What y'all need to understand is that the Jsus in the bible and Jesus of Christianity are totally different personalities. Jesus in the Bible was a Jew,Christianity adopted him and deified him for Christianity and made into a man for all, whereas that wasn't the case at all.

Jesus became Christian !
Excellent point. wink

Only because you don't know what Spirituality is.

The Bible is not a spiritual guide but a religious book, there's nothing like a spiritual guide other than your own Ori/Chi which manifests as your intelligence and ability to make rational thoughts among others. Spirituality isn't built on faith, religion is.
Get the difference
Simply brilliant.

Why would you call something you don't understand irrational? before now, it would have sounded logical to believe in a geocentric universe, if we were to base our thinking on just what we see, because to the layman the earth physically, does not seem to be carrying out active motion. does it really mean the earth is static? would it be wise to mock those that belief In a moving earth?
Again , wrong on many counts.

Firstly, it very presumptive and arrogant of you to say or imply that atheist don't understand religion. 99 to 100% of atheists on Nairaland were once religious, and deal with religious people all their lives. I am confident that I, and most Nairaland atheists know and understand more about religion, the psychology of religion, the history of most religions than you and perhaps the far majority of Nigerian Christians.
peacesamuel94:
The only reason Why that seem to be the case, is because they are in the minority, try and imagine Nigeria being populated with the kind of atheists you see here on nairaland, the situation will be far worse.
Wrong again.
An anonymous forum gives a voice to everyone, especially those who don't have a voice in a lunacy bin almost 100% filled with religious nuts of very shade.
To prove your hypocrisy here, just take a look at the front page of the religious section , and tell us how many atheist threads you count compared to the number of Christian threads.
I mean, 100,000 pastors (my estimate) mount to pulpits, the airwaves, street banners, on buses, on the road every single day in Nigeria berating non-believers, those that don't buy their Middle East stone- age bullshytes. We hardly complain publicly because we are outnumbered 1 million to 1.
We find our voices online to rebut the bullshytes that you poison our society with.
And here you are, sulking, crying victim. undecided
That's is called hypocrisy.
peacesamuel94:
..and lastly Christians do not force their doctrines down anyone's throat, you are always at liberty to accept or reject their message, when they come to you, saying that people get accosted In their homes and work place, like they have no will power, is pure exaggeration.

true, but despite the fact that the atheist is uncertain, most of the ones on nairaland do not act like are, they look down on religious people and scoff at their beliefs. Surely, that shouldn't be the way someone searching for answers should act. One would expect that they will respect other people's views, because they themselves do not know how we came to be, but the reverse is always the case.
Correction Sir.
It behoves everyone to scoff at irrational thinking and irrational acts.
There is plenty to mock about religion and the behaviors of religious nuts.

Secondly, I don't remember, and I very sure that no religious person can say that they have accosted in their homes, offices, on the Streets, the trains or buses by evangelical atheists.
The opposite is the case. Christians award themselves the sole prerogative of harassing and telling other people that whatever they believe, other than Jesus and the Christian god, are wrong and condemnable.

if I were to ask you to why you are certain of the inexistence of God, I'm sure your reply will say that you're not certain of it, if that is the case, I don't think you're in the position to talk about enlightenment to theists, from what I've noticed, atheism is a belief system founded in uncertainty and heavy confusion , hence the job of opening our eyes with all due respect shouldn't be done by you guys.

I never said I was an atheist. I don't like labels but if one should label me the closest will be deism/panentheism. Maybe because the code in your brain is going haywire your have already labelled me one. Now in reply to your points:

1. I am not ok with the "fact" that some persons massacred people for whatever reason in the past. You also need to understand that atheism is not the sole reason for this. Religion, ethnicity, class, resources, politics... caused most of those massacres.

2. It doesn't matter whether I am okay with their support or non-support. As for LGBT and the rest, I don't like the act just the way I hate cigarette but I don't hate them (LGBT) just the way I don't hate my friends that smoke.

3. If I get your question, you are asking why I complain about religion. You can reread my previous response. As a reminder, I am not an atheist, I am a human being.

4. Religion began science? lol. Man began science not religion

5. Religion never interferes with politics? You are really naive if you say so and I am not surprised.

Finally to the question of consciousness: We don't know for sure, it boils down to belief and I have already told you mine.
Excellent rebuttal.
Christianity EtcRe: Why Do Christians Fear Atheists So Much ? by plaetton(op): 3:22pm On Aug 28, 2017
Sarassin:
I am not sure that it is a question of the fear of atheist’s I think it’s more subtle and deep-rooted than that. I see more of a self-righteous insecurity and that old chestnut, the safety in numbers rule allied with a certain degree of yearning for conformity, Christianity as it exists today is largely a collective acquiescence to belief in belief for its own sake. Most cannot carry the cross of Christ and walk in his shoes as required.

Many Christians will instantly point fingers to the relevant parts of their scripture that guarantees them eternal life but with each pointed finger they fail to see that it is themselves they seek to convince. Christianity has always been that way, it is a reactive religion from the days of the early church fathers, the entire redemptive nature of the Christian doctrine is based on refuting the accusations of others, the great apostle Paul himself on no less than four separate occasions was minded to protest ‘I am not lying', and was 'telling the truth' ‘before God’ clearly he was under pressure to justify his doctrine.

The entire religion was under pressure from its earliest inception, anyone who has studied the writings of Irenaeus (Against heresies) or even Justin Martyrs’ dialogue with Trypho will gain an understanding of the insecurities of early Christianity that persists till today.
Excellent analysis.

Plaetton, please I need to understand your position.

Are you just irreligious, or you do not accept the existence of order in the universe (order presupposes that the universe is guided and under control)?
Funny question.
So , it must one or the other ? cheesy

I am not just irreligious, but a bona fide atheist. I don't believe in the existence of a sky Papa.

Now, as per your second question.
Order or chaos depends upon what vantage point one views the universe.
If for example you lived near Jupiter or the Planet Mercury, all you would see is chaos.

However, a true African NEVER questions the existence of a Higher Force guiding the paths of men, and the course of the universe.
Interesting. shocked

" Never Questioning" things, never curious , never challenging the faculties of thought. Isn't that, perhaps the bane of our scientific and technological underdevelopment ?

You seem to have hit nail on the head with that one.

Let me repeat what I quoted so often here on matters of religion and existence.
" It is better to start from DOUBTS , then work your way to arrive at CERTAINTY, than it is to start with CERTAINTY, and then wobble in DOUBTS in the face of new knowledge or facts.

The religious posture seems to be the latter.

You must question everything until you arrive at CERTAINTY.
Christianity EtcWhy Do Christians Fear Atheists So Much ? by plaetton(op):
Because atheism is not a philosophical proposition, I find no need to wear my atheistic worldview as a badge. I tolerate the fact that the far majority of people I come into contact with everyday have one religious belief or another.
But what I cannot ever seem to understand is why Christians, who enjoy and relish advertising and promoting their own God /Jesus worldviews, actually seen to melt down into tantrums and convulsions whenever they encounter an atheist.

I have experienced this too many times, and have lost potentially good friendships with people of the Christian faith who are very very eager to preach their silly unsolicited stone age beliefs to me, but seem to go into convulsions when I reveal atheistic worldview to them.

Does it not mean that the entire edifice of faith and beliefs are built upon, based upon , and rely solely upon self- validations ?

Like I asserted in a recent thread, the entire edifice of religious belief and faith , gods and saviours , relies on acceptance , and then shared acceptance of same by others.
God begins to die when people, people like me, begin to reject the notion.

I really want to understand how a Christian mind reacts when they encounter a live atheist. I have seen the same repeating pattern of disappointment, resentment and a complex that follows whenever a Christian forces me to assert my atheistic worldview.

Their reactions and subsequent attitudes towards me is proof that religious belief is like a psychological Ponzi scheme, whereby everyone feels or receives Validation when the person above or below you reasserts or revalidates the same nonsense that you believe as your primary worldview.
When someone, an atheist like me, Threatens to invalidate that worldview, then the entire psychological Ponzi scheme becomes at risk, vulnerable to dismantling.

I had an encounter with a friend yesterday, a religious nut, who had no idea that I was an atheist.
In typical fashion, he provoked an argument on religion, but when I countered with facts, I could immediately see the melt down on his countenance. He couldn't stand the argument, because he had no facts, so he quickly disappeared. I know that that is probably the end of budding friendship.
But why, I ask ?

Why does he expect me accept and Validate his very very silly stone age beliefs, but melts down when I counter with facts based on hundreds of years of accumulated scientific knowledge ?
Isn't that proof that religious faith is based on nothing but mere wishful thinking ?
And that religious faith is simply the extreme version of DOUBTS , Doubts camouflaged by Fear ?

Excerpt :
"Moses saw a burning bush. Paul saw Jesus on the road to Damascus. St. Teresa had ecstatic visions.

When psychologist William Richards looks at religion, he sees mystical experiences everywhere. The same sort of experiences, he reasons, that come from mind-altering drugs.

That’s why he’s giving magic mushrooms to religious leaders, for a research project based at Johns Hopkins University and New York University.

“There are — it’s so hard to put this into language — sacred eternal experiences that the human being is capable of having. They seem to be at the origin of most religions,” he said. “What we call the eternal seems incredibly real.”

In the Hopkins and NYU study, two dozen clergy — including priests, pastors and rabbis — are taking controlled doses of psilocybin, the drug found in psychedelic mushrooms, under the watchful eye of scientists."

We celebrate his return because many idiots and pigs said he was dead, bed-ridden, unable to speak, etc. Some even vowed to commit suicide if he returned. Such was their level of confidence and hate.

If your father survives a serious illness that could have taken his life, I'm sure you'll celebrate it. PMB is more than a father to many of us.

Deal with it.
Actually, the facts remain that Buhari is chronically ill. If you know the meaning of "Chronic" , it means he will never recover from his afflictions.
The facts remain that he was near-death, he is still bedridden, we haven't heard speak yet, so we still assume that he is impaired, and he is hated by large swaths of the population.

Now, what exactly are you zombies celebrating ?
That he is feeling better now ? Ok , good for him and his family.

But what next ?
When is he likely to go back to London for more treatments and more expensive life-saving procedures ?
Is he fit enough for the grinding rigors of being President?
