Science/Technology / Re: Why Do Countries Have Different Time Zones? by Salym(m): 5:51pm On Dec 27, 2020
Priapus69:
The Earth is a sphere that rotates around its axis while the sun is stagnant. Since the earth is a sphere, sunlight cannot reach every side at the same time, so which ever side faces the sun, that part automatically gets daylight (sunlight).
Since the earth is spherical, it has 360 degrees. Divide 360 by 24(hours) it equals 15 degrees. If you chose a point latitude 0, longitude 0 you arrive at a point lets call it meridian. The countries that are on the line fall under GMT +0
Every country that is 15 degrees off the meridian becomes GMT +1, and so on until you get all 24 time zones. The GMT +1, +2 etc indicate how much time should be added to GMT +0 .
More clarification. Longitudes are imaginary lines running from North Pole to South pole. GMT, which is one of the imaginary lines of Longitude and assigned a zero value or starting point, passes through London in Europe and Ghana in Africa thereby dividing the world into two: East and West. Any country to the East of GMT has a positive value depending on its location away from GMT and any country to West of GMT will have a negative value. This now determines the time of each country relative to it's position vis a vis the GMT.

Now another thing is standard time. A country like Nigeria is not exactly 15 degrees East, it is something from 6 degrees to 12 degrees East. But Nigerian standard time is 1 hour ahead of GMT at Long 15 degrees East (in reality Maiduguri to the East experiences sunrise and sunset at a different time from Sokoto to the West. Larger countries like Russia, USA and Canada keep more than one standard time since they have several time zones (each 15 degree is a time zone. So you hear them saying so and so Eastern time (say New York) and so and so Western time (say California).

The attached picture shows the lines of longitude passing through Nigeria. All countries with same lines passing from North to South have basically the same time.

With a projected population of about 18 million by Lagos State Government, we can assume an Igbo population of 7.2 million in Lagos alone, over 3 million in Kano alone, leaving the other Northern states to share 8 million Igbos. With Lagos statistics we can safely assume, over another 11 million Igbos in the SW. This means about over 22 million Igbos living in the North and South West. -

Lol. Igbos are not up to 500k in the whole of the North. In Kano, Fagge LGA where Sabon gari is located has a population of less than 400k and they are not the majority there. Most other northern states will not have more than 10k Igbos each with the exception of Kaduna. Some states may even have less than 5k Igbos.

Politics / Re: Igbo Walka Walka: A Blessing Or A Curse? by Salym(m): 6:11pm On Jun 26, 2020
SouthEastFacts:
It is not a secret that the Igbos are the most mobile tribe in Nigeria. With about 35% of a total population of about 50 million living in the South East, their home land, the Igbos have the best spread in the country. A recent projection shows that about 11 million are living in the North alone, and there is this concensus among different writers that Lagos population is made up of about 40% Igbos. Another source claim there is over 40% Igbos in the population of Nigerians in Diaspora, 20% in cities like Kano, Jos e.t.c. www.nigeriaworld.com/feature/publication/nnebe/101013.html. Collaborating the 40% Igbos in Nigerians in diaspora, an informal survey showed that an average extended family in Igboland has atleast one family member outside the country

We are going to concisely discuss the social and economic benefits of this mobility.

Before we proceed, we are going to make one thing clear, using the exact words of Nnede, a former Wall Street Investment banker, "The Igbos are simply very republic in nature, and would easily uproot themselves and their families to greener pastures without qualms. When I use the phrase greener pastures, it does not necessarily represent better developed areas. Just better opportunities, and when they can't find one upon arrival would create one for themselves."

The number one blessing is that the Igbos can never be exterminated. With only about 35% of their population living within the region, should anything happen to SE either by natural or unnatural means, the other 65% though psychologically beaten will be their to continue the race.

Traveling is part of learning, especially with respect to human behaviour. Through experiences garnered through travelling, South East has the most understanding of the behaviour of the different tribes in the country. This explains why they are better traders in the country, even in West Africa, building the largest and busiest market in Africa (Onitsha Main Market, Onitsha) and the four Largest market in Nigeria (Ariria Int'l Market, Aba).

Nigerians in diaspora remitted into the country since 2015 stands at $20.8bn, that is about #7.519 trillion either for financial development projects or to assist family members. www.dailypost.ng/2017/07/26/nigerians-diaspora-repatriate-n7-519-trillion-nigeria-finance-development/ using the above statistics of Igbos in diaspora, Igbos contributed to about $8.32 bn into Nigerian foreign reserve and repatriates about over #3 trillion to families in the SE, while the rest of the country shares about #4.5 bn at average of about #900 bn for each of the 5 regions. This is one of the blessings that come from traveling.

There are massive Igbo investments all over the country. Infact, one report showed that there are about #44 trillion worth of Igbo investments in the North alone www.sunnewsonline.com/igbo-and-their-trapped-trillions/ While some people believes that those trillions are trapped, but the truth is they are not. The main reason is that International laws allow global citizens to acquire and owe legitimately properties in any part of the world and two, no sane person will destroy an investment worth of #44 trillion.

Most of these investments are started with small capitals and cannot strive in the East, so it makes economic sense to site them in areas where comparative costs are lowest, instead of trying to invest the small capital in the East. Just like MTN repatriates profits to South Africa, Apple China to the USA, these investments will as well make repatriation down to the East, including their Corporate social responsibilities. This is because in Igbo land, no matter how rich you are, you are judged by your impact in your community, how many successful people you have groomed, the later is usually used to rate traders. If you have not trained a successful trader, you are counted as nothing. This is known as the 'Aku ruo ulo philosophy' it is the basis of the Igbo resilience.

Let assume, we have Biafra, Oduduwa and Arewa. With Igbo investments scattered all over Nigeria before separation, Biafra will exert massive influence on the economy of Oduduwa and Arewa. This will grow into political influence with time when leveraged on properly. Repatriation from these countries will lead to a larger foreign reserve, which will translate into a stronger currency.

The population of Ndi Igbo is growing rapidly across the 5 other regions, if managed and leveraged on properly will lead to a politically and economically stronger EAST. While other regions have to open their eyes to the massive opportunities this offers, we shall continue to make this incursion, while repatriation the benefits home.

#SEfacts
3 million Igbos in Kano? Do you know that the population of Kano city, where the Igbos are mostly found is not more than 3 million. What kind of statistics is this? Igbos in Kano State are not up to two hundred thousand please. (Check the population of Fagge LGA where Sabon gari is located; its not more than 400 thousand and Igbos are definitely not the majority there. In other northern states their population will be in the range of 10 to 20 thousand or less with the exception of Kaduna where they may be above 50 thousand. All in all there aren't more than 500 thousand Igbos in the whole North.

There is nothing wonderful about the Architecture there: infact buildings in the first generation universities are way better than the crappy buildings of CU. Just imagine those hostel designs forced to look like some religious symbols to the detriment of functionality of space and circulation patterns. I assure you most new students in that school will get lost countless times before they become accustomed to that maze like circulation in the buildings. In a nutshell, CU buildings are reminiscent of the mediocre architecture practiced in Nigeria today by most architects.

Oga its the samething here in the North. I was stopped yesterday by the Road safety officials. They asked for several things, which I have ofcourse. They even have a mobile court by the side. But to my dismay, they were allowing the public transport vehicles through with just a wave of hand. I was actually furious. Road safety has simply turned into a money generating organisation. I have been looking for a way to air my grievances. Such attitudes are unacceptable.

There is one worrisome constant phenomenon here. Each time a news like this breaks out, there is always 99% possibility that the person is from the Southern part of Nigeria (SW, SS or SE). The highest one can guess up north is North Central. What is happening to the core Northerners? Nigeria will get better the moment their names begin to grace this kind of news. It will mean a change in their orientation.
Plenty northerners have graduated with excellent results abroad. You just dnt hear about it because many dont share it online or simply because only a few northerners are on this forum, so chances of them bringing the news here is slim. An example is the case of my friend who graduated as the best student with an msc in structural engineering from his faculty even tho his first degree was in architecture.

The function of cable stays in suspension bridges is to allow for having wider spans without column support. If you check the bridge properly, you will notice that column spacing is greater where the cable stays are located.

Business / Re: Amusing Names Nigerians Give Naira Notes by Salym(m): 10:43am On Feb 25, 2018
Op should remove the Hausa naming of currency notes because there is nothing amusing in that. It is actually the same way you name currency in English. Hausas hardly have other names for currency- those existing, like wazobia and murtala for instance, are widely used all over the country. It should be noted that such difference from other Nigerian tribes arised due to the fact that the Hausa language has an effective and active numbering system that is widely used for every day to day transactions. However, southern languages, Yoruba for example, to my little understanding either do not have a comprehensive numbering system (I may be wrong) or have abandoned it in favour of the English numbering system. I have, times without number, teased my Yoruba friends, both during NYSC and post grad studies, with numbers - like 103, 657 - for instance and watch with amusement how they struggle to name them- and they mostly fail to do so in the end. Such would have been a very easy task for a Hausa speaker. Test yourself and see if you can name the above numbers in your language. Mine is ' dubu dari da dubu uku da dari shida da hamsin da bakwai'.

Se u guys no get brain atall ni? what does a renowned 73 old criminal like Atiku have to offer Nigeria? Can't we root for and support someone outside the political scene to help propel our nation forward?? Do we have to continue licking the ass of old papas?? If Atiku is the only alternative to Buhari come 2019, I am sorry to say, Buhari will be our president till 2023.
I think I share the same opinion with you. If Atiku will be the PDP's flagbearer against PMB, we can simply say that it is better for the current administration to be given yet another term in office. Nigeria at this point, needs someone, most probably no one among our present politicians, who can lead and unite the country to prosperity. Someone who will appoint people based on merit not based on nepotism. A person who has the will to fire and prosecute any one found wanting in his government. But all this is not possible until Nigerians unite against the current crop of politicians whose only aim is to further enrich themselves and their lineage. I am fully confident that Nigeria will one day reach the position it deserves. But however, the power of her reaching her potentials is in our hands. The will and decision lies with us; we either do the right thing or contonue going in circles for a very long time.

Your case is pathetic. Can you please show us where Islam permitted taking drugs. Same law applies to drugs and alcohol. But on another note, you fools behave as if your bibble allows you to be taking alcohol and getting drunk. Oh, I forget, Christians choose what to obey and what not to obey in the bibble or simply call for a revision. But with all these, we dont abuse your religion. Surprisingly, when a Xtian does something wrong, its on him, but when a muslim does similar, oh hell it is Islam.

I understand why Christians in Nigeria are all against this lady wearing a hijab to the bar. It is simply because the laws and traditions were copied from Britain, whom they share same religious beliefs with. Hence they are comfortable with the laws and do not see anything wrong with them. If it were the other way round, they would have been shouting of Islamisation and the likes. Their bigotry is unprecedented from their religious leaders down to the common people on the streets. You people should understand and accommodate diversity. I applaud her for bringing this to the fore. This will bring a change to the needless law afterall.

This is of course a moderate lefe. I personally know some one who spent 4 million for his. But what you people should understand is that not everyone does dinners which can be more expensive than the lefe. All this is compensated by the fact that the bride's family provides furniture (including 2 sets of beds), utensils and kitchen wares. In the end, the brides family may spend more than the groom.
