As part of measures to curb the spread of coronavirus pandemic, the Federal Government has directed heads of Federal Institutions and principals of Unity Colleges nationwide to close down the institutions.

Also, the Special Adviser on Education to the Lagos State governor, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, has said the tertiary institutions in the state might be close over the scourge.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono told Daily Sun that the decision to close down the schools was to protect and safeguard the lives of students/pupils from the deadly scourge.

Already some state governments and the management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have closed down schools and the scheme to check the spread of the virus.

Echono said, ”We have directed all higher institutions to close this weekend. Unity Schools that have completed their exams are to close immediately. Others are to hurry and close latest on 26th March.”

The permanent secretary said the ministry will monitor development as total closure might be ordered at any moment.

Wahab said the state government is assessing the situation and that on Sunday, a decision will be taken whether to shut down Lagos State University, Ojo; Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu; Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Ijanikin; Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, Epe and other state-owned institutions.

This is the most probable cause - carbon monoxide poisoning from the generator's fumes. This is what may have caused the death of the woman and unconsciousness of the man at the same time.

Another possibility, though far-fetched, is double suicide or murder/suicide (by either partner).

Murder by a third party, except by poisoning, is unlikely since the story does not indicate that there was any sign of a forced entry or a struggle. Food poisoning or drug poisoning is unlikely to cause both of them to lose consciousness at the same time (unless they were both asleep); one of them would have raised alarm or called for help.

Compulsory use of the railways for transporting certain types of cargo may sound good, but how practical would the implementation be?

Has the federal government assessed the volume of such types of cargo that is transported along federal roads each day and night, and whether the railways can handle such volume daily unfailingly?

If use of the railways is to be enforced, it should not be done immediately, but after at least two years from a public announcement, to enable businesses to adjust.

I can personally attest to the fact that in each and every Departmental admission guideline clearly spells out three criteria’s and is religiously adhered to which includes: 1. Merrit list 45% of the total students admitted to the dept (Atleast 2 to 3 students with the highest score from each state). 2. Catchment area list 35% (like any other university in Nigeria ABU considers students from its selected States as it catchment area). & 3. Less Educationally developed states list 20% (in other to give candidates in some selected states that are not as educationally developed as the others a chance to be in ABU as they are at a disadvantage and cannot stand their colleagues from the opposite side) which makes 100% for each department and in doing this no state is left out.

From this statement, there is no merit in the admission process at all.
