American troops are not in combat in Syria. The 400 American troops remaining are in the buffer zone in territory held by Kurdish forces.
Their main aim is to prevent conflict btw Turkish army and Kurdish rebels. Something that happened when Trump ordered the sudden withdrawal in 2019 and was practically beged to rethink his action.

The plan is for gradual withdrawal to prevent sudden vacuum like what happened in Afghanistan.

I think the main issue with the russian army is lack of motivation by the infantry. Maybe due to poor remuneration or opposition to the invasion itself. There had been reports of subtle rebellion within the russian battalion against their officers. We also cannot rule out corruption and embezzlement within the top ranks that Putin himself is ignorant about. Small wonder those Generals were reluctant to support Putin- they knew what was coming.
Anyhow, invasion of another country is an expensive misadventure. U need to invest in modern weaponry, maintenance and upgrade, logistics and communication have to be top notch and relaible, the soldiers have to well motivated and willing to sacrifice. Your army has to understand the terrain or else they just sitting ducks.
