OLAADEGBU:
How do you know that this bald man represents Charles Darwin, have you physically seen him to know how he looks like?  How are sure that you have not been photoshopped. shocked What is your prove.?

How can you prove that he wrote that book, did you see him write it?  How are you sure that those who claim to be his relatives today are really his relatives, did you take a DNA test? and thats if you could get hold of this so called Charles Darwin himself. cool
I can see that you are into playing games here. . . . grin. . . .Have you found empty tomb you claim still exist?

I remember asking you whether you believe that Charles Darwin existed, you have not given me your answer.  When you do then I might oblige.
Here is a picture of Charles Darwin

He also wrote a book titled the Origin of species. . . . .His relatives exist till this day. . . .Beside stories about the resurrection of Jesus what else do you have as your "evidence"? Where is the empty tomb your claim is still in existence?
Christianity Etc › Re: God And Natural Disaters by mazaje(op): 11:41pm On Jan 17, 2010
The theists' response is the typical damage control to their belief systems as can be seen from the few post from the Christians here. . . . . .Punishment for sin is the reason some people give as reason for natural disasters. . . . . it certainly is biblical,  . . .If you read the bible you will see that the bible God often sent disasters as punishment for sin, whether in the form of disease and pestilence, a victorious enemy or some thing similar to natural disasters. Christians make up all kinds of things that in their minds reconcile the real world with their belief in their imaginary sky daddy.
Christianity Etc › God And Natural Disaters by mazaje(op): 7:12am On Jan 17, 2010
Since most Christians believe that their God is every where and controls everything I will like to know how they reconcile their allegedly all loving, all powerful God with natural disasters that kill people(including innocent children) and destroy their livelihoods? It has nothing to do with human free will. Does God use natural disasters as punishment for sins? If everyone is going to answer at the judgment day according to the Christian claims, what precisely are these dress rehearsals and early recalls about?

Any where there is a natural disasters people are always trying in one way or the other to help each other and provide relief for each other, god is never there to help at all. . . Whenever humanity is destroyed or afflicted, there is only humanity trying to remedy these things. When will people actually do something positive instead of praying and pretending they are doing something?

It is interesting that a cartoon strip is being brought up as evidence shocked
More interesting, the last portion of the cartoon strip shows God sitting on a chair.  Is that what God looks likehuh  At last I have 'seen' God! grin  I now know what he looks like!!!  He has a buttocks which he uses to sit tongue,  maybe intestines like us too? cheesy  I wonder does the intestines digest any food?  What does he eat?  We know he likes roasted meat, because in a lot of places in the old testament, he is said to like the 'sweet smell' of roasting sacrificial animals!! Hmmm
I laughed out loud when I saw the cartoon. . .After claiming that the empty tomb of Jesus still exists the only evidence to show for it is some demented cartoon? grin. . . . .Knock it off OLAADEGBU there are NO evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. . . .NON, NOTHING at all. . . .The empty tomb does not exist NO one has ever seen it, There are stories that say Jesus resurrected from the dead but there is NO evidence for that legendary claim. . . . .If he could easily reject the story that Mohamed flew to heaven on a winged beast, I think he should also reject the story of the resurrection of Jesus until it could be shown to be real.

Heed:
I don't have all of the answers but I need you to really ponder, how else can you reconcile the prosperity of the Dominican Republic and the complete failure of Haiti. Two nations on the same piece of land the Hispaniola island according to Robertson!

Pat Roberston is not the issue here. History reveals the facts about the Haitian independence and as loving as God is, when it is necessary, He always gives humanity abundant warnings on a consistent basis of impending punishment on account of their disobedience. The Bible shows that God sends warnings through several media to a concerned people so that at the end of the day, there will be no excuse if they choose to ignore Him!

Remember that Our God is a Merciful God, but He is also a Judge and Sovereign, showing mercy to whom He chooses. In effect, however we may see it as human beings, there should be NO questioning of His actions! Therefore, God can choose to spare Nigeria while dealing with a Haiti even if there are elements in Nigeria who practice something similar. I don't know much about Haiti but I can attest that there are people who make intercession for Nigeria before This Sovereign God and maybe, just maybe, that is why Nigeria with all of it’s “impossible” issues always gets away when it all seems about to collapse! God does not expect us to be perfect persons or even a perfect nation, all He needs is that person's or nation's heart striving towards perfection.

Friends as I write, I am watching footage of the effects of the earthquake in Haiti and am   keen to warn here that we do not just debate but to reflect on what Pat Robertson has said, That the Haitians chose in the light of their past slavery to enter into a pact with the Devil! You may not like the messenger or even the message but you need to take a step back and  reflect. Bear in mind  that the God Who made you and I, is the same One Who made Haiti, He created Haitians because He still rules in the affairs of men, but why could He possibly allow such a scale of destruction if there was not a spiritual undertone.

Look at it this way…WHAT IF ROBERTSON IS CORRECT?!
So Haiti is poor because of voodoo eh? The earthquake is as a result of your imaginary god's wrath? And Nigeria has people that are offering intercessory prayer on its behalf eh? You guys should carry on with your ridiculous and hopeless delusions. . . . . .

I agree with sauer's selection, although I have not read Nietzsche. May I add The End of Faith by Sam Harris to the pile.
There is also a book edited by by Christopher Hitchens called The Portable Atheist. It is a collection of writing by various people like Omar Khayyam, Thomas Hobbs etc. 47 different articles.
Karen Armstrong :  the History of God, Islam:A Short History and The Bible: A Biography.
I also recommend the Bible (which I have read and not just the bits the pastors and other clergy want you to read), and the Koran. It would certainly help if the theists actually read the whole book and not just selected passages which suit their positions.
True words. . . .

According to the slowpoke called Pat Robertson(700 club) the earth quake in Haiti was as a result of some imaginary pact the people of Haiti signed with some imaginary devil huh huh. . . Instead of showing his compassion and grief over the loss of life, this slowpoke is mocking the victims and causing more division with his deluded incendiary remarks that make no sense at all. . .The same slowpoke is also on record saying that gays and lesbians were responsible for the September 11 attacks on the USA. . . What a slowpoke. . . .

(CNN) -- Pat Robertson, the evangelical Christian who once suggested God was punishing Americans with Hurricane Katrina, says a "pact to the devil" brought on the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Christianity Etc › Re: Religion And Rationality by mazaje(m): 2:10pm On Jan 14, 2010
- Men create the gods after their own image, not only with regard to their form but with regard to their mode of life. (Aristotle)

- God is a word to express, not our ideas, but the want of them. (John Stuart Mill)

- I distrust those people who know so well what god wants them to do, because I notice that it always coincides with their own desires. (Susan B. Anthony)

- And that what we call god's justice is only man's idea of what he would do if he were god. (Elbert Hubbard)

- Man created god in his image: intolerant, sexist, homophobic and violent.

- Man rarely (if ever) manages to dream up a god superior to himself. Most gods have the manners and morals of a spoiled child. (Robert A Heinlein)

- God has always resembled his creators. He hated and loved what they hated and loved and he was invariably found on the side of those in power. (Robert Ingersoll)

- Isn't it ironic? One of the favorite themes of the Christian Conversion Corps is that, if we don't worship a deity, we must be worshiping ourselves. Yet it seems that this is precisely what, in fact, the theists themselves are doing. They worship a god with the same views, ideals, even personality traits as themselves - the god in the mirror. MyJoe:
It is possible, however, that we are programmed to naturally believe in the supernatural, a realm higher than us, the concept of God. Of this, I cannot be certain. Ultimately, belief in God is, like many other important beliefs, an act of faith - faith that should be rooted in personal experience.
I think I will say that people are wired to make things up and present them as explanations to things, events or occurrence they see around them but are unable to explain. If you look at the supernatural entities you will see that the concept it self varies from culture to culture depending on the way of life and thoughts of the people. At some points these supernatural entities were literal beings doing literal things and they could be bargained and negotiated with through religious ceremonies to gain material results. . . . . At other points they were more disembodied energy forces that ran the world in a manner that only marginally noticed humans. . . .  At other points, they were figurative concepts useful for keeping the masses pacified, but not taken seriously by any educated people. . .  At other points, they were different things.

Personally the supernatural is just a made up concept to explain why we can't understand something that someone wants to posit. Theists can and do define and apply attributes that are adhoc and unverifiable. That's why there are so many different interpretations of what a god is and what it thinks. We are not wired to believe in the supernatural. . .We just have cultures that were formed around that concept. . .That concept is fast disappearing in some developed parts of the world. . .
Christianity Etc › Re: Religion And Rationality by mazaje(m): 5:35pm On Jan 11, 2010
As for Religion and rationality here is how I feel it works. . .

There are those who take a literalistic interpretation, that denies virtually all of science and anything that contradictions the mythological claims believed on by "faith". There also are those who have a fear laden tendency to demonize others who are perceived as being antagonistic or in opposition to the in group mindset, this can include science which contradicts literal mythology. Then there is the 3rd group which are the "rational" religious moderates who are constantly redefining their various gods and reducing the meaning of god to a point where it has no impact on the natural universe or they compartmentalize it in a way to simply ignore it out of hand by trying to rationalize what they are being thought, This groups are the ones that will quickly declare things that do not make sense to them and can not be supported at all as allegory or find some other interpretation that best fits their world view or change the original meaning or message of the religious text entirely in their bid to rationalize what their religion actually says or teaches. So the answer is NO. . . Religion is NOT compatible with rationality?

Where are the said evidence for the alleged resurrection of Jesus? Any one seen the empty tomb that is claimed to be in existence yet? Where is the empty tomb any body?. . . .A resurrection would be an incredible event and requires incredible evidence. What we have instead is conflicting statements about the resurrection from the main source of Christian belief - the Bible. A book whose authors that are alleged to be eyewitness but can  not even say where exactly Jesus first appeared to the 11 of them that were written to be alive when he resurrected. . . .The Bible is a proven erroneous document.

So OLAADEGBU you have certainly not met any any burden of proof.

On the contrary accepting something by faith means as a human being you are acknowledging that the issue at stake is beyond human comprehension. It actually takes a lot more faith to beleive there is no God than to believe there is God.
