Symphony007: To an extent, this is true. Nigeria has a fast growning middle class. There is a rise in car sales. People are more willing to spend money on luxeries like entertainment in places like silverbird, genesis delux, shoprite and many other. Nigeri has a growning middle class but that does'nt mean we there yet. We still have a monumental problem with poverty.

I still do not understand why a central bank governor should be this active and vocal about sectors that really don't have any bearing on the financial sector. Wouldn't it be very strange to hear the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK making comments or giving a speech discussing gay rights or the right of terminally ill patients to opt for medically assisted suicide. It is becoming embarrassing.

I like the guy and all, but Mr. Sanusi needs to give it a break abeg!

Saw the movie yesterday and I must confess it's one of the best Tarantino movie I have ever seen. I do not understand what the whole controversy was about the racial nature of the movie. I mean, this was a movie about the era of slave trade and everything that was depicted in the movie really happened to slaves in those days.

They were neutered at will, fed to dogs, made to wrestle bears and one another in blood sports for the entertainment of their white masters and YES! They were called NIGGERS and required to respond with a "Yessa Massa" when so called. There were also "Uncle Toms" like the character played so well by Samuel L. Jackson who sold their own out to the white slave owners.

All these were themes explored in the movie. From where then comes the angst expressed by Spike Lee and several other notable black icons about this movie?

For a man holding one of his babies in his arms and hoping to convince Nigerians that he is hale and hearty, his excellency does look a bit morose.

That blank expression on his face and the way his eyes stare into space speaks of a man in a state of oblivion.

This picture was an epic fail and should not have been released.

I wish him full recovery in Jesus name.

Nonsense
I see that I touched a raw nerve there didn't I? Did I suddenly help you see clearly the precarious situation that your president is in? I guess sitting over and mismanaging the commonwealth of 160 million+ Nigerians has a way of giving one a larger than life image of ones' self and making one forget how fragile we really are. May God show your president mercy and give him the grace to live out his days as president.

All rants and insult without yield is a sheer waste of time....You all have 2 more years of unyielding screams to go

Indulge in it brethrensgrin
Be careful what you wish for. Lest your case be like the rich fool in the Bible or the foolish bird in Achebe's Things fall Apart who ate and drank so much that he foolishly challenged his Chi to a wrestling match. It has been said that the voice of the people is the voice of God. History is replete with leaders who fell out of favour with the people and thus fell out of favour with God. The people chose Saul to be king over them and God anointed him. When he misbehaved, the same people cried out to God and he lost the throne.

In this age we are in where Choppers and planes are falling from the skies and politicians are falling accident victims of the dangerous roads they fail to repair; an age where governors are catching erstwhile "poorman" diseases and returning from foreign hospitals in boxes, do you not think that you should be more circumspect in your statement and pray that your president continue to enjoy the goodwill of the people who elected him?

Or do you think that the chicanery of some of you who continue to praise his mediocrity to high heavens and can find no wrong in him will be able to sustain him for 2 more years if the majority turn against him even if it is just by slipping into nonchalance and indifference as is already happening?

Think again....and be very afraid...

I do agree that the Governor should have been more circumspect in his speech at ground zero. Politics › Re: Public Power Supply Continues To Improve by Reptyle(m): 4:06pm On Dec 28, 2012
Sincere 9gerian: Where I reside, as I write this text, we've had 48hrs constant public power supply, no blink. Before this time we been having 18 to 20hrs daily average power supply.
Only recently, the power ministry officials and the transmission company of Nig confirmed the country attained a new power generation peak of about 4,500MW.
This is not eldorado but are definitely positive signs that the reforms in the power sector are yielding fruit.
We expect that 2013 will definitely be better as the new private owners of the PHCN successor companies take over.
Pls can we first state where we live before stating nebulous stats about power availability? We are not asking for your address or anything close, just a general description of the area so that we can all know whether this internationally celebrated "4500mw" is been supplied to a specific segment of society. Perhaps you need to be a rabid supporter of the government of the day to get a share of the megawatts. I will start:

Satellite Town, Oriade LCDA, Lagos: We last spotted electric power in the satellite town area when we got about an hour of uninterrupted supply on the 24th of December. Since then, not even a blink. cry

helpmeohgod: Why Do Nigerians Celebrate Whenever A Leader Dies, Starting From Abacha Era?

Pls can someone explain the cause of jubilation in Nigeria whenever a leader dies? It was on record that when former president Murtala Muhammed died in the 60's it mourning and sadness to the extent that Dimka the coup plotter killer was aprehended, and killed. But that was the last Nigerians will ever mourn the death of a leader genuinely.
When president Abacha died, majority was seen in the street drinking and dancing, and now with the death of Yakowa and Azazi, even in these site people are making funj of their death.
In Ghana, the former president's death brought tears. To Ghananians and even to Nigerians, and in America, a citizen's death is a calamity not to talk of the president's death.
Someone please explain the reason behind this Nigerian attitude
I guess we only reciprocate the quantum of value THEY place on OUR lives. We can only give as much love as we get.
Politics › Re: Lagos-Kano Mass Transit & Fuel-Haulage Trains Begins Friday by Reptyle(m): 12:43pm On Dec 20, 2012
Sincere 9gerian: When GEJ promises, he delivers:

Rasheed Bisiriyu

Fuel distribution is expected to improve as from next week when the Nigerian Railway Corporation resumes haulage of petroleum products from Lagos to the North.
The corporation has also announced that it will commence the operation of Lagos-Kano mass transit trains on Friday.
A statement by the corporation on Wednesday said its haulage of petroleum products would also start on Friday “with the newly acquired pressurised light-oil tank wagons.”
The Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, will inaugurate the two trains and is expected to ride with the Kano-bound passengers on the new mass transit train.
The corporation had early in the year acquired 20 pressurised tank wagons costing N600m as it prepared to go into the movement of petroleum products across the country.
According to the minister, the 20 wagons have the capacity to lift 900,000 litres of petroleum products, the equivalent of 27 road tankers.
By implication, Umar said once NRC commenced fuel haulage; it would remove the heavy burden on Nigerian roads.
“The pressurised tank wagons have safety protection measures and systems that give confidence and assurance that the products are secure and intact,” the statement added.
It also said that oil marketers and other domestic users would benefit from the bulk distribution of petroleum products by train.
The NRC said the Lagos-Kano mass transit train would leave Ebute Meta on Friday morning and arrive at the Kano station on Saturday morning.
It said, “The train will depart Lagos by 9am and will stop at major stations such as Abeokuta,Ibadan, Osogbo, Ilorin, Minna and Kaduna before it finally arrives its Kano terminal destination on Saturday morning.”

@ Sincere 9gerian

This is good news.

Infact as soon as I read your post, I called up a few of my friends in the media who had not heard about this upcoming event and we all agreed that this epoch-making event of trains leaving Lagos and terminating in Kano after making stops along the way MUST receive all the fanfare it deserves.

We need to tell all nay sayers on this forum and our enemies in the west that GEJ's government is finally putting Nigeria back on track. (pun intended)

Please tell us which of the stations these trains will be taking off from so that me and my friends in the media can give the event the elaborate coverage it deserves.

We would also like to know if tickets will be on sale at the terminal because we tried to make reservations on the NRC website with no success. We looked for a number to call on the site but found none.

Please ignore all these "nay sayers" who don't believe that anything good can come out of this government and use your good office to help us with these pieces information urgently.

If you can supply this pieces of information, me and my friends will upload pictures and videos of the grand event on this thread tomorrow...if the world doesn't end grin
Politics › Re: Power Generation Peaks At 4,350MW by Reptyle(m): 11:52am On Dec 19, 2012
Satellite Town, Lagos is apparently not receiving any part of these megawatts. The light situation here is simply shameful and coupled with the hot weather, is enough to drive anyone nuts.

There was an obvious improvement under Barth Nnaji with an average of between 8 and 10 hours of power everyday. Since he left, we barely have 1 hour of power everyday...yet this government keeps mentioning and celebrating new power generation thresholds almost on a monthly basis. Something just does not add up.

Abeg Princess should stop making a fuss about this issue.

Churches (even the orthodox ones) have and enforce very strict sitting arrangements. Whatever reasons they give should be their call. If you cannot comply, try the church next door.

I wonder what she would have done if she stepped into an Anglican or Catholic church and was out-rightly refused entry because she had her hair uncovered or her dress was too short...or even because she was wearing trousers. Would she have tweeted at the Pope?

Populist actions like this one are good...but has the Governor thought about the sustainability of this wonderful move? Or is he just interested in stirring up sentiments in the minds of the good people of Imo State just enough to guarantee him re-election in 2015?

Even if he gets re-elected and somehow manages to sustain this action throughout his tenure, without a clear strategy and a legally established backing for funding this wonderful project, Rochas might just be going to create issues for the next Governor who might not quite share his populist ideals.

This guy matched into the Government house with his tribes men and started accusing the governor without any hard evidence,

what he did is not really bad for the average person, but for a national leader who hope to be accepted by all, I think its shamefull...

Imagin someone of Obamas status storming into the floridas governors office to directly accuse the governor of hating blacks...because of the newly introduced election policies, wouldn't that diminish his status in your eyes?

There is a reason why Boko-Haram choose him as their spokes person, there is a reason why he has never been vocal against the boko boys, or used his popularity in the north to move sympathy against boko boys...

I lost a very very dear friend in the 2005 Belview plane crash. She was one of the air hostesses. I still have her number on my contact list and I do not plan to delete it. I feel like once I do that, I have disconnected the last link I still have with her. Perhaps because there was no body to bury, I never quite got the closure I needed. Once in a while, I still find myself dialling the number, somehow hoping that she will answer the call. All I hear is that the number doesn't exist on the network any more. I'd probably keep that number for life.
