On the other hand Nigeria has tested 10,000 people for a population of 200 million people with 1,273 testing positive which is 11% of totql people testing positive out of the 10,000 tests and 40 deaths recorded.
So the fact that you do not test or record more cases does not mean the people are not infected. The earlier you test early, isolate the patients and treat them before their health deteriorates just as Ghana is doing. As with everything else, Nigeria is bungling this. By now, Nigeria should have done at least 1m tests. 10,000 is paltry for Nigeria population and exposure. This is not going to be over soon. |

You actually need power to influence a lot of decisions in this world. I have answered this earlier. Check below PointB: Position is very important, but thats only if you know how to use it. Ojukwucriminal: Yeah, I understand you. Politics is all about interest and I dont think the interest of the North will be well represented In peter obi's government either.
And if what happened in 1999 is anything to go by, you'll remember the yorubas voted for olu falae massively because they felt the interest of the region will be well protected and represented under him, meanwhile the rest of Nigeria voted for olusegun obassanjo because we all felt he could represent and champion the Nigerian interest. at the end of the day the majority had their way. To the best of my knowledge obassanjos government worked in tandem with and wasn't inimical to the growth of the Southwest like most tinubu fans will have us believe. If championing the interest of the Igbos at the expense of other Nigerians is what you think onyeama isn't capable of, then I concur with your line of argument. Asides that, I believe onyeama would enjoy huge conciliations from all parts of Nigeria because he is a detrabilized Nigerian, so the Igbos queuing behind peter obi wont make any difference really. If you should take into account the allignment of buharis CPC with Tinubu's ACN one would agree that the cabals as at then were tinubu and his men, but buhari made his own appointments and the cabals we have today are all from the north. The cabals who made good luck Jonathan president were not thesame cabals who controlled his government. Cabals during electioneering period do not really tend to be cabals after campaigns. They become inconsequential to the scheme of things afterwards. I doubt if Peter Obi can even represent the interest if Igbos as the interest of Igbo are varied, just as that other Nigeria ethnic groups. Peter Obi for starters cannot grant Igbos Biafra (Peter Obi does not believe in Biafra), neither can he restructure Nigeria by himself. The best he could do is to attempt to bridge the infrastructure gaps in the east. I doubt if he'll succeed in this though as Nigeria will be in serious financial crisis in the coming years base on current trajectory. And Peter Obi success or failure will greatly favour the North (and the rest of Nigeria) as it will either make Nigeria or demystify whatever claim we (Igbos) have about our abilities. Furthermore, it will silence cries of marginalization, defeat IPOB, and enable peaceful reign for the president who comes after. That is a big win for One Nigerianist and patriots. This scenario will apply if Onyeama were to be president too. Only that Igbos will argue (as Yorubas often do with Obj) that the president wasn't their choice as it was imposed and didn't represent them. |

Politics › Lockdown Nigeria: A Cure Worse Than The Disease? by PointB(op): 11:32am On Apr 02, 2020*. Modified: 12:35pm On Apr 02, 2020 |
In the beginning Covid-19 is a virulent disease. A fast spreading one at that. It preys mainly on the aged, and the ills - the weakness among us. If care solution is not found, not many elders (read elder statesmen) will remain while it holds sway. Covid-19 look set to keep worlds aged population to a barest minimum, and reduce health care burden of countries by taking out those with underlying health condition. So far, that appears it stated objectives, baring a few exception. Humanity are refusing to succumb. And so the retreat behind our fortresses.
Lockdown Since China lockdown Wuhun, the first epicentre of the novel Corona Virus aka COVID-19, the word 'lockdown' is racing for top spot for the theme of the year. Even faster than the causative element, Corona Virus. Since then, Italy, Spain, US, South Korea, UK, Iran and so many other countries have locked down in one form or the other, all with varying result. Suffice to say, infection rates, and death keeping climbing, almost like a vertical line. Except for China, whose figures are at best dodgy. Nigeria have now joined the lockdown bandwagon.
A dash of light Perhaps I should add that China in preparatory for the lockdown, built a massive hospital in about 9 days. US approved a massive 2.2 trillion Covid-19 relief package - which guarantee jobs, enterprises survival, and personal income during the crisis. Besides, many of these countries have far better health systems, and other underlying infrastructure. These are prepared to emerge from the crisis, relatively intact. And their leaders have made many assurances to their citizens to this effect.
Ride or die Nigeria without the semblance of robust infrastructure in any sphere; nor functional/trusted governance system, has join the bandwagon. The government has restricted movement in Lagos, Ogun, and Abuja. Effectively locking down millions of their citizens, and of course commercial activities.
In doing so, are they likely to succeed, where far prepared nations struggle? What are our chances of defeating the insidious virus that has almost decapitated our command and control structure? The man at the centre of this system - Chief of Staff is already crippled by the virus. The President himself is here and there, literally confused. The Vice President has been in isolation even before the virus made its home run.
A cure worse than the disease? For low income countries, where survival is matter of daily hustle, lockdown may create more problems than solution. Nigeria Government has promised 'palliatives', but the people say it is 'Audio' palliative i.e. empty promises, noise, and little action. Nevertheless, the FG have force people to hunker down, food or no food. And have unleashed the security agent to enforce this. Surely, the security agent may succeed in forcing the populace to stay indoors. If and when the virus passes, they will emerge from the homes destitute, having spent the business/working/trading capital to stay alive. Apart from reaction to the immediate problem of hunger, the resultant poverty will lead to bigger problems such as poorer sanitations, and eventually other outbreak of diseases. And many rendered poor by virus may not be able to afford basics needs food, shelter and drugs. Violent crimes will rise. And these may lead to more deaths, perhaps more than Covid-19 may claim. A recipe for disaster.
A way out Lockdown will not work in this part of the world (Nigeria) with the disorganisation, and poor public health system. Lockdown will not work because government will not guarantee loss income, or loss capital for employees and employers. Sooner or later people may choose to combat hunger on the streets; and face down security personnel, virus or no virus, than to die of hunger.
Covid-19 planners and researchers should perhaps change tact from establishing the number of infected people to working on prevention. How long will it take to confirm the efficacy of Chloroquine for Covid-19 (SARS-COV2), bearing in mind that it's efficacy for SARS-COV1 is not in doubt. Government agencies, working side by side with WHO should quickly conclude their research on Chloroquine and make it available for free for the populace, giving specific guideline for Chloroquine administration for Covid-19 prevention. The earlier this is done the faster we can prevent infection, and get back to 'normal'.

Politics › Re: Has Buhari/FG Actually Mishandled COVID-19 Pandemic? by PointB: 3:41pm On Apr 01, 2020 |
PassingShot: 1. I already answered it in the original post.
2. If people have been dying as a result of suspected COVID case, we would have known. We haven't heard people dying mysteriously. Have you?
Till now, no govt in the world quarantines people just because they're returning from abroad. Where are the facilities and resources to keep thousands of people, including providing for their needs? So, if people choose to be irresponsible, the govt must still be blamed? Like those who filled wrong details in their form to enable contact tracing, right?
Many of you are unnecessarily hysterical. 1. No you did not answer in it in the original post. You said our Covid-19 case was low compared to other nations. What you failed to mention was the number of test we have done versus other countries. When you do those number of tests, that will give you fairly good idea as per the rate of infection and related deaths. 2. As said earlier, it is only when you know the cause that you will know the effect. People die every now and then of pneumonia induce deaths. Pneumonia is not a strange disease, it's a very common one in these part of the world. Now the question is how many of these pneumonia deaths are related to Covid-19. There is only one way to tell - TEST for covid-19, during the illness or at death to determine the root cause of the death. As for quarantining, you start by closing your borders (early); anyone who come in after that is subject to quarantine. Ghana quarantined over a thousand travelers in this outbreak, and placed them in a 3 Star Hotels at government expenses. China is currently doing that, as is South Korea. I think they understand that Mandatory Quarantine is more cost effective than contact tracing that comes with symptomatic infections. Something that sounds like rocket science to FG planners, including the so-called Chief of Staff, and their sympathizers. |
Politics › Re: Has Buhari/FG Actually Mishandled COVID-19 Pandemic? by PointB: 3:01pm On Apr 01, 2020 |
PassingShot: I have read a lot of wailing and criticism about the FG’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic since it arrived in Nigeria on Feb 25th. The most recent was reactions to a thread comparing Nigeria’s handling of the crisis to that of UK. Expectedly but sadly, a lot of ignorant commenters were dancing albeit nakedly based on the newspaper’s report which didn’t even say that the UK is handling the pandemic better than Nigeria.
If any unbiased person wants to make any comparison about govts handling of the pandemic, their objective analysis will include parameters such as each govt’s efforts before COVID arrived at their shores (very important), each govt’s immediate response as soon as COVID arrived in their country, number of infected persons (confirmed) and lastly and most importantly, the number of deaths recorded as a result of the pandemic. But since many Nigerians have allowed their common sense to be affected by prejudice and hatred, they have abandoned these relevant parameters in making evaluating the govt’s response to the crisis. Now let’s quickly look at the following facts:
1. Measures taken by the Nigerian Govt before a COVID case was discovered in Nigeria: Long before the pandemic found its way into Nigeria, the FG embarked on monitoring body temperature of people flying into the country to be able to discover who may have showed any signs of the disease. By this time and despite that the disease was at their shores, USA, UK, Iran and many other “saner clime” countries were not even taking this measure. Dr. joe Abah did a thread on it and the World Health Organization commended Nigeria for this measure and going as far as using Nigeria as an example of how countries should respond to the pandemic. Read https://twitter.com/drjoeabah/status/1233989553008119809?lang=en for Dr. Joe’s Twitter thread and https://guardian.ng/news/coronavirus-who-commends-fgs-effort-on-response/ for WHO’s commendation.
2. Number of cases recorded in Nigeria versus that of UK or any other “saner country”: As at the time of writing this article (01/04/2010 @12 noon Naija time), the UK has 25,150 confirmed cases and 1,789 deaths; the USA has 188,639 cases and 4,059 deaths; Iran has 47,593 cases and 3,036 deaths, Italy has 105,792 cases and 12,428 deaths while many other “saner countries” have similar gloomy numbers to show for their efforts. Nigeria on the other hand has recorded 139 cases and 2 deaths. I expect some readers to jump on the fact that Nigeria is not testing as much as the mentioned countries, but the fact remains that while that may be responsible for the low number of confirmed cases, it couldn’t have been responsible for low number of deaths. Not carrying out enough testing would not have prevented people from being struck down by the disease or people dying as a result of it.
3. Another indication that Nigeria’s govt is doing her best in containing the spread of the virus can be seen when one compares the time the country’s first case was discovered to when those of the “saner countries” were discovered and juxtapose with the number of confirmed cases and deaths. Italy had her first case around January 31st, 2020 (two months ago), Spain had its first on Feb. 1st and Italy had it on Feb 21st which was only four days earlier than when Nigeria had hers on Feb 25th. Compare the number of deaths/confirmed cases of these countries and see if you have not been unreasonable in your criticism of the government.
The problem with wailers and destructive critics is that they always shift the goalposts. As such, you can never have any reasonable conversation with them. When the first case was reported in Nigeria, lead by their frustrated Wailer-in-Chief, they said it was a scam to be used to loot money. And when few more cases were confirmed some days after, they turned back to say the govt should have closed the bother long ago! Such is their pathetic life!
Ask them which country Nigeria should have emulated in containing the disease, those of them who still have a bit of sense will stutter because they would not dare say USA, UK, Italy or Germany but the chronic wailers who have obviously lost it all will still compare how Nigeria is managing the spread of the disease to the same UK which has lost almost two thousands of her people to the disease.
Does Nigeria have the facilities or the means to combat the COVID19 pandemic? The answer is a resounding NO. Does the country have a robust health system compared to those “saner countries”? Again, the answer is an emphatic No? Do we have enough money to deploy to tackle any outbreak in the size of that witnessed in UK, Italy, USA or Germany? The answer is an obvious NO. But the fact is that the state of our health system or the size of our purse wasn’t brought about by the current government but a result of many years of failure. So, why wailing uncontrollably instead of supporting the govt’s efforts at preventing the spread of the disease?
Had it been Buhari who reacted the way Trump and Boris Johnson first reacted to the COVID19 outbreak – by dismissing it and making all sorts of joke of it, or just like Seyi Makinde (your “presidential material”) who called it an APC disease, perhaps you would have possibly drank sniper to such response. There should be a limit to wailing!
Have a nice day. Bros, If you don't test, 1. You won't know the number of symptomatic and asymptomatic cases (total number of cases) 2. You won't would know the cause of death, especially for pneumonia related deaths Finally, asking people coming in from infected countries to self isolate is simply government shirking it's responsibility. Government should have quarantine them with it's resource at the port of entry. Not doing this enabled the virus to gain ground. Even the government itself actively help spread the disease. Argue with Kyari and Makinde about this. The FG wasted so much time, and its action was not decisive. Apart from the speech that was beat out of the reluctant president, there is no FG command and control function in the response so far. Perhaps because Abba Kyari (the defacto president) has been incapacitate by the virus' calculated attack. |

During the controversy States responses were that they would not award lands to FG for ruga. What about lands previously awarded, were they going to revoke them? Thats an issue.
This parcel of land falls into that category and fg is not backing away from its plan to build settlements on it. As you can see its planning has already been awarded.
The contention here is that Anambra, having realized its past error is remorseful and would like to kick fg out of the land, but has no legal foot to do so. It thus employed brute steps to convert ownership to itself by erecting structures on the land; a clear violation, and a trespass! "she became the spearhead of a health education programme" Similar: leader(s) driving force forefront avant-garde front runner(s) front line vanguard van cutting edge verb lead (an attack or movement). "he's spearheading a campaign to reduce the number of accidents at work" That doesn't sound anything like advisory. It's either they are being primed to be foot soldiers (tip of the spear), or leaders (strategic leadership). Either way, younger people will do a better job.
