Between 1917 to 1991, the Soviet Union took chess seriously and it was their own way of showing that their system works. They would politic chess, spend money on their players and punish them if they lost. Guess what? the Russians dominated chess during that period and were the best in the world. They produced many world champions and chess giants like Alexander Alekhine, Mikhail Botvinnik, the magical Mikhail Tal, the impenetrable Tigran Petrosian, Boris Spassky, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov etc. They dominated chess except for a three year period (1972-1975) where the great Bobby Fischer was king and the USSR treated their chess superstars as national heroes and were given celebrity status. I guess you are right when you wrote that if a society places so much value on an intellectual endeavour, they are usually good at it. Asian parents place so much emphasis on academic excellence in the field of maths, physics, engineering and medicine. Little wonder they are out performing others. The Chinese go through a lot in training their gymnasts right from an early age and take their gymnastics seriously. No wonder they win a lot of gold medals.

If god answers your prayer to take away your cancer now, will anything spoil? What is that necessary thing god cannot achieve without putting you through trial and suffering? grin

how can an all knowing being test you when he already knows the end result? grin

I am a fencist when it comes to God. Intelligent arguement would suggest God doesn't exist, but we all know the world isn't intelligent or logical.

On one part, believing there isn't a God is quite intelligent, but believing there isn't isn't fulfilling either. What we are left with without a believe in a great force is a void of hopeless and emptiness ; that our lives offer no purpose ( my supervisor from Japan mentioned how Japan is trying to get people more religious to avoid suicides )

I always likened the God argument to a person lost at Sea. There is a 10% chance people are coming to find you, or there is a 90% chance nobody is coming. But I would take 10% all the time due to the hope and believe it inspires. Which could determine how best I thrive for a better life.

Hopelessness isn't cool, Whether God exist or not could be debated back and forth with no conclusion, but Believe brings you assurance of a better future.

imagine if the Doctor says you got Cancer and there isn't a cure and you will die, then when Doctor says you got Cancer but people survive it 10% of the time the difference in cantina CEO in that person could be the difference between life or death.

On life and meaning, we find our own meaning through our Passions. There is no collective purpose just individual. I want to be a writer ( script Writer ) to inspire and educated people, that is my purpose and I hope to find fulfilment.

Lastly there isn't a good thing about pessimism. it makes you depressed, achieve little and look at things in gloom. Cheer up love.

Great take. Though people are different but I am not scared that god doesn't exist. I love the truth and I am not bothered by hopelessness or misfortune. For me, it's the truth even if it's not pleasant to the ears. I take life as it comes. I would like it if I could live forever or if there were a pleasant afterlife but I just have embrace facts and not lie to myself.

I appreciate the fact that others are not like me and they are free to deceive themselves as long as they don't impose their believes on others. Me? depressed that there is no afterlife and god? Nah, I take life as it comes. I face my happiness and sorrows with hoping in a god. The only good thing about pessimism is that your mind is prepared for whatever comes. grin

As I have said, I don't know how the universe came about and I don't know if there is a creator or not even though I am inclined to believe that a natural process brought about the existence of everything. However, I am sure that all religious gods do not exist.

I know that all religious gods known to man and all other world mysticisms (psychics, native doctors, traditional voodoo, curse, witchcraft, sorcery, magic, spells etc.) are ridiculous garbages and falsehoods with no basis in reality. I don't know how the universe came about and I don't have answers to all of life's questions. I will believe in a god if there is any evidence to conclude that he/she/it exists.

Even if others take things by faith and ignore holes, that doesn't mean that you should follow suit. It makes no sense to do such. Start questioning things, embrace critical reasoning and start seeking evidences and investigating claims. Test and try claims.

10) SUCCESS IS STEP BY STEP UNTIL THE VERY END : you must be consistent and not rest on your laurels, keep on at it step by step till the very end. Because you worked hard and made sound decisions in the past doesn't mean things will turn out well. A single mistake, ignorance or bad association can cost you all you have worked for overnight. So it's step by step with wisdom till the very end.

Don't borrow people money because most people don't pay back. Human needs have no end, even if you spend $2bn to meet people's needs, they will still come again. Beware that people always like to take advantage and control so stand your ground and trust no one. Live within your means as you are not obliged to impress or compete with anyone.

13) BEING TOO KIND IS A WEAKNESS : be kind while using your brain. Learn to say "no" and stand your ground and don't lose sleep helping people or at least those that are not worth it. Being kind can backfire.

14) EVERYTHING IS PHYSICAL, NOTHING IS SPIRITUAL : Everything thing is physical and has a physical explanation. Nothing is spiritual and no observation should be attributed to the spiritual. Nothing like "my village people dey do me," if you no make am, no be person dey do you. Many things that people thought were spiritual ended up having physical explanations. Be real. No human being is spiritually endowed with special anointing, supernatural knowledge, spiritual gifts or any of those nonsenses. No one is special and can't do what you can't spiritually. You can't heal terminal cancer therefore no pastor can do the same. You cannot disappear therefore your pastor or native doctor can't. Every person be human being. Throw spiritual nonsenses away.

I feel deeply sorrowful for many Nigerians who cannot afford the vital medicine needed for their healing or recovery , and are then taken advantage of by charlatan church leaders who promise them healing but instead , lead them to the gates of death and sometimes to death itself.

It's not about not having money. Even those who have the money, like myself then, still use faith. I saw a story about two women who could afford medical treatment but believed that their faith had healed them after attending a Benny Hinn crusade. One had cancer and the other had multiple sclerosis. The former ended up dying despite the doctors' advice, she left behind four daughters and her husband and the later was still alive at the time of the documentary. There was also an elderly woman who had cancer. Whether it was terminal or not, I don't know but she ended up donating all her life savings to Kenneth Copeland's ministry all in the name of sowing a seed. She ended up dying and no one knew what she had done until her daughter saw her dairy.

Personal, I know a man that is partially blind because he decided to use faith instead of going to the hospital. His wife told him to go to the hospital but he refused and stubbornly stuck to his faith and his eye defects became worse. There are many cases like this all over the world with many many many many babies and little children dying because their parents refused them medical treatment but you never get to hear much about them because christian apologist, christian authorities and many christians want you to believe that christianity is good and harmless. Apart from sickness and diseases, people make rash and dangerous business decisions and miss out on huge business opportunities because they are trying to follow the will of god. What about those who miss out on marrying the right spouse or broke up with their worthy boyfriend because one fool called pastor told them not marry? What about those who left their marriages or maltreated their wife/husband because one pastor said that their spouse were not right for them or were the cause of their problems? There are many ways in which religion can fvck up people's lives. Read my story and realise that, I, Martinez19 aka Martinez39, could have been dead or least turned to a vegetable if was away in the hostel. Do you know what it means for malaria to run it's course in the human body? May pastors meet terrible endings. angry

Gosh, I will keep on saying the truth about religion and magical thinking. Let's not forget those that have been dumped and manipulated by psychics and spiritualists. Let's not forget those whose lives have been wasted because people thought that kill people will give them money. Lastly, there is a certain part in africa (I can't remember the name) where albinos are discriminated against and are maimed and killed because people believe that killing albinos or using their body parts will make them wealthy or generate effective charms.

A lot of people are confused on what it means to love someone. Some say true love doesn't exist while some believe it does. Some see love from the telenovela perspective and therefore have unrealistic expectations only to keep getting hurt when the telenovela love doesn't happen. There are three kinds of love which are telenovela love, real love and fake love. Let's discuss them :

1) TELENOVELA LOVE : as the name implies, this is kind of love you see in telenovela. To be frank, such love is an illusion and can never exist. Such love has no regards for reasoning and proper planning but follows wherever the feelings lead grin

. Once such love clicks, it promises to last forever unconditionally. People who set this as their standard of love are repeatedly disappointed and hurt. A love that goes all the way with feelings and promises to last forever no matter what without regards to proper planning and reasoning is unrealistic and not advisable. Attempting this love might end up dangerously except if you have money at all times, of course. grin

2) REAL LOVE : this love unfailingly has the following characteristics: 1) it's reasonable, wise, truthful and honest, 2) it doesn't give up easily, 3) it involves sacrifice & is ready to make sacrifices and 4) it involves respect for one spouse. A woman that loves a man can't leave him within a week of losing his job -- real love doesn't give up that easily. A woman that loves a man will not insult and degrade him when he loses his job. A man that loves a woman will not become insultive, abusive and disrespectful towards his wife when she hasn't been able to conceive -- true love respects and supports. True love will not give birth to children that both spouses can't take care of -- true love is reasonable. Real love, because it's reasonable, knows when to quit, because you love someone doesn't mean you should put up with them when they have no respect for you or treat you like trash.

Real love knows that money is needed to pay the bills and take care of children so it will not not lead to marriage and childbearing when there is no source of money from either the man or woman. A woman that loves her man will not insult or look down on him because she is earning more than her man. Real love is not foolish. Real love doesn't have unnecessary standards. Unlike what many people think, this love isn't unconditional but it doesn't give up easily. Also this love doesn't trust blindly, it reasonable. Girls don't go and buy properties and cars in the name of your boyfriend all in the name of love, that's telenovela love. Boys don't go and buy properties and cars in the name of your girlfriend all in the love, heart touching stories are real.

3) FAKE LOVE : this love is selfish, it gives up easily, it has unnecessary and selfish standards and places things over people. It has no respect for people but treats them as properties to get things. The fake love you get from ladies is based on money they can get from you or the opportunities they can get from you. The fake love you get from a guy begins to show itself when you are not able to conceive many years into the marriage or if an accident renders you barren. Sometimes, the man might be a gold digger (yes there are male gold diggers) who would dump you in the trash when you fall into difficulties and marry someone else. Fake love is never grateful and understanding. When your wife leaves you within two days or weeks after you lost your job, she does not have real love for you. When she insults and shames you at the slightest provocation because she is financially better than you or because you are jobless, she doesn't have real love for you.

When she demands that her man must be "higher" than her even if both of them can get along just fine, then that love is not real. That's fake love with unnecessary condition. If boyfriend says that if you don't perform a sexual act (eg. Anal sex), he will leave you, it's not true love. That's fake love with unnecessary conditions. Cheating on your spouse is fake love. Having sex with her and telling her to go for abortion repeatedly with no intention to marry is not true love and it's wickedness. Beating your spouse is fake love because real love is respectful. Marrying her because her father is a billionaire is not real love, obviously.

Fake love cannot sacrifice. If your wife cannot spare some chicken change or can't do it without making a big deal out of it during your hard time then it's not true love. Love in which there is no peace is not true love.
