The negotiations failed already with the Ukrainian President insisting that he does not like the Minsk agreement, and therefore wouldn’t honor or implement it. This was an agreement drawn up when he was still a comedian, and signed by international partners to stop the war between Ukraine and the breakaway regions. It actually looked like the US instigated the Ukrainian President to reject the Minsk agreement else, how can a president just wake up and say he didn’t like an agreement drawn up and signed by international stakeholders, and still get the support of US for going against international arbitration. This meant that as long as you have US and NATO backing, any nation can do and undo without being held accountable. Russia has been the only nation, with China sometimes, that go against such double standards. Even then, the US still vetos and gets its way without much pushback, but will not allow other permanent members of the UN Security Council (Russia, China, not that these ones are even kind or holy) to control their own spheres of influence.

In all this, Russia was painted as the evil aggressor by the media controlled by the west, while the Ukrainian military continued shelling the breakaway regions, and had even planned to wipe out the separatists, hence the move by Russia to surround Ukraine with troops to discourage that.

Putin seemed to have moved forward with the recognition of the breakaway regions after realizing that the talks were not going anywhere as the stakeholders were not interested in implementation of the Minsk agreement. This in a way puts Ukraine on the back foot to prefer the Minsk agreement that they initially rejected over the current development.

The initial winner here is the US who has refused to sanction Russian oil and gas exports to the US because it will affect the US economy.

But on the other hand has forced Germany to jettison its own energy plans with the Nordstream 2 pipeline. Europe has once again been hoodwinked into self destruction while the US reaps the benefits of the crisis once again.

Concerning the sanctions, Europe is more concerned about the situation in Russia and Ukraine than the USA, so it is understandable if they are taking much of the burden of the sanctions.

What a shaky response by this man, he should have repeated his earlier statement to continue the negotiation with their Western partners, then if all fails, they would recognize the independence.

I don't know why people keep praising this Putin for what he did. I notice most of these praises are coming from Africa, especially Nigerians who are used to despotic regime. Someone invaded another sovereign country and they called him genius, as if USA cannot invade other countries if they wanted to.

Putin is pulling the world back to the dangerous nostalgia of the old ages where race, ethnic, culture, and religion commonalities determine the bases on which people of different countries relate with each other. This is very dangerous in the sense that this could lead to bigger countries trying to oppress and destroy the smaller and less powerful ones. It is very funny that Africans who would be the major victims of the new world order Putin is trying to create are the ones praising him. Is there any country in Africa today that can match the world superpowers in military strength?

As part of the convention which created the United Nations after the WW2, it was stipulated that by allowing people of different backgrounds in terms of race, religion, ethnic and culture to live side-by-side is the only way to prevent another war and bring about human integration that will spur our civilization to the next level. But the likes of Putin and right-wing politicians in USA and Europe are trying to destroy that co-existence among races which had helped to prevent another war since the 1940s.

Nigerians and Africans should think deep before siding with any cause in the global politics today, because there is a serious power tussle going on. And it will be a miracle if we don't have another world war in the next decade.

Leadership sometimes isn't about age. An older man is more likely to be wiser, experienced, patient, emotionally mature and less spontaneous in reaction while a younger leader brings fresh ideas, possibly innovative thinking, modern trends, boundless energy, and quick wit.
You'll agree with me that employing a first class student as a manager of a multinational company could spell doom. Though, the young manager may bring fresh innovative ideas, the gap of experience, man management and emotional maturity could cause knee-Jack decisions which can impend whatever growth recorded. Nigeria as a multi-ethnic entity is far more complex to manage because any action taken can cause serious implication in any part of the country. A younger president who is less emotionally mature will more likely have killed a state offender which could lead to serious revolt and thus another round of bloodletting and bad blood between ethnic groups.

If I am to cast my vote for a youth, he/she must've displayed high level of tolerance, emotional maturity, must be looking to build a good legacy, and be ready to listen to wise counsel from elders with experience and most likely wisdom.

You are still cast in that dark shadow of age-old tradition that believes only by age can one gain an experience to lead? Forget it, the world is fast changing, even the experience of yesterday might not be that useful today. We are now in the era of digital information. If you tell people lie, they will know that you are lying, same thing if you tell them the truth, they know, even though it might not be immediate.

Do you think that all decisions taken by presidency came from Buhari alone? What are those special advisers, ministers and other arms of government doing? Today, you can learn a lot just by using your tablet and smartphone to guage people's reactions to issues. The world of leadership today is by who can learn quickly rather than those with experience.

Knowledge can be expended with bridging any gap of experience in my view. What experience are we even talking about in Nigerian government today Is it the experience of stealing money or playing partisan politics? We don't even have any templates that we follow as a country rather than those that will serve the interests of some individuals. Nigerian youths are far better placed to change this status quo due to their willingness to learn new things and adapt the changes to their lifestyles, which portend great potentials for our country.
