for most people than May 29th, a day arbitrarily chosen by a military regime, to handover the baton to a civilian one. It was a date that did not require any input from most Nigerians. I hope the significance of the June 12 date, would no longer be lost on you. But you may have been a toddler on June 12 1993, which is why you would equate May 29th as a higher brand. |

ehissi: And let me guess, Buhari consulted widely with the people who partook of the june 12 struggle - like Mayegun who is wondering why Baba Kingibe, who dumped and sold out MKO Abiola and served as a minister twice under Abacha was honoured alongside Abiola - or the leaders of NADECO that are wondering why they weren't in on the whole award ceremony where only some of their recommendations were carried out.
Or the former Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the 2016 National Honours Committee, Justice Alfa Belgore, who is wondering why a dead man is given a post-humous award that the law only permits to be given to the living without even consulting him.
There is such a thing as giving a dog a bad name just so you can hang it. There is also such a thing as dressing up a donkey in jewels just so you can crown it.........
For the price of a pot of porridge, some Nigerians have done both, the height of the madness was Abiola's daughter apologising to Buhari at the event.
At that point, I knew that I have seen it all. But then again, I wasn't surprised, after all she is a card carrying member of the APC. They have become birds of the same feather, after all Tony Anenih was also a members of the SDP during the june era, it's not a new something.
Today they say re-Naming UNILAG as MAULAG was an attack on UNILAG, it was never meant to honour Abiola - even though it is in line with the recommendations of the Chairman of the National Honours Committee - but Awarding GCFR to Abiola post-humously is not - even when it violates the law of the land - here we see a people selling their destiny for the price of a pot of porridge...... And please who is this Mayegun, and what was his contribution to the June 12 struggle? As for Justice Alfa Belgore, the less said about him, the better. Isn't Belgore the same man whose views have been roundly debunked by different legal luminaries? Lawyers tackle Ex-CJN Belgore, say Buhari right to award posthumous GCFR to Abiola by Ibrahim Sha’aban
Two Nigerian lawyers on Wednesday night tackled a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Alfa Belgore, for saying that national honours cannot be awarded posthumously. "It is not done. It’s for people living,” PREMIUM TIMES quoted him as saying.
Amina Miango, an Abuja-based lawyer, said the former CJN “goofed this time”.
According to her, the law is silent about whether the honour should be conferred on the dead or living.
“With due respect to the former CJN, he goofed this time. I went through that Act and there is no illegality anywhere,” she said.
A UK-based Nigerian lawyer and June 12 activist, Abdul Mahmud, said the former CJN was wrong in saying the president’s action was illegal.
“Former CJN Justice Belgore claims the conferment of GCFR and GCON on MKO and Gani respectively is illegal as National Orders can’t be conferred on the dead,” he said.
The lawyer expressed surprise that people have been quoting the former CJN’s position.
"Folks are quoting him! Please, go look at the law yourself, National Honours Act, 1964. It is online.
“Look at the Honours Warrant, a subsidiary legislation made pursuant to the National Honours Act, 1964; then look at Section 2 (1) & (2) of the Honours Warrant which deals with “eligibility for appointment to orders”.
“The CJN is wrong. Dead wrong. That the eligibility for conferment only states two conditions for eligibility in Section 2(2) Honours Warrant.
“The conditions are: 1) must be a citizen of Nigeria. 2) Any person which the president considers eligible for honourary appointment.
“The provision of Section 3 (2) Honours Warrant which says a recipient must appear in person to receive his honours is clawed back by Section 3(3), which grants the president powers to dispense with the requirement of section 3(2). https://dailynigerian.com/lawyers-tackle-ex-cjn-belgore-say-buhari-right-to-award-posthumous-gcfr-to-abiola/ As for Abiola's daughter, she has a right to express her opinion as an adult citizen of Nigeria. Her apology was her business - you may choose to agree with it ,or disagree with it. It is your call. Your disagreement does not rob her of her right to express her views. People may disagree with some of the names included the honours list , (i.e. names like Kingibe and Nwosu). I do not agree with the honours given to both men. But it does not detract from the president's powers to honour Abiola and rename June 12 as democracy day, and that is precisely what has been done. Let everyone learn to live with it. |

AutoJoshNG: It has become a regular sight. It is the long stretch of parked trailers. They all line up along the stretch of a massive 12.4km of expressway, from Onipanu to the ports in Apapa.
Several bridges along the way are not spared of their presence and enormous weights. The bridges include: Ojuelegba, Abati, Stadium, Ijora, Iganmu, Eko, Carter and Jibowu bridges.
These parked articulated vehicles are also the cause of the chaotic traffic flow on and around these bridges. They typically cause journeys that ought to be in minutes to last for hours.
Even the government appears incredibly clueless about a solution the situation.
Only God knows how long Lagosians would have to put up with this nuisance.
https://autojosh.com/checkout-the-12-4km-stretch-of-parked-trailers-on-the-road-in-lagos-photo/ Honestly these trailer & tanker drivers are totally lawless! Once they are chased away from one place, they re-group and move to another area of the city, to line the streets there, and cause chaos. They were chased out of Apapa, then they moved to Ikorodu road, Amuwo Odofin and Mile 2 area. Even the truck owners do not have a say over the antics of their drivers. Any state governor that wants to prove his mettle in Lagos, needs to devote time, energy and resources to curb this menace! |

theoldpretender: 1. Let me correct a misunderstanding you have. What Buhari did in 2016 was not deregulation, but partialprice increase.....due to the fact that the import costs of fuel had gone up to N130 per liter...and fuel was still being sold at N87
2.Deregulation would have involved Buhari essentially telling marketers that they can set any price they want for fuel....government won't intervene...so in theory a marketer could sell fuel for N200 while his neighbour can sell for N300...and no one wouldbother.
3.The GSM was deregulated from the word go. Goverment allowed MTN and ECONET(now AIRTEL), later globacom and etisalat (now 9 mobile) set their prices without government interference. Back then that meant SIM cards could cost as much as N10000 (2001-3 ). By 2005/6...SIM cards cost N400 and less...due to increased investment, lots of money flowing in since companies could makeprofits, and new investors coming in...
4.Now if Govt allows complete deregulation as regards petrol....no more 'Fuel is N145'.....sure prices will shoot up. Sure costs will go up...but as money flows in,more investors will come in, there would be funds for refinereis, new support infrastructure...and eventually....prcies come down. theoldpretender: Problem is, for how long?
Plus, it does not strike me as good business practice when government dictates your profits, which is what subsidy does.
Plus, subsidy scams happen because people are importing and selling at a loss.
If we deregulate, prices will go up, but there would be money to fix pipelines, invest in new refineries and so on.
Rather than pour money down a big hole in the name of subsidy, money that could have been spent on things like....railways.
Anyway, we need oil at 140 dollars according to Fitch to balance our books. Oil is at seventy now. Where is the money to keep paying subsides coming from? (More loans, no doubt) Wait first...are you a Nigerian living in Nigeria, or are you a Nigerian living abroad, who is not in tune with the realities of life on ground here? Each time, prices of petroleum products have been increased, the excuse given by government is that such "money would be used to fix pipelines, invest in new refineries, upgrade infrastructure, alleviate poverty etc." And each time prices are increased, no such thing takes place! It is all a lie! As long as your naira continues to fluctuate negatively to the US dollar, prices of petroleum products would continue to increase. If you remove subsidy on petroleum products such as petrol and kerosene today, inflation would wipe away anything you have gained from such an action. Why? 80% - 90% of your transportation of goods, services and people is done by road, in Nigeria. A lot of alternative sources of power for domestic use & MSMEs, relies on petrol gensets. Any increase in petrol prices would automatically push up cost of goods and services. So how do you prevent prices from spiralling out of control or how do you contain it? A multi-dimensional approach is needed to solve this issue. Govt cannot afford to build any new refineries today. Anyone waiting for govt to do so, is living in a fool's paradise. Govt should be putting in place enabling laws, policies, guidelines to promote establishment of refineries, by private firms or the organised private sector. Rail transportation of goods and passengers, needs to be urgently overhauled and improved to reduce dependence on road transport. Power supply needs to improve significantly, to reduce usage of petrol gensets. Foreign exchange stability needs to be actively pursued and implemented, using a variety of mechanisms. It would take ages to expantiate on these aspects. But all these factors listed above, need to be addressed before deregulation kicks in, or else the outcome may be worse than the problem you are trying to resolve. Every country in the world subsidises something. But it is important to ensure that such subsidies are channelled in the right direction, to alleviate the suffering of the poor and vulnerable, as well as to cushion the effects of inflation so that it does not wreck the economy. |

Xander85: This is to show you that all these affirmations of love, reverence and respect for Abiola and what he stood for is all opportunistic grandstanding and playing to the gallery!
Where else in the world is someone good enough for the highest honour in the land, and good enough for a public holiday taken in his honour, yet he's not good enough to have a university named after him!? Even Awo that hasn't been accorded this much honour by the federal gov't has a university named after him!
Your kind rejoicing here that Tinubu and co coerced and cajoled others to reject the naming of UNILAG after MKO....it's either your happy because you really don't think MKO merits the honour or you're happy b'cos you felt it would 'shame' and 'embarrass' GEJ, not minding the fact that MKO merited the honour! Either way, you don't come out of this with your honour and integrity intact so wipe that smirk off your two faces! MKO merited the honour, but GEJ's renaming of UNILAG after Abiola was an insensitive Greek gift. It was done to rubbish the brand identity of UNILAG, and it was done without consulting widespread stakeholders who had invested time, energy, efforts and resources into the growth and development of the university. GEJ wanted to restrict Abiola's honour to a mere Lagos affair, without any impact. There were new federal universities opened in the south by the same GEJ, that could have been renamed after Abiola, without creating a fuss, but GEJ chose to ignore those options. GEJ obviously had a sinister, spiteful and ill-conceived motive in changing the name of UNILAG. A leader is meant to consult widely before taking such monumental decisions, but GEJ refused to do so. Why?? |

theoldpretender: So you want buisness people to sell kerosene at a loss?
The reason why our downstream sector is in a mess is because government controls prices.
And as a result, people cannot make profits as they should..leading to scams, lack of money to fix refienreis, etc..
Better we deregulate the whole thing...and allow marketers sell kerosene at the price they want to sell it. Prices will shoot up, but....investment will flow in,and prices will eventually fall because competition.
And all those subsidy scams will stop...because who wants to be doing scam when you can earn much more under deregulation?
Note: Deregulation , to anyone that is interested, means that government hands off pricing kerosene, petrol...and allows marketers set prices as they want...so Buhari's price increases are not deregulation at all...since govt is still determining the price. Oga, your analogy does NOT work for the Nigerian market. Diesel was deregulated a few years back, but has the price fallen? How many people are importing diesel today? From 198-205 naira per litre in February, diesel has now become 240 naira per litre in June 2018. Why? 1). Inadequate local refining capacity. 2). Increase in crude oil prices, leading to corresponding increase in petroleum product prices derived from crude. 3). Fluctuations in foreign exchange rate, used to import petroleum products. As long as these factors are not stabilised, price of petroleum products like diesel and kerosene will continue to rise. Petrol is still stable for now, because prices are controlled by govt and subsidy is still being factored into the price. |

He really is a Nigerian popular music prince. It’s his credit cards that are accused of being fake. | June 20, 2017 03:51 PM | BY DAVID J. NEAL | dneal@miamiherald.com |
Welcome to Miami, Dammy Krane.
The Nigerian pop star (actual name Oyindamola Emmanuel Johnson-Hunga) faces seven counts of credit card fraud, one count of grand theft and one count of fraudulent identification possession after he and pal Chukwuebuka Gabriel Ilochonwu got cuffed at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport June 1.
In Krane’s possession at the time of the arrest, according to the police report, were seven credit cards — three in his name, four bearing the name “William Payton III,” and none in which the numbers on the fronts of the cards matched the numbers on the embossed strips.
Krane is accused of using a fraudulent card to buy the tickets. After not getting on a plane with his friend, Ilochonwu threw him under the bus. He told police Krane bought the tickets. That left Ilochonwu, 26, facing only grand theft charges from this arrest, but he’s still a guest of the county jail.
When arrested, he was out on bond while his April case on credit card fraud, grand theft and fraudulent ID possession charges goes through the legal system.
Krane, a Baltimore resident, posted $22,500 bond after pleading not guilty in court and on Twitter.
“I do not do fraud,” the 23-year-old said in the Twitter video. “I do not participate in such things. An agent booked my flight with fraudulent cards.”
Police say TapJets CEO Eugene Kesselman called them after smelling something funky with an attempted ticket purchase earlier June 1. Someone using the private jet booking company’s phone application established an account in the name “Gabriel Ilochonwu” and tried to buy a charter flight using a fake American Express card. Same cell phone, same kind of attempted buy-by-fraud as happened on March 24, according to the TapJets system.
When that Amex card got rejected, Kesselman said, the same cell phone created a second account under “Emmanuel Johnson.” The second try at a buy went through for $10,943.01. But when TapJets checked with the banks issuing the cards, the arrest report said, the banks said none of the cards were issued under any of the names used by Krane or Ilochonwu.
A TapJets employee told police she fielded a phone call from an “Emmanuel Johnson” who wanted to make sure that the jet he reserved would actually be there. She said the caller asked if there was a problem with the credit card used for the reservation. Aware of the fraud, but wanting to keep the caller in the dark, she said there wasn’t a problem, but he could leave another card if he wanted.
The caller left two credit card numbers and e-mailed a third, completing the hat trick of fraudulent numbers, according to the report. TapJets called police, who waited at Opa Locka airport for Krane and Ilochonwu to arrive for their flight.
Post-arrest, police claim, Krane gave permission to search his Samsung Galaxy 7 phone. Police say they found the TapJets app and saved on that app was the Amex card rejected earlier in the day. Chukwuebuka Gabriel Ilonchonwu, out on bond after an April credit card fraud arrest, was arrested on one count of grand theft along with Dammy Krane. Miami-Dade Corrections http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/miami-gardens/article157185574.html Instead of Dammy Krane to hide his face in shame, he is opening his mouth wide, in an attempt to trend. lala45: Lilian has attitude problem, even if she marries the best husband, she will still misbehave What about Ubi's attitude problem? Ubi Franklin impregnated another girl while Lilian was still married to him, and pregnant with their son. He didn't even have the courtesy to tell her. She found out in a bad way. There is just a few months difference, in the age of his son, and the daughter that other women had for him. Ubi is just lucky that Lilian gives him access to their son, which is why he keeps splashing all these photos on Instagram etc. Lilian is far more reserved and cautious, when it comes to posting photos of their son online. Ruthluv4: But y did u cheat on ur wife n got another woman pregnant while ur wife was carrying ur child ? Do u knw wat u made ur wife go tru, is painful to her dat she lost her home. True! |

Odey1997: Only in Nigeria you decide to do good and be rewarded with something as meagre as this Just imagine not even 100k This is the reason people barely return things But question is Is it your possession? Can't you do goodwill without expecting? If I was the one I could have just taken 250k no qualms and return the remaining half What if that money was not even the property of the person who lost it? It might have belonged to someone else, or he might have been asked to deposit it in a bank on behalf of a 3rd party, and he misplaced it. |

Marvellouzkk: Medicine after Death: Those who detained and killed Abiola are now rewarding him that Yorubas may reward them with their vote in 2019
The question most people are asking is, when will Yorubas get smart and stop allowing themselves to be used and disposed of like toilet paper by the North? Some people may call it hate speech but I think it's time the Yoruba race wake up. The North continues to enslave and conquer Yorubaland and it's people for political crumbs. From Awolowo becoming Vice President to Gowon during the war which purchased Yoruba support against Biafra that he Awolowo had initially supported in the agreement he reached with Ojukwu prior to his release from a prison in Calabar.
The most bizarre part is that it was the same core Arewa North that jailed Awolowo. An Igbo man, Nzeogwu, led a coup that it's sole aim was to release Awolowo from prison and install him as the Prime Minister of Nigeria. It was another man, Ojukwu, that eventually released Awolowo from prison but upon his release, Awolowo went back to North and superintended the second worst genocide in human history.
The same thing happened with Obasanjo's civilian presidency, which again was another move by the Fulani caliphate to assuage the Yoruba people after annulling June 12 and killing Abiola. This pattern has always been at play in the relationship between the core North and Yorubas for centuries. Look at what Fulanis did to Yorubas in Illorin where Afonja, a Yoruba prince was temporarily made the political head of the invading Fulani Islamic army to get him to turn against his fellow Yorubas. At the end of the campaign Afonja was killed by the Fulanis and his land converted to Fulani emirate.
That conquest that was made possible by Fulani political inducement spread all the way to Atlantic Ocean in Lagos. That Islam virtually dominate all Yoruba towns and villages was as a result of the mistake one Yoruba man made. They are repeating the same mistakes today. Illorin and wider Kwara State is a fully fledged Fulani Emirate with no Oba in sight and shall remain so forever. A Yoruba Oba will never sit on the royal throne in Illorin again. Illorin throne has become the exclusive prerogative of the Fulanis. This unfortunate outcome and national disgrace was made possible because a Yoruba man accepted what appeared on the face of it an exalted political position not knowing it was a Trojan horse.
Yorubas are learned, cosmopolitan and urbane. Surely they have enough intelligent people in their ranks to understand the damaging effect these periodic politically motivated inducement from the North can be in the long run. Unless perhaps their well concealed hatred towards Igbos, driven purely by envy, outweigh whatever consequence or humiliation they are likely to suffer at the hands of their Fulani masters.
Again, this confusion was apparent when in exchange for the empty title of APC National Leader and few ministerial appointments, Yorubas returned into power what will go down as the worst regime in living memory. That mere posthumous elevation of Abiola to a GCFR is sufficient to erase the horrors of this Buhari regime in the minds of Yorubas speaks volumes about their political priorities. Maybe Yorubas doesn't want any positive change in Nigeria after all but merely using their clamour for structural changes within the system to advance a purely parochial agenda of self preservation at the expense of collective well being of all ethnicities in Nigeria.
It won't be misplaced to infer that such euphoria exhibited by Yorubas at mere pronouncement of a post hummus award for their illustrious son may portray them as confused to the point of not knowing exactly what they want. The feeling one gets is that wherever the wind of political expediency pushes them, they go. These are hardly the attitude of a people that have a principled commitment to a change that will be of benefit to all.
The Yoruba race possess enough brave and outspoken intellectuals but unfortunately the impression one gets is an absence of mental toughness and ideological consistency needed to break the debilitating and damaging influence the North exert over them. Today they are rightfully clamoring for a return to regional arrangement, the next they are threatening to unleash Oduduwa Republic, but all the while the North continues to make a complete mess of their long term strategic interests.
SOME YORUBAS WHO ARE WISE AND SMART ENOUGH TO READ BETWEEN THE LINE WILL UNDERSTAND THE POINT OF THIS POST! Wait first...why are you taking panadol over these Yoruba people's matter, that you had to write this long epistle? And why are you lamenting over their town called Ilorin? And who told you that everyone must be a Christian? Are you so intolerant of other religions?
