Health / Re: Coronavirus: Nigeria May Not Need Many Ventilators For Patients – Minister by Rocktation(f): 8:42pm On Mar 31, 2020 |
SmartyPants: Can you truly believe that we can have an overwhelming number of any medical equipment in our Nigeria? Truly? Are ventilators even exclusively meant for covid-19 patients? To what end is he having a principle of selectivity, for funds already devoted to the fight of the pandemic? Is it to diversify into agriculture now, or what is he suggesting they keep the money for? My problem is that I can't seem to understand whether the Nigerian government has been cursed with a knack for impugning the underlying value of preparation for the unexpected. Even nations with better measures of preparedness could not completely remove the risk of such big no-notice event from trying and sometimes overcoming the capacity of their governments, so by all means, let us fast pedal ourselves to nothingness, by not putting up a proper fight. |

You yourself, Mr. Minister, said you can never have enough ventilators, so how has your reasoning now led you to understand that you should not purchase more? It's like saying that since one can't be too careful, it becomes okay to be reckless. Why are most Nigerian leaders so stupid? People struggling for breath, will sit tight and be waiting for your stupid asses to convey ventilators from Abuja to Lagos and back, because breathlessness is moimoi for you dumbos. I hope you all continue to test positive and not be asymptomatic, to the point where you'll experience firsthand the result of your complete lack of discernment. 2 Likes |

abbey621: Okay, any attempt I might have unconsciously made to defend docs that ask for upfront would entirely be for the private clinic owners. I worked for a couple of years with a tertiary hospital and I can tell you we were constantly having problems with patients running away at nights, after receiving treatment. For emergency cases, there was something we called billing to folder and that's what's always done. This act of mercy was even extended sometimes, to regular patients. The hospital is even close to a prison, so the inmates were constantly being rushed to the hospital on alleged emergencies and we were always billing to folders. I can't speak for all the tertiary hospitals, but this one, I can tell for a fact, will likely only ask for card payment if a relative is around, but always commence treatments for accident victims, when no one around is a relative |

abbey621: Back to the matter of a faulty system. In the US, only emergency departments are legally bound to provide such services, which Nigeria cannot always do because her model of financing is mixed and different. All over the world, health bills must be picked up by one way or another, emergencies or not, through different mechanisms involving government, groups, out of pocket for individuals...if we agree that money is needed to continually procure inputs into providing health goods and services. In a system, where citizens pay taxes on a regular, which is a major source of government revenue, why would they have it any other way? |

abbey621: If only you knew the half of what goes on in the abroad, where they make us, "mere international medics" to pass their board exams before practicing, you would cower down. Nigeria did not place a monopoly on questionable ethics or fatal mistakes. In fact, we got our idea of having mortality reviews from these abroad people. And payment is done upfront too, if correct procedures are not taken to qualify for free treatment, or covered by insurance...which invariably takes us back to the little tools we have at our disposal that we must work with....we could go round and round these issues all day. The entire system just needs to work better, is all. |

I've worked very closely with Nigerian doctors -in Nigeria. And apart from the absence of state of the art medical equipments in our facilities, the most of these doctors aren't as incompetent, as a lot of Nigerians portray them to be. If anything, using the little that is at our disposal, speaks volumes of our proficiency. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Education / Re: Right Steps To Study For A Masters Degree Abroad by Rocktation(f): 1:53pm On Mar 07, 2020 |
Omoluabi9: Most UK schools do not require the GRE. GRE is mainly for schools in the US...where lots of international students prefer, cos there are lots of loopholes that you can take advantage of when it comes to staying back in the country, as against the UK. Plus, it is The US... I don't know a lot of people that would give that up for the UK. |

I think even if anyone can financially sponsor themself, they should still apply for assistantship. It is absolutely crazy, to want to spend so much money on any programme abroad when you can get them fairly easily for almost free with a good GRE and maybe TOEFL or IELTS scores. 3 Likes |
