Afam4eva: The person you quoted says BEST and here you're saying MOST RECOGNIZED. Why don't you ask him what he means by BEST. And btw, the most recognized languages in Africa are Swahili and Hausa before any other.
Hausa is second most spoken in African territories

Yoruba is second recognized in the sense that people learn it outside Africa, just little less than Swahili

Segeggs: Yoruba language is the best in africa.
Statistics show that Swahili is Africa's most recognized language.

Yoruba comes second, that's why we Yoruba most develop and appreciate our culture, spirituality and language more.

We should look forward to having Yoruba as Oodua nation's official language

bigfrancis21: I wonder why nairalanders paint a different picture from reality on nairaland.

There's no yoruba language in sierra leone. The descendants of former yoruba and Igbo ex-slaves who settled in Sierra Leone have mixed and are called Krio. They speak a language called Krio which is pidgin English language.

Also, Yoruba isn't spoken in Cuba and Brazil. It is only used as a liturgical language by santeria and candombele adherents who practise the religion just as catholics recite mass in latin. This population of this ifa-related worshippers is actually small compared to catholics, protestants etc in Brazil and Cuba. Brazil is a predominantly catholic country. Latin America or South America is catholic in population. As for day-to-day speaking of Yoruba in these countries, it is non-existent.

Jamaica doesn't practice ifa-related religions. They practice Obia instead which is a mix of Igbo's 'Obia or Dibia' and Akan's 'Obeyah' beliefs.
Dude I know cubans who recite odu ifa in Yoruba language

there is this Music group from Sierra Leone who adds a lot of Yoruba lyrics

I've never been sure of Jamaica but Cuba speaks Yoruba as a conversional language. And Yoruba religion is also practiced in properly in Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago, Ifa is best recited in Yoruba there. And many come to learn Yoruba language in Nigeria

EBK2: Speak the language that will enable you be the best God has created you to be before you exit this planet into eternity. Some people are so afraid of losing their cultural identity. The only identity that lasts is Identity in Christ. Anything other than that, you are wasting your time in fighting a battle you will lose. There are languages that wont get you anywhere in this world (this may well include your ethnic language), so why bother. The earlier you know this, the sooner you will be free, else you will continue to be troubled by something that doesnt matter.
See foolish Jewish slave. I should leave my language and culture for Jesus, because he left his own language to learn Yoruba abi?

Wat u are saying is for us to learn the language of God's chosen people- Hebrew?

igbsam: Yoruba Language will be very difficult to fade away easily. I went to Benin Republic (cotonou) on a business/official trip. When i got there, the man i went to see could not speak nor understand english but only french language, i could not speak french but only english, yoruba, igbo, okpe and urhobo language fluently. It became difficult for me. while i was there staring at him and waiting for an interpreter he asked to come around, a call came in through my MTN Phone (Roaming) and then i was speaking with the person on the other end in yoruba language, the man stood up, walked to me and spoke to me in yoruba language. I was shocked.

He said to me, they also speak yoruba there in benin republic (this was like 5yrs ago). He told me that 80% of the people living in Benin Republic speak and understand yoruba fluently.

I also got to know that some part of Jaimaca speak yoruba, how true ?
Very true.

2nd language in Benin republic is Yoruba, but their dialect is so tough to understand.

Togo and Sierra Leone also speak Yoruba in Africa

While Cuba, Jamaica and Brazil speaks in Americas

Eze Promoe: None of Nigeria's major languages can go extinct in my opinion. It is like a competition between the three ethnicities to preserve their languages, and save it from going extinct before that of their counterparts.

I foresee in the future (like 100 years to come) the fusion of all languages into each other, maybe then there will be call for a united Nigerian lingo.

Olorun oni je ko se le. A united Nigerian lingo could help stop tribalism and improve a lot but As a Yoruba that's a bad idea because our identity and personal culture would be lost in the process.

I prefer Oodua nation where all dialects are merged, or even only the Lagos dialet is spoken

GeneralShepherd: Well, I find it ridiculous that God will create man knowing fully well he will eat the forbidden fruit and still plant the tree anyway!!

Secondly, project man according to christian belief in my opinion is a failure!!

Why? If I were to develop a car the first products will be prototypes(Adam and Eve) if they failed the field tests, why would I continue production knowing my products were dead on arrival.

If Adam and eve who were direct products from God failed, how does God expect derivatives of that product to become perfect?!

And since God is all knowing He planned all this from time immemorial from creation,to the fall and the names of all that will go to hell.

But then The Christian God doesn't exists, because if there was a God(the Christian God),his logic will be airtight and not filled with the contradictions in the bible.

peteregwu: what is the different btw him and babalawo. I know he is spiritualist, but all of them are the same jare. they all worship demons.
I don't know wat kind of spiritualist he is, but it is an evil kind.

Babalawo are not wicked or evil, they preach good character, wisdom and intelligence. Do not let Nollywood deceive u.

Babalawo are the highest and most respected priest in Ifa Orisha practices.

They are pagans who worship and teach about the God of the Yoruba people. They don't worship demons. In Yoruba spirituality, demons are called Ajogun, and they are not directly counterparts of the western/Christian view of demons. The ajogun are negative forces that brings bad tidings to humans.

Ajogun attack humans on these occasions

1. To execute the law of karma(bringing evil to those who do evil)
2. Evil humans call him them to hurt innocent people.
3. When someone curses another, the Ajogun are the ones that ones that carry the effect of that curse to the cursed person

The man in the op is probably using Ajogun powers(tho he is Igbo, their spirituality is different from Yoruba)

But Babalawo are devoted to Gods not demons
he is a spiritualist. na dey same people.
Spiritualist is a person that performs spiritualism.

spiritualism is belief in the consciousness of unalive entities.

Pastors are spiritualist, Christians are spiritualist, muslims are spiritualist, Babalawo are spiritualist, pagans are spiritualist, all religions are a kind of spiritualism The only people who are not spiritualist are Atheist

U belief Jesus is alive even tho he has been dead for 2000yrs- that's spiritualism

U believe an unseen holy spirit empowers Christians- that's spiritualism

You believe an unseen God in heaven is the creator of the world- that's spiritualism

So you are also a SPIRITUALIST

NativeBoy: The old Judges 1:19. I guess this was meant to catch me unawares as though I had not read the bible. This is a typical example of cherry-picking scripture. Perhaps you could read Joshua 11:1-9 and Joshua 17:14-19 and Judges 2:1-4. It is clear that they would have defeated the Canaanites as they had done earlier but they were afraid and decided not take them on. As a result of their unbelief, the Canaanite tribes remained in the land.

I sincerely hope you aren't consciously trying to distort scripture. Were Israel on the hill when the Red Sea was parted? Or when Egypt was afflicted with multiple plagues? How about when the entire earth was flooded?

I will stick to facts while you and Macof are more than welcome to your name-calling. I guess that might convince someone.
you read not to understand

Joshua 11:2-3 states that Israel's enemies lived both on mountains and around mountains.

Joshua 17: 16 states that the children of Joseph were not confident because the hills were not enough

Joshua 2:9 states that Joshua was buried in the mount of Ephraim close to the hill of gaash. Moses also disappeared/died on a mountain.
