omenka: The western societies find themselves in the enviable positions they occupy in the commity of nations not because their citizens sing praises of their governments for doing what is required of them to do by law. They are where they are because they constantly criticize, albiet constructively, the deeds and misdeeds of their governments. Their insatiable craving and relentless demend for pace settin performance from their leaders kept their leaders on the grindstone 247 producing unbelievably remarkable results.
It is quite disheartenin to hear jingles of praises for our government when they manage to build some housing estate, or construct some road.. It is such crass bootlickin and mediocrity that has brought this country to her knees cos once the leaders are comended, especially openly, all they assume is that they've finished the job and its now time to rest and enjoy!
Im not one of such who go dancing on their tail like circus chimps just cos the government has done what WE empowered them to do.
I see no good in them 'exposing' the thieves if they can't go the full hog of prosecutin and incarcerating them...
I'd always be critical until we get to that spot when we can take some deep breath of fresh air and exclaim 'Alas, We Have Arrived!'
Great comment; one of d best so far. Thank you. I share most of yr thoughts esp dis: '..becos they constantly criticize, ALBEIT CONSTRUCTIVELY..'.... I wish dat is what we are dealing with here

peaceland: hello all,
I rarely get drawn to issues like this.
initially I've been enjoying the comments made by people but its no longer funny
are we blind or are we so callous that we cannot tell ourselves the truth even if the western world missed it?
whats wrong with we the so called youths that we are no longer mindful of the future?
what achievement have we made in tackling corruption?. forget the stupid statistics of 2.4 and 2.7;
who honestly on ground can point to 1 thing being done to reduce/fight corruption
we claim the fan is working by calculating rpm; i see the air is still still; which is being more realistic?
even if we are being paid to call blue red; are we that conscience scarred that we are celebrating inanity?
i look forward to that day when the real identities of people behind some user names here would be revealed
we are so callous that we can now look corruption in the face and smile; thousands are without job; a lot lost their job in recent times - all due to corruption, most hospitals (including the national hospital) are dead; we have probably the largest government fleet; daily we hear clearly ridiculous news - latest is banquet hall; once in awhile small corrupt - fries get stove warmed and that's all.....
honestly; anyone who says corruption has reduced or the fight against corruption has improved should please in clear terms give good reasons.
most of the countries we "bested" are war ravaged or just recovering from war/unrest and we are celebrating!??.
thank you all
SHUT ya mouth there my frnd, and go look for a soft pillow and sleep; u need sleep. On what basics were u guys mastur.bating every where and shouting at d top of yr voices that dis admin is d most corrupt in d history of nigeria? Silly claims by elRufai, ACN, eediots here on NL, SR or what? Or is it dat concortd '#5trn' figure from a bought Punch (do you know how they 'generatd' that figure)?... And who is jubilating ova dis? We are not; at 2.7 much more still need doing . We are only pissing on u guys as shameless LIARS who took advantage of a govt that wantd to be more transparent and expose its own books and practices to the open for the 1st time, to concort stu.pid stories about hw d same govt is the most corrupt govt in d history of d nation- that was the claim u guys hv bn making basd on hearsays, half-truths and outright lies. Today, we hv a score from T.I in d midst of most deadly propaganda war in d country indicating not only that we are improving, albeit slightly, but at 2.7, arguably one of d nation's highest score since T.I startd scoring us ( certainly higher than when GEJ took ova).... We are not rejoicing; we are only noting d slight improvement and of course pissing on u guys. Ya get? Now go to sleep

Sincere 9gerian: Thank you my brother/sis. Nobody is celebrating that Nig has arrived. But what some of us are saying is that there are some POSITIVE changes. We acknowledge these changes and at the same time urge the govt to do more. What I find unacceptable is the claim that things are getting worse. For instance, where I reside, power supply is better today than it was last yr; our airports are being renovated; cost of governance is coming down; our elections are better organised; the trains are moving again in several cities; foreign reserve is increasing; excess crude account is increasing; naira is stable; our roads are currently recieving attention; etc. Add to all of these is the refreshing news of Transparency International latest(2012) report which showed that Nigeria improved marginally this year, with a score of 2.7 as against 2.4 of 2011 and climbed UP the ladder by 4 places. This TI rating is important because the sort of propaganda by Punch, SR, El Rufai, Pastor Bakare, Premium times and co in the last few months mislead some shallow minded persons to think corruption in Nig is worsening. Yes we still have challenges, especially the CONTRIVED boko haram problem. Hopefully, the govt will find a way of bringing the boko haram onslaught to an end.
@sincere9jerian, i sincerely thank u for this comment....its only a mata of time, PROPAGANDA almost always fails eventuali..

ypzilanti: Government tells the people to tighten their belts but the people see the government living large...how do you expect them to accept the increase in fuel price? As suspected by the people, nothing significant has been achieved with the over 30% increase compromise that ended the strike.

The roads from PH-Enugu is a mess. Lagos-Ibadan is a mess. East-West road is virtually abandoned. Akwa-Ibom-Calabar is dilapidated. Benin-Ore is forever being reconstructed, but never ever completed. The populace plys the road and curses the government. They use APAPA OSHODI road and curse the government. Even the road from Murtala Mohammed airport into Lagos is a joke. Car park at the airport is being constructed for over 4 years now...it has been abandoned. I could go on forever.

The President just signs contracts. He does not follow up or monitor anything. He does not sack under performing ministers. Instead the only performing minister in his cabinet was removed. When asked to declare his assets publicly to gain some moral ground, he said he does not give a damn. Everyday Nigerians are reading of trillions of Naira stolen, but no one is going to jail for the crimes.

The governors you mention are all popular in the states the govern and on social media. The peoples grouse is with the President. He has disappointed those who believed he would make a difference. They are all crossing over to the other side, one by one, and in 2015 they will deliver their verdict on his performance.
The PH-Enugu expressway is now been rehabilitated extensively by 4 diff contractors at diff sections of dat terrible courtesy SURE-P (wonda when last u usd d road); the East-West Road has not been 'virtuali abandond' (what d hell are u talking about)- dat is a massive road spanning d coastal section of about 5 states dat successive govts hv be mouthing about since d '60s and its constructn is currently going on apace with various constructd bridges already tking shape by 3 or so diff contractors (yes, they need to speed it up but constructn is rili going on there presently); Benin-Ore reconstructn is almost complete afta sm many yrs of diff govts faild promises (abeg, when last did u use d road), only its part expansion into a national dual carrier way is just beginning; the Akwa ibom-Calabar road is dilapidatd (you got dat one right); and u know wats up about recent developments on Lagos-Ibadan expressway; whilst Apapa-Oshodi is bn reconstructd by JB and one oda company, with sm sections already recoverd..... I just want to mk these clarificatns

Jarus: Compared to the cons, it is still a good thing that opposition controls the media.

The government has NTA which is still the most watched station, especially by the middle to lower class who reside in places other than big cities of Lagos, PH, Abuja, Kano etc. These PDP states, which are in teh majority also have local stations for their use. These governments hire all manners of Media advisers, PR guys etc from the formal to the informal media. Reno is there tackling el-Rufai on twitter, Abati and Okupe doing the formal media thing, Beaf and co, even if not sponsored, are giving the Gbawes of this world run for their money on Nairaland here.

So, if the opposition guys are having upper hand and able to tilt public sentiments in their favour, I don't think anyone is to blame. That is the way I see it.

That said, I think Amaeachi and Sule Lamido have their own due of good press. I don't agree they are under-reported.

Akpabio is the only PDP performer I think is not getting the deserved publicity and I will blame his media/PR guys for that.
@Jarus, so dat u know. Sm of us are beginning to think that even our belovd NL have been 'bought' over recently. 4evergod2: They say some are born deep thinkers while others have deep thinking thrust upon them. Obviously you and sincere 9gerian are not in any of those categories. Any right thinking Nigerian knows that the core issue with Nigeria is corruption. Falling standard of education can be traced to corruption, crime is traceable to corruption, quota system is simply corruption, Per infrastructure Obviously you dont know about the second port harcourt refinery which was built in the days of buhari and was refining 150,000 barrells of crude daily.

The government through the NNPC then under Buhari's leadership, expanded domestic refining capacity by contracting the building refineries in Kaduna (completed in 1980) and Warri (1978), and subsequently the expansion of Port Harcourt (1989) to a total national refining capacity of 445,000.

The NNPC under Buhari built the Warri and Kaduna refineries,20 depots and laid over 3000kms of pipelines, well over $1b was spent on TAM under Obj alone without any of them functioning.

Which Federal road was dilapidated in the days of Buhari? Name just one.
Let me cut the chase and go straight to my questn : Kaduna Refinery was built in 1980; Warri Refinery in 1978; Port Harcourt 1 in 1965 and Port Harcourt 2 in 1989; Buhari ruled 1983-1985.... take dat: @Taharqa, I quite appreciate your opinion but the fact still remains that the government is a spendthrift by planning to build a hall for 2.2billion which isn't reflected in the budget for year 2012 and 2013. The 6.2billion for the PIB awareness campaign is another example of the government profligacy.
30.2million budgeted for animals and animal supplement and so many other examples that I can't begin to mention. My tough and livid stands is borne out of what I'll describe as government's inconsistency to cut cost of governance and the frugal wastages it has embarked upon. The share of recurrent spending in relation to aggregate expenditure being reduced from 71% in 2012 to 68.7% in 2013 is still high and the pace of reduction slow.
My greatest wish still remains for GEJ to prove the cynics wrong but for now we have to take a deep scrutiny into all government action
I completely agree with everything u just said, and share the same sentiments except the money for the 'publicity' of d PIB bill for now until certain things are clarified (plz check dat thread i hv responded to one of yr comments).... Okay read dis article. It is still same of same- there was no where the minister was quoted as saying that, nor was there any explanation as to what 'publicity' or 'awareness' means as well as details of d expenditure unda d heading. The article for instance says that #17.3million was appropiately dis yr for 'awareness' (even if also admitting that it cud not provide implementatn details), yet #6.02billion is said to be usd for same 'awareness' for the bill! This doesnt make any sense. How can u use #17m to 'publicize' a bill in d main yr of lobbying for passage of a bill while still proposing to use over #6billion for the nx 3yrs to furda 'publicize' a bill that wud already hv bn passd by then. What wud u be 'publicizing' again about an already passd law? The story does not mk any sense, except if most of d #6.02 is actuali meant for the IMPLEMENTATION of d considerable changes that wud hv to be made in d entire oil and gas industry if d PIB bill is finally passd. To be sure of this, we wud hv to read a direct quote of d minister saying that they plan to use #6.2billion for the 'publicity' of d PIB bill AND we wud also hv to hv d expenditure Details of this 'publicity' budget heading in order to undastad what it is..... These are the FACTS: this govt has stopped and then is reversing every indicator of cost of governance and wasteful spendings that have been increasing at least since 1999; i mean, every one of those main indicators- It has almost halved OVERHEAD cost from about #526billion which it met in 2010 to about #230billion two yrs later; it has reducd d Recurrent budget from an incredible 77.1% in 2010 to an honestly still high 68.7% proposd nx yr; it has reducd Deficit as a % of GDP from 3.3% in 2010 to 2.7% dis yr and proposd 2.17% (way below d legal binding 3% which oda govts exceeded many times) nx yr- and these indicators wud continue to decrease each yr cos of many reforms midwifed by NOI and the implementatn of Oronsaye's report ...
