Car TalkRe: Why Do People Like To Take Mechanic To Inspect A Car Before Buying? by nurey(m): 11:11am On Jun 01, 2020
ameristu:
This seems to be a commong trend among Nigerians, while it is not a bad idea and you can trust your mechanic, know at the back of your mind that mechanics only make money and earn their living when car breaks down, so them hoping for a car not to break down does not bring food to their table. Just like a doctor praying no one gets sick, how would they eat or a lawyer praying no one gets in trouble. How would they pay their child's school fees.

Just my 2 cents.
Putting myself in the mechanic shoes, when I used to work as a computer engineer I had job of helping people decide what system to buy and also fixing old desktop computers. I don't think any handy work man would have time to receive same complaint from same property everyday, you will be tired and put yourself in a position of "do I know my job!"

so don't think a mechanic would see a very problematic vehicle and urge the buyer to buy because he wants to be fixing and profiting everyday

Lol. Car has since been sold.
Glow plug relay wiring got shorted out. Diagnosis from electrician was that the whole fuse box needed to be changed. Getting the fuse box was a challenge. Relay was connected direct and problems still persisted.
I park vehicle begin drive the mdx. No Time.
Car was sold last year.
New owner removed the engine and put in a petrol engine.
Turned out cylinders were a bit scoured which leads me to believe the cylinders had low compression.
The glow plug tips were also burnt out which may have contributed to the scouring as the tips fell into the engine.
Sad end to a much loved car.

9icetoo:
The rains in pH didn't help. I have touched everything except the timing of the car so I decided to try out what I had read on a TDI forum.
I adjusted the camshaft timing by turning it counter clock wise.
When I tried starting the car, the engine revolved faster than it usually does but this time, there was no white smoke coming out of the exhaust. While cranking I was observing the instant fuel consumption display and realised it remained stuck at zero. Usually, the readout goes to about 0.8liters/minute and car fires up.

This means diesel wasn't being injected.

I adjusted the camshaft fully clockwise, this time the fuel display showed 1.1litres/minute during crank and car started after a prolonged crank.

Well, I burnt out my starter while doing this.

However, it made me realise that my issue is with timing. I have ordered for a timing belt kit.
Will use a mechanic to install when it arrives. That type of work is above my pay grade. Will also replace the bad starter. It actually brought out smoke. grin

I am not a specialist of any car though.

When going out with the car on long journey I don't buy less than 10k worth of fuel then not that I even use it finish.

I normally run city driving just joy ride the car around town and enjoy the many available facilities it has to offer.

I don't really expect you to be concerned about fuel economy people who buy such cars are only concerned about performance from the engine and status it would give them.

Your picture shows a 4.2L V8 and a 6.0L W12 there is no V12 there.

The W12 is a very responsive engine power on demand racer, competition destroyer. Fuel economy is Manage-per-gallon grin

But if the engine spoil for your hand, my brother nah millions of naira be that, for all it's worth for the 3months I had the phaeton at my Beck and call never had engine problem, most issues had to do with electrical issues.

I wise Nairalanders. Please I need review on the car Audi S8 2007. Am an ardent fan of Audi and I got an Audi A4 around November last year which have spent a fortune fixing different issue since I bought it, from water collector to brain box. Infact just last week out of no money I still spend over 200k buying brain box etc. I intend buying another Audi since to me Audi is elegant and beauty and won't even let people know how heavy your machine is. Now issue is am thinking about about Audi S8 2007 what do you guys think of this car and is there anyone who have used it before? The maintenance and other factor about it nko. And I need to know the landing cost of this car

Audi S8 is in the league of S class, an advice from someone who drove and cared for a VW phaeton with W12 engine.

1. The S8 is a very luxurious vehicle and in high class, the maintenance is only pocket friendly when you do the right thing at the right time.

2. It needs a good technician to handle it's issues when they arise, someone calm and patient who find out things before dabbling into it.

3. When something breaks the part are a bit on the high side though depending may be hard to source locally but eBay got your back.

4. Depending on how often the car is used, things do fail often but gives warning and never breakdown but goes into limp mode.

from your statement if you can dool out 200k at a go without soaking garri for a month then buy a clean title, low mileage well maintained Audi S8 unit

Oh, wow. So, just the RPM needle can be faulty? Thanks for this heads up. I have not scanned the car personally before, usually take it to workshops. I will explain what you just advised when I take it to a workshop. Two questions, nurey:

(A) If we establish that the needle is faulty, does that mean I'm getting an entire new display (or what''s that section called sef)?

(B) What about the intermittent hesitation and the PO 446 Evap code nko?

Thanks for your time, nurey.
A. you will need a new instrument cluster or the rewire would fix the needle if it is not a board panel problem .

B. intermittent hesitation needs a physical diagnosis for that, physical inspection then solution to your problem

B2. That code for solara V6 is solved by changing the charcoal cannister located behind the fuel tank under the vehicle. Either over filling the fuel tank has destroyed the cannister or you have a leak around there.

Good day my fellow Nairalanders.

First off, thank you Gazzuzz for opening this cerebral vehicle troubleshooting thread. My respect also goes out to all other intelligent (and sometimes cocky, grin) contributors that I've met along the journey of reading this thread from page 1 to 304.

So, all car wizards in the house, especially Toyota, abeg make una help a brother out. The thing is, my RPM is really giving me cause for concern. The idle is low, by any petrol car standard, yet it does not vibrate or stall. No, nothing like that. It's an old lady, quite old. But we've been lucky by cherry picking the type of Kazeems that have worked on it in the past.

Long and short of my epistle: Toyota technician referral needed. I have been driving around Lagos with RPM as low as 400 even with AC sef, car no dey vibrate. It bothers me more when the only code on it when it was scanned is an Evap: PO 446. People of god, abeg how do I go about this code and resolving it. This car no dey worry, but I know say na old age dey do am. Epp me, if anyone knows a reliable Toyota specialist in Lagos. On a scale of Kazeem to Gazzuzz, I'd prefer the person to be in the Gazzuzz range, biko. Na old car I get, I no kee persin grin.

See few details of car below and pictures.

Toyota Solara, XLE, 1999; V6-3.0L Engine. Auto Tranny. Shipped in from the US about 10-11 years ago.

-Car briefly hesitates indiscriminately some times when driving, then it smooths out. This started like 4 months ago.
-History of DTCs: 41 & 42 ABS (resolved) Evap PO 446 (on and off), current code. No other ones that me I know of sha.
-Recurring low idle RPM for about a year now; since issue started, NEVER gone beyond 500. Most times it's 400.
-More on the RPM: it idles between 100 & 200 MOST mornings when cold; but observed it idles around 600-700 in the afternoons ie usually when the temperature is higher. I know this may sound crazy, but that has been my observation. Don't know what to do again o.
-It gets crazier: I believe it should vibrate excessively at such low RPMS, but it doesn't, even with my AC.
-It speeds up pretty good for a 1999 vehicle: I seemingly catch up with much newer cars on the highway without much effort from my engine
-No history of overheating that I know of, but seems coolant in reservoir overflows at times as I observe precipitation on the plastic. I don't know why.
-Fuel consumption: Mm, Tank is 70L. At 145 naira, it cost me 10,150. Usually top it up with 5k after two weeks of driving (say home to my office, about 11.2km to & fro per day) because needle would be half way on the fuel gauge by then.
-Changed the PCV recently; although the old one looks physically different (Don't know if that matters sha) from the new one, but if fitted in nicely.

Thanks you for your contributions, I will take eet in good faith cool. By the way, big ups to: Radautoworks, Kingreignn, smartchoiice, dru23, nurey, diportivo, thebigkendo, autoelectng, weyreypey and all other gurus in this space. have you confirmed the rpm reading using a scan tool? Your rpm needle could be faulty.

use a scan tool to read the rpm when can is working to confirm where the error is coming from

New engine mounts would reduce vibration not totally eradicate it and the mounts won't last upto 6 months.

But tokunbo mounts would last year's if your mechanic knows what he is doing

Good evening everyone,

So I purchased this naija used DC two weeks ago and after use for two weeks I noticed the following issues and need our advice:

- Catalyst converter is absent ( car sucks fuel FAST)
- Brake disc appears bad as brake pedal vibrates when pressed whilst on speed
- Engine and gear mount are gone
- Brake pedal appears to go down whilst pressed, but removing the leg and pressing it again ensures it catches.
- When raising the engine it appears one of the plugs is misfiring.
- Car battery is BAD

***Discussed this with mech on my street, who said:***

- Engine and gear mount is 7k and 5k respectively (new from Oladipo), workmanship to change this: 3k
- No idea of brake disc and wants to involve a master brake technician
- the Honda misfire is normal, that DC usually fires (when marching throttle) that way
- no idea of Honda catalyst cost

===========================================

Want to use said car for taxify (pointless telling me about the downside of using DC for taxify, already weighed my options)...however I dont want to spend much on these repairs.

What's our advice.

Thinking of just driving said car to Oladipo and do buy n fix.

When you buy ensure the radiator bypass has been done or you do the radiator bypass yourself. After that you give the elders matching ground fee and carry your Xterra paint the town red cause nah machine of the boys.

4.0L V6 is not a fuel efficient engine on an off-road vehicle your other parameters the Xterra pass with flying colors

it definitely could be better. When taking tight bends there’s some body roll at first, but when you stay on it or push a little bit harder it gets more stable. Probably the awd system kicking in. I just wish they shaved some weight off this car!
They have extracted more than enough juice from the engine, exceeding the threshold would mean putting a bigger transmission probably 9gear transmission meaning more heavy weight.

You can turn yours into a track ready killer, throw out
1. All the seats except drivers seat
2. remove the extra tyre and every available weight in the boot
3. rip out the AC system
4. Cut off the catalyst and exhaust pot, put in a straight pipe.

with all those gone you reduce your launch time to 4s grin

you have been hearing scan scan your car on NL well the OBD port is where you plug the scanner to retrieve codes from a vehicle. The Almera engine or should I say most Nissan engines of that class (Almera, sunny, Sentra, bluebird syphls etc) experience camshaft and crankshaft sensor wahala so it's better to scan and be sure it's those sensor to make work easy for the mechanic.

before I forget the 00-03 Almera were known for timing chain troubles which was corrected in 04 upwards. But I used a 00 and never had that issue mine came from Belgium sha.

What I have in mind is that N16, my budget is 500-600k as a young engineer

Will I get a reliable onehuh
N16 direct LHD is 1.2m

RHD is between 1m to 800k depending on your bargaining power it may be less. conversion is around 250k. I don't like converted onces because of bypass.

Most N16 are from Europe how you know a N16 Europe and original LHD with sunny badge is by the reverse light, one is red other opaque for Almera but the sunny (bought new in naija) has opaque as both.

I would say buy the Sentra which is same vehicle in different coat and the Sentra has very solid body work but the Almera SVE and the hatchback shape is tempting and very enticing.

Your budget would buy a naija used but ensure if converted the OBD port still works
