Career / Re: Injustice At Workplace; Should I Resign Or Hang On? by orimahspence: 2:14pm On Jul 20, 2023
hydenmatt007:
Experiencing injustice at the workplace can be incredibly challenging and emotionally draining. Deciding whether to resign or hang on in such a situation depends on various factors and requires careful consideration. Here are some steps to help you make an informed decision:

Evaluate the Situation: Take a step back and objectively assess the extent of the injustice and its impact on your well-being and career. Consider the nature of the injustice, the frequency, and whether it's affecting your physical and mental health.

Talk to Someone: Discuss your concerns with a trusted colleague, friend, family member, or mentor. Getting an outside perspective can provide valuable insights and support.

Document Incidents: Keep a record of any incidents related to the injustice, including dates, times, individuals involved, and details of what happened. This documentation may be useful if you decide to escalate the issue to human resources or higher authorities.

Review Company Policies: Familiarize yourself with your company's policies and procedures for reporting workplace issues. Many organizations have mechanisms in place for handling grievances and ensuring a safe work environment.

I am so sorry about your friend. If and when your friend is sure of their unavailability to attend the appointment, she could have periodically be on the lookout for future dates that are before August but later than May and reschedule. But since time is not on her side anymore, if she could swap dates with someone with a later appointment that is before August. Otherwise, last option would be to cancel the appointment last minute and be on the lookout for dates subsequently ( ps: I am in need of a Lagos date as my start date is June, so if your friend is willing to help, please let me know)

How do you swap a date ?

Foreign Affairs / Re: Countries With The Biggest Debts In The World (Photos) by orimahspence: 9:34pm On Mar 03, 2023
Many people believe that much of the U.S. national debt is owed to foreign countries like China and Japan, but the truth is that most of it is owed to Social Security and pension funds right here in the U.S. This means that U.S. citizens own most of the national debt. The majority of the national debt is debt held by the public. 1 The government owes it to buyers of U.S. Treasury notes including individuals, companies, and foreign governments. The remaining portion is intragovernmental debt.

U.S.A is a great country no doubt but like you said, there are areas in which I would take Canada over USA any day.

Oh thanks. That means the visa approval has nothing to do with the type of residency someone has in US right.

You do not need a visa to enter Canada if you are a U.S. Green card holder.

Borgamaame:
Left the restaurant around 8:15 or 8:30pm and continued my journey to Toronto.
Streetlights on freeways (highways): I was surprised to see that the freeway (highway) had street lights. When I was in Ohio for a short visit, I found that you only see streetlights on freeways at intersections or where there are exits. This was same when I visited Maryland. Don't get me wrong. Some streets have streetlights but not the freeways especially interstate roads (that connect states). Anyway, I was happy to see the streetlights for a long stretch.

Road network: The interstate route I plied had about 3-5 lanes (going) and same for vehicles going the opposite direction. Quite similar with the US states I have visited so it wasn't a hassle navigating the roads. I noticed that unlike the US, some roads do not have rumble stripes (they are like engravings at the edge of roads that prevent drivers from running off the roads. Once your tires get on it, it feels like you are running on railway tracks). It is a cost-effective road safety measure most roads I have plied in the US have. I found this is not the case in Ontario. I stand to be corrected.

License: As long as you have a US national driver's license (I mean an all-state license), you can drive in Canada for I think up to 3-6 months with it. States in the US issue different licenses that do not necessarily allow you drive in other states except you opt in for a National Driver's license. Since I had my license, I only had to maintain the rules (speed limit, etc).

Op …Pls expound more on this . As far as I know there is nothing like a USA national license, only the states issue Liscence . And all state Liscence allow you to drive in other US states for certain period of time . I’ve driven in every state I visited with my IN Liscence and I didn’t at anytime opted for a national Liscence as you posited .

Is it bad for the NPA to have an office in London? The biggest city in the world? What if that’s a way of generating revenue for the NPA to become self reliant at the London office?
How will any sane president not want his country to have an efficient ports office in one of the biggest cities in the world.
Now I agree with Tinubu, Obi is just a warehouse economist and trader who couldn’t transform Anambra but wants to transform Nigeria. Bala bulu economics

It’s the arrogance of your ignorance for me. London isn’t even among the 20 largest cities.

fairheart:

1.You didn't do your home work well. And trust me, I have seen cases where overconfidence kill the chances of approval.
First, you disgusted the VO with saying it is a prestigious school. No need for that. I always tell my students, don't give unnecessary information. In fact, it is useless to start bragging about a school. It doesn't had any chance to getting approved.

2, Can you take a look at other schools you applied to? The right school on that chart would be other tier 2 schools, top ranking universities.

3, You were going for a school with a cost of attendance of $60K. I always say it here, always consider the reality of things when selecting a school. Unfortunately, you overlooked that reality. Your school is way too expensive, especially because it is a blank admission without scholarship or assistantship. More so, we are in a pandemic, with people source of income significantly affected and unable to make as much as they were making before the pandemic. What happened to other schools that are well-ranked but not as much as expensive? $60K a year, in my opinion and based on reality, is too much. If you had asked on this thread whether or not you should use this admission, I would have advised you against it.

4, Did you say you Mum makes 3.6 Million every month? Okay, let us be realistic. 3.6 X 12 (in a year) is 43M, less that your total cost of attendance for 9 months, one academic year! So, even if your Mum pumps in her anual income, it still can't pay your COA. She has responsibilities, other family members, etc. Come on. Someone that can confidently pay $60k in nine month to fund her daughter should make more than 3.6, except she has been saving over the years for you. I am sharing this because this is the angle the VO that interviewed you looked at things from. Otherwise, he wouldn't have asked who does live with (wanted to know other family members your Mum support from that 3.6million). When the VO asked who your Mum lives with, you left out mentioning your Dad, giving impression she may be seperated or divorce.

5, You live alone but with your fiance, meaning there's a plan to get married soon.

I know your interview was less than 5 minutes or so, but you see those questions you were asked and the way you answered says a lot about your credibility for the F-1 Visa. He sense lies.

I see in your other post that you are disgruntled by the way the VO handled your interview. It is not the VO's fault; you caused it and you should take responsibility and go back to your drawing board and repackage yourself. You caused the instability and nervousness with your overconfidence with saying you're going to a top school, and the VO responded accordingly. The VO was not discriminatory at all; you gave him the sense of unbelief by your answers. You showed indirectly that your sponsor can't afford the school you are going, and on that ground, he refused you. He did what he was trained to do.

MY ADVISE FOR YOU
1. Do not reapply except you have funding or scholarship that reduces your cost of attendance. I am sure a remark must have been left on your profile.
2. Prepare to prove your credibility. If in your next interview question arise on your fiance, make sure you let the VO knows that you wanted to get this master's before you settle down and marry him, as you would not want to live apart doing your MS in the U.S once you get married.
3. Consider applying to other school that promises funding. In your other post, you said Stevenson graduate students get jobs upon graduation. That is correct, but so is the case for other school. Students who graduated in 400 nationally ranked universities also get jobs, especially since IT skills are in high demand. So, I advise you correct your belief. It doesn't have to be that school for you to get a good job. I have seen students from colleges in Florida get high paying internship with Microsoft, Google, and all.
4. In life, overconfidence can cheat us of what we want. Find balance in how you see things. I can sense you irritated the VO from the way the interview started. But that happens. I advise you find a balance in your next interview. Confidence can be negative if not checked. Find balance.
5. It is not the end. Strategize and go back.

All the best!

Wish I could love this thousand more times .

Precisely on Monday and Tuesday this week, Oba Adeyemi, accompanied by some of his wives (Ayabas), children, aides and well wishers was at the Durbar Stadium ,Oyo, for physical fitness exercises as usual.

He has neither fallen sick nor rushed to the hospital for any serious ailment, hence he and his family remain agile and active .

But I have an I20 with a partial funding for this fall. If the school doesn't allow for resumption date extension, can I still present this I20 atleast to secure the visa?

Also, my sponsor generate a debit only statement of account for me (for reasons best know to them) is this tenable at the embassy and can I present a June statement for Aug interview?
Thanks for your response in anticipation.

It’s best you contact your school for extension letter , many schools offer this due to pandemic and other delays in admission process , as for the bank statement , we have had cases where VO asked visa applicants to resubmit an updated or recent bank account , you do not have time at your side , hence Vo may not extend such opportunity . Verdict ,
: Get everything in order as much as you can to avoid story .

My Transcript

Visa approved at Lagos Embassy, 30th July 2019

School: Clarkson University

Funding: 66,000$ (Tuition and stipends)

Course : Msc Chemical Engineering

This was my 9th attempt, 7 in Lagos, 2 in Abuja

Here is my today's visa transcript:

V.O: (Looked at my i20) I see you have a teaching assistantship, what will you be teaching?

Me: I will be assisting prof. ... in grading students papers, invigilating test and exams, other teaching duties will be assigned upon resumption

V.O: what was your undergraduate Major?

Me: chemical engineering

V:O Where do you work and what's your duties?

I currently work as a process engineer at D***y Industries Limited and stated my duties

V.O: (Started typing for a long time and checking his system, he was shaking his head too and my mind was beating fast.) He asked, have you travelled outside the country before?

Me: Yes, I have been to Ghana

V.O: is it by flight or road and how many times

Me: I travelled by road and that was sept last year and came back same month

V.O: (Went to meet another V.O, he stayed there for like 4mins, I don't know what they were discussing). After he came back, he asked... What's your plans after graduation?

Me: Upon completion of my masters degree, I will be resuming a new position at my current place of work as a senior process engineer and I am going to be on a paid study leave (I brought out the letter, he saw it and said he doesn't need it, I pushed my letter back to my file).

V.O: (Typing for a very long time and checking stuffs on his system) you have been to Abuja embassy last time, what transpired there?

Me: During my last interview, the V.O wasn't convinced that I am a credible student and hence I was refused. I have come to demonstrate my credibility as a student, I wrote GRE and scored 324, had a good grade (1st class) and believe i definitely do very well during my masters studies at Clarkson University. (He nodded)

V.O: (Started typing again and checking stuffs on his system), You applied for safety science at Embryl Riddle Aeronautical University in 2017, why the switch to chemical engineering (For my mind, e don come again o)

Me: That's was when I finished my National Youth Service and was working with a firm so i needed to increase my safety knowledge but since I changed place of work and now dealing with chemicals, I needed to develop knowledge in the area of chemical catalysis and plasma processing which will be needed when I resume a new position at my place of work. (He nodded)

V.O: Do you have anybody in USA?

Me: No, I don't have anybody

V.O: (Typed for ages, for like 2mins and was checking his system, my mind was beating fast. He took my passport and those blue papers, I was like it's finished, another refusal. Immediately he brought out the white paper and circled a location, then said the golden words) YOUR VISA HAS BEEN APPROVED, then passed my i20 and sevis receipt

Me: collected my i20 and shouted Thank you sir!!! I ran out of the embassy and people were shouting what is it, I was running till i reached where I entered cab to my house cos it was like a dream or like i was watching a movie.

That's it... I saw God's favour today

Dear Time2win, you have finally won , yours is a "no going back " type of resilience , Achievement resembles climbing a slope, it is hard and loaded with disappointments, But at last… everything is commendable!! I am happy you came to at the highest point of the slope! Congrats on this achievement of yours. Hoping you witness many more accomplishments like this. Start packing , see you in Trump land

Visa approved !! @ the 6th attempt

My Nairaland experience has been quite an eventful one because I was blessed, for no significant effort of mine, to meet certain people. It actually sounds a bit weird, to say that people I've never met in real life (except here) have made more impact in my adult life than some I know in real life. There are certain things I crave, and few people there are who have it and graciously give. The list is a bit long, but I'll mention just two of them here. It is important to particularly mention these two, because it is the thought of them that makes me feel I might be missing (and losing) somethings if I get too busy to check this thread These two and few others inspire me more than anyone else here, and that is not to say that I do not appreciate the input of others . I certainly do not agree with everything these three people write about, but none of them has ever failed in that peculiar area in which they inspire me. These are people who have a healthy and profound thought pattern. They all know what they want to say, and they know how to say it. Almost always, I'm awed by the advices and transcripts vets

Sharwama; I had my first mock interview with this Queen , I did terribly bad in the mock but not without lessons and counseling at the end, both of which influence my approval in huge measure.
Sharwama thinks too deeply, and lets her fingers take the depth of her mind deeper when she writes. You think you understand what she wrote, but you'll understand her better if you read again, slowly. She makes you laugh, while savouring some hard truths. She is the greatest, in my opinion, when it comes to satire. Sharwama will make you take pain with a smile on your face. How she thrusts a dagger through a person's chest with her words without failing to give onlookers a viewing pleasure, is a lesson I'm still struggling to grasp. Dear queen , may the force always be with you

Fairheart ;
Oga took it from where the queen stopped , mock every 2days , correction upon corrections . @fairheart, Sincerely, English language obscures the awesomeness of some people, the best words only make a mockery of their virtues. This is why it is difficult to write words to properly convey the true feelings of gratitude in my heart for the blessing you have been to me

Suffice it to say that I holds nothing but reverence for you and all that you represent

Thank you for being such a huge blessing. Your love for God is enviable. For all the sunshine and laughter you bring, God bless you.

To you duo, May your kindness always be rewarded in thousands of folds. May your selflessness always return blessings to you in larger measures.

Lagosismyhome, time2win, Pedestals, This is a toast to all of you and others who give freely the richness of your minds. Every intelligent commentary is a product of mental work, including deep thinking, experience and past voracious reading. I learn daily from you all and I'm grateful. You may not understand how scarce and costly a robust thread like this is , until you visit some threads. Visit some threads and read your fellow youth--Nigerians, graduates. Read those threads and encounter the boldness of ignorance and its democratic spread among a large swathe of the youth space. You may return realising you're not entirely useless and foolish as you thought. You may realise that, by attracting brilliant associations, you may yet have substance in that big head of yours. A toast to my people here, young and old, rich and poor, foolish and wise--for in the end really, each group helps the other to find balance. And because we all switch from one group to the other at different times, the joke is on all of us!

Ok stop. You barely presented a case at all and still got your visa, so no it doesn’t simply depend on how you present your case or “god”. This is why folks here waste their time rehearsing transcripts they won’t need.

It simply depends on whether the VO was convinced that you are a bonafide student and you have the funding to cover your costs without resorting to public funds. Getting a full scholarship and a research fellowship to cover your full costs was the biggest factor in your case. I would refrain from pontificating on the flaws in others at the consulate simply because you’ve now got your visa.

We should always put God first, even for mundane things like eating, not just when we need a visa.

It is glaringly self evident that organised atheism will bring more harm to mankind than organised religion. The more dangerous one is clad in garment of religion moderation. There's hardly an atheist that were s/he a believer wouldn't be dangerously fundamentalist. Always angry, always seeking out believers to curse out and attack unjustifiably, the hallmarks of the typical fanatic. Whatever is built on such vile never brings any good. And again, organised religion may have instigated some harm, but it is also true that every healthy human mind craves a tether beyond the mundane. For many, it is this quest to hinge the mind on something beyond self that constitutes their entire faith, what satisfies this in the absence of organised faith? Where in the whole of creation has a vacuum proven purposefully sustainable? It is OK to underscores the role ,influence /impact of a supreme being or even reject the his existence , but it is downright silly to insist that those who bow in unobtrusive worship, either through individualized subscription or via organised faith must quit because you somehow, by your superior brilliance know they bow to air.

I'm not arguing with "god", simply disabusing the false notion here that getting a visa is a sign of "god" being on your side. Genesis 39:2 is instructive... most of you are simply christians of convenience.

Dear Twood, again, If someone tells you that their success comes as a result of God's grace, the least you can do is respect that. If you do know from whence their success came, then why bother to argue it?

You're welcome to believe that your success is entirely about you and your efforts; that's fine. But do not belittle and throw snide remarks at the next guy's success story just because it does not sit well with your narrative.

So perhaps you say there is no God , you must at least recognise that whatever elements control the world must have moved in your favour to seal that big achievement. Let's start with the talent with which you were born. What efforts did u make to secure that talent for yourself Oh, good genes, right? Just how much maths did you do to decide whose genes you'd inherit in the birthing process? You must recognise that something outside of your control did bestow you with that talent.

Now looking at spheres within our control, I want to believe that life must at least have taught you that the best prepared, the most hardworking, and even the most talented, do not always come out number one. Life is not that simple.

If someone decides to recognise the role of the elements in their success in what ever form, it is not foolishness in anyway; some may even call it self-awareness!!!
