During an interview with Eni-B of THIS DAY Newspapers in 2001 shortly after he turned 60, this is how (according to Eni-B) General Babangida justified the execution of General Vatsa and others in 1986: ", Babangida said it was after Vatsa's coup was foiled that he realised his childhood friend and classmate planned the coup in line with a deep-seated personal rivalry, going back to their days as young officers. He said that unconsciously he and Vatsa had been great competitors; that as a young officer, whatever he did Vatsa equally did and whatever Vatsa achieved, he also went after. He said it was Lt. Gen. T.Y. Danjuma who pointed this out to him from their military records.
Babangida gave this rationalisation to justify why he could not pardon Vatsa. He said when he first heard his childhood friend was planning a coup, he decided to do nothing but monitor him. He said however that Vatsa came to him to complain thus, "You heard I was planning a coup and couldn't even ask me. What kind of friend are you?" To this Babangida said he replied thus, "I didn't believe it or are you planning a coup?" He said Vatsa replied in the negative and the matter was forgotten until there was evidence of the plot. He said he instructed that Vatsa be arrested and detained so as not to allow him impede investigation.
"However, he tried to escape through the air condition hole. I couldn't understand why he was trying to escape if he was not involved in a coup plot," Babangida said. He added with a frown, "But while watching the video of his execution, I turned my eyes away when I saw him remove his watch and ask a soldier to give his wife. I couldn't continue watching." He said he couldn't retire or imprison Vatsa because he believed the guy could still have planned a coup either in retirement or in prison. "Rawlings did it in Ghana and you know Vatsa was very stubborn," he said."

What I fail to understand is the line , "the man who killed his friend, ". As far as gorvernment especially military one is concerned, there is no friendship when a supposed friend plans to overthrow your regime. Coup plotters know the consequences of their action. They are ready to kill in order to succeed and must be prepared to die when they fail.
I accept there are many other sins of IBB but the execution of Vatsa has got to be a lame excuse not to want him. Anyhow, he still remains the man to beat in this election. He has Dr. Raymond Dokpesi as his campaign DG while Jonathan has Dr. Talffida or Alams as his. No doubt it is 1-0 to IBB in this Department.

I want to blv u are doing an objective analyis of IBB chances and not his fan. IBB killed his friend Vatsa, may be u shuld get full story and watch the other suspects interview(I will post u the videos I u want). Agreed if IBB killed Vatsa, Dele Giwa," MKO","Ejigbo ADC crash victims" by the prevailing rule that time by natural law of human genetical inclinations IBB as a new leader will always want to kill or at best silence oppositions. I beg to differ with u.I am a child of history and learn from history a lot. Do u remember OBJ? He was a former military president b/4 I was born and tank God for history he was known to be brutal, vengeful and anything but humane. Then incarcerated by Abacha. OJB announced he was now born again (a new creature). Then IBB and his frend calld on OBJ to assuage d loss of MKO (bla bla bla). Even against his people's wish (the yoruba) OBJ came back and turned out to b more wicked than he was in his first coming. IBB, a ruthless killer,intolerant and wicked schemer btw 1985 and 1993 did not go to prison (no sober reflection like OBJ) but coming back into presidency my frend he is going to b ther for live. Our target is the locals that might have 4gotten we are actually being presented with a poison as dinner. I am currently collating videos, pictures and my creative frends are developing foto-stories that summarize the Evil in the Genius or the Genius in the Evil. Our next stage is to ave all this items in every local market with IBB pictures but Dele Giwa strory, IBB pictures but Ukiwe story, IBB picture but MKO stories, IBB pictures but Vatsa stories. We know we are not up against a human in IBB but matriarch of all principalities (like the holy book predicted) and we are going to face him with the same lethal weapon. can not believe this post. It has taken me almost 5 years for Dr. Mikeansy to finally realize all I have been preaching. It is absolutely no brainier, if you truly understand what is on the ground in Nigeria you'll understand that more than anything stamina, big balls, big name, strong connections and enormous experience are required to push anything through.

FYI I was on Lagos street as a restless teenager participating live in the protests in 1993. It started peacefully and b/4 u know it thugs took over attacking Govt installations and offices (like u expect) and the soldiers responded with fires (I lost a friend to soldier's fire and I saw a dead pregnant woman from stray bullet) and like a nightmare the soldiers tool over and came into streets harassing and thrashing every1 including women and infants.
