Politics › Anambra Worst Hit By Flood - Presidential Team. by Standing5(op): 3:15pm On Oct 06, 2012 |
The team from the Federal Government led by the Minister of Environment, Hadiza Ibrahim Mailafa and accompanied by the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah; the Minister of State for Works, Ambassador Bashir Yuguda; the National Emergency Management Agency, Mohammad Sani Sidi said that Anambra State was the worst hit by the flood that was currently ravaging 14 states in the country.
They made this observation after touring affected States and Local Governments.
The Minister of Environment said that Anambra was situated at the lowest point of the River Niger that occasioned the enormous destruction wrought by the flood.
The Minister and all the members of his team commended Governor Obi for his efforts to assist the victims.
The Minister of Aviation whose house alongside that of the Former Minister Prince John Emeka; the former Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Prince Chinedu Emeka; the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Princess Chinwe Nwebili; the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Oselloka Obaze, among others were under water said that the situation was clearly beyond human comprehension.
He thanked the Governor for his relentless efforts to offer assistance and support to the affected communities and assured that the Federal Government would surely come to the aid of affected State.
She said that while in other communities, houses and farmland were destroyed, but in Anambra that multi billion naira industries, including the three industries the President commissioned on the 30th of Angust when he visited the State as well as Orient Petroleum facility and office were currently under water.
Conducting them round the flooded areas, some of which they visited in Helicopter, Governor Obi who had to cancel all his engagements, including his trip to Mexico because of the natural calamity said that four Local Government areas of Anambra West, Ayamelum, Anambra East and Ogbaru were completely submerged in water, while four others, Awka North, Ihiala and Onitsha North and Onitsha South suffered various degrees of destruction .

Politics › MASSOB Loses 1000 Members To AIYO (Association of Igbo Youths) by Standing5(op): 3:02pm On Oct 06, 2012 |
Awka – No fewer than 1,000 members of MASSOB have deserted the association and joined another one, an official of the new association has said.
A statement from the Association of Igbo Youths (AIYO), signed by its Director of Publicity, Mr Charles Chikelu, on Friday attributed the development to the attitude of the MASSOB leadership.
It claimed that the plight of many youths who had suffered or lost their lives in the course of working in MASSOB resulted to the action by the group.
According to the group, many youths who are MASSOB members are languishing in various prisons without trial while many others lost their lives in the course of carrying out MASSOB functions.
Chikelu also claimed that many MASSOB members were in mortuaries and abandoned by the leadership.
The new group further expressed regrets that no compensation had been paid to families of those who died in MASSOB crisis.
The association expressed support for the closure of all camps of MASSOB in different parts of Onitsha, Anambra.
The statement noted that the association was a youth vanguard which promoted peace, love and oneness of the Igbo in accordance with the laws of the country.
It added that the organisation was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission since 2007 and that it was legal.
It appealed to Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra, the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, human rights organisation and Igbo political leaders to save them from the MASSOB leadership.
“We have changed and dropped MASSOB and opted for the Association of Igbo Youths,’’ it said. (NAN)

Whether Ojukwu starved his people out of fear or Awo cut food supply . . . all is justified bro. Musi. Will you lend your neighbor who is angry with you your knife or cutlass? or allow him feed fat through on your effort while he tells you tale of how he is more of a man and independent than you? Awo did nothing out of place if anything he shouldn't have allowed food and aids to Biafra in the first place. He pitied them thinking they would do the reasonable thing but when he realized they weren't going change he had to support what he needed to support from the onset. . . Chikena!!! |

Politics › Re: Ndigbo Must Look Northward,Westward, Diaspora For The Next Crop Of Igbo Leaders by Standing5(m): 3:39pm On Sep 26, 2012 |
ogugua88: You can find a good or bad Igbo in any and every region of Nigeria. Trying to confine ourselves to finding a true Igbo leader who can bring successes to that region with prerequisites such as being native born and bred in Igboland only limits Igbos in my opinion. Limiting it to Nigerian-born candidates, or people with a certain amount of consecutive residency is understandable, but when we start picking regions, it starts sounding ridiculous.
It's comparible to how there are people in Igboland who can't read or understand Igbo, and there are Igbos born and raised in other regions of Nigeria or even abroad, who can read and write the language. Where you were raised doesn't necessarily dictate how "Igbo" one is nor does it measure success for a potential Igbo leader. What we need is a person, or people, with the right qualities, ideas, and a solid track record as affirmation as to how they can perform in the future. +1 |
Christianity Etc › Re: Nigerian Churches: Who Are They Building Universities For? by Standing5(m): 12:28pm On Sep 26, 2012 |
abysirius: This perhaps must have crossed a lot of minds at the thought of the ridiculous tuition fees that most of these private universities (most especially churches owned schools) charge their student. Come to think of it, these schools are built with church funds yet it is only the rich, I mean 'very rich' that are only capable of sending their children to these schools. If I may use JABU- Joseph Ayo Babalola University owned by CAC- as an example, I was in year 1 @ LAUTECH when they where still raising money for the school. After every sunday service the pastor would come and remind every member of their commitment towards building the school. So then it was a normal routine that they raised a special offering for the building of the university then. This happens in virtually all CAC churches throughout the federation during this time. Those that are CAC members can bear me witness. They'll task everybody and I tell you, pple supported this mission with the mind that @ least if the school is built it will still help my children. We all know that ratio of the rich to the poor in most CAC churches are like 30:70. The reason is not far-fetched. CAC is predominantly a yoruba church for the not too educated class except for some few top notch in the society that specifically like their service, the church is filled with petty traders.
Back to my point exactly: Now that the school is in operation, how many of these poor petty CAC traders can send their children to the school for enrolment? What exactly is the aim of the church mgt.: Is it to bridge the gap btw the poor and the rich or to widen it? Do they ever think of rewarding these poor pple that contributed towards the creation os these schools or are they of the opinion that their reward is in heaven when even the 'G.O.s' are rreaping theirs here on earth? What kinda message are we sending out to our immediate environment. Before the emergence of these so called private schools in Nigeria tertiary schools were pretty okay. LAUTECH was paying 2,500 naira. In 2006 it became 6k. Before I left it was 40k thanks to Baptist Missionary, CAC, the 7th adventist mission, catholic churh, abi no be dem get Ajayi crowther? Winners, in fact na u try pass. Pls we need to wake up and stop been fooled in the name of Christ. I don't know your take on this but I believe there could better ways to this. Ur views are welcom.. Now i don't dispute your experience from CAC, but there are churches like winners were both Private Sponsors and Church members eagerly look forward for their announcement on new donation towards the building of the school. You made a grievous mistake when u generalized all church unis. Now i know this is Nl where u will get tons of users who are wiling to bash the reputation of the private unis for free!!! It may also interest you to know that winner uni do grant scholarship o all sorts. . . as evident in some of their church announcement bulletin. |

alaoeri: This 'll surely reduce the number of first class & 2.1 in babcock, covenant etc. please read up Osheshe's post for better undestanding of the situation. I passed thru the same agony in the same school as her and everything she has said is 100% true. In addition to her post i also want to stress that, it is more of financial rip off to the students as some departments are overloaded with workload. Some department take as much as 32 units standard (NUC standard) equivalent a semester. I remember vividly during my final year, i took average of 25 unit course work per semester (24 for first semester and 26 for second semester). This alone made tons of student from my department candidate of Re-sit and summer school. Now i know the way most public sch are they take approx. 17 unit in their final year(FYP inclusive). |
