That is the way to go, difuse tension by negotiation not propaganda, intimidation and violence. I commend all those involved in calming the situation and call on both sides to meet and sort out issues around the table. Both the aggreived and the authorities must be willing to give and take in the spirit of peace and mutual understanding. This is commendable and a marked progress from the dark days pre-Yaradua, another dividend of the empowerment of the minorities by the acsension of the Jonathan government. There is finally someone who can represent them and who understands BOTH sides of the argument. Yes, Jonathan has seen the limitations of the State and is best placed to intervene. That is why it is important to empower all parts of the country particularly the minorities to create a proper sense of belonging in this national project. It can only strengthen the union. |
mikolo80:Where the Legislature awards contracts. Which drama is that, 'Aso Rock Down'? |
To be a good president Buhari must strive to build the institutions to handle his policy directions, institutions that will last when he is gone. He should let them work and be totally distanced from them. To build institutions you must first build trust, something I don't think this President has. Nigeria doesn't need strong men, but strong institutions. If Nigeria is a corrupt society people will just wait for him to leave power and return to the status quo or worse. Those who cannot wait will battle to undermine him and woe to a man if he stands alone. I want to see and hear more about the law, law enforcement and the Judiciary than of Buhari playing the parts. |
mikolo80:How will I respond to this....I just don't know. Haba. |
trukoments:So he can't appoint ministers because of the potential dirt the PDP will dig up, ha. This is serious. Can you guys see how you have roped yourself in by setting a standard you cannot possibly live by. Get set for turbulence ahead. Your fears are coming. |
londoner:'Good move but what will the process be...' 'Good move but what wiill...' 'Good....but....' This is the summary of the government at hand and its supporters/promoters, high on rhetoric, short on ideas. They dismantle this and that but rebuild none. If it is such a good and fantastic policy move, why the 'ifs' and 'buts'. Buhari is fast becoming paranoid of all those around him. If he cannot trust anyone to form government, cannot find the tomatoes to make tomato paste he might as well go hungry. This thing is not working. |
Fourwinds:Oga. It is happening right now as we speak. Look, corruption is hard-wired in our DNA. I cannot tell you what I hear every other day. Though I commend Buhari's effort and proposals but I'm afraid at this rate very little will be accomplished by the end of his tenure. No contractors are working at present, infrastructure is decaying left, right, centre. These are the tangible indices by which the administration will be judged. |
lolaxavier:So who or what will award the contracts to clean the streets, supply stores to the military and build infrastructure, a super computer, an angel of God or the United Nations. Is it not a man heading one institution or the other that will take charge and will such a person or group of persons not be subject to corruptive pressures. If Buhari does not trust anyone around him he is bound to fail in governance either through inactivity (which we are seeing) or gang up (which is slowly manifesting within his ranks). He cannot have it both ways. The economy will not prosper by blocking holes alone. It has to be filled with water as well. |
Christianity is not a religion but a faith. You donot understand to believe - religion, you believe to understand. That is the difficulty in its apparent simplicity. That is why it appears 'hidden' to men of reason. You cannot 'reason' out things of God. We had lost that understanding ability to Satan in the garden of Eden. To get it back you have to be inhuman, believing what you cannot see. |
azimibraun:How did Jonathan politicize the insurgency. |
dragon2:Keep kidding yourself. Federal Republic indeed where states cannot sweep their streets and pay teachers without centralized disbursement of resources. Is it not a proper federation that well meaning Nigerians have been fighting for but the establishment, the mafia, the born to rule hegemony resists vehemently. If you don't know who you are others do and will not hesitate to tell you. |
The best days of the APC are long gone. Once again its all downhill from May 29th. |
When you have power you don't need anything else. Accentuation is the sign of need. |
OrlandoOwoh:Respond to issues not people. That is the foundation of development. Ignore them and watch the gradual corrosion of institutions. We have been down this road before and you have worked examples in the failures of the PDP, the same line a lot of you folks are towing. |
Not only that but call them up and offer to send a representative to attend. Nigeria must constantly put its foot forward, offer peace and cease being behind the curve and reactionary. Every opportunity to difuse and de-escalate smouldering magazines no matter where they are found whether in the north east or south south should be exploited. We have wasted countless lives and resources on conflicts that started at best as mere agitation and at worst as criminality. We must develop ideas and conflict resolution mechanisms to handle all agitating groups no matter what issues they raise and ideologies they profess. The Nigerian State must always be prepared to negotiate its existence. It is not a destination, but a journey. |
ypzilanti:It is because you call it tribalism that it sounds Nigerian. Call it what it is, racism, pure and simple. Is it when national borders are re-drawn we know that tribalism equates to racism. |
No Nigerian should comment on this thread. We are worse racists. |
kilode100:Thought I was the only one who noticed. Press men and pancake. |
The biggest chance to solve the Niger Delta question lay in the Jonathan administration. It was an administration borne out of affirmative action towards the minorities but along the line we chose ourselves instead. Tompolo should have been left to face Jonathan alone so that power, ultimate political/governmental power is demystified. Now they have excuses and the present government is not helping matters. Nigeria just doesn't want to make the sacrifices it takes to establish itself. |
deathmen12:There cannot be peace without justice. Nigeria should negotiate with its constituents. There was a national conference, a not perfect discourse but all the same a good step forward. What is the government doing about it...... You can't force a people together. People relate by will not be force. That is how progressive nations are built. |
oz4real83:So you are okay with the status quo. Well you can't impose your ideals and desires on others all the time. Life is about give and take. If you are not willing to give, it will be taken. |
free2ryhme:You need to understand this country. Being a realist and facing the problems we have will save you a lot of heartache. Typically we know how a pretty picture looks like but we don't know how to paint. What is your solution to the Nigerian question beyond the status quo which is not universally accepted. |
calcal:That is where he should have started. Russia makes decent weaponry, we already have army, airforce and naval stocks from them so integration will not be a problem, they are not as expensive as western gear, Russia needs all the cash it can get due to sanctions and most importantly, they will notq interfere in our internal affairs. They will not dictate to us how to use them. Buy America and in five years when you need spares and some crazy dude like Donald Trump occupies the white house then what do you do. |
prettyboi1989:Forget that. Nigeria will NEVER allow a foreign national army operate on its territory. Take that from me. Any government attempting to do that is courting insurrection. That is the armed forces I know. It took ages for the South African mercenaries scheme to be accepted and only after the military insisted it must remain clandestine and regarded as training and logistics only. |
hinwazaka:Obama loooves Nigeria so much that he has avoided the country like a plague since becoming President because democracy in Kenya, Ghana, Senegal and South Africa are light years ahead of Nigeria's. Continue playing the ostrich. Look its rainy season. You will get mud in your wig. |
How many times have I said that America is not our friend and we should be looking east. Just wasted time, money and goodwill visiting that nonsense country. Since our independence what has America helped us to accomplish. Leahy law my butt. Yet they sell arms to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Israel whose human rights records are 'fantastic' and are bastions of democracy and free speech. Just fed up. |
skullbaba:So tribe is alive and well. Tomorrow the same you, yes you will come here and say, under this new government we are seeing competence replacing sentiments. I think we are just..... wasting our time. Without restructuring this country, nothing will ever change. You can change government all you like, you cannot change the Nigerian mentality and psyche, which drives everything and is the reason why we are the way we are. I don't expect Buhari to do otherwise because I have not deceived myself. It is not his fault and it is normal. Nigeria makes you sectional by default. |
Holimykel:You simply cannot do that. He (Buhari) knows, I know and most right thinking people know, that it amounts to suicide, pure and simple. It is a zero sum game. If the law is the law, you cannot have a government in Nigeria. It is not where to start. By 2019 you will see clearly what Nigeria's problem is. I think Buhari is the last chance at national redemption, abi. |
Sunnymatey:Okay, so you can see that there is something more important than corruption, more sinister than corruption and MUST be tackled FIRST if we are ever to escape the shackles of corruption. Where are those who were boasting that Buhari could eradicate corruption. It is time for you to come out now and hold him for his words. We are watching because he will be setting a template for the future, a future we should not complain about when he is gone because he will not be there forever. If he is setting a statute of limitation, fine, then he should put it into law. That is the way to go. |
Omotolu:Then your country cannot develop, pure and simple, but I'm sure the critical thought is lost on you since you donot know what development is due to years of living in desperate delusion and druggery. All countries moving forward are bending over backwards to accomodate their constituents. They see the strength of their countries as represented by the weakest members and reach out to include them. You talk of security, you talk of economy, how do you progress without inclusion. How do you take on the world with a fractured implement. Just wasting your time. |
ephemm:'.....but I fear the Igbo man (President) will be impeached easily...' My friend you are still gripped by fear and schakled by tribalism. And yet you desire an advanced country framed by the rule of law, and laid in peace and prosperity. Those countries you admire have departed from sectionalism. Buhari met a black Amercan president (you are all excited about), the other day you saw British MP's of Nigerian heritage (including the Igbos you assert are unelectable). I'm just sorry for the terrible state you have found yourself, striving, groaning and grumbling about all that is wrong with your country when it is clear to you in the mirror. It is a pity that you simply cannot see that this country cannot work without the strength of its constituents acting in unism. The Confed flag has been flying over government buildings in some southern states of the US since the civil war. No one had been arrested for that. Texas has openly agitated these past years for succession from the US, no one has been arrested and no one will question the patriotism or capability of a Texan or a candidate from South Carolina standimg for the office of the President of the USA. What they look at is the 'State of the Union'. The US acts fairly to all, Nigeria does not act fairly to all. The Confed flag came down by election by the representatives of the people of that state, by popular will, not by coercion, threats and mistreatment. Nigeria on the other hand wants its constituents to fall in line by force, no matter how it treats its minorities and the people of the east and then it turns round to complain that they do not cooperate to build the nation. You puncture holes in your bucket and compain its never full. You are wise, not so. |
I think this is better, if not the government will get bogged down and risk indicting itself. |
