PoliticsThomas Sankara - Africa's Greatest Leader by playmode(op): 3:58pm On Oct 18, 2011
ON OCTOBER 15 1987 Thomas Sankara and his comrades were assassinated. That day the black world suffered an irreplaceable loss.

Sankara, then the popular president of Burkina Faso, had a week earlier said: "While revolutionaries as individuals can be murdered, you cannot kill ideas".

Sankara is even more important than giants of the last century like Steve Biko and Robert Sobukwe. Sankara used power to serve the people. We don't know what Biko and Sobukwe would have done with power. And what Nelson Mandela and the ANC have done with power is not pretty.

Sankara the visionary demonstrated that only the people can change their circumstances with the support of a pro-people government that is committed to serving the majority, not the political and business elites.

In the mid-1980s Sankara already insisted that women's liberation was key to the liberation of all.

He followed this up with practical steps to end women's oppression, including outlawing polygamy, forced marriages (ukuthwala), the Core mutilation of women (harmful and degrading rites of passage) and was the first to make sure women were promoted to roles that were traditionally reserved for men

Can our leaders in power and outside of power take a lesson from Sankra? The Wikipedia shows that Sankara did the following:

"He sold off the government fleet of Mercedes cars and made the Renault 5 (the cheapest car sold in Burkina Faso at that time) the official service car of ministers.

He reduced the salaries of all public servants, including his own, and stopped the use of government chauffeurs and first class airline tickets.

He redistributed land from the rich and gave it directly to the peasants. Wheat production rose in just three years from 1700kg a hectare to 3800kg a hectare, making the country food self-sufficient over a mere three years.

Sankara opposed foreign aid, saying "he who feeds you, controls you".

He converted the army's provisioning store into a state-owned supermarket open to everyone (the first supermarket in the country).

He forced civil servants to pay one month's salary to public projects.

He refused to use the air conditioning in his office on the grounds that such luxury was only available to a handful of Burkinabés.

As president he lowered his salary drastically and limited his possessions to a car, four bikes, three guitars, a fridge and a broken freezer.

Right now, our country is in a deep political, economic and moral crises. The youth suffer while their leaders fight over tenders and positions.

Our intellectuals don't know how to think outside the dominant ideas that cause suffering and exclusion. It's time to look at the example of Sankara, to be inspired by it and trust in the people again. The time of politicians is over!

My hope is that more young people in South Africa are inspired by Sankara, not Kenny Kunene and Juluis Malema's millions while the people suffer!

Thank you for your selfless input. You know, after the xenophobic attack on African immigrants in South Africa. Unfortunately, South Africa has come to be known as hostile to their African brothers, that is why the rumor of butchering spread like wildness. Sometimes the predicament one faces depends on the kind of life he/she conducts which is testament to those engaged in different activities there.

It is good to know that you are integrated well and have good relationships with the locals. Contrary to what some people think or say based on stereotypes, there are kind people and not so kind people everywhere, it all boils down to how respectfully one is and present himself. I absolutely understand your point. I went through that Sowetan websites you pasted and many of the comments there by the locals are grossly ignorant and very generic. It is a dangerous trend. You are doing a great job by countering their unbalanced reasoning and making them understand to judge one based on the content of their character and not on few bad apples from the country of origin.

Actually, I would have preferred a closer accommodation to the training center but the price on outskirt of Newcastle which is close to a township is tempting. The course will last for 4months, although there is an close to the training center,it is kinda expensive. What do you suggest?

Well, the home affairs and the Saps need to put on the radar and asked critical questions. The menace can't just continue.
Please whatever you do, stay as far away from the township as possible. I am not familiar with Newcastle but I am sure you can find affordable accommodation in the city centre. I suggest you look for Newcastle based property agents on the internet and email them requesting for temporary student accommodation. They might ask for proof of your “course”  before they help.
The Municipals Government built well equipped student hostels all over the country that are quite affordable. The downside is that you might have to share a room with another student.

Thanks for taking the time to expatiate more . Individuals are different, people interpret things differently. Nevertheless, I couldn't understand the rumor about the butchering and so on. But I am aware that once you are deemed foreign, that you are easily stereotyped.

But all in all, South Africa seem like a beautiful place to do your thing and go. How far those Zulus in that natal area, I heard those guys can be something else, how is that true. I will be taking public transport everyday 20km to the campus, how safe is that? Anyways, don't mind my rambling, I am just trying to take precautionary measures as anyone would do when travel to a place he/she barely knows about.

As per your home affairs, they need to know who is worthwhile and who is not. You don't just give everyone visas without interviewing and scrutinizing their application well to know what they are going to do. That is one of the reasons some rugged guys troop to your country. This has also resulted to overtly generalization been exercised on Nigerians as a whole and other Africans.
I believe I am the best person to answer your question as a Nigerian living there. I am not sure what you mean by butchering  but I am here 10 years strong and I do not know of any one who has been butchered. Most of the violent crimes takes place in the townships ,you don’t have any business there so you are safe.

My wife is zulu and my best friend (Lungile) is zulu. I have never met kinder people. At first when you meet “some” of them they might just “shakara” you but just act cool and be respectful and you will blend in within a few minutes. The alleged Zulu aggression is also a stereotype!

The taxis (aka danfos) are just as Nigeria’s if you know what I mean. The taxi drivers can be rough sometimes but if you ever taken public transport in Nigeria , you should be fine. Whenever you are approaching your bus top ,just shout to the driver : “ Short left” . That means you want to stop at the next bus stop.

Don’t even talk about the home affairs. They are a useless bunch of idiots.

*Sigh* i wonder when you people will grow up huh Why should i be scared of Igbos? I did not partake in Biafra ,i don't make money from Nigerian Oil ,i am not even in the bleeped up country! Jeez you people make me sick because you behave and reason like 1886 Negros!

Who gives a f8ck about a war that was fought 40 years ago? Move the f8ck on.Your land is not that special and your Oil is not either.

Even if Nigeria divides today and Igbos are allowed to go their own way, your Biafra will not progress because you will be busy fighting each other within biafra for the biggest share of the pie.It is the typical nature of dumb Nigerians to fight over resources.

kenya has no Oil but it is more advanced and more developed than Nigeria.Seychelles ,Mauritius e.t.c have no Oil but the citizens enjoy a standard of living that rivals that of the pre-2008 USA.You people need to use your brains and stop all this tribalistic thread,it shows that you guys have inferiority complex. Why can't you intelligent guys open threads that will address the collective development of the country's regions instead of focusing on your region alone and referencing a silly war which tooks place many years before you were born.

It is the nature of dumb people to dwell on the past instead of learning from it.Your misguided agendas is what led you Igbos to vote in this dumbazz we now have the displeasure as well as shame of calling a president.Majority of Nigerians are primitive in their thinking ,that is why we are one of the least developed countries on the planet. While other countries are moving forward ,we are just moving backwards.Other people are making technological advances on the continent while we are still discussing which tribe is scared of which.

It is as if you Igbos have an itch and can't help yourselves. You mention the war at every given opportunity.I don't know who is more pathetic, you guys or the jews.Enough with the Biafra war stories already ,the news is 40 years stale. In your own capacity contribute to the development of your region and stop fronting the boring story of a war that has been told a million times.

The writer of the article is immature and deluded. The only people holding Nigeria together are the politicans who are benefitting from the corruption not biafra.Use your brain and get your analysis right.Yorubas and hausas are ready to go their seperate way asap. This is 2011 not 1966.

I for one do not associate with Igbos in my country of residence because of the way they commit heinous crimes here.I pray for the day Nigeria will break up so i can bear a different nationality and carry a different passport thereby escaping the stigma that Igbos criminals in this country have caused for all Nigerians.I have gained nothing from being associated with igbos under the banner of being a Nigerian and i will lose nothing when we split. For me it will be a breath of fresh air and a much needed split if it does happen.

There is no reason on Gods good Earth why NDLEA should go all out to broadcast that the man has been arrested for drugs smuggling when evidence is yet to be found. Nigeria is just a wild and lawless place; it wil take years (maybe decades) to heal the wounds from the low-self-esteem that the majority of our population is struck by. The NDLEA officials have nothing to gain (until there is evidence) outside giving loud interviews to a press that is equally id!otic, but for them thats enough to breach due process and expected protocol.

I weep for Nigeria.

I may be wrong but based on what i know; you cannot carry drugs in your stomach for more than 48hrs without dying. The acid in your stomach will dissolve the latex plastic used to package the drugs and the drug will burst in to your stomach after 24 hours leading to excruciating pain and ultimately death if you are not taken in to surgery quickly.

I believe this man has already spent more than 48hrs with NDLEA and he is still alive without exhibiting any sign of discomfort. There are no drugs in his stomach. The NDLEA should just admit quickly that they made a mistake and face the consequences.

So America started a war in Syria and Yemen? And Pakistan? This is news from another news to me.
Infact i give up here cos i dont even know your stand on Mugabe.
My thought on the whole issue is that America is in a no win situation here. If they act people will blame them for acting (e.g. Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc and in this case), if they dont people will blame them (e.g. Syria, Egypt, Rwanda etc). It really is an unenviable position to be.
I shudder anytime i wonder what would've happen to those Libyan if NATO hadn't intervened when they did. Meanwhile AU folded it's hands doing nothing just like it did in CIV, Rwanda, Somalia, Liberia etc
Well i know America never lifts it's fingers to help anyone if there's nothing to be gained from it. And i dont blame them for it. China and Russia does the same too. Time will tell what they will gain from this. With election coming so soon,i hope Obama is not kissing his chances bye if American soldiers start dying in Africa

Many of you have made good points. Some are pro America and some are anti America.I am Anti American Government.I depise the American Government and for good reason but i support this action as long as it is swift and does not include any hidden agenda. If they wipe out the LRA swiftly like sri lanka wiped out the tamil tigers,it will be a great day for Arica. The kony guy is barbaric and should be tortured befored being executed.

That being said ,remember vietnam? They said they were sending military advisors too and see what it led to ,a full scale wars where millions of people lost their lives. The US Pentagon must have a direct stragtegy and capture kony within 30days or they will start an avalanche of bloodshed that will spread all over central Africa.I will suggest covert operations instead of using visible troops.

@D-pharisee  do you have a link to the analysis you read regarding Oil being found in Uganda.Don't worry about those calling you a conspiracy theorist ,such accusations will arise when you dare to question the official story or the motives of their dear innocent US Government. They are feigning amnesia about the fact that the President of Rwanda Paul Kagame along with many of the top ranking military officers in the Ugandan Army were trained by the CIA.Even ordinary Ugandans know that Kagame is a deadly assassin and an American puppet.

@playmode /emperrorOlu,

I often enjoy reading your posts because you come off as quite smart (though dishonest sometimes), and I suspect you are my good friend Shango-tor (a genius in my book ); however, please never forget that we lost a very brutal civil war.
In my own book, Nigeria's policy since July 1966 has been a continuation of the counter-coup: a fear of Igbo resurgence and possible vengeance against those who committed genocide against the Igbo. Once you understand this basic fact, Ohanaeze's failures and inactions would make sense to you.

Pick up a book on Nigerian history from 1950 to date and read. You would learn a thing or two.
If we look at history of African states ,you will see that many African countries became banana republics because of populist movements and liberation movements.Don't worry about a policy that was made in 1966.That is in the past ,we are in the future now. What we should be doing is uniting as a people instead of always dwelling on the past and the civil war that many of us never fought in.

One of the reason why Igbos and Yorubas hardly get along is because everybody always make reference to the civil war.The sad part of it that most of the people who carry this on their heads were not even born at that time.

Let igbos produce a great leader ,without baggage and with great ideas and you will see intelligent people vote for him.We must do away with tribal politics and start practicing true and transparent democracy. There are other silent and credible Igbo groups who could field better candidates than the Ohaneze. We need a fresh face regardless of tribe not all these recycled dinosaurs.

Honestly ,i am not Shango-tor.

Let us be honest with our selves ,do you really think that Afeni Fere ,Ohaneze and Arewa really care about their people?

We don't need a civil war because we are not each others enemies. We need a revolution. The major traitors to the Nigerian people are the political parties and politicians. These politicans come from every tribe in Nigeria.

At this time where we are now as a country ,we are a failed state. It is time for us to stop saying ,i am Yoruba ,i am Igbo , i am Hausa e.t.c It time for us to stand up together and deal with these politicians once and for all.As long as we continue to promote PDP power sharing agenda ,we will never elect a good president.I am not against any tribe but i am against self righteous tribalists who think that only someone from their tribe can save this nation.

Many Igbos and ,Deltans and westerners supported GEJ because he is from the south. They thought he was the messiah but what has happened since he became president? He has betrayed the trust of the people who elected him and the status quo remains.

It is like dejavu! This cycle will continue ,even if the PDP is pressurized ,they will only support a corrupt Igbo to become president in the future. How does that benefit you and me? Do remember the story of barack Obama? Most blacks voted for him because he was black but you see how terrible he is as a leader almost resembling bush nowadays?

The only reason why we fight on this forum everyday over tribes is because our country is a failed state. If Nigeria was developed and up to par nobody will care what tribe the president came from.

Dumbazz ,if you were not so slave minded you will understand where i am coming from. What is the function of your silly ohaneze leaders?

Please point to ONE Single thing they have done in the past 20 years that you or a relative of yours has benefited from as an IGBO person. It is people like you who has allowed Africa to become a failed continent because all you do is follow populist leaders who are only out to enrich themselves like a mugu.Your Ohaneze does not represent Igbo people ,they represent themselves. The sooner you realize that the better for your sorry azz.

FYI I am no tribalist ,i am an African who is sick and tired of this follow follow mentality that has a stronghold on majority of Africans.I diss yoruba leaders too when they f8ck up.As far as i am concerned , afeni feres ,Ohaneze ,arewas e.t.c are all birds of the same feather.GOD gave you a brain, use it and stop promoting ideas that does not benefit your people.

Your Ohaneze leaders should be tied to the stake and shot point blank in their heads. They are of no use to Igbos.Let me pose these question to you since you claim to be intelligent:

How come the Ohaneze is not using it's energy at this point in time to fight for better schools in the east ,better medical care ,better infrastructure. How come they are not clamouring for better living condition for igbos.2015 is still 3 years away ,why can't they focus on more pressing issues instead of campaigning for the presidential throne?

In a civilzed society devoid of slave mentality ,the Ohaneze will be a torn in the flesh of the current Governers of the east. They will be keeping tabs on the Governors and making sure that they do what they were elected to do.Instead of doing that they are associating with crooks ,taking kick backs and awarding chieftaincy titles to drug dealers and 419 kingpins.

My friend wake d f8ck up and stop thinking like a typical African slave for once.Like i said use your brain and free your self from populist agenda.Your Ohaneze means poo to me because they are bunch of crooks.

Here in South Africa ,the leader of your Ohaneze is a well known drug baron  who has been arrested countless times.Majority of the Ohaneze members here are into one crime or another. Are those the the kind of people you are proud of ?How come the leaders and majority of the members of ohaneze overseas are criminals? Is that an organisation that you will expect any law abiding person to respect or take serious. An igbo president does not mean a better life for igbos. What we need in Nigeria is a president who will take care of everyone not one appointed because he is Igbo ,Hausa or Yoruba.

The last elections has proved to everyone that Igbos are not very bright especially when it comes to making decisions that will be beneficial to their people.Igbos have been like this for a long time and nothing will ever change because you guys are selfish to one another and never learn from your mistakes.Igbos won't be president in 2015 because GEj will run for office,i am suprised you geniuses have not figured that out yet.Keep wasting money on presidential campaigns instead of building your region.

When Gej announces his decision to run again for the presidency ,guess who will be the first to endorse him once ghana must go bags have been passed around? Yep your long throat ,selfish ,ugly Ohaneze!

Nigerian politicans are stone cold killers, they have killed this nation and unless they are killed ,we will never be free.

As soon as we rise up and assasinate all corrupt political leaders both in Abuja and other parts of the country, the better for us.

I can't vouch for other countries but in johannesburg ,new off ramps are built and completed every month.Once the off ramps are completed they are immediately open to the public without any fanfare. We need to really address how Governemnt is wasting money.I am sure that small ceremony to commission the bridge would have cost the the tax payers no less than N50000.

We like fanfare too much in Nigeria that is why we have a messed up Government and a messed up country.By the way is it true the amount spent was bogus? Fashola may be better than the other Governors but that does not mean he is "really" a competent and trustworthy Governor especially when you compare him to his peers in civilized countries.

I mean name one good thing they have done that the Nigerians masses or African masses have benefited from ,just one good thing. And please don't talk about monetary AIDS because we all know they AID they send is used to arm rebels.

Americans themselves hate their Government and question their lies all the time so i don't understand why Africans kiss their azz all the time.

The Chinese of course have their own hidden agenda but at least they invest in Africa and create jobs. The west on the hand prefers to bomb Africa and build military bases. Where does your loyalty lie? With the west or with your fellow Africans. If we are develop as a continent and a race we have to look out for our own best interest first and stop caring what the "broke" west thinks. Do you really think the west wants Africa to prosper? Please don't be deluded. Africa has no friends ,we are regarded as the lowest ranking race on the planet ,we are seen as pawns to used at will by super powers. The sooner we get our act together and start making decisions that will benefit our people more the better for our future generations. We may be independent but many of our brothers are still enslaved in their minds.

Do some research and find out about the New World Order. Gadaffi was attacked because he wanted to establish an African gold currency that will never loose value. He was not attacked because he was attacking his people. Why is the US and UN quiet about Bahrain and Saudi Arabia?

And yes i will say this because they are true:

9/11 was an inside Job orchestrated by the CIA and the Mossad with the approval of Bush, Cheney , the Rockefellers and the Bilderberg group. Osama had no knowledge of the attack ,that is why his family in the US was allowed to leave the US 24hrs after the attack.

Please do some research and watch documentaries : http://www.911docs.net the WTC 7 building was what broke the camel's back for me because that was a clear lie. Questioning the official story does not make you a conspiracy theorist,it  just means that you can’t be fooled easily. Watch those docs made by real Americans and tell me if those are conspiracy theories or questions asked based on real undeniable facts.

At least 90% of the hijackers were trained at CIA camps in the United States in the late 80s and early 90s during the Afghan/russia war.

Osama Bin Laden died in December 2001 from lung sickness. The guys killed in the 2011 in Pakistan were top ISS officers. That is why the picture was not released. All other Osamas used after that date in videos were actors who had their faces modelled to look like him.Even his son said those actors were not his father.

Obama may be a democrat but he is a member of the same satanic cult sect(Skull and bone) which Bush belongs to. He is also a hand tool of George soros who is one of the leading members of bilderberg group aka the NWO mafia.

Now i will also tell you this even though it has not happened yet, there is a new deliberate plane to crash the US economy once again within the next 18 months. The culprit as usual is the bilderberg group. At the moment we don't know what they intend to gain from this move but some analysts feel that Chinese investments in the US property market are being targeted. You see the US is now poo scared of china so they are trying everything to slow china down to no avail.

Africa is the world's new battleground. On one side the communists russia ,china and other side the west. If our leaders do not stand up and make decisions that are only beneficial to African then you will see new wars erupt in Africa. We are our own worst enemy because unlike the Asians ,the west e.t.c we don’t have a mind of our own. We are always looking to follow while others lead.

Dalai Lama ko! , Dalai yansh ni! Trust africans to reason in a "Negro" manner. Why should Zuma compromise the economic ties of his country with china because of one individual?

Why can't you guys stop being slaves to the west and for once think about what is best for Africans.Zuma may be the worst SA president ever but not allowing Dalai lama to enter SA is a wise move.Should south africans now be made to suffer because of one man?

China is the new super power and anyone who goes against them is just committing economic suicide.Zuma's initial support for gadaffi is also a great move and not suprising.Gadaffi contributed more than anyone else on the African continent to the freedom of South Africa.Fidel Castro and Gadaffi matter most to the people of South Africa more than anyone else.Have you forgotten that fidel actually sent his soldiers to come and fight the Apartheid Government? You people talk about freedom ,do you know that Gadaffi single handedly freed Africa from telecommunications slavery? If not for gadaffi ,companies like Glo may not exist today. How quick you forget those who have done great deeds in order to please the imperialists.

Zuma should look out for SA's interests ,FXCK everybody else.If the situation was reversed will dalai lama not do the same thing?

Leave South Africa alone and focus on your country where the shxt has hit the fan.Has jonathan not made horrible blunders himself? Jonathan is  an obama slave with no common sense or mind of his own. That is why up till date the west are still polluting his home  region of Niger delta.

By the way a lot of people regard Tutu as a joker who flip flops like the wind.

The mugus have finally caught up with the game, coupled with the global economic crunch that is making the omnibus very cautious with their money.

It is not because of efforts EFCC that reduced 19,everyone knows that EFCC is a puppet body set up by number one Nigerian thieves to harass their political opponents who happens to be thieves as well.

If EFCC is really a body set up to combat crime,Gej and his wife will be in jail by now.

LagosBoy don't waste your time. Most Nigerians and most nairalanders are dumb sheep. They are too mentally lazy do some research and find out the truth about what is really happening in the world. It is one of the reasons why i have stopped commenting on nairaland. It has become boring and full of brainwashed folks who claim to be educated and intelligent but lack the initiative to question the "official story".

The Arabs despise western Governments ,Asians despise western governments but only Africans (the black race) seems to kiss their azz and look to them for hand outs. You will even see Nigerians on NL making comments like : Go marines , go navy seals e.t.c as if the activities of the marines ,CIA ,NSA ,Navy seals is beneficial to Africans.

Until Africans wake the fxck up and stop swallowing every propaganda fed to them by their slaves masters ,we will never progress as a continent and as a people.
