I just don't understand this phrase 'milk us dry'. It's not like south African companies (Mtn, Dstv, shoprite etc) are stopping other Nigerian indeginous companies from rising. It is business and whoever knows how to do it best wins. Shikena. MTN is the biggest telecommunication company in Nigeria. Dstv is the biggest cable TV in Nigeria. Shoprite is the biggest shopping complex. All south Africans. If u ask me they bring development to us, no need to be hating. The country is big and rich enough, but our people are greedy and lack business skills. So u cannot blame south African companies for having better understanding and management skills.

That is what they all fail to understand. They could not do it, lack the capacity to sustain those that were built and handed to them, then they turn around and blame those that has made a success of it.

Everything the Nigerian man sees in developed countries, he desires but theirs must come at no cost. That is why sometimes I do not blame politician that share money and food, they just understand the psych of Nigerians.

But why is mtn own too much like for that matter? Take for instance I have done registration again and again 3 good times yet today mtn still send me message to do it again... Why is it always like that with mtn but other networks don't do that?

MTN CEO right now can't provide answer to your question. That is where the problem is. MTN collects the information and submit to NCC and NCC still return majority that it should be done again. So MTN will call such a customer back to come and do it again. They have even asked NCC to ensure this is done real time, which means, they should be unable to submit information that will be rejected so that right there the customer will know something is still wrong but that isn't the case.

So when you register and mtn says done...it is still actually technically pending, until ncc approves it.

For the other operators, their is intelligent report that mtn have done basically the same thing like others so we wonder mtn's registration is the one being bounced.

At least Nigeria is a multisiming market, what is the difference between how mtn register their sim and how Glo does hers if you are customer with both sim?

The situation MTN and her customers find themselves is unfortunate, however, they are just trying to assist a government that has not done the fundamental thing to do her duties. Which develop country do network operators register sims? All you need is a valid ID in developed countries If there is a central data base. will all these wahala be necessary if Nigeria have such?

Registration that info collected is not been referenced or readily verifiable already has a fundamental flaw even if bio-metrics were collected.

It is good to enlighten people on what they don't understand. The problem is from NCC. When customers are registered and data forwarded to NCC for them to save in their data base, they ignore it , ostensibly because they are out to sabotage MTN. After a while when these datas are not saved by NCC, they return to MTN as incomplete registration. This means that MTN will have to painfully invite the customers again for another round of registration. People don't understand what is happening here.It is not the wish of the company to see customers suffer. NCC is not happy that MTN has instituted a court case against them because of the outrageous fine imposed on MTN.They are doing everything possible to undermine the company, thereby making them lose customers. Can you be truthful for once? Ask me why on earth should NCC impose a fine of 250,000 for a sim that hitherto did not have a complete registration. Is it fair? why use a hammer to kill a musquito?

In October 2014, NCC wrote to MTN telling them to within 7 days disconnect 5.1 million lines that have incomplete data in their system. After due consideration of the situation, MTN met with NCC to discuss the issue with them.Technically, MTN cannot disconnect 5.1 million lines in 7 days. Secondly, Disconnecting these huge number of customers from the network will cause untold hardship to them, reason being that a whole lot of them use the lines for their businesses. Many use it to look for their daily bread. Moreso, MTN will lose huge amount of money by doing that.

MTN pleaded with NCC to allow them do the disconnection batch by batch so that registering them again will not overwhelm the company. NCC refused bluntly. In the course of the negotiation, 7 days elapsed. The next thing MTN saw was a letter asking them to pay a fine of 1.04 trillion. Now, that fine is about 25% of the total value of MTN. MTN saw that fine as absolutely outrageous , uncalled for and a witch hunt. Since MTN does not have such huge amount of money to pay the fine, they went to court to seek redress. Now, all parties will have to maintain the status quo untill the matter is determined by the court. Those who do not have information about what is happening should know now. I'M an insider, so i know what's happening.

Unfortunately, majority of the people you are trying to educate already have bias mind towards MTN. You knowand uderstand exactly what is going on but the average Nigerian thinks MTN is the enemy. Why will a regulator be all out to kill the market leader? That is the underlying question Nigerians should be asking.

They are angry they have registered thrice sometimes five times, however it is actually NCC that keeps rejecting these registrations by refusing to validate them on time. How is that MTNs fault? I am an insider too. Have a nice day.

How many times do I have to register my sim for MTN to have my complete bio-data and biometrics in their data base? Heaven knows I have registered my line for over six times right in their office and on each registration they would reward me with five hundred naira. I registered this same line September last year after they have blocked my line, they opened my line and sent me a successful sim registration message and gave me one thousand naira worth of air time which strangely disappeared also. Now, MTN is bombarding me with messages to go and re-register my sim. I have been using this line since 2005. For how long would I continue with this mess? I registered my glo and Etisalat sim just once and no issue since 2010 when I registered them. Is this fair?

As many times as NCC keeps returning your registration as incomplete, MTN will call you back.

MTN registers, NCC validates. What exactly do want MTN to do? get another fine?

Make we leave this people but I am glad I found a reasonable person on this forum regarding this issue. I visit nairaland every day but I just browse through the main topics on front page to keep myself abreast with developments in naija but this MTN issue pains me to the very core of my being.i am saddened that a majority of people including some of my friends I have spoken to about the issue feel MTN should pay.

We need a central data base instead of all these multiple registrations by private companies.

BP's fine is just around 5% of total value of the company. Mtn's fine is more than 80% of the total value of the company. Now do you understand why mtn's fine is unreasonable?

How much does mtn make in a day and what is their daily operational expenses? You cannot look at revenues without looking at cost of operation.

If have you an idea of the annual profit of mtn, and I can authoritatively tell u, that if mtn remains profitable for the next three years...this fine will gulp their entire profits. So is that sensible? How do u expect them to pay salaries, keep network working, expand the network, introduce new technologies etc....common people. I am not saying what I do not know,I understand the workings of international business and only come to nairaland to feel the pulse of my people. Poor people with a poverty mindset always feel it is ok to reap where they have not sown. Of fences and infractions are part of corporate existence but penalties are always commensurate with the size of the economy. Ole jati jati in government yi,what would they have done if Apple was here with profits of 53 billion dollars a year and more. Probably shut down NNPC and form a parastatal to collect money and then the National Assembly would form commitees to oversee what the parastatal is doing.

Fixing the equipment is not the issue but fixing it and keeping it undetected for a very long time while NCC was busy combing the Bush for a long time without tracing it. And also routing the signals from London to the transmitter. Presently no Nigerian engineering can do that.

Mtn never had a monopoly. Econet launched their network first and Mtel was there when mtn launched, stop trying to twist history to suit your argument. By the time mtn lauched, customers have at least 4 options to choose from (Econet, Mtel, mtn and the old 090 lines by Nitel, they are mobiles too). You are the one being biased. Apple made astronomical profits by selling Iphones and they owe no one an apology. Obviously u are baised too because u are not stating facts.

No company offers u cheap prices because they love u, superior products or services will always attract higher prices and the only way to force price down is not to demand for it but offer similar quality of products and services at lower prices.

My question is even if mtn pays this fine? What next? That's what everyone should b asking. Governors that couldn't pay salaries and got bailouts are already salivating on this urging ncc on...another revenue stream for all to share with nothing to show.

A reasonable fine based on mtns profits and financial profile should not be more that 100billion.

Did anyone not notice the flaw in the registration process. U go and provide information about who u are and there is no means to verify if it is correct. Therefore I can be Tunde on my etisalat sim and Michael on mtn network..isn't that a flaw.
