maestroferddi: Doctors are very greedy I must agree. Imagine a pharmacist who spends just less than a year in school than a doctor being relegated to almost nothingness.

At times one begins to ask whether na juju doctors use in keeping the health sector securely in their palms.

They exercise a strangehold on other health professionals; a vice grip they wouldn't relax in the foreseeable future.

The case of nurses and midwives is better left undiscussed.

To all these docs, make una take una time o, or else Nigerians will mobilise and open up the health sector to address the egregious injustice. I am not a health worker BTW.

bushdoc9919: Sorry I am late.

The problem with Ebola is that we medics do not have the facilities to deal with Ebola. Add the fact that it takes people long to get to hospital, zero good isolation facilities, and the fact that water does not flow regularly...and you get the picture.

At least....the health workers in Nigeria....not just docs...are doing a good job containing the virus so far. And Uganda...which has a good record combating ebola (and who has a High Grade Lab for Ebola testing too...at Gulu)....has sent health workers to give advice and care.

The story of EBola in West Africa is too complicated to just blame doctors.

That is why NMA and JOHESU should work together to fight for increased health care funding.
. Tank u. NMA & Johesu shuld work 2geda, gud point. But is NMA willing to work togeda wit Johesu? No! Dey want to work on top of dem. MT: Its so interesting how doctors are coming up with detailed analysis of what residency is all about. Thank you for that , not that we never knew before. But get this straight, medical sector is about to be strategically repositioned and FG has all the aces.. Surely resdency will be reinstated but on a very new term that will remove all the existing excesses. Its going to be a take-it or leave-it kind of a thing. Doctors can't be holding the nation and other professionals to ransom. This corrective action by Jonathan is welcome.

It seems that you're ignorant of what is happing in the health sector. Its the poor masses that will suffer. Doctors will emerge from this stronger than ever. All they needed is patience and unity. The poor masses will bear the brunt. Let me share this with forum. It happened last week. My neighbour who works in the medical record department boasted one day that she knew everything in medicine and her knowledge surpassed mine as a doctor. Last week she fall ill probably malaria, she came to me begging for free prescription as usual. I advised her to go to private hospital, she ignored me. A day later, she came shivering and vomiting, I also advised her to go hospital. She went and was admitted for 24 hours. She paid 20,000 naira and since then she has stopped making silly comments about doctors. She learnt a big lesson she will never forget.
. Dis is one thin dat disgusts me about dese drs, dey lov to shine wit people's problems (just as dey r tryin to take advantage of dis ebola scourge). Mayb one day wen u don't hav a dime in ur pocket, wit all ur money in d bank, u ll queue up to withdraw money (to pay ur children's fees & feed ur family) , d banker (anoda nebo of urs) will make u crawl, kneel, beg & sweat from ur balls b4 he/she issues u d money , so dat u ll also learn a big lesson u ll never 4get. #no man is indispensible#

What the Drs are now fighting for is their jobs and not the 24 commandments again. This life get as E be sha. bushdoc9919: Let me explain further.

A Senior registrar in surgery, for instance, can perform very advanced types of surgery. For example....as a medical student I worked under a Senior registrar who was doing delicate surgery for congenital intestine problems(the gent is now a consultant surgeon). Let's say I was to replace him. Now I know some surgical skills....but I hardly have the knowledge base to do such type of surgery. (And anyways....I want to become an internist! wink).

A senior registrar knows a lot more than a junior registrar , or even a medical officer/senior house officer,...or house officer (that's the pecking order amongst us docs.). Asking a medical officer to replace a senior reg is the same as asking a primary one school teacher to teach Advanced Calculus 502 to a group of postgraduate Maths students at university.
. Even wit all dese long epistle, u pple can't treat ebola (or at least maintain it like ur counterparts abroad), mortality rate in hospitals especially durin childbirth keep increasin (dats y most rich ppl travel out for their child delivery), even common organ transplant dats rampart in other countries una no sabi, so wats d use of all dese ..bla bla..u did 5yrs here, 20yrs here ..etc. We need practical thins, we need to see d effect of dis u pple's 'superiority complex', we r not seein it. I don't knw ..I don't want to beliv dis is like..empty vessels makin too much noise..I don't. Dreambeat: Fashola did not win anything. Don't let me go into the details of what happened. We have to fight this battle now once and for all for the good of the populace and the progress of the health sector in this country. A lot of people are just so uninformed about what is going on in our government hospitals, those that are, choose to take side against doctors out of sentiment. Things can not just continue the way they are right now. The hospitals are in a big mess. I know how many times I have had to walk and sometimes run to the theatre to BEG for disposable gloves to work with. Lots of things are just not right in our training centres especially.

Christianity EtcRe: Happy Feast Of Assupmtion To All Catholics by Sunshinelady(f): 10:31am On Aug 15, 2014
SalC: Celebrated every year on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay--a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a Holy Day of Obligation.

Quick Facts:

• Date: August 15.

• Type of Feast: Solemnity; Holy Day of Obligation.

.  Readings: Revelation 11:19a, 12:1-6a, 10ab; Psalm 45:10, 11, 12, 16; 1 Corinthians 15:20-27; Luke 1:39-56

• Prayers: The Hail Mary

• Other Names for the Feast: The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary; The Assumption of Mary Into Heaven; The Dormition of the Theotokos; The Falling Asleep of the Blessed Virgin Mary

History of the Assumption:

The Feast of the Assumption is a very old feast of the Church, celebrated universally by the sixth century. The feast was originally celebrated in the East, where it is known as the Feast of the Dormition, a word which means "the falling asleep." The earliest printed reference to the belief that Mary's body was assumed into Heaven dates from the fourth century, in a document entitled "The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God." The document is written in the voice of the Apostle John, to whom Christ on the Cross had entrusted the care of His mother, and recounts the death, laying in the tomb, and assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Tradition variously places Mary's death at Jerusalem or at Ephesus, where John was living.

A Required Belief:

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life is a defined dogma of the Catholic Church. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII, exercising papal infallibility, declared in Munificentissimus Deus that it is a dogma of the Church "that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory." As a dogma, the Assumption is a required belief of all Catholics; anyone who publicly dissents from the dogma, Pope Pius declared, "has fallen away completely from the divine and Catholic Faith."

While the Eastern Orthodox believe in the Dormition, they object to the papal definition of the dogma, seeing it as unnecessary, since belief in Mary's bodily assumption, tradition holds, goes back to apostolic times.

Pope Pius XII, in the text explaining his definition of the dogma of the Assumption, refers repeatedly to the Blessed Virgin's death before her Assumption, and the consistent tradition in both the East and the West holds that Mary did die before she was assumed into Heaven. However, since the definition of the Assumption is silent on this question, Catholics can legitimately believe that Mary did not die before the Assumption.

OlawumiX: While I sympathize with the isolated patients, and hold government responsible for our weak/failed health system. The medical personnel who held this press conference are just plain hypocrites, absence of electricity, sanitation and lack attention is how they have been running the hospitals before now. People have been dying of these causes way before now, when did they actually care? Someone said an American doctor has been footing bills what have they as colleges and family been doing? For as long as I can remember doctors have told us that there is no need for anyone to travel abroad for medical treatment because there professionals here- where the professionals now.

Nigerian government needs to do more, much more, the present crisis has exposed the fallacy of our health system. They need to spend money and put policy in place to fight this situation, I am aware that the staffs of Doctors without borders and the CDC are on ground and are actively involved in this but what is the role of the 1000s of staffs of the federal ministry of health in this?
exactly

12inches1: This is so disheartening. It is so sad that we cannot manage just 10 ISOLATED CASES. This shows how prepared we are for an outbreak. This also means that chukwu minister has been lying to us all along- typical of GEJ's administration. How are we now sure that the 177 contacts he said are under surveillance are truly being monitored. I believe he should resign since he cannot manage the situation. Do you know that the American doctor single handedly treating all the ebola cases has left and there is no other nigerian doctor stupid enough to volunteer (see how the present ones with the virus are being treated)? Do you know that GEJ has just sacked resident doctors who form 80 percent of doctors in federal hospitals coming at a point in time when we are in danger of an epidemic? Do you know that if there is an outbreak we will all be on our own. I heard from a source that some nigerians are already stocking up tickets out of the country in case the situation goes out of hand. These 'special nigerians' i'm sure you know. The health workers are nigerians too. They must not be left to die. These are the masses. God help us all.
. U were making sense b4 u mentioned d sacking of d doctors. Were dey working b4 dey were sacked? Bunch of selfish thins, making incessant demands, yet wen d country needs dem d most dey turn dere backs. D decision to sack dem was a good one , u can't be at home like log of wood, be receivin salary & yet not com to save d lives of dying ones whom u swore to care for. Its best to remove dem & put in those redy to work, am sorry to say but Drs a wicked o, using dis ebola as a weapon to fight for their selfish needs, not minding dat their colleagues are also victims of disease. 1 you want federal govt not to pay other health workers what they agreed
2 you want fed govt to overturn a court ruling on consultancies for other health care

3 you want fed government to pay you 100k hazard allowance not minding that d hazard u face is minimal compare to d one face by the orderly or health attendant that clean up the mess they did and left, the nurse that is with d patient 24/7 lab scientist that deals with biohazard everyday.as at now a doctor have died of Ebola,2 nurses have died and about 9 on quarantine this tells you who is more exposed to hazards in hospital.

4 they went to be trained abroad to be

they don't want other health Proff to be directors

PerfectFortune: I have said it before in my other post, the Drs are cheats.

We have seen several posts here from supposed Drs who are happy and confortable being on strike and the reasons are not far fetched.

1. They are getting paid (with tax payers money) for staying at home.
2. They cut jobs at one private hospital or the other.
3. 70percent of them are incompetent and unprofessional.

Though am not a fan of GEJ but am with him on this one (though am sure it will be reversed).

If the Drs must go on strike at any time for whatever reason, the helpless patients (masses) should be the only one at the receiving end, they (Drs) should sacrifice something as well which include forfeiting their salaries for as long as they stay off work.

"No pain, No gain" they say.
