There are different categories of job

1) There are jobs that pays £10/hr, there are jobs that pay £20/hr, there are jobs that pay £25/hr and so on

2) There are jobs that pays little at the start and it increases with experience, while others do not increase with experience.

Meaning if you have a job paying £25/hr for instance, even without packing extra shifts, you will earn more than someone working £10/hr and is parking shift left, right and center.

My advice to immigrants is instead of packing shifts upandan with the intent of having money, look for that job that will pay you more with less work.

In other words; in your situation, rather than asking for a job that will give you opportunity for more shifts or that will have an understanding manager, ask for skills that are in demand that pays well and has good prospects, use the little spare time you have to develop those skills and with the same hours as you are working now, you will earn more.

Don't come for my head that I haven't mentioned any skills, this is my own contribution.
I know we want better for each other. All you mention above is the way to go in theory but its alot complex in practice.

Hi guys, please i need your input in this. First of all, i apologize for my lengthy post. I moved into the uk last year april as a student dependent, i started working in may and have been earning a minimum a minimum wage with over time and the littlest i earned is 1900 including over time which enabled me clear my wife's fees and pay some bills added with the little she earned working 20hrs. In the long run she got pregnant and went on maternity leave a month before we welcome our baby in December.

She was on maternity leave, earning maternity pay which supports me while i go full blast working overtime with same earnings not more than 1900. She went back to work in August and now on 37.5hrs full time as she has finished doing her masters.

Now with the responsibility of catering for our child who is now 10months, we had to adjust with our work patterns (Thank God for giving me an understanding manager and hers too) by picking shifts when we like to help us on who stays home with the baby while the other go to work. I had to let go working overtime as i work on days when she's not working and she works on days when I'm not working.

This has really impacted on my earnings and pay as i now earn the basic pay of 1800, and with tax, ni and pension deducted i am left with about 1600 sometimes lower if i don't work night shifts as we earn enhancement working night shifts. My wife is very supportive as we split montly bills, spendings and all ( I know that this should even make it easier as she earns more now) , but the issue is lately the cost of living has gone up, our rent was increased, energy bill has gone up as we had to sometime put on the heater cos of the baby, his feeding, clothing and all his needs.

The bills are choking and i can even hardly save. My wife on the other hand contributes her quota on a 60/40 basis as i contribte the most as the olori ebi even though we earn same salary monthly. I have racked in credit card debts and all. I have had to cut down alot of spendings to adjust ( and that includes me not buying orijin bitters or going out with friends, going to the barber, i cut my hair anyhow i sabi, and some needs....lol). What can i do in this context as i am considering getting a new job that can pay more on same hours, but I don't know if the manager will be as understanding as the current manager i work with.

I need to earn more. I am considering investments, but don't know which or how i can get into one. Its eating me and i had to pour out my heart. I'm sorry for the lengthy write up. By the way, i work as a support worker and my wife as well as she got sponsorship and I'm a dependent. But we just can't do more hours cos of our baby.

I am considering remote works, but concentration is much needed in this and our baby is always seeking attention. How do one cope in this. Is 1600 earning considered good in such situations?
you earning 1600 monthly is a fair wage to me. Just go 50/50 with your wife after all equality is what the world preaches this days.

Gift7428:
Hello NL’s I need you to help me.

So I moved here for my masters with my daughter, she is 11 now, will be 12 in December.

Straight to the point, I leave her for some hours alone at home when I am working.
Sometimes I drop her off at a friend who doesn’t work.
If I am going out for the night and returning same day I leave her alone till I return. For example a friends birthday starting 8pm and finishing 12 am.
I have a camera in my flat that I monitor her with and prompt her on what to do like wee and go to bed.
She doesn’t cook when I am not around, she only microwaves cooked meals.
This is how we have lived our lives for about a year.
Now my neighbor on my right is a Nigerian family with two young kids while the flat on my left is sometimes used as Airbnb.
The camera is quite loud so I suppose the neighbors can hear me.
There is a CCTV in front of the apartment for safety reasons I believe is monitored by the letting agent.
The people who live downstairs don’t even know me.
So one night I went out with course-mates to have a drink around and got back same night.
On Monday of that week my letting agent said police came looking for me and asked if I was in any trouble.
I wasn’t home, my daughter was in school
I said everything was fine I believe.
The next day while I was home they came again, got into my flat and said they got an anonymous call that it seems I left my daughter alone at home. They checked my bathroom, my fridge, was asking what my daughter eats and how much I cook for her. So I told them the truth that I was out for few hours. They said I can only leave her alone when she is 14. They asked to speak with my daughter when she gets back from school. They came back later to speak with her in private and they asked that I excuse them.

After some minutes they came up to me saying my daughter seems happy and well looked after and she seems to have a good relationship with me. They asked that I shouldn’t leave her home alone and contact them if I needed help.
To be honest it’s not easy for me asking for help in a place I don’t have relatives.
So Sunday I was out for few hours and they checked in this Monday again saying they needed my details to pass it to social welfare. I asked the police if everything was okay they said yes but they have to refer to social services.

I really don’t understand or know what to do.
Is anyone monitoring my movements or am I been watched from the CCTV outside my apartment? I am thinking if this is what I cannot cope with then I might have to send her to my mum in December then she returns to the UK when she is 14 years ( if I am still in the UK)
I don’t have extra cash to pay for child minders, I have a minimum wage job and sometimes the people who help are not always available.

Thank you 😊
Next time buy your drink and shayo indoors.

Please go for the IT Engineering one and avoid those ones saying health care assistant now and later in life. A lot of people in the UK are dabimoseda FC and they have the capacity to twist your orientation to match theirs. I have heard people saying "Oyinbo no dey give Nigerians jobs apart from care worker" and you wonder where they get that mentality from when a colleague who came into the UK less than 1 month ago has already gotten a Senior DevOps role that pays £85K.

People often can not see beyond their noses and came into the UK with very little plans to rise beyond where they are and you need to be careful how you interact with them.

If the company is on the sponsorship list, you can ask for sponsorship after probation has been passed. Even better as you have prior experience in Nigeria and tech in Nigeria is the same as tech in Afghanistan grin

All the best
e say na dabi moseda lol

Yeah, it’s possible if applying to jobs that can sponsor.

To me the easiest would probably be applying to jobs on the Civil service website(target EO, HEO, SEO roles) which hopefully they should be able to sponsor or NHS. But the former is more fair and transparent in their recruitment process based on my own opinion anyway and experience.

A close friend would probably be switching soon, Would let you know.

Just make sure you remove information like location from your cv.

Say for instance

You once worked as a Customer service representative in Zenith Bank in Lagos

You don’t need to put Zenith Bank, lagos, Nigeria.

Just remove those location.

Customer Service Representative- Zenith Bank.

Don’t put location., etc.

Same with your Uk jobs, you don’t need to put location as well.

Make sure you include that your care experience in your cv, it doesn’t matter.

Wish you good luck
Applied severally with no feed back. How do you go around writing the cover letter.

Would you want to reside in the house, with the woman you already divorced........😜😂

You simply expose yourself to possibilities of varying allegations, injunctions and all sorts of mess .......

The children would NEVER be rendered homeless, by any Judge.......

Only in the man's name, would NOT save the man...... The wife would still be entitled to 50%, as a starting point, because the property is/was a family home ........

Hence putting the mortgage in only your name, is at a disadvantage to you .......🤣😜

Be good to her, so you don't end up homeless or renting again........😂

Maybe this is where the slavery analogies have come from, because even if the person earned reasonably well, they would likely still struggle financially due to this huge debt.
Looking at this from another angle i think it’s worth expense because you would come in with your partner and kids. Your partner can work unlimited hrs to support the family.

Hello everyone, just to give a bit of an update. The Midwives got back to us today that they have completed relevant checks/ confirmations with the NHS safeguarding team and the social services as regard’s piercing the baby’s ears. They were able to confirm that since it is cultural, it was fine as long as the piercing was done with clean and sterilized objects, and we clean with salt water regularly till it fully heals, to help prevent any infections.

Thank you all for your inputs

Morning all.
Regardless of how people are warned before coming to UK,still majority will not listen.
UK is not a place where people own houses with 3buildings in it or over 10rooms.
Before coming either on Sponsorship, Visiting or Student route,we all say to the government accomodation provision is made or will be made.
Even people dat where born in this country wey don reach 30yrs plus are living with their parents or decide not to create family or born kids
How will a foreigner move to a different country without making provision for accomodation.
If people can book flights ahead, same shd bre for accomodation.
UK now no easy for new entrants but still majority of our people go dey come with faith.
An average accomodation for a family of 4 in London is 2bedroom flat which cost over £1600 with bills.
Most people coming now are coming with kids. Child care cost sef cari muscle.
Am just checking for a Nanny myself,it cost average £10/hr.
To see accomodation is easy as far he/she have the gbemu. Airbnb,Hotels dey there.
My first experience as parent on childcare,I went online on childcare.co.uk website,I found a childminder, she requested £100 borrowing even b4 she started looking after my kids,I gave her. till date, she never refund.
Even the lady na black. She even said to me that this shd he a lesson to me,that I must never leave my kids for strangers.
I made complain to d childcare website, nothing dey do for the matter. This same lady even steal, scam other white parents wey used her service.Nothing wey police do.
I know 9ja no easy, but if new entrant to UK can at least pay 2weeks-1month Rent in advance, it will be better for them and the family.
Don't rely on family and friends for UK for accomodation. Na breakfast dem go gv person.
God bless
This coming to uk without plans for accommodation has been happening since 19 kokoro.

No amount of preaching will suffice.

Dem go dey alright las las

Oh I am 100% left wing. Jesus was a socialist. He always fought for the oppressed. He was working class, poor , humble. He was slow to judge, infact each time he met a "sinner" (corrupt tax collector, village pr*stitute, armed robber, leper) he drew them closer and changed their lives. He was a refugee and immigrant too and lived by the sermon on the Mount. These facts informed my political leanings today.

You could as well passed without commenting. It's not mandatory you give your opinion. I saw Airbnb before I posted here, how many people could afford Airbnb for two weeks. People even pair up here in case of situation like getting apartment before starting new job and I am not asking for free accomodations.

Una nor de fok? Funny as it may sound, but it is the truth. I don't know the cause of your quarrels though but I think if she say she doesn't like you ignoring her during such quarrels ...try to be the bigger person and don't ignore her. Never leave the house in anger or sleep over a quarrel. Sometimes just a hug and some knacks would resolve the whole issue. Also try to initiate moves to see the gynecologist if conceiving is an issue ...this is one of the causes of tension in newly weds. God bless your marriage.

Updated..
Before I forget ...you guys should sign up to go see a professional marriage counsellor that is if you try playing the bigger person to resolve the issue doesn't work out. Think of what she loves best, order it and get it delivered to her at work or at home. Ladies love surprises. Try to knack too ...inside kitchen or where she least expect in the house ooo grin
