Tension As Policeman Shoots Driver in Onitsha…Hoodlums Attack Hausas

caption: Bus driver killed by police
From Okodili Ndidi, Onitsha

The fragile peace in the commercial city of Onitsha was yesterday disrupted as residents took to the streets in protest of the killing of a bus driver suspected to be a member of the Movement of the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) by policemen in one of the illegal checkpoints.

According to an eyewitness account, the incident occurred when driver of a coaster bus with registration number AA 768AHD, simply identified as Edwin, escaped a checkpoint by ABS junction, and was pursued by one of the policemen who caught up with him and deflated his tires and subsequently shot him on the neck, killing him instantly.

The conductor of the bus, Samuel Ekwueme, who was weeping profusely, said that the driver, gave the policemen N20 which they refused and insisted that he should give them N50, “my oga said that he had paid in the previous trip and drove off but we did not know that one of them was following us on a motorbike and he intercepted us and shot my oga on the neck and quickly escaped”.

It was gathered that another passenger in the bus sustained bullet wounds when the trigger happy cop opened fire on the bus before he escaped.

The situation however took a dangerous turn when the angry mob comprising of drivers and okada riders, went on a rampage with the corpse of the driver , attacking Hausas and looting their shops in possible reprisal.

The bus was said to be fully loaded with passengers who took off from Nkpor junction and was heading to the Ose Main market, Onitsha when the incident happened as the passengers scampered for safety.

One of the passengers who gave her name as Ifeoma Obi told The Nation that the deceased did not do anything that warranted his murder, adding “its was just pure wickedness on the side of the policeman who because of just N20 wasted this young man’s life”

She also said that when the policeman first shot at the tires of the vehicle, the deceased who was the driver could not move again, a situation she said helped the killer cop to shoot at the deceased from closed range, shattering the glass of the vehicle.

However, the situation took an ethnic coloration as drivers and other hoodlums in the commercial city went on rampage demanding the elimination of Hausa people on the ground that the policeman who shot the deceased was a Hausa man.

The situation also escalated when the angry mob descended on the police team earlier sent by the Anambra state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhtari Ibrahim to reach and appeal to the rampaging crowd which led to the policemen retreating to avoid further casualties.

It was gathered that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Central Police Station, Mr. Abdul Yusuf escaped death by the whiskers when the angry mob descended on him when he led his men to the scene of the incident.

The angry mob also went on the rampage in different parts of the commercial city hunting for Hausa people who led to many of them taking refuge at the Central Police Station, CPS and other police stations within the city, with many others around the Bridgehead crossing over to Asaba, the Delta state capital.

Reacting to the Development, the new Igbo leader, Chief Ralph Uwazurike advised the members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB not to touch any Hausa people buts should dismantle every police check points within the area with immediate effect.

According to Chief Uwazurike who spoke through his second in command, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, the dismantling of all police check point became necessary at a time when the safety of Ndigbo is no longer safe even in their land.

“ For a Hausa policeman to kill an Igbo driver here because of mere N20 shows that the policeman is a Boko Haram member but we have urged MASSOB members to leave Hausa people alone because they are not our problem, they should concentrate on dismantling all police check points within the area” he said.

Meanwhile when contacted, the Anambra state Police Commissioner, Mr. Muhtari Ibrahim said the killer cop had been arrested and will soon undergo orderly room trial and prosecution and called on the rampaging crowd to calm down as efforts to resolve the matter had commenced.

Lastly, if you need a figure to work with, to start up a standard retail outlet from scratch will require anything from 700k to well over a million.
Career / Re: Pharmacists And Pharmaceutical Aspirants by muyoto: 10:24pm On Feb 08, 2012
@dan_dollar, though I'm not currently in the retail business, I guess I can share one or two points from my little knowledge. . .

I would say apart from telecoms and perhaps oil industry, there no other as lucrative as the pharmaceutical industry, and by extension, retail/community outlets. . .that takes care of the first part of your question.

Note that since you are not a pharmacist, you cannot operate a retail pharmacy outlet, unless you are able to get a qualified pharmacist to run the business whose practicing licence will be used to register the premises. I suppose that's where your relative who you say is a pharmacist comes in, but note he will only be given the full license after he's through with internship.

If you do get a qualified pharmacist, there are many factors however that will determine how successful your own outlet will be.

This entails undertaking, as it is with all business, a comprehensive feasibility study. Paramount is the location of the outlet, which is directly related to the type of clientele and the ease with which you will be able to source your commodities.

The amount of capital at your disposal is also another crucial factor, as this will determine the type of commodities you will stock.

Equally related the number and quality of competitors in the locality you intend to situate the business. By quality I mean the nature of other outlets in the vicinity: are they patent stores, small scale pharmacies or established retail outlets.

this is by no means exhaustive, it just to give a idea. . . wink

@muyoto I tot most of ur coursemates were on nairaland with the rate dey share news coming from here on facebook. Anyway it ws nice meeting u. Please Wat kind of questions are asked in interviews for internship? University of abuja teaching hospital will conduct theirs on wednesday nextweek and I don't  seem to have a clue on wat dey might ask. Do I need to read textbooks or wat? Pls reply me.

Sorry I've not been on NL for some time.

As regards the interview, I don't think you have anything to worry about especially as it relates to pharmacy practise. Their questions are usually elementary and straight forward (eg classes of antihypertensives and example of each)

You might however, want read up some current affairs. . . eg current minister of so and so. Some centres, eg UBTH, are also known to include teasers, not related to pharmacy, which are aimed at gauging your critical thinking skills.

The competition at Abuja is pretty stiff, but I'm sure you'll scale through. All the best!  smiley

Crime / Re: Sa Woman 'steals' Baby From Pregnant Woman. . . by muyoto: 10:35pm On Jan 27, 2012
another account says the lady had pretended to be pregnant before carrying out the gruesome act:

The stomach of a 34-year-old woman was cut open with a sharp object and her baby taken out. The suspect was later arrested when she showed up at a clinic with a newborn baby with a cut on its head,” police spokeswoman Appel Ernst told reporters.

Ms Ernest went on to say that the baby had been retrieved and was doing well in hospital, but the mother had not survived the attack.

It has been reported that neighbours of Ms Cooke said she pretended to be pregnant for months before attacking the expectant mother, and she even threw herself a baby shower a week before she cut the child from the deceased’s womb.

Ms Cooke is expected to make a bail application on February 7th

A baby has incredibly survived being sliced from her mother's womb during a brutal attempt to steal the unborn child in South Africa.

Police initially thought victim Valencia Behrens, 34, had bled to death after giving birth when they found her blood-soaked body.

But they could not find her newborn baby at the scene allegedly in neighbour Loretta Cooke's house.
Randfontein-South-Africa

Gruesome: Police are investigating the horrific events surrounding the discovery of Valencia Behrens' blood-soaked body Randfontein, near Johannesburg

Local medical staff alerted police when Cooke, 29, from Randfontein, in west Johannesburg, brought the child in for a check-up at a clinic.

The baby has suffered a slash to her head.

Cooke was arrested and remanded in custody while state prosecutors investigate the gory case.

Police spokesman Appel Ernest said a postmortem revealed the horrific nature of the crime.

She said: 'We received an emergency call from one of the neighbours that a baby had been born in a house.

'We found a lady lying in a pool of blood. During the investigation we found out she had been cut open. Her baby was removed. We were told she had bled out during childbirth, but we couldn’t find the baby.'

* Father watches in horror as daughter, 10, is grabbed and eaten by crocodile

Initial investigations soon led to the arrest of Cooke, who appeared yesterday in the Randfontein Magistrates Court, where bail was denied.

The child's father Joseph Pieterse told reporters of his devastation at his girlfriend's murder and relief that his fifth child - named Maxine Mercy Pieterse - had survived the horrific ordeal.

He said: 'At least she is fine and healthy.'

Mr Pieterse added: 'She is doing well. Her scar is healing nicely. Maybe later she will come home to us.'

Baby Maxine was being treated in hospital after sustaining knife wounds to her head.

The case has been postponed to February 7.

I laugh at those who said fertilizer is a common farming tool. For your information fertilizer in its pure state is AN(Amonium nitrate) if you simply mix it wit AGO , you have the deadly ANFO used by boko haram to cause destruction. With a blasting cap you have made a bomb. The people are clearly Boko haram members

stop displaying your ignorance. the common NPK fertilizer seen in these parts contain negligible ammonium nitrate whose purity is nowhere near the grade needed for making an explosive device. Even if we assume it was being taken somewhere for extraction and purification, the facilities needed for such are pretty high tech--not just any lab.

however, i do agree there may be something fishy here. that they were traveling in an official vehicle with arms would surely raise eyebrows
