FamilyRe: No Child After Marriage: How Long Can You Wait? by MacLovington(m):
I think it depends on the couple. Such things should be agreed on beforehand: if you both want kids or not and when to start. if the man is 45 and woman is 39, you can't really wait for too long.

People keep talking of God here. Faith is good. Fact is infertility is common. It has always been. Many people will not have babies naturally.

I know of a couple who just had a baby a few months back after years of trying. We only heard from another person that it's through IVF. Many of those testimony miracle babies you see in your church may well be IVF babies. Help yourself if you can.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria Ranked Worst Place To Be Born In 2013 by MacLovington(m): 2:54pm On Nov 22, 2012
tpia1: regardless the state of the educational system, fact remains nigerians from nigeria (born in nigeria) still do better overall than their foreign born/raised counterparts.

what the foreign based nigerians have to struggle with, includes being in a multiracial environment (where they're expected to be at the bottom of the racial equation), while the nigerians from home do not have to contend with that, although granted things might change with all these chinese and other stuff.

another thing nigerians overseas have to contend with, is having most other things (aside from race) very easy- this doesnt necessarily encourage strong character when it comes to stuff that matters.
Things that matter like paying bribe, looting public purse and everybody being his own local government? It's true. Most serious countries where diaspora kids are don't build such "strong" character.

EducationRe: Did You Ever Doubt/Criticize Your Teachers When You Were In School? by MacLovington(m): 2:28pm On Nov 22, 2012
I did it in secondary school. It was in a physics class (not practical)in the lab. This teacher had a way of doing abracadabra calculations. It was in mechanics. Now we had already covered the topic in additional maths class.

We had be planning to confront him one day but we wanted to wait for GCE results (external candidates)to be out.
Once the results were out and most of us passed the five subjects we needed, it was time to do it. We were in class 4 of the old 5-year secondary system.
After one of those abracadabra calculations, I said sir, can you explain how you arrived at your answer? He gave an unsatisfactory answer and started deriding me instead. He went on to say that at this rate, you can never make WAEC.

Another boy in my group said but he already has all the 5 papers took in the last GCE. Students were laughing.
He said so these days WAEC just dash papers to everybody, so that's why he's proving too know now!

Fact is we never got much encouragement to be inquisitive and excel. Our curiosity was suppressed. A lot of boys in my group had the ability to be at university at the age of 15.

That's why I encouraged my niece to leave secondary school with two years to go when I saw her brilliance. She finished Uni at 19.
Teachers out there should not see students' questions as a challenge. You might just be having the privilege to teach students not far way from being geniuses. Nurture, don't stifle.

At Uni, the prof didn't see it as a challenge, in fact he was grateful for it. This was in the West. I don't know how a Naija prof would have taken it.
AutosRe: Very Clean Mitsubishi L300 BUS (pritately Used In Naija For 1yr Plus) @390k only by MacLovington(m): 3:33am On Nov 18, 2012
@Samuelo,

Ileke Idi may come across as harsh with her comment but she's right.

Even with small business mindedness, that bus can be cleaned up or seat covers used to make it more presentable.

You're not alone though.

You see people advertising a house built up to lintel for sale and the whole plot is totally overgrown with weed!

I think we need a more professional attitude generally.

PoliticsRe: Who Is Capable Of Leading Nigeria Now?: Your Opinion by MacLovington(m): 7:20pm On Nov 05, 2012
The right person to lead Nigeria is the very person that will never get the chance to rule. Just like Awo never got the chance. Nigeria was born as a mistake, baptised as a mistake and from all indications, every national move has been a mistake.

So Sir Ahmadu Bello's theory that Nigeria is the "mistake of 1914" would be a starting point to look at.You cannot pile mistake upon mistake and expect anything tangible.
RomanceRe: Being With A Man As He Builds Himself Up From Scratch by MacLovington(m): 11:36am On Nov 05, 2012
My dear there are a few things in your (you anjd your guy)favour:
(1) you love each other
(2) You appreciates that he's himself
(3) You guys are not rushing into things (even though marrying you would secure him green card).
(4) You are both still young and can see how things go over the next few years-no pressure
(5) etc

A few things not so much in your favour.
(1) Your parents have a certain idea that their lovely daughter should bring home an already made man (nice house, job, cars and all). At least you think they do.
(2) You guys are from different countries. Even within Ghana (Gas, Northerners and Ashantis etc) and within Nigeria (Ibos, Northerners and Youbas etc) can even be suspicious of each other. So prejudice is abundant everywhere.
(3) You love your guy but you still toy with the idea of leaving him (you asked for advice about this) to marry the guy of "your parents' dream". So you have doubts.
(4) It takes too to tango. You don't know if your guy really wants to settle down with you. Perhaps he wants to but he's all too aware of the class/security difference between both of you. He wants to be made first so that you can proudly present him.
(5) etc

If you wait for him there are two things. It can work or cannot work.
If it works you are safe. If going sour and you have the Grace and favour of God to avoid disaster you are safe.
If you lack the wisdom to avert it, there are two things.
It's either you were never meant for each other or you were not mature enough to make it work.
If you were not meant for each other, que sera sera you are safe.
If you were not mature enough to make it work, friends and family who were aginst it in the first place will say "I TOLD YOU SO".

All in all, look into heart and what you really want. Ask yourself which things are superficial or vain and which are really worth it.
Bon Courage!

CelebritiesRe: Actor Pete Eneh Loses Leg To Infection by MacLovington(m): 6:37pm On Nov 01, 2012
Jarus: Diabetics don't get injured. It doesnt get healed. I lost my MIL to same few months ago. She was diabetic and and got a little injury that never healed, and while we were settling for the amputation option, we lost her.
.

My condolences.

If diagnosed early, managed well and blood glucose kept low enough, say under 6mmol, small injuries may heal. Problem is late diagnosis. Most damages done cannot be reversed. In your MIL's case, your better half and siblings should keep an eye on blood glucose/cholesterol/lifestyle even if they are not "fat". As you will be aware, it does affect slim people too.

Cultured: SIS are you sure that diabetes is treatable ? Or did you mean to say it's manageable .Please , expatiate , I have a relation suffering it .
.

Manageable as you said. The problem is late diagnosis. Kidneys, eyes, cardiovascular system/end areteries might already be compromised. Some only find out when a wound doesn't heal.
I think there should be a free screening program for anyone over 40 in naija and 35 if there's any close relative affected.

Same should apply to hypertension, cervical and prostate cancer screening, though age may may be different.

Too many people lose bread winners to preventable/manageable diseases.
Apologies if my 1st comment was seen as tribal. I guess I was a little angered by such comment as "where is south south"
Such comments and subsequent comments makes me feel as if some guys are trying to feel more important..
Once more sorry 4 the harsh words.. Tnx
.

What do you expect from people with "na-we-get-Nigeria" and "na-we-be-majority" mentality?

Just ignore them.

All these attitudes make nigerian unity a pipe dream.

This reminds me of a friend's experience. He (a minority tribe person) got 1.1 in History from a top Naija university.
In Europe, Europeans and other Africans working with him and other Nigerians (majority tribes) knew that his analysis of Nigerian history and politics was far superior.

One day, some political events ocurred in Nigeria and fellow European staff wanted to know more about it. The other naija colleagues didn't give a satisfactory and unbiased explanation. The Europeans said fine let's wait for Mr. X (minority guy)because we are sure he will explain it better.
In response the majority tribe people said " he's only from a minority tribe, he doesn't know anything about Nigerian politics".

The Eurpeans were surprised because he was deemed clueless because of his tribal origin. The same tribalism affected his job prospects back home and he went abroad.

Most people who describe GEJ as clueless today, many do so on account of his minority tribe.

GEJ is by far not the best Naija or SS can throw up BUT you cannot convince me that Tafawa Balewa, Gowon, Shagari, IBB, Abacha or Yar'Adua were the best Naija could offer when they came into office.

I left out OBJ and Abubakar because they came into office by accident.

If public exchange of saliva and oral bacteria colonies is your definition of civilisation, you need to write a history book.
RomanceRe: Can You Ever Sponsor Your Lover Abroad??? by MacLovington(m): 4:50pm On Nov 01, 2012
Sponsor your wife/husband if going for say an MBA or so for one year, on the ground that all fees, accommodation etc are paid. And you can afford to go visit at any time. Or your spouse can come and visit during holiday.

But from what I have seen many married people (both sexes) cheat like hell if they are away for more than a few months. Especially with classmates etc. It's even worse for women who are struggling to survive abroad. They can give in to a generous guy to make ends meet.

Men do it for no reason except for the thrill/fun/conquest.

Of course it always depends on the individual.

14men/day?

14*30 = 420/month, 5040/year, 50400 in 10 years . Na lie

angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry
.

I think the figure should be more than that. Quite a lot of Naija people have it here in the West. Even a friend in his early 40s died of it. It usually affect over 50s. We know this here for certain because there is adequate care and documentation.
Some years ago (2008) it killed over 28,000 men in the US in that year alone. That's even a country with a good screening (PSA) program. I don't know of such routine screening program in Naija (correct me if I am wrong).

What you see in post-mortem is that virtually every male over 80 has some cancerous changes in the prostate but remain in-situ (dosn't spread) and the person dies of something else. Quite amazing.

Because prostate cancer mostly spread to bones/spine/pelvis, lungs and liver, people may be battling symptoms in those secondary sites in Naija never realising that it's from the prostate if they cannot afford proper diagnosis/scans etc. Since health care is not free.
Also post-mortem is not routinely done in Naija even in sudden death cases where it should be compulsory. We're missing lots of death causes for that reason.

It is not uncommon for people to have sudden breathing problems due to pleural effusion DUE to spread of ovarian or prostate cancer to the lungs.
CultureRe: Which Tribe Bears Foreign Names The Most? by MacLovington(m): 5:02pm On Oct 30, 2012
anonymous6: First of all do you mean surname? or first name? because based on the answer you will get different answers, in general I would say Hausa's take the cake, because many use Muslim names both surname and first name because of their religion. When it comes to igbo well I have noticed many of them have alot of English first names then any other tribes but with igbo surnames mostly, followed secondly by Edo's. When it comes to yoruba I rarely met one with a English first name, a few have English surnames though but when it comes to Muslim Yoruba's it is either they have both Muslim names or either or most of the time.

6, Why don't we hear or read about this Oyakherua, who is Nigeria's all-time 5th highest goal scorer? Scored that many

Because everything in Naija is politics. Politics is a game of numbers. The Oyakherua guy sounds like a minority (few numbers to sing his praise). If very many people (often on tribal sentiment) praise somebody enough, the hype sticks. Same with vilification.

Let's assume this is not a superstory.

Ol' girl, chai the thing dey scratch you gan.

So of all the men in town, na your best friend's man and your Godchild's papa you go nyansh. Na waya oo.

The koko be say you don chop the apple and e go hard you to stop am.

Na so so liquor the yeye man go dey take bed you.

Let's be honest: you have always fancied the man (you thought he was good looking) and perhaps you envy your friend a wee bit too.

By nyanshing someone's husband, have you also cheated on your own boyfriend or you have none?

Some of these career ladies these days sef hmmm....

Now your possible options
(1) kukuma take your friend husband since na you dey look after yourself. That anuofia of a man think say girl wey dey still do omoge and a mother of 3 go get same body.
(2) Confess to her and lose a friend, clear your conscience and at least you no go nyansh the man again.
Everything else would be hypoccrisy, tracheary, deceit and living a lie. Shikena.
