HealthRe: Coronavirus: Nigeria May Not Need Many Ventilators For Patients – Minister by Rocktation(f):
SmartyPants:
Why ignore the part where he said only 1 patient has needed a ventilator so far? It seems evident to me that what he is saying is that we have an oversupply of ventilators considering the nature of current cases but in the worst-case scenario some ventilators can be moved from other places without strain on the system.

Now, what qualms could you have with this?
Can you truly believe that we can have an overwhelming number of any medical equipment in our Nigeria? Truly? Are ventilators even exclusively meant for covid-19 patients? To what end is he having a principle of selectivity, for funds already devoted to the fight of the pandemic? Is it to diversify into agriculture now, or what is he suggesting they keep the money for? My problem is that I can't seem to understand whether the Nigerian government has been cursed with a knack for impugning the underlying value of preparation for the unexpected. Even nations with better measures of preparedness could not completely remove the risk of such big no-notice event from trying and sometimes overcoming the capacity of their governments, so by all means, let us fast pedal ourselves to nothingness, by not putting up a proper fight.
HealthRe: Coronavirus: Nigeria May Not Need Many Ventilators For Patients – Minister by Rocktation(f):
You yourself, Mr. Minister, said you can never have enough ventilators, so how has your reasoning now led you to understand that you should not purchase more? It's like saying that since one can't be too careful, it becomes okay to be reckless.

Why are most Nigerian leaders so stupid?

People struggling for breath, will sit tight and be waiting for your stupid asses to convey ventilators from Abuja to Lagos and back, because breathlessness is moimoi for you dumbos. I hope you all continue to test positive and not be asymptomatic, to the point where you'll experience firsthand the result of your complete lack of discernment.

Yes the system is faulty and must be changed but we are talking about doctors here, doctors who signed the oath of do no harm. Let's focus on just emergencies, do they deny treatment or not? If yes then no excuse in the world justifies a person dying or seriously harmed because the doctors waited until payment was made. Excuses can be made for doctors working in clinics or even private doctors but when you work in a government hospital, you are backed by public funds. THERE'S NO DAMN EXCUSE!
Okay, any attempt I might have unconsciously made to defend docs that ask for upfront would entirely be for the private clinic owners. I worked for a couple of years with a tertiary hospital and I can tell you we were constantly having problems with patients running away at nights, after receiving treatment. For emergency cases, there was something we called billing to folder and that's what's always done. This act of mercy was even extended sometimes, to regular patients. The hospital is even close to a prison, so the inmates were constantly being rushed to the hospital on alleged emergencies and we were always billing to folders. I can't speak for all the tertiary hospitals, but this one, I can tell for a fact, will likely only ask for card payment if a relative is around, but always commence treatments for accident victims, when no one around is a relative

I've lived in the USA almost half my entire life, I not only have doctors in the family and friends but I've been privileged to work with 5 or more. The thing with abroad is that if you know what you're doing you would have no problems passing the board exam. Payment is done upfront? You mean someone with an emergency gets to fill out paperwork and payment info. before receiving treatment? I don't know which of the abroad you're referring to but most definitely is not USA or UK. The only point you made that is applicable here is that government needs to do more to ensure insurance or free treatment programs are available to those in need.
Back to the matter of a faulty system. In the US, only emergency departments are legally bound to provide such services, which Nigeria cannot always do because her model of financing is mixed and different. All over the world, health bills must be picked up by one way or another, emergencies or not, through different mechanisms involving government, groups, out of pocket for individuals...if we agree that money is needed to continually procure inputs into providing health goods and services. In a system, where citizens pay taxes on a regular, which is a major source of government revenue, why would they have it any other way?

It's not incompetence per se but unethical and downright immoral. Most will refuse to treat without payment, most will take shortcuts that could lead to serious injuries or death. This is why no matter the level of education and experience as a medical doctor in Nigeria, once you get abroad you still have to pass the board exam and some additional education/training before you are allowed to practice.
If only you knew the half of what goes on in the abroad, where they make us, "mere international medics" to pass their board exams before practicing, you would cower down. Nigeria did not place a monopoly on questionable ethics or fatal mistakes. In fact, we got our idea of having mortality reviews from these abroad people. And payment is done upfront too, if correct procedures are not taken to qualify for free treatment, or covered by insurance...which invariably takes us back to the little tools we have at our disposal that we must work with....we could go round and round these issues all day. The entire system just needs to work better, is all.
HealthRe: Coronavirus: How The Suspected Patient In Enugu ‘Died’ — Igbere TV by Rocktation(f): 4:09pm On Mar 18, 2020
I've worked very closely with Nigerian doctors -in Nigeria. And apart from the absence of state of the art medical equipments in our facilities, the most of these doctors aren't as incompetent, as a lot of Nigerians portray them to be. If anything, using the little that is at our disposal, speaks volumes of our proficiency.

Hi Rocktation, apart from the languages test, is the GRE required in UK schools?
Thanks.
Most UK schools do not require the GRE. GRE is mainly for schools in the US...where lots of international students prefer, cos there are lots of loopholes that you can take advantage of when it comes to staying back in the country, as against the UK. Plus, it is The US... I don't know a lot of people that would give that up for the UK.

I think even if anyone can financially sponsor themself, they should still apply for assistantship. It is absolutely crazy, to want to spend so much money on any programme abroad when you can get them fairly easily for almost free with a good GRE and maybe TOEFL or IELTS scores.

EventsEver Heard Of A Google Doodle? by Rocktation(mod): 3:18pm On Feb 29, 2020
If you've attempted to run a search today on google's engine, you may have noticed that the "Google" is looking different from what you knew. It's only google, doodling their logo.

Google Doodles are pictures and animations that occur on the search engine “Google” on special holidays, birthdays of famous people, and google events such as Doodle For Google and Google’s Birthday. Today's doodle though, no doubt celebrates the leap day.

Doodles were started in 1998, and continues to improve through not only motionless pictures, but also games, Ai software, moving characters, and more. These doodles commonly appear in place of a letter or two in the google word, while some make the entire word “google” bouncy, a different font, size, or color. Most update or change every day or so, while some days simply returning to the typical logo.

In addition to celebrating many well-known events and holidays, Google Doodles celebrate artists and scientists on their birthdays, including Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, Nikola Tesla, Leonardo Davinci and very recently, our very own Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, the Nigerian martyr who curbed a wider spread of the Ebola virus in Nigeria by placing the patient zero, Patrick Sawyer, in quarantine despite pressures from the Liberian government.

Interestingly, these combinations of facts and history to create over 200 doodles each year that are seen by billions of people every day, are done by only a team of five full-time google doodlers (Yes! It's a real job role).

Perhaps, you should learn to not make blanket statements that are provocative. Or be tough enough to take whatever comes from doing so. You can only control what you put out there... You cannot control how people react to it.
