Nigeria ministries get single bank account to fight fraud

President Buhari, who gave the Tuesday deadline, believes officials have stolen about $150bn over the past decade
A deadline for Nigerian government departments to ensure all financial transactions pass through a single bank account expires at the end of Tuesday.
The move is intended to make it easier to monitor government spending and stamp out corruption.
The account will be managed by the central bank and it is estimated that commercial banks will lose $10bn (£7bn) when the money is transferred.
Departments that fail to comply by midnight (23:00) will face sanctions.
BBC Africa Live: News updates
President Muhamadu Buhari, who gave the order to close the multiple bank accounts, has said that he believes government officials have stolen about $150bn over the past decade.

Obadiah Mailafia, the former deputy governor of Nigeria's Central Bank, told the BBC's Focus on Africa radio programme that it has been easy for fraud to take place because the government did not know how many bank accounts each ministry held.
"They provided avenues for corrupt ransacking behaviour in the past. So the thinking of government was to centralise these accounts so they are easier to monitor," Mr Mailafia said.
The BBC's Abdullahi Kaura Abubakar in the capital, Abuja, says the recent implementation of a single account for state finances has also helped Kaduna state track down funds.
The state has reportedly uncovered 25bn naira ($13m; £8m) it previously was not aware existed, he says.

Ask yourself these if you think buhari is on point.. Why did he oder all the ministries to bank with unity bank only? Why ban 113 oil vessels from importing cruid and appointing just four companies (Femi and co) to do so. Why asking all the vessles to land only in Intel's jetty while Ifeanyi oba and co owns the highest jetty in Africa. The fuel scarcity we have today is as a result of buharis dumb moves in the name of fighting currpotion. Oil marketers have refused to land in Intel's instead they land in cotonue and syphone oil into Nigeria with boats. Now 3 refineries in Nigeria have been shout down because they produce below 60 percent efficiency and buhari is so broke he can't afford $500m to fix each of them. GEJ may be the reason we are hia but I believe you know that under his administration Nigeria became the richest country in Africa. You and I could see it, the way u manage ur money now u can't compare to before. Nigeria is a developing country, you can't just wake up one day and regulate every look and coner of the system, it won't work!!
Lol, any source as to the directive that all ministries to bank with unity bankhuh?
Nigeria was rich under Jonathan, how rich did you become as a Nigerian

What did you expect with fake statistics that the last government was churning out?.

In any case a lot of it is global recession related and some are changing culture in Nigeria. Look at the list properly. Breweries are going out of business the world over in Nigeeia even more as they are going in the opposite direction to Churches which are growing by the day. Lafarge is crashing because Dangote is climbing.FMCG sector however is booming because operators know their market.

Buhari economics will start in January. What Nigeria is doing now is managing the disaster of Jonathan economics when the high oil price that was COVERING it up crashed.

Buhari will reflate by constructing roads, dams, bridges, sewage and drainage systems just to create employment for young people. This will increase inflation till 2017 and will drop the naira even more but people will be gainfully employed and we will have infrastructure and growth. After 2017 the boost in local demand by many young people working will pull in foreign investments and the economy will start booming. Nigeria should keep up the anti corruption war, collect it's taxes, endure short term inflatiom and try to keep young people employed...this young people employment is very important and Breweries and all the businesses you have mentioned will not do the trick. Massive public works is the answer.
Then we can grow sustainably like China instead of stupidly like Brazil.
The Nigerian economy has a lot of latent potential, inspire of inadequate power, see what we HV achieved. For the past five months d government HV not been carrying out capital expenditure, perhaps that will pick up with the swearing in of ministers.
The govt plans 7-8 trillion naira budget with about 30% made up of capital expenditure, for the first time, this will be the highest capital allocation. The jump in d recurrent budget to me looks like there is going to be an increase in public sector job creation and other pallavatives as well.
Churning out companies making loses is not typical of Nigerian alone and should also not be a surprise, the world economy is slowing down, China exports fell 19% last quarter, we who are mono dependent on oil are even doing well, from an all time high of $150-$45 per barrel, and we still standing! We should be asking what was achieved when oil was $150 per barrel.
Recent events HV shown that we could even fund our budget without reliance on crude. Am also envisaging a situation where next year budget is not pegged around the price of crude rather taxes, customs target alone for this year is N944b, who says they can't do a N1.5trillion next year? Mtn fine sef will be used for finance the budget. Just that we are all in a rush .......my thoughts though

I was sitting down in shoprite waiting for my (office) driver on the queue to buy fuel during working hours ...... some girls around seven occupied my table and the table next to me ..... Then two of them started acting funny by brushing my hands on many occasions while gazing like IDEK (I dont even know)...... I just acted as if they do not exist until I firmly looked at the one disturbing me like "wtf" undecided , I ain't here for zhit !!!!

I also remember a day a girl on the street walked back and asked me am I calling her cuz I fixed my gaze at her and I told her no oooo .... my guys around fault me sha.

Marry the wrong girl and be unhappy for the rest of Ur life .... get a divorce and start all over again in wife market (who get time) with a divided home.

About to go for my PhD now ... single, young," girlfriend less , energetic and happy .... Verily that dream girl will come , I just want to be ready for her!!!!
Exactly, nothing in the head. Met an Akwa Ibom corper recently, beautiful, nice shape and all, with time I had to run away cos the beauty was only the physical, no inner beauty. Yes the physical beauty attracts every guy, but only the inner beauty keeps a real man. More so when the girl starts talking about making her preg even without marriage, nna, na run I run o

In my doctoral class, when we complain about timing for lectures or reading, I try not to complain because when I do both lecturer and colleagues will remind me me that am the only unmarried dude in d class of 6.
I just got a ride, and the next question was where is the girl?
Not that I don't desire it, but it mustn't be with just anyone, my heart needs to beat for that special one, cos truth be told many young ladies, but few wives.

Very informative and entertaining grin

I think universities in Nigeria should have career services that teach job search skills like resume and CV writing and interview skills. The career services should also contact recruiters for Jobs on behalf of their students. That's how it's done in most places.

Our Universities are laughable to be honest, I got to the third year of my engineering degree in Nigeria and I had not used a computer. Not even microsoft applications. Meanwhile, First years in other countries have started designing robots, learning AutoCAD, solidworks, excel,MATLAB etc.

You just cannot compare both abeg.
As an engineering student, if u know the programs and software you should use and your sch ain't providing for you, nothing stops you in learning them your self, that gives you the edge over your colleagues, not complaing about its absence in ur sch

You are a wise man, exactly what I've been saying, if push comes to shove, the Niger delta and ijaws will rather become a country on their own rather than being second fiddle to the Igbo's in biafra. Now if Biafra must exist, they will be landlocked in BTW rivers, akwa ibom, kogi, Benue, with no access to international waters.

Imagine what Ukraine is going through because Russia has gas pipes that runs through her country, who ever gives you resource and is bigger than you become ur lord

Truth is the IBO's have the legitimate right secession, but must keep in mind that the Biafra of ojukwu days cannot be d same as today. He needs to assure his followers that natives of rivers state, akwa ibom, calabar, bayelsa and even the deltan IBO's will willing join him in Biafra or decide to either stand alone or remain the zoo.
Your guess however is as good as mine as the ijaws will rather become a nation of its own, then another challenge arises, how will the 5south east states, land locked, without international airport or major water ways with access to the high sea survive when they are surrounded by different countries or nationalities?
Political history also tells us that every new country must fight her own civil war.
Just my plenty thoughts sha. The IBO's should simply call for a referendum on secession......

The effect will be much on the likes of zenith bank, first bank etc that HV very active public sector units. Already you see zenith laying off staff, also recall one of the actions of d CBN gov upon resumption was to reduce crr on public sector funds, most esp to help the likes of his bank zenith to give them breathing space on using govt fund to lend. Its means most of these banks that declare over a trillion in deposit will significantly feel the shock of d withdrawal.
Mind you, not just the fg alone, some states are also following this footstep by closing several accounts and concentrating on one bank. Kaduna have done same, rivers is doing same.

The end result is to force banks to lend to the real sector, yes jobs will be lost here and there, but any bank that wants to remain in business must find ways to lend to businesses and not rely on free govt money with which they use in buying govt treasury bills and earn interest just recycling govt money without impact on the real economy.
