That's the oil industry for you. While working offshore, I still didn't understand enough about these terms so I decided to do a masters in this field in Norway where Statoil hails from.
Oil and gas is not just about engineering alone, the oil field contract agreement types between the shareholders and the government are very different even in the same country. Some are Joint ventures like the Qua Iboe fields while most deep water fields in Nigeria are PSCs (Production Sharing Contracts).
Several oil companies come together to invest in and develop an oil field.
Statoil is a shareholder in Agbami oilfield just like Chevron and Petrobras. Chevron is the operator (runs the day to day production and maintenance of the field and platform). Major decisions made require inputs from all partners in the field.
Statoil has about 20% stake in Agbami but this ruling has reduced their stake to about 15%. So they have to pay the value of about 5% to the beneficiaries.

My questions for you are:

When I read stuffs like this I shake my head for Africans. Those who have the money are usually wiser by having just two kids to help them plan well. While those whose income tends towards zero are the ones making unwise decisions by bringing more loads than their shoulders can carry.
When I see how I'm still afraid to start a family for fear of not giving them the best (because Nigerian ladies don't bring much to the table) despite the amount I make a month, and compare it others who choke their lives on peanuts, I just wonder the more.

This is totally wrong. Do not misinform the public. Even manufacturers will tell you the best way to use a gadget is to charge it, drain the battery, and charge it again.
I have used my current laptop for 4 years now and the battery still lasts for almost 4hrs before it shows low battery. Same applies to most of the phones I have used. While my friends who leave it plugged to the charger regularly can't even get 30 minutes of battery life for their 1 year old laptops.

You don't need to send any money to them in your second year as you already live here. Renewing your study permit for the second year is no big deal. All you need to attach to your application is your bank statement showing that amount. Simple!

I doubt this amount is still 4.7m in naira. Norwegian kroner gained more value against the dollar from last year due to rise in oil prices. So the required 111,657 nok should be about $14,500 now compared to about $13,000 it was last year. And I understand that the banks give out fx at 360/$. So you guys should prepare yourselves with about 5.2m.
Anyone who has successfully sent their funds at much lower naira equivalent can disprove my estimates.

The global financial crisis of 2008 and the fuel price drop of 2015 both revealed that Nigeria cannot stand a shock of a global magnitude and on the local front the so called herdsmen crisis, Boko Haram, organized crime, epileptic power supply, poor health facilities, poor supply of effective high level manpower and poor educational institutions all show that even locally we do not have an necessary fundamentals to foster a market emerging economy. Nigerians expected the government to display an aggressive style of governance towards addressing these ills but from the trajectory we are currently I do not see the Buhari government addressing these issues even in his second tenure. Sadly Buhari does not have a worthy replacement as it was during the last election.

However, in Nigeria's case, the increasing forex reserves are largely to do with the recovery in oil prices and, more importantly, the depreciation of the Naira from circa N155 to $1 to N360 to $1. The latter acted as a curb on imports by reducing the purchasing power of the average Nigerian, whilst the recovery in oil prices allowed the CBN to replenish the reserves. This is why the comparison between now and the GEJ era is ignorant - you are comparing levels of forex reserves at vastly different exchange rates.

The example I have often cited before is the Abacha era when forex reserves increased from $500m to $7bn at one point (an increase of 1300%). This wasn't because of sound economic policies. This was largely due to the collapse in the Naira as we went from N22 to $1 to N85 to $1. This curbed imports and helped replenish the reserves. Put simply, you can save money by starving yourself (arguably starvation to death saves money) but that is not living. Policies which cause the collapse of the Naira and significantly reduce living standards do not become vindicated because of an uninformed fixation with forex reserves.

It's debates like these that illustrate that the Nigeria's problem isn't solely about the quality of political leadership but is also about a hopelessly uninformed electorate. To celebrate forex reserves against a backdrop of collapse in both living standards and the purchasing power of the average Nigerian is a celebration of abject ignorance.

At the second bolded, you are equally being ignorant if not worse. It's called foreign reserves not local reserves, which means it's denominated in foreign currency (mainly USD) and not naira. Meaning the amount in the reserve has nothing to do with the prevailing exchange rate. Even if exchange rates go up, people adjust to the new rate and pass on the difference to the consumers which leads to inflation. People don't stop importing except the government doesn't give out fx anymore.
Like I said, your ignorance is far worse than the average Nigerian. Venezuela is down to its last $10b of foreign reserve and as a result its currency is almost useless with concurrent hyperinflation. Before 2014, $1 = 10 vef. Now $1 = 205,000 vef. Venezuelans have been running to neighbouring Colombia and other neighbours to avoid starvation because the government can no longer import basic foods and medicines since 2015.
Foreign investors do not bring foreign currency into a country that has low reserves because of fear that they can't repatriate their money when they want to.

PS: Nigeria would have been heading to a refuse dump of economic crisis like venezuela if Jonathan had continued beyond 2015 as he added nothing to us but looted virtually everything in sight. Those who know know. Buhari's emergence put a major halt against our then impending economic crisis that all economists (including Okonjo, Sanusi and Soludo) had been warning us about if oil prices crash.

Let me explain this in simple terms. Amassing Foreign Reserve in a time of hyper inflation is bad economics. People will continue to suffer because they country isn't producing anything.

Good financial management is to invest capital projects to produce more. That will arrest the problem of inflation as the Nigeria begins to stabilize against other currencies. With the present state of the economy, the naira will remain worthless, relative to other currencies. Soon,a loaf of bread would sell for N500.00, if they don't invest in infrastructure, boost production , heaping up foreign reserves will remain bad decision.

Firstly, Nigeria is experiencing deflation, not hyperinflation. Inflation has been going down since last year from about 19%.
Secondly, all the borrowing of this government has been going to infrastructure while much of the foreign earnings from oil have been adding to our increasing foreign reserves.
Lastly, this is the highest capital investment I've witnessed in Nigeria since 1999. You should check out tons of projects being built by the ministries of Power, works and housing as well as Transport. Check @FMPWH on twitter for a start.

After the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Electricity distribution companies are next on the list when it comes to corruption. This has been in existence from time immemorial, just like barracks, many government have come and gone but the deep rooted corruption in the system remains


In April 2016, I moved in to my current apartment. The apartment was still connected to an old meter and there was an outstanding payment of about N385,000.00 to be paid. This wasn't revealed to me before I made payment for the rent, as usual (that's how they all do).This became a worry and an absolute headache. I asked the landlord why it was so and she made me understand that the apartment was not in use for 5years.I asked how come it wasn't reported to NEPA so they'd stop the billing, she gave me a copy of the letter she wrote to them. So I took the matter up, wrote several mails to Eko electricity company and the matter was on for 11months, note that in the space of this 11 months, I never got a monthly bill lesser than 24,000.00. You want to ask if I have a factory in my apartment? No I don't. So it extended from wanting the company to zerorize the ridiculous outstanding balance in the billing account to fighting and contesting the outrageous billing system which do not in any way represent my true electricity consumption and wanting a Prepaid Meter

The battle began.
After several exchange of mails betweens myself and Eko Electric and no solution was forthcoming, I moved the matter to NERC, the regulatory body for all electricity distribution companies in Nigeria. I filed a petition against Ekedp and the undertaking in charge of my area.

Lo and behold, after three days from the petition submission to NERC, I got a call from the marketing manager for my area pleading for me to make myself available to allow them come to my house and take inventory of the electrical appliances I use.

NERC is working yeah? Right. A staff of the Ekedp came to take the inventory and at the end of the computations, we calculated and multiplied each appliance by the estimated units they consume per day and multiplied by 31days.

Recall I said I never got a bill less than 24k in a month?Then we arrived at a figure that even the Eko electric staff who came to take the inventory opened his mouth and couldn't close it. What I should be billed based on having 24hour light per day(which is not even possible) in 31 days was 4,800.00. I almost ran mad. I took a copy of the report, scanned it and attached it to my next petition to NERC.
At this point, the marketing manager attached to my undertaking had started calling and begging me to stop the petitions. That they could all get sacked if matters gets escalated further.Then in September 2017, after all the troubles and how I never got tired if pursuing the issue, I got a mail from Eko electricity to come with some required documents in order to fill a form for a PREPAID METER.

I went there and did as they requested.
At Last, on 27 November 2017, I was on leave.
I was at my gate then this Alfa looking guy was parading and trying to see house number on the fence. My instinct told me to ask if he was asking for Ayo, then he said yes. He was the prepaid meter installer, he was with my new prepaid meter. I also recall that before the whole issue started, I was discouraged severally that I can never be given prepaid meter due to the outstanding balance on the billing account, I paid no mind to all the people that said that and went ahead with my case.
I got the Prepaid meter for FREE. After a week, bill was brought and boom, outstanding balance has been cleared from 385,000.00 to zero balance.
How did I achieve this? I mean I didn't pay a dime to anyone and I never for once bribed my way in all my dealings.I achieved this simply because;

1. I knew my right.
2. I wouldn't settle for mediocrity
3. I never stopped pushing even after several months and it seemed unachievable
4. I was ready to take the matter up anywhere
5. I was informed.

Now imagine how many people are out there who don't even know how to go about such tedious and draining process. I learnt that a lot of people even paid as much as 40k to get the prepaid meter. Something that's supposed to be free. Since the prepaid meter was installed in November 27 2017, I have not exhausted the 303 units that came with it which is calculated to be 7,200.00

And I still have 140units left to use. That's over four (4) months now
Do you now see why these people will never allow dream of every homes having a prepaid meter become a reality?
Because such development will block all holes where the electricity distribution corrupt members of staff perpetrate their fraudulent activities and corruption from.

They know that they will be forced to give light more in order to generate revenue and will not be able to charge people outrageously as they are currently doing and remitting the proceeds of their criminal act to their pockets.

Stand up and Fight for what is your right. Prepaid meter is your right, fight for it to the latter. If you believe that your monthly electricity bill do not represent your consumption, make a case.If you're in Lagos, Ikeja Electricity company and Eko electricity company are there for you. If they fail, involve NERC.

Inasmuch as I hate injustice and corruption, the Nigerian situation is peculiar, annoying and draining. I have tried to fight this EKEDC people before, but as one who has lots of serious ambitions to chase as well, I just let it go.
Why does one have to go through all the stress you went through just for what is right and normal to be done? In other climes, doing the right thing is just like drinking water. It doesn't even come to their brain to do the wrong thing.
The annoying part is that after you get justice, the EKEDC people don't change their ways. They just continue as before and quickly adjust again when they encounter another person willing to go through this long, stressful path.
Can we now see why Nigeria will never develop? The answer is Nigerians... not the government.

You can only negotiate with who wants to be negotiated with. Bokoharam carried out those kidnaps because they wanted to be negotiated with and secure more money for their operations as well as the return of their members in return.
They strongly believe in what they do, that they are executing the work of Allah. You can't negotiate with that.

The problem with African pple is that we're too shallow and mediocre in our thinking. Most 9ja pple residing abroad (Western world / developed nations) come back home to live a premium lifestyle they can hardly afford.

You see them devour a 12-mth saving within a matter of a 2-week vacation in 9ja. Just imagine! They live beyond their means in other to
live/measure-up to the "just-arrived" hype. No be by force. They come to 9ja and can no longer take danfo or BRT as a means of transport... like the innocent 9ja folks using it are 2nd-class citizens. They can no longer go to bed without 24/7 A/C.

They come back home to 9ja and can't go back to that wretched 'face-me-I-face-you' abode they once lived in (where their parents and families still live). They move around with an entourage... a personal driver, 'vampire' friends/relatives et al... they can't deal with the shame of seeing their fellow friends that never left 9ja doing great... so they feel the need to at least match-up.

They give the folks back home in 9ja a delusional impression of an imaginary luxury life they live abroad... who now in turn, expect so much from them. Of course, they got to live up to the hype.

Above all.... majority of the culprits are those doing menial/odd jobs living on meager incomes. They're usually like that.. the poorer they are, the dumber they behave. It's called "Poverty Mentality" !

After all is said and done, they go back with huge debt and bills awaiting them... ( I trust 'dem dem' for there)

While a number of people who travel to Nigeria for holidays may be living for the hype (especially those who never imagined a life abroad), it's not always the case.
You don't expect someone who has excellent, neat and on time buses or trains in Scandinavia for example to visit Nigeria and be willing to firstly hustle for or jump on moving old, rickety danfos in Nigeria, where the seats stain your clothes, the drivers are willing to manage a damaged brake that may lead to accident, and all the other drama that come with danfo buses. BRT should be a minimum. When you live a very easy and convenient life abroad, you'll do the same when you visit naija.
Secondly, we have Uber and Taxify now which are very comfortable (with AC in a very hot Nigeria) and super cheap especially compared with taxi fares abroad. Paying between N1500 to 3000 for people earning in superior currencies is nothing.
When you sleep without electricity and soak yourself in your sweat, you will tell yourself that hotel fee is just $20 after all.
Lastly, visiting Nigeria for holidays shouldn't be expensive for people abroad, except that Nigerians like to beg for money a lot, especially from those who have travelled abroad.
