Na lie. That was about what we were consuming before subsidy removal. They are just looking for holes to hide their over invoicing and inflated import contracts for ghost gasoline knowing that the books will soon be opened. |
Creepy.... ![]() |
PlayMaker14:You people joke too much. This is not the time and this is not the way to save this nation or move it forward. You and I are the custodians of this country and owe it service either in government or in citizenship and if all we offer is propaganda how are we crafting the nation we live in. Let us have a forum where citizens banter on ideologies, discuss and debate facts and offer qualitative ideas whether they are pro or against the interests of government. |
We are tired of saying this. The government is just indolent when it comes to issues of fighting inflation which is their responsibility because their decisions (right or wrong) triggered it. And every government in decent nations round the world constantly fight inflation. What is this government doing to ensure the economy does not spiral out of control. It started with energy and currency, it has reached healthcare. By the time it envelopes the entire economy we will have made a full circle back to devaluation again and a vicious cycle. |
2mch:I used to think this way but honestly Nigeria and her citizens are just not it. The first priority will be to get it going, established and fit for the purpose of earning this country a steady stream of foreign exchange to help balance our books. That should be our priority, the only priority now. And if that means 100% owned and operated by foreigners I am good with that. Providing jobs and tech transfer comes a distant second. Just look at what we have done with our industries including all those Obasanjo seized from multinationals starting in the 70's and where they are today. The answer to that poser is simple. Let foreigners run this one and then incentify the next Dangote to prospect in another for the purpose of satisfying all other ideals. Afterall we have so called trained operators to manage the refineries and yet they are moribund caused by indigenous management that did not build them with their sweat. That is the difference. |
Tradepunter2:Totally agree. One of the incorruptible development partners. |
Fantastic development. Good one in the right direction of investment in export targeted industries. |
Angelfrost:Even the basic things of administration they cannot get right. Why employ when you know you cannot pay. Is that not fraud in officialdom. Yet they can appropriate billions for their pensions for doing what amounts to part time work in other climes. And some joker will yak that a government that serially embarrasses us before the world is doing well. |
It appears the only folks satisfactorily catered for in this country are politicians, all others are just badly treated. Shameful, shambolic country. |
Confirmedzombie:We saw him inspecting it with officials of Julius Berger before inauguration several weeks ago. They are probably working on engineering solution to is complex drainage challenges. It may take a while to take-off. |
Dshocker:What can I say. If he was in the UK or US custody the case will have been dealt with ages ago and he will most likely be incarcerated by now. Another reason why such people should not be bailed is that their prior positions are influential enough to influence not just investigations but the judicial process as a whole not to talk of the safety of key witnesses. When law enforcement officers anywhere in the world cross their fealty to the State, their esteemed institutions and the Trust of the public they are never treated with any bias whatsoever or given any quarter. Unfortunately our institutions are just too weak to secure and develop this country. |
9jatriot:Edo State has a much more low lying topography thus water runoffs are less erosive. The gradient off the Niger River going eastwards and northwards is much more acute. |
9jatriot:The topography and geology, simple. The lack of rocky materials particularly in elevated formations. It happens. |
Another racism post masquerading as intellectual. No time for nonsense. |
Told you folks where this 'world record' madness was headed. Silly people will call one a hater. Since reading my first edition off my dad's library in the early 80's I've learnt of the good, the bad and the ugliness quests for the world record had brought to people and their communities. Yes, the fame (or infamy), but it has cost a lot too, from lives to limbs. And that is why the 'World Record' organistation has often expressed reservations and has a strong caveat because 'quests' are contagious and can often descend into chaos and tragedy. And I know that since the summary of the whole world of records is a book, Nigerians are bound not to see the whole picture, know the history and so avoid the dear pitfalls because we are a society built largely on ignorance. |
Akinfemmy:What the man is saying is pure science and is true. Lagos Island has no viable long term future due to ocean rise. The cost of protecting the entire island and peninsula from ocean surge will become too high for the taxpayer such that people will rather relocate. Already sold almost all my holdings there over the past five years and it will all be gone if not the slow down in the economy. I can only speculate on property there now in the most cautious of manners. |
murtalaa:Really?. That is worrying. Why? This is July. |
AjaoEstater:Rainy season, our own winter, is my best time of the year. I can't stand the heat global warming has brought on the earth. |
The club fits him and I have this sneaky feeling he may as well go on to be a legend there. He's too English to fail and United is the most British of all the Prem teams to have won multiple titles. |
Hmmm..... everyone is busy withdrawing subsidies.... ![]() |
lordimmaogidi:Of course we caused it. Living beyond our means for decades. And by means I mean everything from economics to politics. |
Johans2023:This is wrong. The United Kingdom is an oil and gas producing country though production has been steadily declining since the peaks of the 80's. But as a top 10 economy it consumes all that it extracts and requires North Sea oil from Scandinavia to meet the huge deficit. If Nigeria could raise its levels of industrialization, grow its economy and prosper its citizens we will become a net importer of energy products just like Indonesia did and left OPEC as a result. There is no pride in continuing to export primary resources. It smacks of under development. I was telling someone the other day to his surprise that the United States is the largest oil producer in the world yet it imports oil. |
worksmart:This is exactly what I was saying yesterday about the opaque nature of government in Nigeria. No one knows anything about what they do and why they do what they do. Democracy in other climes is more collaborative like a chauffeur and the boss. Both know where they are going and need each other to get there. Here it the vehicle is a school bus filled with noisy kids supposedly on their way to kindergarten. They are not interested in how they get there and the driver owes them no reasoning. Everyone just assumes it will work out everyday. I really think we need to elevate the level of our citizenship particularly when it comes to governance to realize the true merits of democracy. It is alarming that after failing to properly supervise the out going government and paying such a hefty price we are comfortable with rolling the dice and going to sleep again. Elections is NOT the A to Z of democracy. |
AfonjaConehead:See what I was saying. An admission that the Legislature in Nigeria is just a parastatal of government responsible for approvals instead of it's proper function of supervising government. And if there is no distinction between the supervisor and the executor who do you blame for a collapsed building. |
Tzar:Has it been independent of Mr. President the past eight years.... And who influenced the present one... If Great Britain was influencing the elections here and our candidates were in cahoots with No. 10 Downing Street will you have called Nigeria an independent nation. |
Beverages:You should not be eating at this time. It's too late in the day. |
nairalanda1:And I am telling you this and you can bookmark it. Without cleaning up its act you can tax the Nigerian citizen 100 percent of his paltry, shameful income (N30,000 or 40 dollars per month or $1.33 cents a day or 17 cents per hour..... minimum wage which is just disgusting), it will still not shift the developmental needle one bit if Nigeria continues with its lack of transparency, ridiculous budget templates and villainous theft in execution. The Nigerian government can collect all the money on earth, as long as it does not reform itself Nigeria will develop as fast as a drum can be filled by fetching water with a wicker basket. All you will be hearing is the billions and trillions this Minister and that DG and that Perm Sec has stolen, never to be recovered. All you will be hearing is this Contractor and that Consultant who could not afford three square meals prior is now on the Forbes Rich List. This has been our unending experiences since the British left and until Mr. Buhari followed to London and all the antecedents left with us today in the name of government are exactly alike and have started on the same wasteful and corrupt note. I refuse to be blackmailed by a government completely lacking the moral right to ask for more. So they are free to use coercion. |
nairalanda1:You don't seem to get it. The Nigerian citizen has no more income to be taxed. The Nigerian citizen is presently being over leveraged for the failure of governance and should resist any more subsidy for bad governance. And here you are bandying figures of whatever.... We have accepted that fuel subsidy should go because the government cannot secure our borders to prevent gasoline going to our neighbors while the State pays a huge amount to finance the Customs Service. We have accepted that fuel subsidy should go because government cannot clean up its books with persistent over invoicing and subsidy theft and has not brought a single person to book despite losing trillions to graft. We have accepted that naira subsidies have to go because government through its agency, the CBN cannot keep its filthy hands off pilfering our dollar income and washing it at massive losses through villainous third parties for a profit popularly called round tripping. We the citizens are paying for lack of good corporate governance, lack of political will, lack of functional institutions, lack of security and a dysfunctional criminal justice system deterrent. I repeat again. Exactly what is the SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION OF GOVERNMENT in Nigeria. What are they doing well to further this country when the citizens are PAYING FOR EVERYTHING directly as you want from taxes or indirectly as we have accepted to scrape out a living without subsidies. Oga, WHAT IS GOVERNMENT DOING FOR NIGERIA in the real sense of it. The removal of subsidies IS TAXATION. For the countries you are apt to compare all have effective social programs which in truth are indirect tax breaks. Government takes from the richer to aid the poorer. Here government takes from everyone and gives nothing. In fact they are even giving us their jobs, their responsibilities on top. Haba. |
nairalanda1:And I also respectfully disagree with you with the facts that, Until Nigeria operates the FOI Act without equivocation to thoroughly x-ray public finances from income to expenditure in the most transparent and accountable manner. Until the preparation and execution of the Federal Budget is made to tally with the true position of our income and expenditure addresses our express developmental needs and NO MORE, Until the overbloated, inefficient government apparatus is constituted with the efficiency of the private sector and the cost of administering this country is fixed at a set percentage of our income and NO MORE, such that lavish and ostentatious living amongst top civil servants and politicians is ground to a halt..... Then I will never accept that Nigeria does not have enough money. For we can all pretend and join government to live a lie. Leadership is not more important than the citizens, period. They say Nigeria is broke and Nigerians should live an austere life but not them. 4 trillion will be saved over the next 12 months. That is enough to make a substantial difference in the finances of Nigeria and enough to kick start any developmental program. They don't need to draw more blood from the fainting citizens in the form of taxes. Let us see what will be done with the trillions saved first. I have never seen a developing or aspiring country where government is many times larger than the rest of the country. Here government commandeers every single resource out of the ground, out of the air and out of the minds of the citizens yet is relinquishing almost every corporate responsibility is has. Where is all the money going. |
lexy2014:Ask them..... about what is left, after the former Accountant General helped himself to 30 billion and till today no one knows where he is and what has become of the case. A country where budgets are made without citizen input to deliver projects they don't need or will not benefit from and at costs that are out of this world.... Give them 101% Tax to GDP ratio and Nigeria will not change one bit just as dipping a basket in the ocean will not retain a teaspoon of water. The structure of the Nigerian state is not geared towards progress. |
Primitive people. Simple application of technology will have prevented this barbaric drama. |
