PoliticsRe: Who Named These Streets In Lagos? by oyatz(m): 5:27pm On Jun 13, 2020
Thanks Cosby my rich friend,

The naming and/re-naming of these streets were influenced by the Ago-Egba History, the roles of the colonial masters, the early Christian Missionaries and their interractions with the 'Railway peoples' and Railway Stations they passed through on their ways from the North to Lagos.

The Eastern Railways from Igboland terminated in Port-Harcourt where the British Colonial Masters were evacuating Nigerian resources (especially Coal) to Britain.

Perhaps if the Eastern Railways had passed through Ebute-Metta, they might had known about Aba, Enugu or Mbaise early enough and name some of their streets after these cities.

Cosbyrich:
I am so very grateful for this.I was born in Agbole Mogaji in Lagos Island. My father built a house at Olodeokuta street, surulere.I have transversed the whole of Surulere,Yaba,Ebutte Meta,Stadium,Ladipo(Mushin),Idi or,Moshalashi,Alakara etc. These are very vast areas. All these places are majorly dominated by the Yorubas just for Aguda where we have a lot if Igbos and Idi Arabs where we have a lot of Hausas.Coming g to Ebutte Meta cum Yaba up to Unilag, very vast areas,I have seen some Hausa states names but I just wonder why we do not have Igbo states names, mind you,all of these places are dominated more than 90% by the Yorubas. As much as I believe your history because of the owners of houses and properties here, why do you think no street or road was name after any SE states in these vicinity, thanks?
It is all for knowledge which I can pass to my friends.
PoliticsRe: Who Named These Streets In Lagos? by oyatz(m): 5:10pm On Jun 13, 2020
6) After the Amalgamation of 1914 and the construction of Railways, Ebute-Metta became a great destination for many people coming from the hinterland to Lagos, many of whom couldn't get accommodation on the Island (reserved for only the Europeans and Upper class Nigerians).

7) The Ago-Egba peoples in Ebute constructed the Lisabi Hall which was commissioned in 1938, by which time their 3rd generation descendants have become the Engineers, Technicians and Civil Servants of the Nigerian Railways with Stations and offices near them.

cool By this time, Trains coming from the North bringing Cotton, Groundnuts, Beans, Hides &Skin, Local rice and of course people where very common in Ebute-Metta.
Interaction between the people of Ebute-Metta and these 'Railway peoples' became more cordial and intensed.

9) Some of the Streets were named after certain towns where the Trains stop for rest/evacuations of cargoes (Railway Stations) ,thus we have Kano, Jebba and Borno way.

Ondo, Ibadan, Abeokuta and Lagos Streets were named after the towns where some of the early residents originated form.

Willoughby, Glover and McCulmn streets were named after Colonial & Missionary masters which have not been changed.
PoliticsRe: Who Named These Streets In Lagos? by oyatz(m): 4:52pm On Jun 13, 2020
4) These Egba Christians (some of whom were returnees from the infamous Trans-Atlantic slavery) formed a community which they called 'Ago Egba',Ebute-Metta.

They built their Church, St Jude's Church with schools to educate their children and they divided the land into streets which were originally named after their European Missionaries & Colonial officers and some of the Egba chiefs like Daddy Osholake.

Thus we had
Dento Street (renamed Murtalar Muhammad Way),
Griffith Street (renamed Borno way),
Freeman Street
King George V street (Renamed Herbert Macaulay street)
Cementary Street
Bola Street
Osholake Street
Tapa Street
Ok Baba Street

5) These Ebute-Metta peopple formed the first set of civil servants in Nigeria.
PoliticsRe: Who Named These Streets In Lagos? by oyatz(m): 4:42pm On Jun 13, 2020
Thank you Cosby the Rich, you have raised a very important question which has some historical backgrounds

As someone who grew-up in Ebute-Metta and studied the History of the areas, these are my explanations;

1) Ebute-Metta was part of the Awori Kingdom of Otto with the Capital at Otto just before Iddo on the way to Lagos Island.

Ebute-Metta is a Yoruba meaning 'The three Harbours' i.e Iddo, Otto and Oyingbo.

In the olden days, the king, Oba Oloto of Otto controlled these harbour and had his agents collecting taxes from ships bringing goods to Lagos using those harbours.

2) Around 1850s, there was a great tension between the Christian community and adherents of Traditional Religion in Abeokuta which was on the verge of snowballing into a sectranian crisis.

On the eve of departure of some European Missionaries from Abeokuta, the native christian converts fearing that the dominant Traditionalists will descend on them in the absence of their European proctectors begged the Europeans to take them along to Lagos.

3) On getting to Lagos, the European Missionaries went to the King of Lagos to allocate land for the Egba Christians from Abeokuta but the king said Lagos was already being filled up and he couldn't afford to give the little available land to the Egba people. Instead he suggested that the Colonial Governor, John Glover contact his brother Oba (The Oloto) on the other side of Lagos, just across the Lagoon.

4) Gov Glover approached the Oloto, who agreed to give the Egbas a large tract of land from Oyingbo (Coaste Street) to Somewhere just before the lands of Yaba begins (Glover Street where LSDPC Estate was later built about 130years later).

Cosbyrich:
In Ebutte Meta cum Yaba here,we have Ibadan,Abeokuta etc streets but my surprise is how the Northern names came to be without the Eastern names.Mind you, both of them are very scanty in these areas....as residents....except for commercial visits.

Election is a test of popularity.

Gov Obaseki should try his popularity on a neutral platform.

The idea that Oshiomole's candidate should NOT win is not democratic also.

A candidate whose only unique point is that 'he is opposed to Oshiomole' is also a bad choice.

Let the BEST candidate win, it doesn't matter if the candidate is that of PDP, SDP, APC or Labour party.

These bandits may be heartless but they are not fools, they know the consequences of attacking Lagos, populated by many people of different ethnic groups who will not be sympathetic to their cause.

The real reason why Boko Haram or Armed Bandits can NOT make Lagos, Port Harcourt or Enugu their operational bases is because the people in these localities will NOT be sympathetic to their causes.

Boko Haram and Armed Bandits fester and thrive in the North because some Northerners are either harbouring them or believe in whatever they are fighting for.

If they try their non-sense in foreign environment, they will be easily neutralized.

1) Eritrea was an existing 'country' before being formally annexed by Ethiopia in 1962 leading to a 30 year civil war with Ethiopia. The referendum was a Politically agreed solution following series of negotions to end the armed insurection.

2) There was no Kingdom/Empire or Country known as Biafra before 1914.

If you believe the IPOB naked lie that Biafra had existed before Nigeria, then State the Capital and past Presidents/Kings or Emperors of Biafra, their currency, boundaries and treaties signed with British, Franch or German Colonial agents or other Nations.

5) There's nothing sacrosanct about Nigerian unity.
Unity just like love can NOT be enforced. If the people of Nigeria don't want to leave together, their LEADERS will come together to separate the country.

Bros ,if you are one of the people that still truly believe that any Biafran referendum will hold, it's better you know the truth;

Nobody is conducting any referendum!

Neither the president, the National Assembly or the Judiciary has the power to conduct any referendum.
The Nigerian people have to sit down and insert a seccession clause by a way of referendum in the Constitution as suggested by Awolowo in the constitutional conferences in the 1950s.

There's nothing like Yaribansa in Hausa language, let alone meaning 'deceitful'

Your made in Onitsha, assembled in Aba propaganda is dead on arrival!

The first written record of the word 'Yoruba' was from a 15th century book written by the Shongahi Muslim, Baba Ahmed possibly derived from 'Oyo-Oba' meaning the Oyo King, which later encompassed the people the king led.

akdjr:
He has a point, but like the popular saying that Charity begins at home. I urge FFK whom I adore his knowledge as an historian to also tell his ethnic group to change their name from being addressed as "Yoruba". Have you always thought about where the word Yoruba originate? Have you heard many misconception and misapprehension that left you baffled? But his call for change of Port Harcourt made me want to make this clear to him.

What is the meaning of Yoruba? Does it have any inclination to their language? This is a thought provoking topic that needs profound reasoning and intense research for better understanding.

Hausa-Fulani who had been in contact with the FFK ethnic group even before the rise of Oyo Empire had for some reasons chosen to call them Yoruba, or Yaribansa (bastard and deceitful )
which later metamorphose to the name "Yoruba"

The Igbos had cleansed themselves off ‘Yinmiri’, a name the Hausa-Fulani had technically given to them. The igbos have today refuted Yinmiri to be a derogatory word, however, the reverse is the case for the Yoruba.

You can as well check the meaning from Yoruba dictionary or articles written by some Yoruba professors.
PoliticsRe: FFK: Rivers, Change Port Harcourt Name, Here Is Why by oyatz(m): 1:01pm On Jun 11, 2020
All over the word, people from different tribes bear the same names at times. It just shows both tribes are related. E.g

Henri (French)= Henry (English)

Frank(French)= Frank (English)

Louis(French)= Louis (English)

Nicholas (French)= Nicholas (English)= Nicholas(Russian).

It may may be difficult to say one is a subset of the other if the subset disagree. You can NOT know a people more than themselves.

There was no city known as Igweocha in 1914 when Port Harcourt was established.

If there is any written record where Igweocha was ever written down before 1920, please post it here for all to see.

Igbo people who were migrating to the city started calling it Igweocha in the late 1920s-1930s.

The NCNC Government of Eastern Region once toyed with the idea of renaming the city from Port-Harcourt to Port Azikiwe in the 1950s.

Most Nigerians are very funny and don't don't seems to understand Basis Human and People's Rights.

ALL peoples have the right to bear their own names and name their towns/villages the ways they like.
These don't have to fit into preferred expectations of their neighbours or other people.

E.g Ilah(Arabic)= Ellah(Hebrew)

Bin(Arabic)= Ben( Hebrew)= son

Miriam= Mariam= Mary= Maryam

Jean-Baptiste= John the Baptist

Williams= William= Wilhem

Oliseh= Olisa=Orisa= Orisha= Deity/God

Oritsefemi= Orisafemi

Iye mi(Bini) = Iya mi (Yoruba)= My mother

Oma ukuche (Igala)= Omo ikose(Yoruba)= Apprentice.

Okwute(Igbo)= Okwuta(Igala)= Okuta (Yoruba)

Rumu(Ikwerre)= Umu(Igbo)= Oma(Igala)=Omo(Bini)=Omo(Yoruba).

#Moral of the lesson: No language is superior to another and most of these similar languages evolved from a common ancestor.

Excuse me bros,

How did Hausa-Fulani force you to be dependent on their food and Agricultural produce?

In my own personal opinion, as we live together over the years, our economies became more interwoven and interdependent. For instance,

The Urhobos, Binis,Igbos, Yorubas produce palm oil and Palm kernels.

The animal feeds companies (dominated by the Yoruba people) use the Palm kernels as one of the the raw materials to produce chicken and Fish feeds.

The Igbo pepper soup Madams in Lagos buy these cat fishes from the Yoruba cat fish farmers while the foods restaurants buy the chicken.

The Hausas supply the suya and vegetable oil at such relaxation joints and also produce parts of the Maize used to brew the beer being served at such relaxation joints.

This is just one chain of the microscopic aspect of the economic activities in Nigeria...we are now more interdependent.

OreMI22:
One of the most dangerous things threatening Igbos today is the dependence on Hausa/Fulani for any type of food or meat.

Hausa/Fulani plotted this scenario to force us into mere consumers of their agricultural products without farming our own lands and raising our own livestock as we did in the past. .....and we bought it!

It's true, if you are focused you will get to the top, even if you are starting from menial jobs.

I also know so many people who are employers of Labour today but started as petty traders in 1985-1990.

Even Dangote started from petty trading close to his Uncle's Warehouse in Kano.

However, not all petty traders are Igbos.
There are millions of Nigerians from different tribes without inherited wealth who started small and became bigger in their trades.

1) Reno Omakri never said Igbos dominate the economy of Nigieria but said Igbo dominate the commercial sector in Nigeria which is even wrong and misleading.

2) Different people from different tribes dominate different aspects of the commercial sector.

Thanks.

horsepower102:
Reno omokiri said that Igbos dominates the economy but forgot to dominate the media.

This is 100% accurate analysis. No truer words have been said. And because of this great mistake, Igbos are paying heavily for the consequences of having others tell your story. Especially those who are our sworn enemies.

The hours upon hours the likes of pazienza and have to spend online trying to debunk decades of lies and propaganda against igbos could have been avoided if we were able to tell our own stories through our own media.

The internet is the great equalizer but it’s just the beginning. We need to establish our own media houses or we will continue to let our enemies tell our stories for us.

Overall I am glad that this generation of igbos have woken up to the great damage this has done. But we need to do more to fix this nonsense.

Look at what NBS did with the recent statistics. If we had a credible media house with strong investigative journalism, we could have easily debunked it on National television.

We igbos will continue to suffer if we don’t fix this annoying post civil war legacy.

The same thing happened in my hometown in Osun State.

In the 1980s, separate smaller church services were usually conducted for Urhobo speakers.

Igbos and Igedes (Idoma) are apear to be replacing the Urhobo and Igbira of old.

Most Urhobos in my hometown don't even speak Urhobos language or wear Urbobos dressess anymore, they are gradually being Yorubanized no thanks for the widespread fornication of young people.

In the 1980s, young people did courtship and proper marriages involving families. Getting pregnant without marriage was a thing to be ashamed of.

Now, people just get pregnant for whosever they like and moved in to start living as husbands and wives. As a result of this, in my town now, the dividing lines between Yoruba, Urbobos, Igbira, Igbos and Igedes is appearing blurred.

Only Northerners live in isolated areas and they don't mingle with other people.

It's so surprising that their population reduced drastically. In Ekiti and many parts of Ondo State then, we used to have several Urhobo communities just like Ebiras; the two were the next main groups after Yorubas everywhere you went; farms, classrooms, churches, social gatherings, etc. Now Igbos have taken Urhobo's spot.
