eph12:
Tithing is just 10%. The people of old sold their properties to give to the apostles and we are here shouting freeze.

Churches don't run themselves. Diesel cost the church millions of naira monthly. In big churches, permanent staff run into 100s, they collect salaries. The same Redeem freeze love to criticize has thousands of clinics for pregnant and kids especially. They are cheaper than the average clinic on the street. Look at the redeem camp and canaanland and try to imagine their staff strength. Churches do humanitarian services that you don't know about or refuse to acknowledge because it is against what you want to believe about the church.
At the end of spending all the money to run the church, buy diesel for generator, pay pastors etc, is it humanitarian service that is the major priority of religion as whole?
I agree that churches are trying when it comes to humanitarian services to people. But will only humanitarian services from church members income fix the problems of the nation as a whole?
I don't think so.

Now, don't tell me it is the governments responsibility to fix the nations problems because good or bad government is the outcome of the mindset of the citizens.

The church have every opportunity to straightened the people's mindset and thinking through acurate interpretation of scriptures, but they end up interpreting scriptures according to how the people want it in order to get commendations.

At the long run people pay to churches and pastors for nothing.

Somewhere in the book of proverb says righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.

If all our church supporting and religioness do not translate to acurate teaching of scriptures which bring about improved intelligence of church members and intelligent nation who knows what they are doing, then, humanitian services will continue to remain in cycle of no solution.

For instance, if you carefully look at the post of pastor Sam Adeyemi posted by the Op, he says Heb 7:8 pointed out that Jesus received tithe on a spiritual level.
which is not true.
Now, how will he possibly build intelligence on people's mind with that kind of teaching?

Pastor Sam adeyemi is very intelligent man of God no doubt. But in a bid to please people he has deliberately shielded his intelligence in this one

No he's not the devil's agent as you presume!

Freeze however you look at him, may not be in the package of a clergy, but is actually a Prophet sent to correct this generation in this area.

I know you all hate him because he's at variance with your Pastors. It will do you a world of good to forget the messenger and check out his message studily.

I have been actively studying the Bible for the past 26 years and found his stance on tithing accurate. Leave your Pastors for a moment daughter, do your own studies for a bit and objectively too. You may just get stunned by the truth. It's for your own good.

That all the Pastors out there are supporting it doesn't make it right. The gate to hell is wide and broad, many go into it.

Freeze's situation is like that of Jeremiah and Christ. When they came speaking truths quite different from deceptions Pastors of the day whom the people believed were teaching, the people hated them.

Don't look at him as a radio man. Like, who is he? You could just be abusing a messenger of God. Calling him a devil's agent, as did the Pharisees to Jesus.

Think about it! Good luck Daughter!
The funny thing about Nigeria is, people who don't read bible for themselves are the ones supporting pastors.
80% population of Nigerian christians are like that.
It's a pity

Even Sam adeyemi is wrong too.
He quoted Hebrews 7:8 to say that tithe is received on a spiritual level by Christ, meanwhile when you look at scripture it says something different entirely.

Hebrews 7:8 And here men that die(refers to Melchizedek) receive tithes; but there he (melchizedek) receiveth them, of whom(refers to Abram) it is witnessed that he(God) liveth .

So, the human mind is always subjected to error.

I was listening to gospel jamz this morning on cool FM when a caller who made a statement, that Daddy GO specifically told pastors to make more members to their churches if they want their salaries to be increased. How true could this be?
The only indication to that is RCCG churches trying to get more members which i see as a common characteristics of other churches.

Just to further buttress your position, I find it somewhat ridiculous that someone would state tithing which is a Jewish custom to be mandatory to Christianity.

I wonder if soulpeppersoup ever bothered to ask if Hebrews was addressed to Jewish Christians or to Gentile believers... I also wonder if Paul wrote that letter with the mindset that it would be for those existing 2000 years later in Africa after he wrote that epistle...

It would be nice if soulpeppersoup can bring out further points on tithing from any of the letters Paul addressed to the Gentile church.
Of course he can't because tithing never applied to Gentile Christians nor is it obligatory on the Jewish Christians in the first place!

Cheers.
You are absolutely correct bro,
Most of these things we read in scriptures are what happened in the past, about 2000 years ago, some of which do not apply anymore this current day.
Even today Jews don't pay tithe anymore. They keep wondering, what are today christians doing especially in Africa?

Christianity Etc › Re: Beware Of The Leaven Of Daddy Freeze by paxonel(m):
soulpeppersoup:
Now read from verse one.

For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; 2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; 3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. 4 Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. 5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: 6 But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. 7 And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. 8 And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.

Heb 7:1-8 (KJV)

Melchisedec whom Abram paid tithe was Christ, he was not a levi nor was Abram his brethren. Verse 7 says he liveth as who christ. Tithe is only paid to christ through levi or pastors. Church members are brethren of Christ. For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.
Heb 2:11-12 (KJV)

Tithe started with Abram before the law. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
John 1:17 (KJV)

Why did Moses bring tithe into the law? The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever. Deut 29:29 (KJV)
All these verses you combined together, they do not correlate among themselves therefore you cannot see what Paul was trying to explain to the Jews like that in that scripture.

For instance, verse 3 of that scripture says
....having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but MADE LIKE unto the Son of God.

someone that is made like unto another person is just analogy between the two people involved, it does not mean the person is that person in question.
It does not mean that Melchizedek was Christ himself(if you have differentiated between simile and metaphor).
So, Melchizedek could not possibly be Christ himself but he perhaps was like Christ.
Yes it is true that God made a oath with Melchizedek before he gave the law to Moses and brought out a high priest which is Christ in the order of Melchizedek,

But saying that Abram paid tithe to Melchizedek in the order of Christ or he paid to Christ himself simply because Paul draw analogy which shows similarity between Jesus and Melchizedek, do not follow at all.

It is also true that there was tithing before the law was given to Moses but that doesn't prove that tithing itself is not a law.

I will say that the reason why Paul brought out this Melchizedek issue to the Jews in that Heb. 7 was simply to convince them that Christ(Represented by Melchizedek in that analogy and not Melchizedek himself) is a high priest with higher authority than Abraham just like Melchizedek who was a highpriest enough to collect tithe from Abram inspite that he(Melchizedek) and his descendants did not have the promise.
therefore the gentiles like Melchizedek who was also a gentile, whose descendants also did not had the promise unlike Abraham descendants, were also entitled to the promise.
That is what Paul was trying to explain.

That's why verse 6 and 7 put it
6 But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.
7 And without all contradiction the less(which represent gentiles because the gentiles were seen to be less by the Jews) is blessed of the better(the Jews).

Jesus even said the first shall be the last and the last first, remember that parable?

Also, he brought out the analogy to affirm Jesus as our high priest on his throne above.

because if you look at the summary of all what he was saying which extended to chapter 8.

Hebrews 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken(from chapter 6)this is the sum(summary): We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens

Now, you can see that all what Paul was doing was simply analogy which was geared to convince the Jews to accept Jesus as their high priest and also to accept the gentiles, and not in anyway trying to get people pay tithe .

Freeze is wrong about first fruit and tithe.

Tithe is not a law. Tithe existed before the law as was circumcision. Law came by Moses while tithe exited even before Abram became Abraham.

Hebrews 7:5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a COMMANDMENT to take tithes of the people according to the LAW, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:

I guess you people's confusion is that you think that tithes are paid to the pastor directly. Do you know that in most cases(some churches) the pastors dont have access to the funds but the presbytery or the board though he may be signatory to the account.

Please sincerely answer this questions. Who gave the law to Abraham when he paid tithe to Mechizedek? Also was there anything like jews at the time? If tithe is a jewish tradional law, why then do you give offerings or is it also part of the 10 commandments? is it not the pastors who collect both?
The Jews of today were decendants of the Israelites of those days.
OK,
Because i was wondering why collections in churches today should be called tithe and offerings rather than being called cheerful giving.
Obviously there are intentions behind these names tithe and offering which are geared to make the collections lawful and compulsory as possible, just like the way it was in the old testament among the Israelites.

Abraham did not pay tithe to Melchizedek because it was lawful for him to pay tithe to someone who do not belong to his tribe. He paid the tithe to him because he was a great king who recognizes God. he was not compelled or forced to pay. Heb. 7:1-4

But for the israelites, it was lawful and by force, for the Levites to collect tithe from their brethren.

Hebrews 7:5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, HAVE A COMMANDMENT to take tithes of the people ACCORDING TO THE LAW. that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:

It says the sons of Levi had a commandment back then in old testament times(that is past tense)
Commandment from who?
Certainly from God.
That means all the Jews heard God speaking as he gave the commandment.

Now, i want to ask
Who gave todays pastors commandment to be collecting tithe from today christians?
Did they hear God speaking saying they should collect tithe?
Or was it written anywhere in the new testament that God commanded church leaders or early apostles to collect tithe from believers?
If there was anything like that, under what law?
