2nd, the important question you must answer IS: do you actually KNOW what your wife desires/requires in order to be "satisfied"?

hey Bruce, yes you can post this conversation on other websites, no worries. as for China, yes i have lived there for 2yrs, i was based in Beijing 1st and then Shanghai later, but i have traveled extensively to all provinces there, from Urumqi (the Muslim part) to Harbin (the coldest city), Xi'an (terracota warriors) to Lhasa (getway to Xizang), Lanzhou (the most polluted city) to Sanya (the island paradise), i think i have been in about 30 major cities of China... and yes i have been to Qingdao twice, nice beer and great place but, i have to say that for coastal city i fell in love with Dalian (even though there is too many Russians there).

as for the last part, yes many people dont know that when you do business in China, you have to entertain the client/seller, and therefore inviting them for dinner after (or sometimes before) closing a deal is customary, and goes a long way to create a solid partnership (just like bringing a small gift)

Regarding to the section A) of your comments. I can't agree more with the first two sentences. But the last sentence, I don't agree with the word "many". No one can deny there are cheating people in China, like elsewhere in the world. However, the word "many" may leave a false impression that there are a high percentage of international sellers are cheating. In fact, as far as I know, the cheating people are a very tiny percentage.

True, there are a lot of cheating people in China, but most of them CAN'T speak English or other foreign languages. So there aren't many of them in the international business community.

My advice is no matter how do you think of the supplier, start by making a small order, then increase the order gradually. In such course, you will know more information of the supplier and the whole industry in China. This will help you make better decisions.

i feel what you are saying but the issue here is that you have to do business like the Chinese do... so 1st they will always try to sell you some 2nd rated product for the top prices, and 2nd you always have to bargain the price down, ALWAYS! this is like a way of life in China and if you dont haggle the price down then you will always be short changed. EVERYONE will try to overprice you (aka the "Laowai", every single one of them, whether you are buying a dvd at a street corner or the local suya... and you just have to accept that fact and be prepared for it.

and as i said earlier, if you cant speak Chinese then find someone who does, so that THEY can do business in China for you. in China, after sealing a big deal, the seller will normally entertain you with dinner and possible Karaoke (also known as KTV), nightclub or hookers. thats the China way!
