jonhemma11: Former governor of Abia State Orji Uzor Kalu was arraigned today over a number of charges bordering on corruption at the Federal High Court by EFCC.
The ex-governor is alleged to have, amongst other offences, while he was the Governor of Abia State in 2003, procured Slok Nigeria Limited to retain its account domiciled with a commercial bank in the sum of 200 million Naira and that the sum formed part of the funds illegally derived from the treasury of Abia State government through another commercial bank.
However, his trial was stalled by Justice Anuli Chickere who said she could not go on with the case when an aspect of the matter was still pending at the Supreme Court. Justice Chikere adjourned the case to June 30.
One of the parties charged in the case, Slok Airlines, which also belongs to Mr Kalu, has an appeal pending at the apex court.
During proceedings, counsel to Slok Nigeria Limited, Mr Solomon Akuma, drew the attention of the court to the pending appeal by his client, Slok Nigeria Limited, before the Supreme Court which had not been heard.
Mr Kalu’s trial is coming more than eight years after he was first arraigned for misappropriation of state’s funds.
It should be recalled that Supreme Court on March 18 gave the EFCC a ‘go-ahead’ to prosecute the former Governor.
The charge predicated on alleged complicity of the former Governor in money laundering and illegal diversion of public funds of about 5.6 billion Naira.
Mr Kalu was alleged to have perpetuated the fraud between 1999 and 2007 while he was the Governor of Abia State.

Abia State is still struggling to reel out of the curse left behind by this man's administration as governor for 8 years. A man who converted Aba into a refuse dumping ground and Abia state into a personal enterprise for his mother is here to inform us about corrupt governors. Governor Ikpeazu has achieved in less than 12 months what Orji Uzor Kalu could not achieve in Abia State in 8 years. And he is here to tell us about corrupt governors. In a sane society, he would be in jail cooling off. In Nigeria, he is a chief itching to rear his ugly head back into politics. |
Politics › Re: Former Governor Dr.orji Uzor Kalu Backs Buhari On Subsidy Removal by Rhea: 4:45pm On May 13, 2016 |
A former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has accused current set of Nigerian governors of squandering their states’ funds on personal luxury, saying it was the main reason why they cannot pay workers salaries in their respective states.
Speaking against the backdrop of the recent demand for more funds by the governors to meet up with their statutory obligations, Kalu said that the demand was unnecessary, revealing that the States already have sufficient funds to function optimally.
He hinted that the governors have the penchant of drawing a whooping sum of N35 million as traveling allowance, saying that unless they stopped tampering with security vote for personal use, the states wouldn’t see development.
Kalu who spoke to State House Correspondents after a private meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinabjo at the presidential villa, Abuja on Friday, however, gave exceptions of some governors whom he said were fixing their states.
He said: “I think most of these governors are doing very well and some of them also are living in the euphoria of the office. You can see most of them who are very active, I don’t need to count them for you.
“The issue of crying for fund, honestly, in my opinion, these governors have enough fund to work for their people because if you check, the money drawn as security vote is excessive. They should stop that.
“Unless they stop drawing on security vote they will not have enough fund to work with and most of them are living in absolute luxury, which is not their money that they worked out for. So it is impossible to continue living in this manner. Advertisement
“Most of the governors are even living in Abuja now, they don’t even live in their states, honestly. If you look at the books very well, in each trip they make, they will take traveling allowance of N35 million, which is un-heard of.
“What are you going to do with that. So, how are we going to progress. Not all the governors. I have gone through Rivers, I see that Rivers is hitting the ground running. I have gone through Adamawa and I see Adamawa is hitting the ground.
“I have gone through few more states, they are hitting the ground, they are working. I don’t speak with sentiments. I don’t speak for anybody. You can see those who are working and those who are not working. Let them sit down and do the job they are elected for.’’
The former governor also added that the private sector had a role to play in national development if the government could create an enabling environment for them.
“Well, the private sector will also need government guarantees and access to credit. We need power to be able to revamp the economy. The economy should not be lived only by crude oil.
“The economy should be seen, we can produce a lot of things and export, we can also do farming and we still can do our mineral resources and we need to diversify, that is the key.
“When people see people like us who have been governors, we made a lot of sacrifices in going to sit down there.
“Because I can make much more money than sitting down there for eight years.
“So it was a sacrifice that is worth doing for our people because education health and all the rest I have forgotten right away”, he said. |

NaijaCuzin: Lagos State Government Thursday disclosed that it procured and distributed no fewer than 115 jeeps to traditional rulers and chiefs across the state.
The state government also said 84 Streets gates shut against motorists before the 12 midnight deadline it stipulated, were demolished.
Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami disclosed this at the ministerial press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, in commemoration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode's first year in office, with the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community and Communications, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan.
Folami noted “The State has 605 approved Obas, Chiefs and Baales as at December, 2015 and inherited over 132 cases of pending approval for traditional chiefs in the state. I am happy to inform you that 56 appointments, upgrading and recognition of traditional chiefs have been approved by this Administration within a year.
“The welfare and capacity building of Obas and Chiefs in the State were given the utmost attention that it deserves. Three training and workshops were organized for them to enhance their roles as alternative dispute resolution agent within the communities, promotion of gender balance activities as well as major motivators of growth and feedback collection from the citizenry,” he added.

olokfor: A Niger Delta Militant Group, the “Nigeria Delta Avengers” has issued a statement threatening to “take it to” Lagos and Abuja after bombing Chevron platforms in Warri, Delta state.
In a statement signed by one Col. Madoch Agninibo, the group threatened to carry out other attacks on oil installations outside the Niger Delta in Abuja and Lagos.
“At about 10:40pm on Wednesday the Niger Delta Avengers blew up the Chevron valve platform. This platform is the most significant platform for chevron because it’s the main connecting point where all other platforms link up and it’s a fulcrum to chevron BOP and the Chevron Tank farm. With the valve platform blown all chevron activities are now halted.
“This is what we promised the Nigeria Government that since they refuse to listen to us we are going to zero the economy of the country.
“As for zeroing the Nigeria economy we the Niger delta avengers is done with delta state major oil installations. Now we are taking the fight out of the creeks of the Niger Delta. We are taking it to Abuja and Lagos now.
“We want to pass this message to the all international oil companies operating in the Niger Delta that the Nigeria Military cant protect your facilities. They should talk to the federal government to meet our demands else more mishaps will befall their installations.
The group want President Buhari to hold a Sovereign National Conference for Nigerians to choose whether they still want to stay together.

Car Talk › Re: The Major cause Of The Incessant Tyre Burst Accidents On Nigerian Roads by Rhea: 2:32pm On May 05, 2016 |
Tires are reinforced with very thin steel cables. If you buy a second hand tire in the Nigerian market, it is more than likely that these cables are broken or weakened by previous use. Unfortunately, most people buy tires just by looking at the thread. So when you go ahead and inflate the tire to whatever pressure, and then subject it to the pot holes that dot our roads, na wahala be that. Lesson: If you must use second hand tires, do not use subject the car to high speed (greater than 60km/hr), otherwise just buy 4 brand new tires (easier said than done in Nigeria of today) |
