As our representative from the parliament talked about, there is a great history of those contributions. But that is history. Is Nigeria really playing a major role today in the crisis in Niger on its border, or in Guinea, or in Darfur, or after many, many promises making any contributions to Somalia? The answer is no. Nigeria is today NOT making a major impact, on its region, or on the African Union or on the big problems of Africa that it was making before. Now, of course, on the negative side, the collapse of Nigeria would be enormous, but is that a point to make Nigeria strategically important? In distilling the article to the part quoted above, I first looked at the tile: Realities Of Nigeria’s Diminishing Relevance To U.S., Africa By Princeton Lyman by Abiodunspectre Next, I asked myself the following: Actually, of what relevance was Nigeria to the world and Africa before and what has since changed. The abridged, brutal, answer is the following: Before, Nigeria served the world as a marketplace for foreign goods and to America, specifically, Nigeria served as an oil reserve. Now, Nigeria is beginning to look inward and beginning to priorities Nigerians over Africa. Below is the brief outline of the before and now: Before When not providing an oil safety net for America and the West, Nigerians were prioritizing Western goods and services without competition and prioritizing Western entertainment and fashion. In Africa, Nigeria naively believed she was doing the bidding of West and hoped to reap the reward as freinds of the West. Our actions were misguided. I say misguide and naïve because Nigeria did not understand the Western World’s duplicators nature. Nigeria fell for the West’s overt pronouncements and attitudes of apparent concern for African suffering masses, their wish to see democracy established throughout the continent and drive to prevent the collapse of the relevant African states in order to mitigate that covered in the preceding sentences. In reality, however the West lead by America was unconcerned about Africa except in terms or resources and idological Cold-war leanings (Cold war battles in Africa were about spheres of influence that had resources implications.). In anycase, their real intentions and motives were how best to reap the benefits of destabilization in Africa and prevent other competing world powers from reaping same. Therefore, by misreading, the real intent of the West, Nigeria made interventions that at best embarrassed America and her western partners and would lead to the destabilization attempt now on Nigeria. Now, Nigeria is more willing to close border; more critical of Africa Union; lukewarm to ECOWAS (not lukewarm enough for me ) disapproving of French proposed West Africa Currency pegged to the French franc; not so keen to play leading roles in places like Mali and Cameroon; suspicious of her coalition collaborates in the fight against terrorism; more willing to collaborate with nations like China and Russia etc, etc One of Nigeria’s chief flaws is an inability to understand duplicity except within Nigeria internal politics. Nigerian leaders and people suffer this same fate. An example of this resides right here in the article posted, which is a duplicators attempt at goading Nigerians into committing more fully to a big brother role in Africa from which the author fears Nigeria is moving away. |
lonlytroy:See this one. They were lucky that Nigeria let them carry Ghana must go bags. They deported Nigerians first and when they did, they wouldnt even let Nigerians carry bags; they deprived Nigerians of all that Nigerians worked for an accrued over many years. Make no mistake, Nigeria will unfortunately retaliate for this maltreatment of Nigerians in Ghana today. It’s only a matter of time. |
Leave Ghana or stay and put up with their maltreatment of you in the absence of them being unable to respect their own laws at all levels. Respect is not earned, people treat you well if they like you or if their upbringing instills in them fair code of conduct. If they are lacking in these throughout the system, and willfully so due to agenda, there is not much you can do. |
Technology/ IT Collaborations between India and the Africans of the relevant African nation become a Zero-sum-game for the African nations in the collaboration but win, win for the Indians. This is because the aim of the nationals of the African nation in question is expertise and Know-how transfer. However, since India isn’t sufficiently technologically advanced to the level where the Africans could meaningfully benefit from technology transfer, the Africans loose out and India gains in the form of prestige as well as financially. This is firstly; secondly, not only do African loose out by learning nothing and yet footing the bill, Africans can also loose out in instances whereby international organizations and business provide programs that are meant to enable the technological, scientific and educational advancement of certain third world nations that are thought to be lagging behind the rest of the world. In insistence such as this, by positioning themselves as partners to relevant African nations qualified for these international grants, the Indians gain the benefits meant for the African nations as heads and qualified experts of these recipient institutions. An example of this might be something like Microsoft, Apple, Face book etc wanting to create institutes in some African nations for the development of African programmers. The African students would never develop an African way of seeing things in programming that might result in an unexpected way of solving problems since Indians would be head of the institute, be doing the real programming so that the Africans learn nothing. The software developed by the Indians behind the scene would be past off as software developed by the young Africans. The African nation would be praised as promising producers of software designers and engineers while making no actual to limited progress in producing young African coders. Nevertheless, the African leaders/ business people of the institute on the African soil would not care because of the National accolades and their share of the financial gains in the form of funding and investments. So the Indians gain as teachers, recipients of the foreign grants, African officials gain as part of the institutions being funded and young Africans gain little in terms of being in charge and developing thire own atual African brand. Phew the above is labored and I’m sure I didn’t explain it right but I hope, I explained enough to provide an inkling. |
Another thing, people need to stop protecting Ghana under the aegis “Africa”. Africans did nothing here, Ghana and Ghanaians did. When none South Africa Africans of varying nationalities are maltreated in South Africa, the world condemns South Africans not “Africans”. When Nigerians are critiqued they are criticized as Nigerians not “Africans”, Give unto Ghana her dues good or bad. We need to get away from this racist notions and method of dismissing the complexly and magnitude of genetic variance in Africa by lumping all of Africa as one boring mass of sameness. So, no, what happened in Ghana is example of Ghana mentality and attitudes not example of African ways anymore than the Casts based persecutions in India is an example of Asian ways. If there are no “typical Asian ways” then certainly Africa, which is the most heterogonous and divers place on Earth, does not have a “typical African way”. |
Leave Ghana or put up with thire rubish. One Africa na by force? Sometimes though I recon Ghana does this to show off to the world how they handle the Nigerians. Notice how they selected the tallest police men they could find. Latter, they will boast that part of their humiliating of Nigeria is part of the clever marketing of Ghana. Were I in power in Nigeria and was capable, I would strip all Nigerians in Ghana of Nigerian citizenship. I will do this because I understand absolutely and fundamentally what is going on, majority of Nigerians do not because Nigerians are not looking closely enough. I understand the Ghana mindset because it is a simple and child-like one not difficult to workout. |

No Chinese, White. Arab is flogging a Nigerian let alone mangle their hand or foot, total lies! You cant do that to a Nigerian man. The worst I imagine could happen would be some Nigerian working in a Chinese owned factory showing strong-head. The employers call police, as would happen anywhere in the world, if an employee is arguing, being seen as threatening and refusing to leave the premises. Police arrives and accosts him from the premises, he angrily yabs the police outside or at the station, the police unprofessionally beats up. He turns around to claim that the police beat him just because of Chinese. Then the media would run with it claiming the Chinese ordered the Nigeria police to beat up a Nigerian citizen, how brainwashed. We live in an age of mobile cameras, few people in Africa are quicker than Nigerians to film or photo things. Where is the Video or Photo of Chinese violating this supposed Nigerian? Anyone can get picture of marks or injury and claim whatever they want just as a random individual can get random pictures of injured people, post it online and claim whatever they wish. No people in the world are quicker than Nigerians at filming and posing online. Show us video, voice recording or unaltered picture of Chinese violating a Nigerian. Look in you tube you’ll see the Chinese whipping that Kenyan. |
High-rise buildings like these should have a narrow channel of water around them about six feet deep. I believe that in wake of runaway inferno, this water would save many of those that jump out of windows in desperation as long as they do not land on the walkways that lead over the water to the building. |
Igbo people of Nigeria are generally very independent and proud; I doubt any Chinese treated any of them in the way posted here. You dare not mess with Igbo if you value your life. Make official investigation into this affair and I bet you a different story will emerge. News on Nigeria is usually false. |
dasparrow:Liar. The things you mention didn’t happen in Nigeria. These are finding of African Americans in Gambia, Ghana and elsewhere in East Africa. I know, since I monitor these stories. Its sneaky attitude like yours that shows Africa should not unite. Instead of organizing to fight these inequalities and inferiority complex behavior in these African nations, you want to smear Nigerians with the same brush in order to feel that these nations are not worst, but that all of Africa is the same. Africans never want to learn form better Africans but choose to be resentful of them. Africa always works downwards. |
Faithful007:Regionalism is retrogressive, does not devolve power enough for your typical multi ethnic African nation. Nigeria's current system is the way forward for Africa. Mali needs to adopt a federal government system. |
Jamaican of Indian extraction. Funny how some African Americans on the radio are raving about her, reeling out a long list of her qualifications and carrier positions with the enthusiasm and glee they do not show when Nigerians do similar. Black people are such fools. This reminds me, blacks do not like the success of other blacks and often blacks work downwards instead of up, which is why I vehemently oppose United Africa. African nations would achieve better working independently; unity will drive Africa downwards for in groups the lowest denominator drives him/her. |
heendrix:son of a wild animal spotted. |
YEBOmadiba:Murderous, yes but because of apartheid and racism. And I don’t believe there is black south African vendetta against Nigerians more than any other African migrant communities. In my mind, the relevant South Africans are currently in denial about their murderous dispositions, among other damages, caused by the trauma of apartheid and this finds expression in blaming the murdered, when this occurs, for their murder. South Africans in my experience so far, seem more concerned about South Africa, jobs, housing, industry, party politics and sometimes on how Africa could be better, leading to better trade, science and progress. They do not seem to be a people secretly wishing or actively working behind the scenes for the downfall of other African nations while openly giving the impression that they are a people for black unity and progress.. But, i may be wrong. Perhaps I should have stated that I do not dislike South Africans. |
Oil Spill In Mauritius Turns Crystal Clear Indian Ocean BlackMauritius is in the East African Ocean. Oil spill is turning the clear East African Ocean black; however, if the oil spill isn’t tackled, population will spread to the Indian Ocean. It used to be called Indian Ocean up to the time (Before BLM) when Black people didn’t matter and were often dismissed as irrelevant. Now, (After BLM) for the sake of compromise, the ocean has a symbolic line demarcation across the nautical centre exactly half way between the Indian Asian shoreline and the East Africa shoreline. This half of the nautical centre is the East Africa Ocean, that half is the Indian Ocean. |

osystein:I like South Africans. |
YEBOmadiba:Nigerians seem the realists in Africa, the nation where individuals tend to be critical about themselves and their nations and are able to endure terrific criticism from the world community and yet not retaliate with the same venom. The rest of Africa gives the impression that they are delusional. Here we have murderous South Africa forming kind people because of one kind act. Another example is the spat ongoing between an African American woman living in Gambia and Gambians abroad. The African American woman is mostly concerned about the sexual exploitation of minors in Gambia by expatriates but also irritated by casual everyday corruptions as she sees it. Unlike Nigerians that would have listened to her and criticize ourselves and admitted that we are as terrible a people as anyone could come across, the Gambians are butt-hurt. They are furious because as far as they are concerned they are a wonderful people. One Gambian has gone as far as to start a petition to deport the African American woman from Gambia. Such a shameful act. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tVS9AeoTi0 Curiously Africans are quick to call Nigerians names, we are fraudsters, criminals, loud, dishonest and so on; these hateful opinions slip forth from their well oiled mouths, when its about Nigerians but when they are criticized and even only minutely and fairly, like Arty did, they become hysterical and fall apart. |
heykims:Are you kidding? Nigerians that call themselves all sort of hatful names ? ![]() |
15:20 7 AugOne of the oddest things about Nigeria security industry and one that is little mentioned in context of mass killings like that quoted above is the apparent inability of military and police to track down large-scale killers and apprehend them. In one of the earlier pages on this military thread, an ex general talked about Nigeria military inability to plant Agents in some of the affected communities up North. Many of you here have discussed and made similar observations to the ex general and have expressed your frustration similarly. I share this frustration yet I can see why Nigeria military may not be planting Agents in such communities-that is indeed if they are not. I can see how, in the current atmosphere of distrusts that is shrouding Nigeria in gloom, why Military and Police may be moribund. Here are examples of national distrust: people talk of fifth columnists in the military; people talk of military brass appropriating funds; soldiers are at liberty to take to the media to point fingers at their commanders and accuse them of incompetence or sabotage; people hating SARS, police and soldiers; people condemning in the most hatful and vicious terms anything pertaining to Nigeria etc. Therefore, one could envisage how planting Agents of the state in these NE Communities could expose Agents to betrayal by villagers; how military may fear that Agents may go over to the terrorists side; how the terrorists’ historic blood thirst may suggest to the military that should and Agents be uncovered in some communities the terrorists would wipe out the entire community in revenge etc. So, yes, I get why the military may not want to plant Agents or if they are doing so, why it may not be bearing fruits. What I don’t get, however, is why our Security Industry by which I mean the military, polices, Secret Service Agents and agencies, private investigators, are unable to track down mass murderous of the type described in the BBC article quoted above, especially since these mass murderous up north do not strike alone. Their trail is bound to be so overt (large footprint) that any half competent forces on the side of law and order would or should be able to track and capture them in short time. The ability to capture these culprits would be a huge gain in the fight against insecurity perhaps more important and more significant in ending this insecurity than planted spies and Agents. Do our Police and Military lack the ability to do simple detective work ? |
youghs:No half-measure border barrier costs will be astronomical at the outset but will recoup the cost in many benefits besides terrorism. The alternative, which is what you fear, will be more expensive in terms of lives lost, infrastructural destruction, ethnic unrest and opportunity cost between investing in development or repairing, protecting and hunting cells. Let us just hope that a snippet of the comment attributed Burati the other day, which is that he stated that these terrorists are all homegrown, was a misquote. This is not because Bokoharam, ISAWP, and the rest will be more difficult to defeat if their fighters are all home grown, since actually they would be easier to defeat, but because the comment would tells us something unsettling about the capacity and agenda of our security institutions. |
Torture2020:That was the 60s, the early days, when African resources for the taking were easier and the West were predominantly interested in central Africa, and today’s reality was in the making. Ghana cannot make friends with West, the West is no friend of black nations, whites are heartless as Nick Cannon intelligently observed, they will cry crocodile tears, watching African women and children wallow in death and degradation and continue to engineer more of the same situations that originated the conflict. Nigeria largely saved America’s bacon in the mid 70’s Arab oil crises irrespective of how America now downplays this role and look at how America treats Nigeria today. What has Ghana done for America or the West? Nothing and your president thinkS Ghana is well in there with them. Mocking or having a laugh with the West against Nigeria does not make them your chums. Nigeria has long played and interventionist role right from the mentioned US Middle east oil crises when Nigeria assisted America against the interest of the middle east, Nigeria crossed Britain in South Africa, Crossed the US in Liberia, Crossed miscellaneous Asian and Western interest in Sirea-leon, Crossed god-knows who in Gambia. These people never forget or forgive. Nigeria has established herself as an interventionist Nation in West Africa, indirectly discouraging external and internal forces of destabilisation because Nigeria might intervene. The fear of Nigerians intervention is not evidence of Nigeria’s military capabilities but that by intervening the cost to them would not be offset by what they may gain in resources. Nigeria was unable to do much intervening in Mali because of French forceful interests and because Nigeria no longer has that magnitude of military strength and economic influence and the result is there for all to see. Almost as important as Nigeria’s economic and military strength, is Nigeria’s willingness to sacrifices her young people’s blood and future for others. When or if Nigeria falls in West Africa, civil strife will gradually overtake the area, this is clear to any objective observer and analyst. |
Mocking self is what Nigeria does. Nigerians do not generally mock others, Nigerians defend themselves from others. And Nigerians are not sneaky. Africans from Ghana, Kenya Cameroon etc are very sneaky. I bet what happened was that Cameroonians wanted to publicise their BB show so they attacked themselves posing as Nigerians in order to create a spat. Through the resultant spat as Nigerians are drawn in, Cameroonian BB gets wider attention. |
operationmoses:Do not rejoice too much, one Nigeria is saving West Africa, which is why she is being targeted. Without Nigeria, war will return to Liberia, Sierra leaon; Gambia will collapse into military dictatorship, and those West African nations right now being assisted and patted on the back by the West and Saudi Arabia respectively will be abandoned to terrorism sweeping down from the Sahel. Wars and civil strife will stretch right across West Africa into Central Africa followed by UN exploitative peace keepers, spying NGO’s and AID agencies and their funding appeals programs. And Africans generally will again be the subject for international debates on race and intelligence and population control. |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1HA9LlFNM0 Remember this, if you are under 25. Think of it as a symbolic moment. This marks the day, if all goes well, that you will be able to travel to mars in 30 years time, for under 50k, conservatively. |
Faithful007:"Nigerians" on social media have extrapolated from this and are already believing and putting it about that soldiers not bokoharam are the terrorists up North, which was why I felt that the Governor’s statements were unfortunate. You, know, the military infrastructure has a grater capacity to cast aspersions and make it look more believable than any Governor or even the presidency is able, especially if none of it is based on truth. The military hierarchy would be first to know that the Governor is on to them and thus would make plans to eliminate him. For instance, they could have moved first or move next and accused/accuse the Governor of being behind the terrorism in Nigeria along with some other shadowy governors. They could have made the governor despair and claim that the terrorists were responsible. The fact that they have done none of this rather suggest that the Governors words should be viewed in context of frustration rather than the beginning of the revelation of some deep conspiracy that includes the nature of the terrorism in Nigeria, its funding and facilitations. |
Lol, Nigerians generally believe things told them no matter how ridiculous because Nigerians tend not to lie easily. Ghanaians tend to lie easily and ridiculously, which is why they often get the better of Nigerians in the world stage when it comes to telling their national stories and realties. A typical Nigerian uses self as yardstick, he or she tends not to believe that others are capable or doing things they wouldn’t. It is difficult to relay the sense of this beautiful aspect of Nigerians to the world since the world has them pegged as corrupt people. The world does not easily equate corrupt with honesty, so I use the Mafia as illustration. It is said that Mafioso are often brutally honest yet they engage in criminality, extortion and murder. |
Build flat roof police building: this distinguishes it from ordinary buildings, lends an air of professionalism and enhances the aesthetics of the area. States in Nigeria need to build with the intent to compete with Lagos for international interest and traffic. Let’s do away with all this lazy, plonk-down-anyhow-building mentality. Make police buildings look professional, have a standard and uniform design for all of them throughout the realm. |
