SELFWORTH: Its true .

As long as we all change as individuals with the change starting from the ruling party, House of rep, senate, governors, local govt, justice system, police, army, churches, schools, teachers, universities etc.

Basically, in every sphere of the society we need change even on NL but we must be the one to change.
Experience has shown that individuals will hardly change unless there is a punishment/reward system clearly understood and enforced. The people want sharia (core north), some people want state police (SW), some want new states, regionalism, more federal allocation etc. To simply ask them to change is pretty naive in my opinion. And that is where Fashola does not get it.

In practical terms the people must clearly identify with constitution (rules, and guideline) to subscribe to them, and make necessary changes. The current constitution does not meet the people's basic need. Change it must!

Some should tell this guy, that he doesn't know what he is talking about. He is a hypocrite, who runs with the hare and chase with the hounds!

Is this not same fellow who wanted state police, and more funds for his state? Are we not in same country where people are agitating for SNC, resource control vs removal of on-shore off-shore dichotomy?

Is not hypocritical for Fashola to suggest that nothing need change fundamentally in the constitution for all or any of these to be achieved? Doesn't this guy know that the foundation of the country, as enshrined in the constitution is very shaky, and the people want change? If he he believe attitude can change without new laws, why did he government introduce new laws in Lagos state?

Something is very wrong with the picture Fashola is painting. I think he has lost it! Clearly, he or people he represents or both don't know what they wont.

Fashola: We Can Succeed With the Worst Constitution

27 Dec 2012

By Gboyega Akinsanmi

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has expressed a divergent view on the 1999 Constitution currently under review, saying there is nothing practically wrong with the country’s legal instrument.

He took the standpoint in an address he delivered at the annual Christmas Eve dance, which was organised by the Island Club in Lagos where he observed that the antidote to Nigeria’s challenges “lies more with the people”.

The governor, who addressed traditional rulers, top government functionaries, captains of industry and diplomats, among others, therefore argued that Nigeria could succeed with the “worst constitution”.

He also faulted some radical views, which have ominously predicted a revolution as a way out of Nigeria’s socio-economic and political problems, adding that the resort to revolution would not bring about a better life.

He specifically explained that the current challenges confronting the country “lie more with the people of Nigeria themselves and the value choices that they make as a people in their day-to-day living.”

He said: “There is nothing wrong with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is the people that make the constitution and not the other way round. I think that with the right values, we can succeed even with the worst constitution. The constitution can only be as good as what we put into it.”

He cited Ghana and Dubai as examples of places, which the governor said, had really made meaningful progress because their people decided to change their country through hard work and dedication, pointing out that the only thing which the countries “had was the will to have a change of attitude.”

“It is instructive to mention these things because they are easy to do if we resolve that we want to do it. I know it is possible because we can all see what has happened in Ghana. We can see what has happened in Dubai.

“There is nothing that they have that we do not have. But there is something we have which we must change,” he said.

“I have seen the turnaround of many societies and history has shown clearly and consistently that it does not take more than 10 years to do so and within two years, when people resolve to change what they do not accept, you begin to see results that propel them to that which they desire to achieve.

“Law and order must be our gold standard. No revolution will bring a better life for us either, because I have heard the various calls for a revolution.

“But the revolution we need is in our hearts. No leader can also force us to do that unless we are persuaded that it is necessary and I believe it is necessary,” he said.

Fashola urged Nigerians to decide what they want and work hard towards achieving it, adding that the time “has come for Nigerians to replace finger-pointing and blame trading with individual, family, community, state and national action to resolve and work hard to change the things we as a people do not accept.

“Sometimes, I struggle to understand where we want to go. But I am clear in my mind the kind of society I want to live in, grow old in and die in. In my lifetime, I want to see reliable electric power supply in Nigeria. It is not just praying about it. It is about talking about it and doing something about it.”

He explained that the state government had in that vein not only started “to produce transformers and downstream electrical equipment to take advantage of the distribution aspect of the Federal Government’s electric power sector reform when it comes on stream, but also built an independent power project (IPP) to supply constant electricity to some health and judiciary institutions in Lagos Island.”

He named other interventions his administration had made to improve the life of Lagos residents as including the elevation of Gbagada General Hospital to the State’s University Teaching Hospital annex, to serve as a cardiac and renal centre, kidney centre and burns unit; the construction of the light rail project to improve transportation; as well as improvement in security through the establishment of the Security Trust Fund, among others.

According to him, if Nigerians want things to get better, its citizens would have to change themselves, adding that the nation would also make tremendous progress if Nigerians resolved to adhere to the rule of law.

In his welcome address, Chairman of Island Club, Prince Ademola Dada, commended the governor for the positive reforms and development in the state, including the building of roads and the huge investment in security as well as the promulgation of the Road Traffic Law.

He said 2013 would be a busy year for Fashola, adding that the club would work with his administration to complement its efforts “in making Lagos remain the leading state among other states of the federation.”

koruji: You people must think this forum is full of your like.
It worries the ear to hear such false honesty from your lying fingers: "For your information I am not supporting GEJackal or PDP. I am just stating the obvious that Fashola has done close to nothing...".
Wonders shall never end.

Let's compare the Bayelsa and Lagos budgets for 2013 for a minute.
Lagos' budget N490 billion - definitely the largest of all states.
Bayelsa's budget of about N385 billion, about 3/4 that of Lagos.

Now for some real accounting:
First, Bayelsa's budget doesn't count its share from 100s of billions GEJ pipes through NDDC, amnesty and other backdoors but that is it for Lagos.
Second, Bayelsa's population is about 3 million at the max, Lagos officially about 12 million but well known worldwide to be 15 to 18 million.

Do the math:
The budget for Bayelsa ==> N130K per head
The budget for Lagos a meagre ==> N33K per head.
Yet, Lagos has accomplished more, with that meagre resource and a lot of ingenuity, than Bayelsa under GEJ (and his thiefing benefactor) accomplished over the last 10 years.

We know who is commissioning the first suspension bridge in Nigeria.
The same one who keeps rolling out completed projects one after the other.
Even with all the pilfering that GEJ is doing for Bayelsa
There is nothing to show beyond the Bayelsa big-men accumulating houses and getting jailed in British Courts.

Shame on you for being so blind.
And may you be close to nothing the way you have judged Fashola's accomplishments close to nothing.
My guy, leave Bayelsa out of this. There will be time and space hopefully allocated to scrutinize Bayelsa.

What is that crap about suspended bridge? The same bridge the private concessionaire will cut my throat with huge toll to use in order to recover their investment?

Is Lagos State not receiving FG allocations in billions of Naira on monthly basis? Is Lagos State not generating above N26 billion monthly in IGR? Multiply these figures by 6 or even 3 years, and show us a quality work done with this huge fund accrued by your principal - Fashola, in this period of time?

Quit showing us Lekki tolled road, or some elitist suspended bridge that will be massively tolled! Where are the huge hospital to cater for the poor populace? One of you AC.N touts claimed he commissioned some new water project, why is there no running water in homes? Or this the same Obj style of commissioning Power projects only to bequeath darkness on us? The Lagos-Badagry 10 lane road is a World Bank funded project, Ikorodu Road expansion that is still on paper is awaiting world bank loan! What is Fashola doing with N30 billion monthly income? Does he simple share it with Tinubu?

Those who come to equity must do so with clean hands. You brainwashed AC.N goons should stop pulling wools over people's eyes, either Fashola is as clueless as they come; a massive failure or chronic thief, you lots have to pitch your tent in one of those camps. At over N30 billion monthly income and flower planting to show for it, the myth of performing Fashola is busted!

Sincere 9gerian: You wrote " I see Fashola work everywhere". Pls which part of everywhere are you talking about because guys are everywhere searching for these same projects? Are these projects photoluscent and invisible? Even after placing N5million bounty on these projects, we are yet to find them.
Anyway, having come this far, we cant afford to give in now. The search continues...
Na wa o. I have scoured far and near for the wonders of Fashola. It's appears to be as elusive as the golden fleece. I may have to surmise that it cost over 30 billion Naira to water already planted flowers. Perhaps those flowers are from Mars or some distant planet.

Now do I get to lay claim on the N5m prize money?

Ikorodu-Ketu expansion work is expected to be carried out from this money.
How much is the total cost of the Ikorodu road expansion project? How much is the current IGR of Lagos state? What is the IGR and Federal Allocation used for? How many other states in the Federation borrow huge sum from external source to finance road expansion? Answers to these question will give you an inkling to the massive fraud and shenanigans going on in Lagos State Government under Fashola's watch. Bottomline is why Fashola and Tinubu loots Lagos, the mindless minions in Nairaland other media (print and online) use massive propaganda to launder Fashola and re-direct gullible folks to attack the PDP. Sad that many people are fooled to believe the Fashola myth and legend.

Every available evidence shows the flower planter is a complete mediocre, and total fraud. Lagosians, and patriotic Nigerians should ask for more transparency in Lagos State finances, even though they might not get it!

Thousands died in the several rioting consequently. Below is a BBC News report in the Obj's era. Our memories might be short, but these riots were well documented. Obj's era withnessed far more religious related riots and killings than we have today. And he exacerbated the Niger Delta militancy by his abrasive method and his ceaselessness:

Police fire on Nigeria rioters

Fresh fighting has broken out in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna, after Monday's march by Christians protesting against the proposed introduction of Islamic law erupted into violence.

Dozens of bodies lay on the streets as police struggled to quell riots between Christians and Muslims, Reuters news agency reported.

The fighting is still spreading and we have called for reinforcement from neighbouring states
Police commander
"In the working class Sabo district, I saw police open fire indiscriminately on Muslim and Christian gangs but neither side appeared to retreat and corpses littered the streets," Reuters correspondent Felix Onuah said.

With police admitting the situation is desperate, latest reports say the Nigerian army has now deployed troops in Kaduna to assist them in controlling the violence.

Police said troops from the One Mechanised Division based in Kaduna had been sent to help restore calm as the state government ordered businesses and schools to shut.

Police say they picked up 25 bodies from the streets overnight.

Curfew

Last night the authorities imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew and warned that anybody found on the streets after dark would be "decisively dealt with".

But the curfew was ignored in parts of the city where Christian and Muslim gangs set up roadblocks.

Sharia is possible in some places in the north but Kaduna is a different ball game. It is too mixed
Human Rights Monitor spokesman Festus Okoye
Several buildings - including churches and at least one mosque - were seen burning in the town on Tuesday.

"I am appealing to the Christian and Muslim leaders to caution their followers and desist from the ongoing riots," Mr Shekari said in a broadcast on local television.

The violence came after thousands of Christians took to the streets protesting against the proposed introduction of Islamic law in the state of Kaduna.

Eyewitnesses said counter-chants by Muslims who support Sharia quickly degenerated into fighting.

Market ablaze

The main Kaduna market was set on fire and several cars bearing Islamic slogans were attacked.

Speaking from his office in Kaduna, Human Rights Monitor spokesman Festus Okoye said there had been massive destruction.

Despite the fears of Christians, the state governor has made no firm commitments to establish Sharia law in Kaduna, but has set up a committee to study how it might be implemented.

The Sharia issue has become increasingly divisive in Nigeria since the announcement last October by another state in the north, Zamfara, that it would introduce the code.

Sharia courts began operating in Zamfara last month.

Sensitive area

Although several rural states in northern Nigeria which are overwhelmingly Muslim have already announced their intention to introduce Sharia, Kaduna is a far more sensitive and politically important state.

Recent Sharia sentences in Zamfara
100 lashes for extra-marital sex
Motorbike taxi operators jailed for carrying women
Drinker lashed 80 times in public

The city of Kaduna is one of the largest in northern Nigeria, and the state has a substantial indigenous Christian population.

Muslims have repeatedly stressed that Sharia will not affect Christians. They say that the Nigerian press, mainly controlled by Christians from the south of Nigeria, has exaggerated the issue.

Religion: Nigeria's latest flashpoint

By News Online's Justin Pearce

Fighting between Christians and Muslims in the northern Nigerian state of Kaduna is the latest challenge faced by the still-young democratic government in holding together one of Africa's most diverse countries.

Over the past year, fighting has set Yoruba against Hausa, Christian against Muslim, and communities against their neighbours throughout Africa's most populous country.

Usually, the conflict has been sparked by local rivalries, but fuelled by wider regional resentments - between the commercial hub of the south-west and the politically dominant north, or the plundered oil fields of the south-east.

Troubled transition
May 1999
Inter-communal fighting in Warri, Delta region
June 1999
Hausa-Yoruba fighting in Ibadan
July 1999
Hausa-Yoruba fighting in Sagamu
July 1999
Hausa-Yoruba fighting in Kano
Oct-Nov 1999
Hausa-Yoruba fighting in Lagos
Nov 1999
Police killed in Odi, Delta region
Even at local level, fighting takes on an ethnic or religious character, since Christianity and the Yoruba and Ibo people are associated with the south, and Islam and the Hausa people with the north.

Nigeria's existence as a country is purely the result of borders drawn by colonial pens.

Federal flaws

At independence, a federal constitution was adopted with a view to giving a greater degree of self-determination to Nigeria's regions.

But since democracy returned to Nigeria last year, and President Obasanjo adopted a less authoritarian style of government than his military predecessors, the shortcomings of the federal system have been all too obvious.

However one might redraw the internal boundaries, there will always be states in Nigeria that reflect something of the country's ethnic and religious diversity.

The most serious ethnic clashes in recent months have occurred in cities such as Lagos and Kano which have a large ethnically mixed population.

Religious mix

And so it is with religion. As part of the greater freedoms offered under the Obasanjo government, several Muslim-dominated states in the north have expressed interest in introducing Sharia, or Islamic law.

Muslim men at prayer Sharia arrived peacefully in the overwhelmingly Muslim Zamfara
The first state to implement Sharia was the overwhelmingly Muslim Zamfara, and there the transition passed off largely peacefully.

But in Kaduna - which has a substantial Christian minority - the mere mention of Sharia has sparked bloodshed and destruction.

Perhaps wisely, the Kaduna state authorities said they would start investigating ways in which Sharia could be introduced, rather than imposing it unilaterally.

Moreover, Nigerian Muslim leaders have said all along that Sharia will not affect the lives of the Christian minority in Sharia states.

But such assurances did little to ease the fears of Christians in Kaduna, who turned out in their thousands in an initially peaceful demonstration against the proposed introduction of Sharia.

Scuffles between demonstrators and Muslim bystanders soon grew into far more serious fighting and arson.

President's dilemma

The question now is how to contain the violence.

President Olesegun Obasanjo President Obasanjo: Sending in troops could prove disastrous
Police in Kaduna have appealed for reinforcements. Another more risky option would be the deployment of soldiers.

Calling out the army to quell civil unrest is bound to be politically dangerous in a country where soldiers have in the past needed little provocation in staging coups d'etat - and where the present government is trying to prove itself as the guarantor of democracy.

President Obasanjo, a born-again Christian, also has to tread carefully lest he be accused of anti-Muslim bias.

The last time the president called out the troops was in November, when soldiers went into the Niger Delta following the killing of a dozen policemen by local militant youths.

The result was yet more bloodshed, with soldiers blamed for hundreds of deaths, and President Obasanjo being forced to apologise.

Memories of that incident are certain to haunt the president as he ponders how to deal with this latest symptom of his country's difficult transition.

The truth is that until we actually sit down as a people to study this civil war issue and get the actual story behind it, then it would keep coming up and the same cycle of reopening old wounds would continue even when we all are in the grave........
Some people would rather we bury the event of the civil war and move on. How can those who were not personally affected understand the feelings of those who bore the brunt? This apathy is the core of the sectional protest against Prof Achebe, which led to the ethnic motivated nomination.

Suppose 60% of Nairalanders, like me, support Chinua Achebe and think he doesn't deserve to be on the Hall of Shame, while just 40% think he deserves it. Because of the way voting works, Achebe's supporters won't have any way of influencing the results of the contest, even though they are in the majority. They may complain, but their complaints won't be counted, even though they are in the majority. In other words, the hall of shame system is biased towards negativity and hatred, even when it's held by a minority of members. And that's why the hall of shame should be terminated asap.

HNosegbe: Point of correction please... In sane societies people like Tony Anenih would be rotting in jail.
I agree. Likewise Buhari, and Tinubu.

jide4lagos: but they speak the mind of the majority
Frankly I don't know what's on the mind of the majority. Their is no poll to ascertain that at the moment. But my argument is that CNPP do not speak for all Nigerians as I cannot recall when they were elected to do so. But that does not take away the validity of the position.

In anycase, why do all these parties approach issues with mentality of market women. Why can't they go to the court to argue their case rather than this crass approach of noisemaking ala Tunde Bakera.

I can't recall when CNPP was elected to speak for Nigerians. Clearly, they don't speak for me!

It's sad Seun is allowing tribalist Yoruba peeps and MOD to ruin his business.

The earlier he takes action the better for him. No need reminding him that before Facebook, there was HI5 and MySpace.

I am sure Seun has come a along way to loose goodwill now.

Imagine the reckless and dishonest citation Jarus gave to Achebe in the name of 'Nairalander' rather that referring to the tribalist section that nominated him.
