PoliticsRe: Lagos State Government Close Mile 2 To Tincan Island Ports For 2days For Repairs by panpan(m): 10:26am On Jun 17, 2019
The headline of this thread should be corrected.

There is a difference between 'closure of road' and 'closure of ports'.
PoliticsRe: John Yakubu Yusuf: EFCC Probes Why Convicted Pension Thief Is Not In Jail by panpan(m):
If in 2013, Mr Yusuf was given an option of fine, it is possible that he may have been out of the country by the time the Court of Appeal sentenced him (in 2018).

The Court of Appeal sentenced him to two years imprisonment on three counts, which are to run concurrently, so it is only two years he is expected to stay in prison, and not six years.

It is the duty of the prosecuting agency (EFCC), to find and arrest the convict; it is not the duty of journalists or the Nigerian Prisons Service.
Car TalkRe: Bentley Reveals 207-mph 2020 Flying Spur,The World's Fastest Production Sedan by panpan(m): 2:52pm On Jun 14, 2019
The Bentley vehicle looks great. However, what is the purpose of a car having a top speed of 207 miles per hour (333 km per hour), when most countries impose speed limits of 87 miles per hour (140 km per hour) or less?
CrimeRe: EFCC To Go After Those Using POS Machines Illegally by panpan(m): 7:51am On Jun 14, 2019
Pavore9:
Fraud committed with POS machines is unimaginable. Chinese are senior men when it come to that. They steal or clone credits of big companies in China or Hong Kong , one of them flies to Kenya with the cards forming tourist they approach Kenyan businesses that accepts cards for payment and "collaborate" with them under the disguise they are paying for goods and services running into thousands of dollars. The kenyan business person withdraws the money that has hit the business bank account gives the Chinese about 70% of the money the rest is for "his/her stress" cheesy cheesy cheesy
If this report is true, then it is not a surprise that EFCC has decided to focus on POS machines, because EFCC serves foreign interests.

PoliticsRe: Why We Are Celebrating Democracy Day On June 12 – Osinbajo by panpan(m): 5:25am On Jun 12, 2019
Celebrating democracy with a public holiday is not necessary, whichever day it is.
PoliticsRe: Just In: FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday by panpan(m): 1:16pm On Jun 10, 2019
A national democracy day is not necessary.

It's okay for democracy to be practiced. Democracy does not need to be celebrated with a public holiday.
SportsRe: Ahmad Ahmad Accused Of Sexual Harassment by panpan(m): 7:14pm On Jun 09, 2019
MhizMuna:
A public relation consultant from Mali, Mariam Diakite, told The New York Times that she was fired by Ahmad for rejecting his advances.
If she was fired for rejecting his advances, why didn't she complain at that time?

MhizMuna:
She stated that Ahmad informed her he was terminating her appointment because he had informed officials that they were in a romantic relationship, and that it would be a conflict of interest if she carried on working.
If she did not raise any objection to Ahmad informing officials of their romantic relationship at that time, then perhaps they were actually in a romantic relationship.

If such a relationship is against service rules of The Confederation of African Football (CAF), then it is in order for one of them (usually the junior staff member) to be relieved of their employment.
BusinessRe: 5 Ways To Identify Fake Currency Notes by panpan(m):
standardgroup:
2. Checking the texture of the note

5. Check the ribbon/thread
Usually, we would not bother with some of these methods. In our daily transactions, many of us simply take money from others and put it into our pockets, wallets or handbags.

The most practical method of detecting fake currency is to feel it, and in case it doesn't feel right, check the ribbon/thread.

PoliticsRe: EFCC Amendment Bill: Rotimi Jacobs Warns Buhari: Don't Assent To Bill by panpan(m): 4:21pm On Jun 03, 2019
Rotentina:
"It means that you have deprived EFCC of their responsibility and power to trace, forfeit, confiscate and manage assets procured with proceed of unlawful activities.

Another aspect of the bill makes it compulsory for the EFCC to obtain ex parte orders before seizing suspects’ assets.

The ex parte order clause will deny the EFCC the powers of invoking Interim Forfeiture Clause in its Act without recourse to the court.
EFCC should not be allowed to forfeit, confiscate or seize a suspect's assets without a court order.

The judiciary have their role to play. EFCC should not be both accuser and judge.

Rotentina:
After the amendment, it reads, “(a) A Chairman, who shall (i) be a retired or serving member of any government security or law enforcement agency not below the rank of Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police or an equivalent and possessing not less than 20 years cognate experience; (ii) a legal practitioner with at least 20 years post-call experience.”

On the qualifications to be considered in the appointment of the EFCC Secretary, paragraph “e” was added to Section 8(1), which reads, “A person who is qualified to practise as a legal practitioner in Nigeria and has been so qualified for not less than 10 years.”
The rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police or equivalent is okay.

A legal practitioner with at least 10 years post-call experience for chairman, and 5 years post-call experience for secretary is okay.
CrimeRe: NDLEA Arrests Drug Dealer In Anambra, Seizes N45m Tramadol In Kaduna by panpan(m): 7:58pm On May 31, 2019
I do not understand why NDLEA seized tramadol, when it is not an illegal drug.

Just because a drug is alleged to be abused by some people does not mean that the drug is not useful when taken appropriately.
PoliticsRe: Tinubu’s Misdirected Anger And Obasanjo’s Bravery by panpan(m):
TANTUMERGO007:
Olusegun Obasanjo is the first Nigerian leader to have had a natural tenure uninterrupted by coups, death or tragedy. ...

... General Abdulsalami Abubakar, hurriedly hashed over before the fate of his predecessors befell him.
From the writer's analysis, if Obasanjo is the first Nigerian leader to have had an uninterrupted tenure, then Abdulsalami Abubakar is the second.

To say that one had a 'natural tenure uninterrupted' and the other 'hurriedly hashed over' is biased reporting.

CrimeRe: Four Bag Jail Terms for Internet Fraud In Abeokuta (photos) by panpan(m): 11:05am On May 23, 2019
germanized:
EFCC is a stupid hypocritical organization.

See them jailing young people because of $200 but when I went to their office to report a landlady who tried to scam me of about 500k naira they said they only handle cases worth millions and advised me to contact the police.

They are specialists in jailing the youths who are not harming the country but they will never go after the politicians looting the country dry.
EFCC is arresting 'young people because of $200', not because the amount is big or small, but because they are serving United States interests.

The case you reported does not involve any foreigner, so EFCC is not concerned, unless as you stated, the case is worth millions. Even at that, they may still drag their feet.

However, if the report had been that there was an attempted scam on a foreigner for even half of the amount you reported (in foreign currency equivalent), EFCC would have been interested.

There is nothing wrong with being a "village woman" or "village man" (whatever that means).

Those of us who have not spent much time in the village probably have parents, grandparents or great grandparents who have lived a greater part of their lives in the village.

SportsRe: FIFA Bans Eight Players, Agent For Life Over Match-fixing by panpan(m): 12:42am On Apr 25, 2019
ebusnwaoma:
Kenyan defender George Owino Audi received a 10-year ban and a fine of 15,000 Swiss francs (13,165 euros).
What is the point of giving a ten-year ban and imposing a fine? If he refuses to pay, what more will FIFA do?

From a football player's perspective, there probably isn't much difference between a ten-year ban and a life ban.

Does the mother not want to take care of the babies?

The twins' surname is Ayade. Is that the father's name or were the children given the name of the state governor?

Does Afokang prison have a nursery? If not, may the mother be allowed to take care of the babies under house arrest?

In theory, any national of the bank's membership can be appointed.

However, in practice, the current and all the past World Bank presidents have been nationals of the United States.

Even though 'eiye' was mentioned in the report, a man was arrested because he was alleged to have been involved in 'violent episodes, drug trafficking and exploitation of prostitution'.

He was not arrested simply because he belonged to a particular group, as the headline suggests.
EducationRe: JSS 3 Exam Fees: Private Schools Parents Besiege Lagos Exam Board For Refund by panpan(m):
theoldpretender:
Junior WAEC helps schools sort out students into whether they would be 'science' arts' or commerce' students in Senior secondary school

Indirectly it determines which course one would read in university or polytechnic eventually.
It is not necessary to use Junior Secondary School (JSS) Certificate Examination to 'sort out' students. Each student should choose the subjects he/she is interested in at the senior level.

A student may not do well in a particular subject in JS3, but may show remarkable improvement the next academic year.

Examinations for JS3 should be internal.

The JSS Certificate Examination should be scrapped; the certificate is neither accepted for employment nor used for admission to tertiary institutions.
